Marlene and Lily were a contrast in everything. Everyone saw the difference in their looks right away. Lily was a fiery redhead with sparkling green eyes that always spat fire. Marlene was a dark beauty with dark hair and even darker eyes.
It wasn't just their looks that were so different, though. While Lily held up to the idea of redheads being quick to temper, Marlene kept a cool head. It wasn't easy to rile her up, and if you managed to get her to scream at you, that meant you were talented when it came to angering witches.
While Lily's heart was derelict, abandoned after James decided he enjoyed the chase more than actually being Lily's girlfriend and quickly broke up with her, Marlene never gave up hope when it came to love. She had never felt the emotion, but she knew deep down that it was there, and she strived to find it, keeping an open heart always.
They were so different, but that was what drew them together.
Marlene found Lily utterly bewitching, captivated by the green eyes that shone with so much emotion and the sarcastic mouth that couldn't hide the witty mind.
Similarly, Lily found Marlene's optimism refreshing, especially since she had grown cynical after the heartbreak she suffered because of James. She thought Marlene was beautiful in her dark way and didn't shy away from the effect the other Gryffindor had on her body.
Neither had ever thought of girls in this way, but neither of them tried to deny what they were feeling as they grew closer.
When their closeness finally culminated in a kiss, both just smiled sweetly at the other when they parted. They accepted their feelings like they accepted everything else about the other.
Gryffindor house accepted the change of their relationship. Only James seemed to have a problem with his ex-girlfriend dating another girl.
Marlene and Lily ignored him, too happy in their new closeness to respond to James' childishness.
So yes, the two girls were very different. They one thing they could agree on though was they wanted to be together and no one would stand in their way.
