Chapter 54: Never-ending Sleep

L sat in the waiting room biting his lip as hard as he could as he stared at the ground in front of him, his toes curled over each other as he sat in the chair trying to be patient.

"Is she ok?" L heard the voices from the task force not far off and heard the footsteps. He didn't look up as the footsteps stopped in front of him allowing him to see two brown shoes...he knew whose shoes those were and right now he couldn't care less.

"L….what happened?" L quietly shifted his head to look up, to see Light Yagami staring down on him. L's eyes narrowed at him wondering suddenly if it were possible if Kira could be the one doing this to Hail. "No she would have died from a heart attack by now."

"She left last night to do something….shopping probably. I fell asleep waiting and when I woke up I found her on the balcony sleeping against the bars." L told him quietly leaving out 'where' exactly he'd been sleeping, Light didn't need to know that.

Light pondered over his words as he sat next to him, he clasped his hands together between his legs.

"Have the doctors-"
"No." L answered knowing exactly what he was going to say and personally he didn't feel like talking...at all.

Light peered at him and then turned away closing his eyes waiting as well. The task force entered not much longer after that as they claimed their own seats around the room

Just as the awkward silence filled the room the door to the emergency room opened. L and Light were the first to jump from their seats.

"How is she?" Light breathed out quickly as the Task force came up each with a worried face, even Aizawa who had always slightly suspected Hail, looked worried.

"Well to put it simply, she has a weak heart. Something tells me that she experienced something that did not bode well with her system, she went into shock." Everyone tensed waiting for either good news or bad news. "But we were able to stabilize her…" The nurse trailed glancing at the ground as everyone let out a sigh but L caught her look.

"What else is there?" He asked staring her down as she peered at him, she flinched at his piercing gaze.

"Well…..we were able to stabilize her….but…." The nurse took a deep breath. "She hasn't woken up, we even tried putting medicine in her body to wake her up; but nothing is working." L stood there, a feeling of numb filled his aching muscles.

"So she's in a coma?" The chief asked.

"That is what all the doctors have decided...but when we sent her blood tests in and got them checked we found something odd in her body...some sort of disease." L continued to stare at the nurse.

"Disease?" Matsuda asked with a frown.

"Yes...it's a disease we've never seen before...we asked around and no one's ever heard of it. But it resides near the brain. From the look of it we came to believe that this disease might be some sort of mental disorder. But since we've never seen anything like it...we can't be sure." The nurse finished with a dramatic sigh.

L looked away, he'd always noticed that Hail had some issues; the dreams were the biggest clue, she said she'd been on much medication back where she came from. But to hear it from the doctor made him worried.

"What could this disease do to her?" L asked, his fingers clenching and unclenching in his pocket.

"Like I said sir, we've never SEEN it…..but if I had to guess, mental disorders usually come in forms of bipolar or drastic senses of sadness. It could result in everyday life, dreams, anything." L didn't want to believe it, Hail didn't seem the type to be losing her mind but he had to admit….her dreams could have been taking a toll on her.

The task force bustled into Hail's room, the door closing behind them; but Light and L remained there.

"So she might not…...wake up." Light said falling back into his chair with a sigh as he ran his hand through his hair, L's eyes stared blankly at a wall as deep sorrow filled him.

"L….what are you going to do if she doesn't wake up?" L turned to him giving him a glare which Light quickly returned.

"That is a pointless question." L said quietly taking his hands out of his pocket.

"No it's not, I'm sure you cared for her very much….so if she doesn't wake up…" L clenched his fist noticeably which Light caught and shut his mouth.

The silence filled the room and before they both knew it, the Task force had bustled past and sat back in the waiting room. L remained in the hall as Light went in next.

L stood there for a minute trying to control his breathing but ended up growling slightly and smashing his hand into the wall causing a nurse to peak out of one of the rooms not far over but a glare from L sent her running.

"Haha, so she might not wake up, how interesting." Ryuk laughed loudly over Light's shoulder who stood staring at the bed with a blank expression; he looked Ryuk's way without turning and glared in that direction.

"Ryuk." Ryuk stopped laughing and came to stand in front of Light. He cocked his head to the side waiting for whatever Light wanted to say. "Shut up." Light muttered pacing him and placing a hand on Hail's still freezing face, she was hardly even breathing and the heart monitor showed a very, very, very weak heartbeat.
Light bit his lip like he'd seen Hail do so many times, he brought his hand back up to her cheek and stared into her unmoving face. Even though Hail was usually extremely pale this paleness that now formed around her features made her look almost ghostly, even her lips were a pasty white.

"Hail…" Light frowned as he leaned down and pressed a small kiss to Hail's unmoving mouth, he traced his hands through her hair as he hugged her lightly. "Wake up soon."

"Ryuk." Ryuk who had been staring tensed at the forcefulness that was laced in Light's tone. Light brushed some random hair of off Hail's face before turning and staring at the shinigami so coldly that Ryuk was surprised completely. "Tell me, why is Hail like this? I do believe what the nurse said about her mental disorder…..it just fits….but this happened after she practically jumped from my window last night. You told me she couldn't touch the notebook. Why can't she touch it and if she did is this the result of her touching it. And if it is...how do I wake her?" Light gestured towards Hail, his frown tight on his face as his other hand clenched at his side.

Ryuk stared at him. "He's just as upset and uptight as L about this…..hehehe how interesting. I thought Hail was one of the main enemies…"

"Light why would you want to wake her? She knows everything about you, that could become a hinderance in the end. Wouldn't it be best to just end her….she's weak right now. You could kill her now with the Death Note." Light stared at him, his eyes widening in realization, he turned to look at Hail then back at Ryuk.

"Kill Hail?"
