Chapter 44: I'm All In
Sam sat uncomfortably on the couch in her living room. She had been out of the hospital for four days and had been living down stairs ever since because she didn't yet have the strength to climb up any set of stairs. For four days Sam had either been fast asleep on a pull out bed or squinting at the television whilst she slumped around on the couch. Watching the television appeared to be quite difficult at the moment. Sam's current vision was still a complete blur and it didn't help that she was now wearing an eye patch over her good eye to try and strengthen the problems in the bad one.
"What are you doing?" Mrs Puckett questioned as she witnessed her daughter frantically changing the television channels.
"I'm trying to find the music channel" Sam answered. "I can't see properly to actually watch anything because I have this stupid eye patch on. I thought I'd listen to music but I can't read the channels. I've just been pressing the buttons on the remote and listening out for music" she groaned on, beginning to become impatient.
"How long have you been looking?" Pam asked.
"About an hour" Sam shrugged.
"Pass the remote to me and i'll put it on" Mrs Puckett suggested.
"No" Sam insisted. "I want to find it by myself" she told her mother.
Sam had been like that ever since she had left the hospital. She wanted to do everything for herself. She wanted her complete strength back and was beginning to become extremely frustrated with the fact that her injuries weren't healing as quickly as she wanted them to.
"Okay, well Freddie and Mrs Benson will be here soon" Pam sighed, deciding to change the conversation. "Are you and Freddie joining us for dinner?" she questioned.
"No, Freddie and I are ordering pizza" Sam responded. "We were going to watch a movie but I don't think that's happening" she stressed, continuously pressing the buttons on the TV remote.
Sure, Freddie would be able to watch a movie and she could sit there just feeling hopeless and completely useless.
"Okay, well I'm going to leave you to it" her mother told her.
"Thanks" Sam muttered.
...
"Hey" Freddie greeted Sam a little later on that evening who was now sat in a dark room with the television switched off.
"Hi" Sam grumbled back.
"Are you okay?" he questioned, switching the lights on.
"No" Sam sighed. "It's this stupid eye patch that I've got to wear. I know it's doing me good to where it but what am i actually supposed to do why I can't see a thing? she asked.
"Can you see me?" Freddie asked, sitting down next to her.
"You're still a big blurry blob" Sam shrugged, focusing her eye completely on him. "I want to see you" she demanded, pulling the eye patch off.
"You can't do that" Freddie insisted.
"Of course I can" Sam rolled her eyes. "Why are you in pyjamas?" she suddenly frowned.
"You have pyjamas on" Freddie pointed out.
"Yes but I have a reason to" Sam replied.
"And so do I" Freddie insisted. "We're going on a a date" he smiled.
"But I can barely walk" Sam reminded him.
"That is fine" Freddie assured her, standing up and bringing her Mothers wheeling office chair towards her. "Princess Puckett your carriage awaits" he grinned.
...
"Why do I have to put this stupid eye patch back on?" Sam moaned as Freddie steered her chair.
"I want this to be a surprise" Freddie insisted, stopping himself from walking any further and steadying Sam's chair. "So, do you know where we are?" he asked her.
"Well we haven't gone very far" Sam pointed out. "But all I can tell is that were certainly some where with a lot of light" she added.
"Take your eye patch off and see" Freddie instructed.
As Sam pulled her eye patch back off, her face was struck with thousands of fairy stringed lights glimmering all over her back garden. As her face beamed into a big bright grin, Freddie instantly smiled as to him it was Sam who was lighting up her garden. He carefully took her hands, helping her get to her feet and slowly leading her over to the picnic blanket and cushions that he had layed out on her grass.
"You still brought pizza" Sam pointed out, smiling as she spotted the pizza box laying down on the picnic blanket.
"I don't break a promise" Freddie replied. "Can you sit?" he questioned, whispering slightly and as Sam nodded he very gently helped her get down onto the floor.
As the pair sat closely together, munching on pizza in their pyjamas and enjoying each others company, it didn't take Sam long to realise something. She took another bite of her slice of pizza and turned to look at Freddie with a puzzled look on her face.
"When did you do all this?" she asked, glancing up again at the many lights that were hanging all over her garden. "I've been home all day. I've been home all day for the past four days" she pointed out.
"I've been here pretty much since school finished. Your Mom let me in whilst you were fast asleep on the couch" he explained.
"Well it's pretty amazing" Sam smiled again.
"I'm all in" Freddie then told her, gently taking hold of her hand.
"What do you mean?" she questioned.
"Me and you, you and me. What this is, what were doing, I'm all in" he assured her.
And with that Sam's lips very gently pressed up against his, completely blowing him away.
"I thought your jaw was sore" Freddie whispered.
"Just be gentle" she whispered back.
So he was.
Carefully he cupped both sides of her face with his hands, massaging her jaw line and caressing her face as he kissed her softly in attempt to stop her from hurting so badly. Their lips found a slow and steady rhythm and they both lightly smiled as they enjoyed their moment. This meant a lot to Freddie. This was the closest him and Sam had gotten and that was something that felt pretty great.
