We Protect Our Own -Chapter 52

~A Teen Wolf fan-fiction collaboration between Miss E Charlotte and Sage Londyn~

After class Stiles led Scott, Teagan, Allison and Avery to Coach Finstock's office because he knew it would be empty.

As soon as they all were in the room, Teagan shut the door and Scott said "Derek's outside waiting for Lydia."

"I know, I saw him." Avery admitted nodding.

"Waiting to kill her?" Allison questioned.

"If he thinks she's the Kanima… yeah." Avery said nodding remembering that Derek had made it clear once he knew who the Kanima was he'd kill them.

"It's not her." Teagan said confidently.

"She didn't pass the test. She ate the venom and nothing happened." Scott argued with her.

"And Peter's bite didn't affect her either." Teagan reminded everyone.

"Good point." Scott agreed.

"Well, none of it matters because Derek thinks it's her." Avery said, her eyes dark as she spoke.

"So we either have to convince him he's wrong, or we've got to figure out a way to protect her." Allison said, worried about her friend.

"I really don't think he's gonna do anything here… not at school." Scott said as he watched a few students walk by the office and look at them through the windows.

"We need to come up with a plan." Stiles thought out loud.

"I can try to distract Isaac, and chances are Erica will be with him so that will take care of her too." Teagan offered a small part of the plan.

"We can try to get Lydia out of here before they can get to her. Take her somewhere safe." Stiles added.

"I'll help." Allison said nodding.

Scott glanced at Avery who nodded knowing what he was thinking.

"What?" Stiles asked looking between them.

"Avery and I can try to talk to Derek." Scott said.

Teagan glanced down at the floor, not really liking the idea of Avery having to talk to Derek. She knew it still hurt her to see him.

"That's not a good idea." Stiles cut in.

"It's the best one we've got. We might be able to convince him to at least give us a chance to prove it's not her." Avery argued with him.

Stiles looked at Teagan who was looking back at him; he remembered what she'd told him about not trying to stop Avery from doing things.

"Alright." He agreed with a defeated sigh.

"But if anything happens, you guys let me handle it… okay?" Scott asked surveying the room.

"What does that even mean?" Allison asked him.

"It means none of you can heal like I do." Scott reminded them, his eyes focused on Allison as he spoke.

Scott heard everyone sigh at his words.

"I don't want anyone to get hurt." He replied surveying the room.

Pulling a crossbow from her bag Allison said, "I can protect myself."

"And she's not the only one. We're not helpless, Scott." Avery added in.

"Yeah." Teagan backed her friend.

"You guys don't have a gun… or even a crossbow." Stiles said, looking at them.

"Lydia is one of our best friends and in case you've all failed to notice, we will do what it takes to protect our own." Avery said, her light brown eyes intense as she surveyed the room of her friends.

"Just because we're girls, don't treat us like we're helpless. We're a part of this group." Teagan said as she looked around the room.

Scott gave them a half-smile as he said, "It's not because you're girls, all I'm saying is that if any of us ends up getting injured, I'd rather it be me. I can heal so much faster."

"Let's just do this." Allison said as she tucked the crossbow back in her bag and nodded to Stiles.

He stared at Avery for a few moments, before he left the room with Allison to find Lydia.

Teagan looked at Avery and Scott, "Okay then… I'm off to find Isaac."

"Meet me in the parking lot after, and we'll meet up with Stiles and Allison." Avery called after her.

As soon as the final bell rang, Teagan rushed past all the students heading for the parking lot as she looked for Isaac and Erica.

She knew they were searching for Lydia, but she hoped she could find them before they found her friend. She turned a corner and looked down the empty hallway, breathing a sigh of relief when she saw Isaac and Erica walking down the hallway. She ran down the hall behind them, calling out Isaac's name.

Isaac came to a stop, ignoring the dirty look Erica was sending him since he stopped walking, then turned to watch his girlfriend run toward him. He knew he had a mission to do for Derek, but he couldn't just ignore her.

"Hey... I- We uh, can I talk to you?" Teagan stuttered out, as she stood in front of him. She honestly had no idea how she was going to stall him, but figured he wouldn't turn her down for a talk.

"We're a little busy right now so run along." Erica said before he could answer.

"Isaac, please." Teagan begged him, then added,"I know what you two did in Chemistry class. Since you know Jackson is not the Kanima, you were testing Lydia."

"You told her?" Erica snapped, as she shot Isaac a look.

As Isaac stuttered to come up with an answer, she added,"Derek is not going to like this."

"Shut up!" Isaac hissed at Erica. He reached out to lightly grab Teagan's hand and pull her off to the side so they could talk privately.

"Look, I know Lydia is your friend but she was bit by an alpha and she failed the test." Isaac said to her quietly.

"It doesn't prove anything." Teagan argued back.

"It proves that she's a lizard killing bitch that needs to be put down." Erica called out, butting into their conversation.

"Shut up!" Teagan and Isaac snapped, as they both turned to look at her.

Erica held her hands up in surrender then folded her arms across her chest.

Teagan looked back at Isaac as she said,"ok, let's say Derek is right and Lydia is the Kanima, does that mean she has to die? Isn't there something else we can do?"

When Isaac didn't say anything, she reached out and grabbed one of his hands, intertwining their fingers, then added softly,"we're in this together remember? I told you I am always on your side and I meant that, so I want to help with this, but there has to be a better way."

As Isaac looked down at their joined hands, she took a step closer to him and rested a hand on the back of his neck, twirling her finger around his hair. She waited until he looked up at her then she leaned forward to softly kiss his lips.

After the kiss, she rested her forehead against his as she whispered,"We can do this together Isaac. You don't have to be Derek's little pet and do his dirty work. I'm right here, I'm not running."

"Ugh, seriously?" Erica groaned out loud, then she looked at Isaac as she added,"Please don't tell me you are falling for this crap. You do realize what she's doing right? She's only distracting you and me from doing our job."

"I meant everything I said, Isaac. We can do this together." Teagan said, as she looked at Isaac.

Isaac finally shook his head and said,"No. I don't want you involved in any of this, we'll take care of it."

"Even though I meant everything I said, Erica was right." Teagan admitted,"I'm sorry, I am trying to distract you two, but this is Lydia. Isaac you can't kill her."

"And why not? Cause she's your friend?" Erica snapped, as she took a step toward Teagan and Isaac then added,"just cause things were perfect for you in popularity-land doesn't mean the rest of us had it easy. Lydia was a bitch to us all and I guarantee she won't be missed."

"I'm not letting you do this." Teagan said, hoping she sounded braver than she felt as she looked at Erica. Then she looked over at Isaac and shot him a pleading look, hoping he would side with her. But was surprised when he looked up at her with his eyes glowing, he was siding with Erica, with his pack and that hurt her, a lot.

"Fine! You two want to kill her, go ahead." Teagan snapped angrily, as she looked back and forth at the two before her. A smug smile come across he face as she added,"but it's going to be hard to do that when you can't find her."

Erica flashed her canines at Teagan and took a step toward her, hoping to intimidate her. But when that didn't work, she growled at her and shoved her against a bank of lockers and got into her face.

"Where she is? Where is Lydia?" Erica snarled.

"Erica! Stop!" Isaac growled, as he rushed to Teagan's side. He might agree with his pack that Lydia needed to die, but he wasn't about to let his pack mate hurt his girlfriend.

Isaac reached out to grab Erica's shoulder and pulled her away from Teagan, stepping in front of Teagan to keep Erica from going toward her again. He kept his back toward Teagan as he growled at Erica,"back off!"

While Isaac had his back toward her, keeping Erica away, Teagan took that opportunity to make a quick get-away as she ran down the hallway and made her way toward the parking lot to meet up with Avery.

Isaac turned his head to watch her run away, he was itching to run after her, he knew from hearing her heart racing that she was scared, upset and worried. He hated knowing that he was half the cause of that. He never wanted to upset her or anything, but he had to do this.

In the end he was doing this to protect her.

"Come on, we got to go." Erica barked, as she grabbed his arm and pulled him down the hallway as they continued to search for Lydia, figuring the others couldn't have gotten far with the red-head.

"You ready?" Scott asked Avery once they were left alone in the office.

"Let's just get this over with. But you know, chances are he won't listen." She said as they left the office.

"I know, but we have to try. And if nothing else, we'll cause a small distraction… buy Allison and Stiles more time." He explained as they walked out onto the lacrosse field to find Derek.

Avery watched the ground making sure to not trip in her heels, when she looked back up she saw Boyd.

"I want to talk to Derek." Scott yelled out to him.

"Talk to me." Boyd yelled back.

"Are you deaf? He said we want to talk to Derek, not a guard dog in training." Avery said with arched eyebrows.

Scott glanced over at her and then back to Boyd as he said "I don't want to fight."

"Good, cause I'm twice the size of you." He shot back as he walked closer to the pair.

"True… but I think I'm twice as fast." Scott said, as he quickly tackled him to the ground, catching him off guard.

Avery looked up from the two guys on the ground to see Derek approaching them, his eyes locked with her for a few moments before she swallowed hard and looked back to Scott who was now standing beside her.

"She failed the test." Derek stated.

"Yeah, which doesn't prove anything." Scott said.

Derek scoffed.

"Lydia's different." Avery snapped.

Looking back to her Derek said, "I know, at night she turns into a homicidal walking snake."

"I'm not going to let you kill her." Scott said.

Derek smirked and he and Boyd exchanged amused looks. "Who said I was going to do it?"

To buy more time, Scott and Avery played along and acted surprised like they didn't know Isaac and Erica were in the school trying to find Lydia right then.

Scott turned like he was going to go into the school, but Boyd body slammed him knocking him to the ground.

Avery took a few steps away from where Scott was now on the ground and Boyd took a step towards her, but Derek quickly grabbed his arm.

"I swear Boyd, you touch me and I'll wolfs bane your ass. One of my best friends family are hunters, I can find some." She threatened her eyes narrowed as she spoke.

Scott was already up from the ground and looking at her.

Boyd acted like he was going to take another step, but Derek tightened his grip on his arm and looked at him with his red eyes showing, and Boyd immediately backed down.

When Derek let go of him, Boyd charged Scott again. This time Avery could hear bones in his chest break, as he fell to the ground.

"I don't know why you think you have to protect everyone now, Scott. But even so, Lydia has killed people and she's going to do it again." Derek reasoned.

"Justify it however you want, but it's still murdering a 16-year-old girl. She isn't the Kanima." Avery defended.

"When she kills again, and it's only a matter of time; it could be any one of us." Derek argued with her.

"What if you're wrong?" Scott questioned, his voice strained from pain as he lay on the ground still.

"She was bitten by an alpha, it's her." Derek argued as he surveyed the otherwise empty lacrosse field.

"You saw that thing up close; you know it's not like us." Scott said rising up on his elbows.

"But it is. We're all shape shifters. It happens rarely, and it happens for a reason." Derek said.

"What reason?" Scott demanded to know.

"Sometimes the shape you take reflects the person that you are. Avery, even you've called Lydia cold-blooded." Derek reminded her.

"Because I'm a teenage girl and I bitch about my friends when they piss me off. But you don't know Lydia like I do." She said.

Derek shook his head back and forth, showing that he didn't buy her words.

"Remember that day at the pool? Derek, I was literally inches away from that thing… face to face and I looked in its eyes. I don't know who it is, but it's not Lydia." She pleaded for his understanding.

Stepping forward Derek extended a hand to Scott and pulled him to his feet.

"She could be immune." Scott offered another theory.

"No one's immune, I've never seen or even heard of it." Derek argued back with him.

"Jackson… you bit him and nothing happened. Lydia could have passed her immunity onto him." Avery argued, Lydia and Jackson had dated for quite a while before Teagan came back to town.

"What?" Scott asked, shocked. He didn't know that Jackson had been bitten.

"Yeah, didn't you know? Derek bit him… but nothing happened so he thought Jackson was the Kanima." Avery explained what Teagan had told her.

Derek stared at Avery, wondering how she knew so much about it.

"Peter said the bite either kills you or turns you, that's why when he wanted to bite me you wouldn't let him, because you were afraid it might kill me. And don't think for a second I don't know what you were trying to accomplish with Jackson." Avery said through gritted teeth.

"And what exactly was I trying to accomplish?" Derek shot back at her.

"You were hoping he'd die from the bite." Avery said, her voice quieter and laced with sadness as she took a step back away from him.

"You did… didn't you?" Scott asked him angrily.

"Scott…" Derek tried to say but he cut him off.

"You hoped he'd die, but it didn't happen. Nothing happened and you have no idea why, do you?" Scott asked, taking a few steps closer.

"No." Derek answered, anger apparent in his voice as he glanced back to where Avery was shaking her head back and forth with disappointment in him.

"Avery's right, it's a credible theory. Lydia is somehow immune and she passed it onto Jackson. You know we're right." Scott said confidently.

"No!" Derek yelled.

"You cannot do this!" Scott yelled back at him.

"Look I can't let her live! You both should have known that." Derek shouted at them.

Walking up next to Scott, Avery said, "I was really hoping we'd be able to convince you to just give us a chance to prove it's not her…"

Derek's eyes searched her face as she spoke.

"But…" She continued, letting her voice trail off.

"But what?" Derek asked confused.

"We weren't really counting on it." Scott finished with a smirk.

Derek looked between them, as he realized it was all a set up and they'd been there to distract him and Boyd.

Avery's eyes locked with Derek's again before he and Boyd turned and left.
