Chapter55: Salvation Part I

September 1995
England: Godric's Hollow
Main Street

The Sorcerer, the Aristotele and the werewolf arrived at Godric's Hollow with a pop, apparating directly to the main street that ran through the small village. It was quiet as they stopped and took in their surroundings, checking for any movement amidst the shadows that were seemingly everywhere. Since it was night-time, the sky was dark and the village was only sparsely lit making it easier for their enemies to hide.

Not that Voldemort or Saber were hiding right now…

"Godric's Hollow," Hari whispered as he looked around. "It's been awhile since I was last here."

"Voldemort will have taken Rani to the Greater Grail," Hakuno said clearly. "We need to head there."

"The Greater Grail is beneath the hills behind the old Potter Cottage," Hari responded. "Follow me."

They walked through the quiet village in silence, their eyes watching their surroundings as they made their way towards the Potter Cottage at the edge of the village. The three of them stopped upon reaching the ruined cottage and entered it slowly. The Greater Grail's exact location was in a cavern under the hills behind the cottage and to reach it they needed to use the hidden passageway in the cellar that ran from the cottage itself to the cavern which housed it. There were two other passageways connected to the Dumbledore and Abbott houses but they had been sealed by Chelon Canticle Brigade when they had surrounded the village.

"This looks familiar," Hari frowned as he led them deeper and deeper into the passageway.

"You're right," Shirou agreed as he recalled another passageway leading to a Greater Grail beneath Mount Enzou.

"There's someone up ahead," Hakuno spoke up as they emerged from the passageway and stepped into the darkened cavern beyond.

The one to greet them was not Voldemort…

"Saber…" Shirou trailed off as he recognized his former Servant. Corrupted she maybe, but she was still his Saber.

"Shirou," Saber nodded back from her position a few feet in front of them.

"Where's Rani?" Hakuno asked the question.

"With my current Master deeper in the cavern," Saber answered honestly. "I have been given specific orders to only allow Hari to proceed further."

"Only me huh?" Hari smiled bitterly. "That sounds just like him."

"Go on ahead," Shirou told him. "We'll catch up when we can," Hari glanced at his brother and Hakuno before nodding. He then quickly ran forward, passing by Saber whom merely stood still, not even acknowledging him as he disappeared into the darkness behind her.

"…Are you the one who killed my Archer?" Hakuno questioned the Servant of the Sword.

"Yes," Saber answered simply. "This is war after all."

"I hate you," Hakuno said simply. "But even if I hate you, I care about Rani more than that. So I'm going to help Emiya-san save you, and then I'm going to go after Rani."

"Save me?" Saber mused as she turned her gaze on the white-haired man before her. "Can you?"

"Yes," Shirou replied with a smile. "Yes I can."

"...If that is the case then there is no longer any need for words between us," Saber nodded in understanding as she raised her tainted Holy Sword up and readied herself.

"Saber…you…" Shirou trailed off as he looked upon her corrupted blade.

"This won't be easy," Hakuno gritted her teeth as she clenched her hands into fists.

"Face me with all of your strength, because if you don't then I will cut you down long before you even reach the Holy Grail."

The cavern was just as large as the one beneath Mount Enzou had been so it took a bit of running before Hari finally reached the sight of the Greater Grail itself. Indeed the massive construct was at the very center of the dark cavern, its cup-shaped form stretching upward towards the ceiling. The only difference between this one and the one that his brother destroyed was the fact that there was no black sun clutched in its center like the one that Angra Mainyu had corrupted. That meant this Heaven's Feel ritual was untainted despite the fact that anti-heroes had been summoned in this war like they had first feared. Clearly the summoning of anti-heroes was due to the almost non-existent fail-safes this one had unlike the one that was created in Fuyuki.

As he approached the Greater Grail, he spotted two figures a few feet away from front of it. The first was a young dark-skinned girl with purple hair, no doubt the Lesser Grail called 'Rani' as the reports had read. She was unconscious lying down next to the Greater Grail with her hands clasped together over her chest in prayer. Standing between Hari and her was the familiar inhuman form of the Dark Lord Voldemort, his wand already in hand.

"…So you're finally here, Harry Potter?" Voldemort spoke finally as he looked over at his nemesis.

"Were you expecting me not to show up after what you did at Hogwarts?" Hari said back with a glare. "I thought that you knew me better than that by now."

"Of course I knew you would appear before me sooner or later," Voldemort smirked as he gestured towards Rani. "After all, I have already won this Holy Grail War."

That's right…

Voldemort was a Master and his Servant was Saber. The other six Servants were already dead and with Saber as the last one standing, Voldemort had pretty much already won. Yet, despite that Hari had still come here to face him. Even if Voldemort had already won the war, Hari wouldn't let him achieve his wish. He would stop Voldemort here before the madman was able to touch the Holy Grail and have his wish granted.

It was their only chance…

"You haven't won yet," Hari told him.

"Oh? How do you figure that?" Voldemort sneered in disgust.

"Because I'm still here," Hari answered simply as he raised his wand.

Harry Potter, the Boy-who-lived, the Child of Prophecy, the Chosen-one, the Saviour of the Wizarding World. That's who he had been born as and despite thinking of himself as Hari Emiya first and foremost, he was still the son of James and Lily Potter. As their son and also the son of Kiritsugu Emiya, Hari was someone whose only wish was to protect those closest to him. Call him distorted if you want but to him there was nothing more important that his family and loved ones.

That made things simple…

To protect them, all he had to do was kill Voldemort here and now…

"Not for long," Voldemort said as he raised his own wand.

"Expelliarmus,"

"Avada Kedavra!"

"Trace on."

The words echoed through the cavern as Shirou shot forward toward his former Servant, his hands held out to the side as his Sorcery connected with his Reality Marble. His mastery of the First True Magic Denial of Nothingness had progressed to the point where he only needed to have the image of something in his mind before creating it allowing him to will things into existence at any time. Of course that only applied to things that he actually understood at the molecular level but thanks to his Structural Analysis he was able to gain an understanding of anything he touched. He'd been using it to manufacture gems for Rin's Jewelcraft but even with his Structural Analysis it still took time to get it justright for her and he usually forgot about the details after a while like any other person would.

Thanks to his Reality Marble he didn't really need to remember what a weapon looked like or what it was made out of since every blade he saw was automatically engraved on his very soul whenever he saw one. The Unlimited Blade Works recorded a copy of every sword or Conceptional Weapon he came across and thanks to his adventures over the years, he had quite the collection. Of course they were all imperfect fakes but with his sorcery connected to his Reality Marble, he was able to fill in the gaps and re-forge them in their complete forms whenever he needed to.

Like right now…

The words he'd used as an incantation were done more out of habit than actual need at this point in his life. They just felt so right to say whenever he created something from nothing using his sorcery that he didn't even notice that he used it anymore. Right now he needed a weapon to fight Saber on even ground and despite initially thinking of Archer's favoured swords, Shirou decided to go with another blade entirely.

The Sword in the Stone—Caliburn —materialized in his hands as he swung at his former Servant. The corrupted Saber raised her own black sword up and parried the strike, knocking his blade away. Fast and strong, Saber moved to counterattack, her tainted Excalibur whirling around and slashing at the white-haired Sorcerer. The sound of steel striking streel echoed through the cavern as the two exchanged blows, the air between them alive with inhuman speed and skill.

"You've gotten better Shirou," Saber commented before she knocked Caliburn aside and planted a firm kick to his chest sending him flying back as the ground cracked under them. "But even with my old sword in hand, this is not enough."

Shirou merely smiled as he recovered, skidding across the cavern floor before coming to a stop. She was right, Caliburn was a powerful sword but it had nothing on Excalibur and as such there was no way it would be able to hold up for long in a contest between the two legendary blades. But winning the fight with that sword wasn't the plan here, oh no. The plan was for him to draw her attention leaving herself open for her other opponent to take advantage of and catch her off guard.

"Enhancement Spike," Hakuno muttered as her Formalwear shoes glowed once. "Sword of Repentance," she shot forward in a blur faster than any human was capable of and attacked Saber from behind.

A ruby coloured sword of light in her hands as she closed the distance between them in seconds. Hakuno saw her chance since Saber was preoccupied with Shirou right now and took a swing at the Servant's unprotected back. It was a good plan and would have paid off if it had actually hit but sadly Saber had anticipated that Hakuno would do something like this and turned swiftly. Saber deflected the initial surprise attack and spun, her Excalibur coming round to strike at the long-haired girl's head.

'Shit,' Shirou cursed in thought as he moved to assist.

There was no need…

"Exorcist Blade," Hakuno incanted as a multi-coloured sword of light appeared in her other hand.

She parried Saber's swing and pulled back using her enhanced speed to put some distance between them again. Hakuno wasn't stupid, she knew that in a straight up sword fight Saber was simply the best. The chances of beating Arturia Pendragon in a sword fight were non-existent, she was simply unbeatable. The only way to defeat her was to either catch her off-guard or hit her at long range, and even then she always had her Anti-Fortress Noble Phantasm to fall back on when she was pushed into a corner.

So much for Plan A…

Time for Plan B…

"I am the bone of my sword," Shirou began as he moved to reengage the Servant of the Sword. "Steel is my body and fire is my blood."

"That aria…" Saber whispered as she watched him approach.

"I have crafted over a thousand blades," Shirou continued. "Born from nothing and returned to nothing."

Saber smiled slightly as she brought her sword up and parried the barrage of attacks that Shirou rained down on her with his re-forged Caliburn, the air filling with the sound of metal hitting metal. She deflected it to the side once more and took a swing at his head only for him to duck and roll to the side. She swung down on him while he was getting back up only for her strike to be knocked to his right by Caliburn as he pushed himself left and circled around her.

"So you've completed it?" Saber mused as she backed up a bit and settled back into her customary stance.

"I have withstood pain to create countless weapons," Shirou proclaimed simply. "Constantly moving forward."

"Hn," Saber grunted as she narrowed her eyes. "I see, so that's how it is."

"I have no regrets," Shirou told her. "This is my path to walk."

"Show it to me," Saber demanded. "Show me the dream that you wished to achieve."

"My life has always been," Shirou concluded with a smile. "Unlimited Blade Works."

The world was consumed in fire as a ring of flames sprang out from the white-haired Sorcerer's feet and spread outwards from there. It washed over everything, engulfing the world in a wall of fire that left nothing untouched. Saber's eyes never wavered even as Hakuno covered her face as the fire became blinding, though it was not hot. Eventually it died down and Hakuno opened her eyes as Saber simply stared at the world around them with a small smile.

A barren land…

An orange sky…

A yellow sun on the horizon…

And an infinite number of blades buried in the ground around them…

"You did it," Saber whispered quietly though her voice still carried. "You actually did it."

"…I said that I'd save you," Shirou spoke finally.

"Yes you did," Saber nodded before her face took on a neutral look. "But not even you can save me now."

"Not alone he can't," Hakuno spoke up. "That's why I'm here."

"I see," Saber mused.

"Let's end this, Saber."

The moment that the two spells—Expelliarmus and Avada Kedavra—were cast, a connection was made between the wands that Hari and Voldemort were using. It was Priori Incantatem, a phenomenon that occurred when two wands with matching cores from the same source were used against each other. Voldemort was surprised but Hari wasn't, after all he'd seem the same thing happen when he and Riddle had fought at Hogwarts over a year ago. Voldemort had taken Hari's Phoenix Wand in the Little Hangleton graveyard and Hari had taken Voldemort's Phoenix Wand from Tom Riddle's cold dead hands.

Naturally when used against each other it would trigger Priori Incantatem despite not being used by their original wielders…

More like despite being used against their original wielders…

'What is this?' Voldemort thought with a twinge of fear which he quickly fought down. He was Lord Voldemort! He would not lose to some half-blood child! 'I will crush him once and for all.'

Hari winced as he clutched the Phoenix Wand tightly, his Magic Circuits burning as they struggled to maintain the connection and push back the Dark Lord's assault. Despite the pain he smiled slightly, this was his plan after all. He knew that since Voldemort was using his old wand and Hari was using his old one, there was a possibility that Priori Incantatem could be triggered if they were used against each other. It was a gamble and one that he was happy to say paid off.

It gave him a chance…

His other hand came up, his custom Type-Earth Wand taking aim at the Dark Lord Voldemort. Hari had two wands and by using the Phoenix Wand in his possession he was able to trap Voldemort with Priori Incantatemallowing new wand to be used. Again it was a gamble, one that required Voldemort to use Hari's old Phoenix Wand in their duel and hoping that Priori Incantatem would be activated by the two wands despite not being used by their original wielders.

Thankfully it did…

"Bombarda Maxima," Hari incanted as he fired off a large-scale bombardment curse.

Voldemort's eyes widened in surprise for a moment before they narrowed as the curse approached him. The timing was perfect, there was no way for him to break the connection and shield himself from the curse. If he had another wand then he might have been able to do so but he only had the Phoenix Wand, after all it was the wand he had taken from his nemesis in the Little Hangleton graveyard so why would he need another wand?

There should have been no way for him to survive the curse that Hari threw at him…

Reality didn't agree with that assessment and neither did Voldemort. The Dark Lord broke the connection between their Phoenix Wands and batted the bombardment curse to the side with his robe-covered hand. It struck the ground beside him and exploded, sending up dust and smoke upon impact. Hari narrowed his eyes at the sight and gritted his teeth as he realised that his initial plan hadn't worked. Voldemort's robes were obviously enchanted and had worked with his limited wand-less magic to deflect Hari's attack.

Of course this wouldn't be easy…

'So much for Plan A,' Hari thought as the two stood across from each other.

"Is that it?" Voldemort inquired. "Was that the best that you can do?"

He sounded disappointed…

"My body is made of ice," Hari started as he straightened up and glared at the Dark Lord before him. "Cold is my core and ice is my heart."

"What are you doing now?" Voldemort questioned simply.

"Oh King of Ice, shroud this world and start anew," Hari continued unimpeded as his body started to be covered in a layer of ice.

"You don't get it yet, do you?" Voldemort sneered at his words. "There is nothing that you can do to save those fools."

"I stand alone on the frozen glacier," Hari declared as the ground beneath him started to freeze. "At the dawn of the new age I walk towards the future."

"I've already won!" Voldemort shouted in anger at the boy's blatant defiance.

"My life is," Hari finished with a sad smile. "Endless Winter."

Then came the cold…
