AN: STOP! DRABBLE TIME!
This one was inspired by a prompt Humberto gave me - he asked me if I'd ever written a drabble about Fiyero's first flight on Elphaba's broom.
Gravity
"Do I have to?"
"Do you realise you sound like a five-year-old?" Elphaba retorted instantly. "Come on, Fiyero. It'll be fun, not to mention the fact that it will be a whole lot quicker than walking. I'm sure you'll love it."
"I'm not," Fiyero said, shuddering as he looked at Elphaba's broom. It looked uncomfortable. And flimsy. How was that thing supposed to hold the weight of two people? "What if it snaps in mid-air?"
"Then I hope you will cushion my fall," said Elphaba with a grin.
"Not funny," he muttered. The thought of flying on that thing terrified him. It was scary enough just watching Elphaba do it, but to go up himself...
"Come on, get on behind me," said Elphaba, mounting the broom and looking at him over her shoulder. He swallowed and stepped up behind her, the broom between his legs as he wrapped his arms tightly around Elphaba's waist.
"Ready?" she asked.
He gulped. "No."
She cackled and then kicked off, causing a very unmanly squeak to escape his lips. He held on tightly to her and squeezed his eyes shut as he felt her steering the broom up higher and higher until he was convinced that they must have ended up in space somewhere.
When he cracked open one eye, however, he found that they were only about as high as the treetops. Not that that wasn't high enough for him. In fact, it was already too high. He'd much rather be back on the ground.
"Yero?" Elphaba asked in a strange voice. "This flying thing would be a lot easier if I could breathe."
He grinned sheepishly and loosened his grip on her waist. She exhaled slowly. "Are you really that scared?"
"A little," he confessed. "It's just... I've never done anything like this before."
She smiled softly. "Just relax. I'm not going to let you fall."
He nodded, trusting her. "Okay." He nuzzled her neck and she laughed softly. Slowly, he started looking around him, relaxing a little when he realised he was not going to fall. Not right now, anyway.
"Isn't this amazing?" she asked him after a while. "Come on, don't tell me you're not enjoying this."
He had to admit that the view was breathtaking and it was kind of exhilarating to be this high up in the air, with the wind whipping past them. It was just the two of them up here, nothing and no-one else. It was kind of peaceful and he suddenly understood why Elphaba must love it so much.
"I am," he admitted, putting his chin on her shoulder. "Thank you for showing me this."
She smiled and turned her head to kiss his lips. "You're welcome."
Together they flew – the Witch and the Captain of the Guard, but it didn't feel that way up here. Here, alone, they were just Elphaba and Fiyero, two people in love, nothing more and nothing less. Fiyero smiled and kissed her hair, feeling honoured that she wanted to share this with him... that she'd wanted to show him what it was like to defy gravity.
