The Battle of Baby-sitting

This chapter has been prompted by Kendall, and their request was Robbie and Jason are left alone to look after baby Oscar. Trouble and chaos quickly ensue

"Someone better shut up Katy, or I swear to god!" Robbie groaned as he made his way down the stairs, pausing at the living room doorway when he saw a young baby who was most definitely not Katy O'Connor sitting on his mum's knee, and who was also currently screaming at the top of his lungs, round face scrunched up and bright red as tears streaked down, despite Sandy's best efforts to sooth him. "Who's baby is that?"

"It's Oscar," Sandy sighed, standing so she could walk around the room with the young babe in her arms, praying that the motions would help calm her grandson, and luckily it was doing just the trick. "It was Darren's weekend to be with him, but there's been an ordering issue at the Dog and he had to go and sort it out. He asked me to look after him tonight cause Nancy's out at a work do and won't be back till late."

"Right," Robbie nodded, throwing the baby a cautious look, as if it would leap from his mum's arms and launch at him, though the only response he got was a gurgle. "Well, can you keep him quiet, some of us are actually trying to work."

"You're doing a school work on a Friday night? Am I hallucinating?" Sandy asked teasingly, though she couldn't quite hide her genuine confusion.

"Well it didn't help that you've grounded me," Robbie said shortly, folding his arms in annoyance at the reminder that whilst his mates were out having fun, he was being punished like he was just ten years old. "I mean, who even does that anymore? I'm two months away from being a legal adult, no parent is as cruel as you."

"Well most parents don't have their children locking people into cupboards when they're just two months away from adulthood," Sandy replied with ease, having treaded over the same old ground a million times before. "Seriously Robbie, what were you thinking?"

"I've apologised haven't I?" Robbie said defensively, seriously wishing he hadn't brought the whole sorry thing up again. The last thing he wanted was for his mum to have another go, he'd heard it one too many times in the last couple of days, and was in no mood to listen to the same thing again.

Sandy looked on the verge of keeping the matter going, but before she could say anything her mobile began ringing, the hospital's number flashing up on the screen.

"Take Oscar for me," she asked Robbie, not waiting for an answer before she passed the baby over and answering the call as she did so. "Sandy Roscoe... oh of course... no that's not a problem... I'll be down in twenty minutes?... Okay, see you then."

"Please tell me that wasn't what I think it was," Robbie said, practically begging as Sandy got to her feet, though not to take Oscar away from him, but to instead grab her coat and shoes.
"I'm sorry love, but I've got to get to work, one of my clients really needs me. You can cope with Oscar can't you?"

"No!" Robbie protested loudly, staring at the young baby that was still sat contently on his knee with a look of pure horror. "Mum I don't do babies! I can't look after him, I don't know what to do."

"You'll be fine love, honestly Oscar won't be any trouble for you. He's already been fed and he shouldn't need a nappy change for a while yet," Sandy said, trying to calm her frazzled son, though she couldn't help but smile at the look on Robbie's face.

If you didn't know any better, it looked like he'd been asked to defuse a bomb, not look after his nephew. "Anyway, the girls love a guy with a sensitive side, so I'm really doing you a favour."

"This is anything but a favour!" Robbie yelled, though it was too late, as the front door shut loudly behind Sandy as she began to make her way to work.

Robbie's apparent distress seemed to be enough to alarm Oscar, even without the slamming of the door and his yells, and within seconds of Sandy leaving, the young Osbourne was screaming louder than he had ever done.

Robbie found himself sighing, wondering just how he could shut up the tiny sprog in front of him without causing any more harm to himself. "Great, just great."

The first thing Jason heard when he got home after sneaking out to see Holly was a baby crying. Actually that a lie, he'd heard the baby's screams from the pathway at the edge of the garden, and found himself worrying that someone was actually torturing said baby (most likely Katy, Sinead had left her over for baby-sitting more times than Jason could care to remember).

Which meant that the young teen was shocked into silence as he entered the family home, to see Robbie holding a screaming tot at arms length begging for it to 'just shut the hell up'.

"That's not Katy," was all Jason could find himself dumbly saying, the scene just too ridiculous for him to formulate any thing else.

"Oh thank god, here take Oscar," Robbie said, clearing up the baby's identity as well as moving to pass off his nephew in the same breath, though Jason took a sharpish step back, not wanting anything to do with the baby that was in front of him. "Look, just calm him down yeah? Mum's gone out and I've got to look after him, but he hasn't shut up since she left."

"And what makes you think I'll know what to do?" Jason asked, shooting Robbie a startled look as Oscar hiccuped loudly, the action interrupting his sobs before he went back to it with full force.

"I don't know and I don't really care as long as I get rid of it," Robbie shrugged, who was now feeling quite worried for his young nephew.

Darren had slowly started building up his relationship with the rest of the family, so for Sandy, and then him in turn, to be trusted with looking after his son was a massive step in the right direction, but he imagined that they'd all go back to square one, if Oscar didn't shut up soon, no doubt he'd cause himself some real harm, after all, no-one was meant to cry for this long.

"I'm not holding him Rob," Jason said decisively, not caring for his twin's cry of annoyance, instead taking a seat to try and think of a way to stop the racket that was Oscar Osbourne. "You could try to burp him?"

}}}}}}}}}}

"There has to be something we haven't tried yet," Jason cried twenty minutes later, his ears practically bleeding as Oscar continued with his screaming. "There has to be something that he must want."

"We've burped him, changed the brat's nappy twice, played peek a boo more times than should be possible, tried to get him to sleep and fed him, what the hell is there left for us to do? Could he be teething?" Robbie asked, trying to think of anything and everything that could possibly be responsible for their current situation.

At this point, he no longer cared why Oscar was so upset, as long as he could fix it and make the toddler who was still sat on his knee shut up.

"Take one look at his mouth Rob, he has a full set of teeth, like most babies do at one and a half years old. So no, it's not teething."
"Well I'm bloody sorry Sherlock, at least I'm making suggestions here, what exactly are you doing again?"

"I don't have to be here remember! You're the one who's grounded and who mum told to look after Oscar. I can easily leave this house if I want and let you handle this mess all on your own."

"No, don't do that!" Robbie cried as Jason made his way to the front door, feeling on the verge of a breakdown as it was, if he was left to handle Oscar on his own, there was little doubt that he'd be pushed over the edge, and that really wouldn't be a pretty sight.

Moving Oscar off his knee and onto the sofa cushion next to him, Robbie stood to face Jason, fully prepared to get on his knees to beg his brother to stay. "Don't leave me, I can't be doing this on my own."

"You can't do it with any help either," Jason teased, pausing when he realised that the background noise of Oscar screaming was missing, leaving only silence.

Robbie realised at the same time, and his eyes widened at the lack of sound, inwardly celebrating that it was all over, or at least for now. Turning so he was facing Oscar once more, made Robbie only want to cry more.
"You've got to be kidding me!"

Both twins felt the same disbelief at the sight in front of them, because after spending over twenty minutes trying to calm Oscar down with no success whatsoever, the last thing they expected to do the trick was a crummy little rattle that lay on the side.

"I'm going to kill someone," Robbie declared as he watched Oscar obliviously wave the rattle around the air, cooing and laughing as he did so. "What does he even want to do with that thing, he's bloody deaf!"

Jason couldn't help but laugh at his twin's annoyance, it fully making up for the mood he was put in due to the whole situation. "Come on, we've still got to watch him, though for Christ's sake, do not take that rattle away from him."

"Oh hello love," Sandy said, greeting Jason when she arrived home about forty minutes after Oscar had been calmed down. "You helping Robbie out?"

"Could say that yeah," Jason said, exchanging a lazy smirk with his twin, as the baby that had been causing them so much grief earlier that evening, continued to sleep soundly on.

"So how was Oscar, not too much trouble I hope? You looked like you were going to have a heart attack when I left you Robbie," Sandy asked, laughing as she visualised the pure fear on her son's face once more.

"Nah, it was a breeze weren't it Jase?" Robbie said smoothly, not sure whether he had the right to feel offended at what Sandy had just said.

"Yeah it was fine mum."

"So, I'm assuming you two would be up for baby-sitting Oscar again then?" Sandy asked, already leaving the living room before either of her two sons could protest.
