The Army of Narnia
The next few weeks were bright and cheerful. The subjects seemed unaware of the tension surrounding the Just King and the Brave Queen.
It was commonly known that Edmund and Mollie argued, a lot, and it was known that the Queen had disappeared for a few weeks. There was speculation about where she had gone and obviously spiteful rumours broke out. These rumours were stopped quickly by several members of the guard, under Edmund's command. This action did little to prevent more from spreading, fuelled by the fact the Queen hadn't been seen outside the castle.
A completely unaware Mollie made her way up to her bedroom, she was trying to put everything right with Edmund and was therefore now feeling much better within herself. As she mused, and decided to go and see Edmund, she bumped into Peter.
"Sorry!" she said over her shoulder as she ran through the halls. Peter shook his head at her and continued on his way to meet Lucy on the training ground. Mollie opened the door and looked inside she frowned slightly and then shook her head. For the next two hours she roamed the castle looking for Edmund, she ran up all three hundred and twenty eight steps of the Eastern tower, collapsed at the top and refuse to move for ten minutes. As the sky darkened she found herself approaching the library for the third time. She pushed open the wooden door and walked in. She wandered the giant room for a while, her fingers trailing over the books, lost in her own thoughts.
"Mollie?" Edmund asked. Mollie turned and looked at him in surprise. "What on earth are you doing?" he prompted.
"I was looking for you" Mollie said.
"And may I ask why?" he asked.
"We need to talk" she said.
"That sounds ominous" Edmund said, he sat down, his back against one of the bookcases, Mollie sat opposite him.
"Well…. I suppose…." Mollie trailed off thoughtfully.
"Mollie what's wrong?" he asked.
"Did you miss me?" she asked him.
"Why on earth are you asking that?" Edmund asked.
"It's just Annabel said that you couldn't care less when I went" Mollie said "That you didn't even organise a search"
"Mollie, I know you, you couldn't be found if you didn't want to be, not by a search" Edmund said "Peridan stuck lucky"
"I know" Mollie said "But you haven't answered"
"I did miss you. Terribly." Edmund said "But I didn't want to advertise the fact you were missing. You wouldn't have been safe, I know your talent my darling, but even you can't win every fight"
"I missed you. I am terribly foolish, aren't I?" Mollie said
"Not at all" Edmund said.
"It's just I sometimes feel full of fire and I just need to fight" Mollie said.
"You are fire, my dove, and that's why I love you" Edmund said.
"And I love you" Mollie replied. She moved till she was next to him and kissed him. Edmund responded and when they broke apart he smiled.
"I missed that" he murmured.
"Mmm. As did I" Mollie said with a smile.
The next morning Mollie met Peter in the dining room, an urgent letter was delivered by an eagle. Mollie watched as Peter read it silently before rising and almost running out the room. Mollie looked at the letter that Peter had left on the table. Her heart sank.
"Mollie?" Edmund asked, as he walked in the room.
"Edmund" she smiled.
"What's that?" Edmund asked.
"It's a letter" Mollie replied.
"Really Mollie, I thought it was a scone" Edmund said sarcastically
"Oh Edmund, don't laugh, it's the most terrible news" Mollie said.
"My darling what is it?" Edmund asked, rushing forward anxiously.
"Here" Mollie said, she handed him the letter.
"My dear friends, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I received a letter yesterday off the Tisroc, it seems a mysterious plague is sweeping Tashbaan, it only affects humans. I urge you to follow my lead and suspend all trade with Calormen, until this plague had been abolished. Yours in friendship, King Lune.
"No" Edmund said "Please, no"
"What if it affects us Edmund" Mollie asked
"Mollie, don't worry about it. We are very well protected. Peter will have given the order for all trade to cease immediately" Edmund said.
The days passed slowly, everyone on edge and waiting for news. It was two weeks later when another letter arrived, also carried by a great eagle. Peter took it and looked at everyone. Edmund nodded. He unfurled the letter and read.
King Peter,
I deeply regret to inform you of the progress of the plague. It has now entered Archenland.
From the few cases we have had so far we have learnt that it kills. It kills everyone infected. We stand no chance against it.
We have only one choice, we must pray.
Yours in friendship
Lune
King of Archenland
Mollie looked at Edmund, the fear was obvious in her eyes. Edmund understood, Mollie could face any physical foe, but could not take this plague on in combat. The Pevensie all glanced at each other worriedly. Lucy moved from her throne to take Susan's hand, and clasped it tightly in her own. Annabel and Peter clasped hands, both worrying for their children. Edmund and Mollie just looked at each other. Fear in Mollie's eyes while Edmund's were blank.
It was only a week later till Moran ran into the room, he stopped, his claws clacking on the marble floor and bowed to the Monarchs.
"Your Majesties." He looked solemn "We've had a death"
"Within the borders?" Peter asked "A citizen?"
"Yes, it's Lord Flumar's youngest son, Halza" Moran said.
"Excuse me" Lucy said, she rose quickly, her hand over her mouth and almost ran out of the room. Susan rose and made to follow
"Don't" Mollie said, they all looked at her "You are wiser in council than I am. I will check on Lucy"
Mollie didn't have to search long before she found Lucy, stood on a balcony.
"Hello" Mollie said, peering around the doorframe. Lucy tried to brush her tears away but Mollie came forward and took a hand.
"Do not worry Mollie, I am fine" Lucy attempted a smile.
"Don't pretend" Mollie said "None of us are fine. Now tell me the problem"
"I danced with Halza at my coming of age ball" Lucy said "I know it's silly…"
"No, I cannot pretend to remember Halza well but I know his older brother Evin" Mollie replied "Lucy we cannot know what this plague will bring, deaths are a certain but we must remember that those who do lose their life and succumb to Death's clutches will go to Aslan's Country, and Lucy I cannot think of a better place."
"Yes, you're right" Lucy said.
"I often am" Mollie said with a smile. Lucy laughed "You lot just don't realise it"
"Mollie" Lucy said.
"Edmund does that best" Mollie grinned.
"He's had more practise" Lucy replied.
"True" Mollie said "Now, are you ready to go back in?"
"Can we not" Lucy said.
"Of course" Mollie smiled "You have a kind heart Lucy, that is why you feel this most"
"Mollie, I've been meaning to speak to you" Lucy said after a pause.
"Yes?" Mollie asked.
"You know that I have pledged never to marry" Lucy said.
"Yes?" Mollie asked.
"The four thrones must still be filled" Lucy said.
"And?" Mollie asked
"I want to name Callie as my heir" Lucy said "It's taken thought, many years of watching the girls interact, they're all second, or third in Alyanna's case, in line to Peter's and Edmund's throne respectively, so I shall not be upsetting your heir"
"Lucy" Mollie began
"No Mollie, it's not a spur of the moment thing, our thrones stand for something, mine stands for courage, and the unseen acts of kindness we do every day"
"But" Mollie tried again
"Callie represents that the most out of all the children. She's inspiring and kind and she doesn't hold grudges. She reminds me of myself in a small way" Lucy smiled
"I am honoured that you feel my daughter is worthy" Mollie said "Your crown is the heaviest burden for one to take"
"Oh, you will not allow her to take it?" Lucy asked.
"She isn't just my daughter" Mollie said "Edmund must have a say"
"I think that must be the first time you've said that" Lucy smiled.
"I'm trying to become better" Mollie said
"You are better" Lucy said.
"My dear sister, are you recovered?" Susan asked, walking onto the balcony.
"Yes, I am glad Mollie made you stay in counsel, you are far wiser than either of us two" Lucy said.
"Lucy I must consider, I will go and speak to Edmund now" Mollie said "See you later Susan"
