Part 1 prompt:Can you write one where Fang and Lightning get into a fight and make up? Or one where they had broken up a few years prior and saw each other again, caught up, and tried the whole dating scene again?
Rain pelted her face as she waved for the fourth taxi. It steadfastly ignored her, throwing up a spray of dirty water as it roared past. Biting back a growl and cursing the unexpected weather, Lightning tugged the collar of her hood-less wool jacket around her face and waited for the next one.
"Light? Is that you?"
Just as the weather had taken her by surprise, so did the voice that called to her. It had been years, but her heartbeat wouldn't allow her to pretend not to recognize it. She couldn't even feel the rain anymore. But when she turned she realized it was only because there was now an umbrella over her head.
"Fang?"
Her ex stood close under the same umbrella, all five-foot, nine-breathtaking-inches of her. "Hey," the woman chuckled, "so it is."
Maybe she was caught too much in her smile, or the way her green eyes teased in that way of hers. The way they always used to, just for her. Whatever it was, Lightning was pretty sure she just stood there staring for a solid three seconds. "It's good to see you," she finally heard herself say.
Fang tilted her head. "Yeah? Looks like you got caught in a bad spot." She looked up then and waved. A taxi promptly pulled to the curb.
Lightning shook her head. "Why are you always so lucky with that?"
Fang looked like she was trying to hold back a smile. She was failing terribly. "I suppose it can't be 'cause I'm better looking, eh?"
Lightning scoffed and lightly whacked her on the arm with the back of her hand, prompting a much wider grin.
"Here, let me get that for you." Fang stepped toward the taxi door, leaning out from the shelter of the umbrella so it stayed over Lightning's head. She opened the door and rested a hand on top of it. Lightning noticed the fingers were fidgeting. "Are you headed home?"
"Yeah, I…" Lightning moved automatically toward the cab. At the same time, something held her back. "Actually, are you busy? Maybe we could get some coffee. Just to catch up," she added hurriedly.
It was Fang's turn to stare. Long enough for the taxi driver to peer back at them. She looked hard at Fang. "Really? You're hesitating?" Her eyes flicked to Lightning. Really?
Lightning's eyes caught with Fang's, who released a small laugh. "Yeah. Alright."
Part 2 prompt: Could we have a continuation of the Flight-Breakup-Random meeting fic, when they decide to catch up for coffee?
Fang reached for the door, holding it for Lightning to pass through first. She'd forgotten how much she enjoyed the small things Fang used to do. She never asked it of her, but she still found it endearing coming from someone like Fang… cute, even. She stepped aside to let Fang come in and shake out the umbrella.
She looked incredible. The long, stylish black rain jacket accentuated her height and the breadth of her shoulders while the belt cinched around her waist showed off her wonderfully curved figure. Her hair was as wild and unruly as ever, and the attractive features of her face seemed always on the verge of a tease.
Ducking her head away, Lightning fixed her eyes on the menu overhead and asked, "Do you still get a mocha?"
"Yep. Grande with an extra-"
"-shot of chocolate. I remember."
Lightning caught Fang smiling at her from the edge of her sight and had trouble settling her heart. She ordered for both of them, and they found a small table along the wall of the cafe. They relieved themselves of their coats – Fang wasn't quick enough to hide the urge to help Lightning out of hers – and took a seat facing each other.
"So how's work been treating you, Light? Are they still making you stay late every night?"
Lightning crossed her legs and hoped their drinks would arrive soon so she'd have something other than the woman across from her to fixate on. Whatever Fang was thinking, whatever she was feeling, she lounged in her chair exuding an aura of confidence that Lightning couldn't help but feel drawn to. Just like when they'd first met. "Not anymore, actually. I'm not as busy as I used to be. I was able to get some better shifts so I have more… more time for myself. And Serah." Very smooth, Light. She could hear it as if Fang said it out loud. "It's been nice, overall."
Fang smiled, and it was just her regular, everyday, irritating smile but yes it was still enough to take Lightning's breath away. "I'm glad. You don't seem as stressed as you used to. I was certain you'd be showing gray hairs in that pink head of yours by now."
Lightning nodded with a small laugh, automatically running a hand through her hair. Their drinks came and she eagerly wrapped her fingers around the paper cup.
"How about you? Did you find a new firm to work for?"
Fang shrugged, seemingly uninterested in the topic. "I did. Pays well, people are nice."
"That's good."
"Yup."
They shuffled around with their drinks and chairs for a time. Lightning looked up when Fang leaned forward.
"So. Been seeing anyone lately?" Fang wagged her eyebrows, perhaps to ease the tension behind the question.
Lightning shook her head. "No, I haven't seen anyone since… since us. I guess I've been…"
"Ah," Fang grinned at her pause and pointed with a finger wrapped around her drink, "you can't say you're busy now, can you?"
Lightning dropped her eyes and tugged discretely at her collar. "I just haven't found anyone."
Fang nodded. "Fair enough."
"You?"
She shrugged, glancing away. "I've had a few dates off and on. No one really clicked. Or ones I thought might still ended pretty soon." She raised her drink to her lips while looking at Lightning over the rim and lifted her brow in mock surprise. "Apparently I'm scary when I'm angry."
"Oh?" Lightning smiled at that, propping her chin against the palm of her hand as she watched Fang sip her coffee. "I never noticed."
Fang chuckled and set her cup down. "Yeah, but you know what I'm talking about. You're the only person I know who can stay toe-to-toe with me when I'm throwing a fit." Smiling, Fang leaned forward, elbows on the table, arms around her drink. "Remember that time I was about ready to break some dishes and you came right up to my face?" She held her hand up to her face for emphasis.
Lightning nodded. She couldn't remember what Fang had been so upset about or what they'd said to each other, but she could remember the heat of the moment and Fang's eyes like green fire staring back at her.
Those eyes were watching her now, but the fire in them was much more gentle now and… held something else she couldn't place.
Fang inhaled and dropped her eyes to the table. Lightning noticed Fang was starting to scratch her palms in a nervous manner. "You were never afraid of me. I think I took that for granted at times."
"I knew you would never try to hurt me."
Fang glanced briefly at her, her eyes saying how much she appreciated her trust. " I don't get angry so much anymore. I… found someone to talk to. Was able to work out a few things. I didn't realize I had so much bottled up-"
Lightning reached over and covered Fang's hands. They stilled under her touch. "I'm glad," she said as their eyes met.
A smile crooked on Fang's lips. "Thanks, Light." She drew Lightning's hand between her own and ran her thumbs over it. Lightning wasn't sure if Fang was totally aware of what she was doing – she appeared lost in her thoughts – but she didn't want to pull her hand away. "I guess it wasn't all bad." She chuckled, lightly grazing her fingers over the back of Lightning's hand. "Some of the fights ended rather pleasantly."
The temperature in the room swept up from warm to searing, and Lightning had no doubt a very visible blush appeared on her face. Her mind had blanked momentarily and all she could think of were Fang's hands clutching at her, the fire in her eyes, and her lips scorching a trail over her skin.
When her hand stilled, Fang looked quickly at her, let go, and sat back. "Sorry."
Lightning leaned closer, already missing the touch. "Fang, it's okay. Really." Itwas okay. She wanted some way to tell her that, to make her understand.
Fang watched her intently for a moment. Her features relaxed, and she reached into her pocket to take out a phone. "Hey, is your phone number still the same? I don't think I ever got rid of it."
Lightning took out her own phone. "Yeah. And yours?"
"Haven't changed it. Do you need me to tell you what it is again?"
Lightning scrolled through her contacts, but she didn't need to find it to say, "No. I still have it."
Fang smiled at her. "Maybe we should hang out again sometime."
Lightning nodded. "I think that'd be nice."
"I'll have to check my schedule," Fang cleared her throat, "but I can give you a call. How's that sound?"
"That works for me. I'm not sure yet what I've got going on next week, anyway." Lightning couldn't help but feel like they were setting up a business meeting.
They finished their drinks and headed outside. It was still raining so Fang offered to stand with her until she got a cab.
"Thanks for the coffee, Light."
"Of course." They were both underneath the umbrella, facing each other. Lightning could almost see Fang's hands fidgeting in her pockets.
"I'll try to figure out a time soon. I forgot how much I enjoyed spending time with you." They were standing so close their coats almost brushed. Fang, who up until then had been fixated on her feet, looked up quickly. "I mean I never forgot about you. That's not what I meant at all." Lightning was watching her with no small amount of amusement. "I think about you quite a lot actually, even when I was out with someone else I couldn't get you out of my head, but that's… that's not coming out right at all, is it? What I'm trying to say is I still really like you and I-"
Lightning reached up and cupped her hands over Fang's jaw. "Just kiss me, Fang."
The breath she must've been holding swept out of her. Fang's eyes dipped from hers, and with a single step forward she covered Lightning's mouth with her own.
Lightning leaned into it, into the heat and everything it awakened. She hadn't realized just how much she'd longed for Fang to kiss her like she couldn't breathe without her. And she needed it just as much.
Fang chucked the umbrella aside and slanted her head as she hauled Lightning against her, both arms holding her tight. Rain sprinkled over them and people passed them by, but in that moment it was only the two of them and a rediscovered love that had never truly been lost.
Fang was smiling when she finally parted from the kiss, and she dropped her forehead against Lightning's. "We should go on a date sometime."
The sparkle in Fang's eyes made Lightning smile as well. "I'd like that."
