What should he get her?
Roy sauntered down the pavement, hands comfortably in his pockets. He was lost in his thoughts, Edeline somehow managing to consume them yet again.
Honestly, even after a year of being with her, he still couldn't understand how she did it.
And now, once again on his mind, he was plagued with indecision.
What would a girl like Ed want for Valentine's day?
Roy couldn't help wondering if she even wanted anything or, even worse, if she even knew it was today. They had never discussed it and, since it was the first Valentine's they were experiencing as a couple, Roy was at a complete loss as to what to get her.
He wanted it to be thoughtful, not necessarily pricey. If there was something he knew well about Ed was that spending money on her meant nothing. And Roy didn't want to bring her an empty present.
It had to have meaning, something to be remembered.
Easier said than done.
Over the years of being her commanding officer, he had learnt quite a few things about her likes and dislikes, and after they started dating that field expanded much further, mainly to domestic stuff.
Yet now he was realising that he had no clue as to how she dealt with presents. To make matters worse, her birthday was coming up and it was putting a whole lot of pressure on his shoulders.
He had to get two meaningful gifts.
But right now, he decided, he'd focus on Valentine's. Edeline was out with Al, who'd thankfully decided to come from Xing to see her today, and he'd unknowingly saved Roy from a potential angry girlfriend rant. Even though Edeline really didn't seem like the type of girl to do that, he could never be sure. She was full of surprises.
As he continued his walk down the busy streets of Central, he took a look around for any ideas. Everything was filled with romance – you'd think it'd be a piece of cake to get Ed something, yet nothing clicked with him. Everything on display was just stuff – it wouldn't mean a single thing to Edeline.
And some of said stuff was darn expensive as well.
He decided he was buying her something cheap – not because he was a cheap boyfriend, but because he had just recalled her mentioning expensive gifts made her uncomfortable.
He didn't want to make her uncomfortable.
"Oy, young man!"
A woman's voice to his left made him halt. The woman took that as a queue to continue.
"D'ya want some flowers for ya girl?" She smiled wide, her hand holding delicate pink roses.
Roy paused, considering the idea, but almost instantly brushed it off.
Flowers? Pink roses? That was so not Ed. Getting her something like that might even offend her.
"No, thank you," he told the middle aged woman politely, shaking his head, before resuming his walk.
His pocket watch showed twenty to two. Ed said she'd be back for lunch. She was usually late so he deduced he had about half an hour to get her something, or he'd have to either grab something randomly, or not get anything and explain his inner conflict to her.
There was always next year...
But even the thought made him feel like a failure. He was disappointed in himself for even considering not getting her something. Edeline was the first woman he'd ever felt so strongly for. He admired and respected her, and today, as cliché as it was, he wanted to showcase that a bit more than usual.
He racked his brains, trying to remember something, anything she'd told him about what she liked.
He could get her an alchemy book – he'd considered that quite a bit, actually – but then scraped the idea. He got her alchemy books all the time, regardless of the day. He didn't want to look lazy to try something new...
He'd never gotten her flowers though.
He halted, unsure.
Getting her flowers was a risk. He had no clue how she'd react. Maybe if he got her some non-pink ones?
Some red ones! She liked red...Or maybe he could ask that woman at the flower shop if she had any black roses. She'd definitely think those cool.
With a surge of confidence, he hurried back to the flower shop. The woman who'd spoken to him was rearranging some pots.
"Excuse me," he called, making her turn. She gave him a smile of recognition.
"Changed ya mind?"
Roy smile sheepishly. "Kind of." Looking around the little outdoor shop, he said, "Do you have black roses?"
She gave him a weird look. "Black roses? Oh my dear, ya hopeless! Ya girl won't want that!"
Roy grimaced. How did he explain this..? "Trust me, she's...a peculiar type of girl."
She didn't seem to understand, but she let it go and gave him an apologetic look. "Sorry dear, I don't sell anything so dark here."
Deflated, Roy sighed. He should've known. "Oh, I see. Thank you, anyway."
He was just about to turn when his eye caught something. The small bouquet of see-through flowers standing among other, bright ones, triggered a memory.
Skeleton flowers, Edeline had called them. Unique to Resembool. They were her mum's favourite. And they were also extremely rare.
The memory unfolded completely; when they first began seeing each other, secretly back then, Edeline was lying on his chest in the middle of the night, talking about her mum and those flowers, how she used to run all around Resembool to find them for her, while Roy ran his fingers over the soft skin of her naked back.
It was one of their earliest memories as a couple. Honestly, Ed was half asleep; he wouldn't be surprised if she didn't even remember.
But now Roy had found what he was looking for.
"Excuse me," he said to the lady again, who gave him another inquisitive look. He pointed at the almost invisible white flowers. "Are those skeleton flowers?"
The woman's eyes brightened. "Yes, yes they are indeed! Brought straight from Resembool by none other than my husband!" She gave him a cheeky smile. "Now those ya girl will like!"
Roy couldn't contain his smile. "I'll buy them."
The woman hurriedly grabbed the bouquet and brought it over to the cash machine. The flowers really were beautifully delicate. The petals looked like a very thin fabric.
Yes, Edeline would like that.
"Now ya see, these are really rare, so they're a bit pricier than the rest! Took my hubby four days to find enough for a bouquet!"
Roy had expected that, and gave her the money. "That's all right."
She gave him the flowers with a huge smile, and he reciprocated.
He left the shop holding the bouquet and feeling triumphant. The gift was simple, meaningful and frankly just plain beautiful. It ticked off all his boxes.
When he got back home he was quite chuffed with himself, and was anticipating Ed's reaction. He was also curious if she remembered that night, because, to him, it was quite special.
He entered the lounge, listening for any sound. She wasn't back yet. It was five past two.
She would be here any minute, then.
He carefully set the bouquet down on the table, so it'd be the first thing she'd see when she walked in. Then, he moved to the kitchen to set up the table. He'd prepared stew for them today, Ed's favourite. He'd kind of used it as a backup plan if he didn't find anything else to get her. Now it just acted as a bonus.
No sooner had he gotten the utensils out than he heard the front door unlocking. He fought back a grin.
"Roy?" Ed called. He heard her setting her keys down. On the table.
He grinned. "I'm here!"
Silence. Roy was dying to go inside and see her reaction, but he waited.
He heard her coming towards the kitchen. When he sensed her in the doorway, he turned.
She was holding the bouquet, with a very confused look on her face. Her eyes wide and cheeks red from the chill outside.
"What's...?"
Roy should've known she'd have no idea what day it was...
He walked over to her, cupping her cold cheeks with his warm hands. He felt her sigh in contentment.
"It's Valentine's day today." He nodded towards the flowers. "Thought you'd like them."
Ed gazed at the flowers, softly touching the delicate petals.
"They were mum's favourites," she mumbled, looking up at him once more with wide, honest golden eyes. "You can only find these in Resembool, how...?"
He grinned, pecking her forehead. He caught her gaze. "You told me. Remember?"
Ed was lost for a couple of seconds before her eyes widened, and her cheeks flushed. "Y-You remember that time?"
"Of course I do."
She flushed further. "I-I thought you were asleep or something!"
He shook his head, smirking. "I was listening to every word."
Ed groaned, hiding her face in the flowers. It didn't do much, since the flowers were almost see-through. "How fucking embarrassing...What was I even thinking?!"
Deciding to tease her a bit – because why the hell not – he smirked playfully, wrapping his arms around her waist. "Well," he drawled, making her peek up at him warningly. "Amazing sex makes you say things you wouldn't dream of saying."
It was as though she'd known he'd say something like that because she rolled her eyes, though her crimson face gave away her embarrassment. "Or maybe I was half-asleep cause of boredom."
Immediately, she smirked, letting Roy know she didn't mean it. Not one bit, in fact...And he didn't need any more confirmation than what he got that night. Just thinking about it was awakening the feeling he'd had...
Before he could say anything, Ed had pulled away from him. She got out a wide glass and put the flowers in, filling it then with water. "We should get a vase."
As she was fixing up the flowers, Roy came behind her, wrapping his arms around her small waist. "We'll get one. But first..." His lips trailed up her neck, eliciting a deep inhale. "How about we go upstairs?"
Ed looked at him from the corner of her eye, slightly admonishing, though she was suppressing a smile. "I want my stew."
"I'll bring it to you in bed afterwards."
She grinned. "Deal."
