Best Forgotten, Best Remembered

Yugi let out a thoughtful sigh as he laid on the green grass, enjoying the heat from the summer sun shine down on him. The day was a perfect one, children laughing, not a cloud in the sky, it was a day one could only dream about. Yugi's thought's though were currently the opposite of the weather.

"It must of been horrible, I do not know how you managed to keep on going," Yugi said softly, tilting his head slightly to the side so he could see Yami in spirit form. "Waiting for someone to solve your puzzle while waiting in that darkness...not knowing what to do, being nameless for so long. If...if it is not too much of a personal thing to ask...how did you die?"

"I...do not remember, but I do know that it was not one of my personnel or anyone close to me," Yami answered honestly with a far away expression on his face. "I remember going though several random pierods where the trauma of my death would cause me to do something or act out of personallity..."

"Like how you were slightly more insane back when we first met each other?" Yugi asked as he went over the memories of their first meetings. "I still cannot believe that you of all people would play Shadow Games involving penalties like death and insanity."

Yami gave a weak chuckle. "Yes, well at times I found myself sucked back into the past. It was as if I was reliving certain events. It felt as if I was floating around in some kind of limbo because I could not remember my own name...I knew I had one but it was as if the darkness was teasing me and hiding my name from me."

"At least you know that is not the case any longer, and you are recovering from the trauma of dying," Yugi said softly as he offered his dear friend, and secret crush, a kind comforting smile. "Do you remember how you died? To suffer such trauma as you did it must of been a horrible death."

"I only remember a few things, here and there," Yami answered honestly as he slowly sat down on the grass besides his Light. "I remember stone walls, old drawings on the walls, an alter to the God's and hundreds of torches."

"It sounds like you might of been inside a special pyramid or a hidden temple," Yugi said as a thoughtful expression crossed his face. "Do you remember if you were being chased or attacked? Maybe Bakura in the past was having one of his normal...disagreements...with you and your people?"

"I...am not sure Yugi," Yami answered with a heavy sigh as he turned and gazed up at the familiar sun. "Like I mentioned, I cannot seem to remember all of how I died...I do sort of remember walking along a high stone wall that looked like a bridge at one point. Maybe I slipped because of an attack or something caused me to fall off of the stone wall causing me to fall to my death?"

Silence fell between the pair as both Yugi and Yami thought over the other's words. Memories, a scare few that he still processed, flowed though Yami's mind in a comforting yet cruel manner. Closing his eyes Yami allowed the memories of his forgotten past to consume him as he tried to remember the blurry faces that belonged to the faces of those he had held dear in his life.

"You know...it does not matter to me who you where," Yugi said softly, though his voice cut though Yami's mind like a hot knife through butter. "What matters is the person you are right now, and I like who you are. A lot of other people do to Yami, you have helped so many people that to me it really does not matter if you were some kind of evil person in your past."

"Thank you," Yami said softly with a heavy heart as he slowly opened his eyes. "But I would like to know what sort of person I was when I was...alive. I want to remember all of those faces that I held so close and dear to my heart. I feel as if I am doing them a great dishonour to not remember them."

Yugi simply stared up at the sky as he allowed Yami's words to sink in. Images of his father flashed though his mind causing Yugi to frown slightly. Unlike the times he remembered his mother, the kind woman who had raised him with her father when her husband had disappeared, he could not remember anything positive about his father. The smell of alcohol filled his senses along with the memories of angry yelling and large amounts of pain.

"Sometimes things that you have forgotten is best left forgotten," Yugi said softly, surprising Yami. "Sometimes our minds cannot handle the trauma that goes alongside these memories so we block them out. Maybe...maybe it is for the best that you have forgotten? I am sorry for bringing all of these memories up Yami, I over stepped my line, I should of never of even thought of the question that started it all."

"Yugi..." Yami said softly in worry, his voice trailing off. "What do you mean?"

"Yami...you are not the only one with blank spots in their memory, but there is a difference between the two of us," Yugi answered with a heavy sigh as he watched a flock of birds fly over head. "Unlike you I pushed the memories to the back of my mind trying to forget them...to ignore and not suffer though the pain that they gave me."

Yami winced at Yugi's words. "I am sorry Yugi, I almost forgot about your...Sire. His actions were unforgiveable. I wish I could of done something to help you...to protect you..."

"It is alright, do not worry about it," Yugi replied, he tilted his head to the side and offered Yami a weak forced smile. "I was only about two or three at the time, we had not met then, besides there would of been very little you could of done to help me. What with you being stuck in the puzzle and all."

"True, sadly true," Yami said as he let out a heavy sigh. "We both know the pain and torture that our memories bring us. While I wish to remember mine and remember what I have forgotten you wish the opposite. What I must be trying to do...what it must be causing you...Yugi, I-"

"Do not worry Yami, you are not hurting or upsetting me," Yugi said as he cut Yami off, he rolled his eyes good naturally. "You know that with our bond there is nothing I can hide from you. Besides, I would not hide something as important as this from you, not when we share a body and such a deep bond. I have also...well I have not gotten over it but..."

"You are coping with your memories, you are not allowing them to control your life," Yami finished with an understanding look. "Maybe I should try to do the same thing?"

"Yami...our situations are different, we are two different people. Even if we share a body we have our own minds and our own personalities and our own separate past," Yugi said as he turned to stare up at the clear summer sky. "We deal with how things happen to us in different ways, we have our own experiences and how we react to them and what we take away from them differently. If you started to try and handle things like I do then I fear the consequences."

"...I just want to remember while not causing any pain for you," Yami sighed as he allowed himself to relax as he laid back into the soft green grass with Yugi. "I want to know why I cannot remember things clearly for, I want to know why people call me Pharaoh for...I have so many questions that I want answering...and it all leads back to those two questions that you asked me Yugi..."

"How did you die? Was the trauma that bad that it forced you to push your memories aside and block them out?" Yugi said, repeating the questions that he knew Yami was on about. "Maybe...maybe we should ask Grandpa for a starting point? He has been on a lot of digs, he must of seen some tombs or temples that have drawings or carvings in them that look like you or the puzzle or even a little hint in a complex riddle."

Yami nodded his head. "I agree, and if all else fails we could always get Ryou to get Bakura to tell us the truth as it sounds like he knows the truth."

"Yami...what if...what if once you find out the truth it is not what you hoped it to be?" Yugi asked softly, the tension in the air rose. "I mean...this is a long shot, but what if you were not really a Pharaoh in Egypt hundreds and thousands of years ago? What is you are from that time but you were some sort of thief or murder? And they called you 'Pharaoh' because of how you were the royalty of people like thieves and murders?"

"I had thought that to begin with too," Yami said with a small twinkle in his eyes surprising Yugi. "But with how Bakura has been going on about being the King of Thieves and how it is my fault being the Pharaoh I came to the conclusion that I must of been someone of royal blood."

"That would shoot that troubled thought out of the air pretty fast," Yugi said with a small twitch of his lips. "Bakura can be very...boastful about being the King of Thieves and how he has pulled off so many difficult thefts."

"I wonder...I wonder what it was like for Bakura back when we were alive," Yami said thoughtfully causing the air to shift slightly. "I...from how he talks he knows everything, we were alive at the same time and he knew me, or of me, for a very long time somehow..."

Yugi sighed. "You are wondering how come Bakura remembers the past and you do not?"

"Yes," Yami said as he offered Yugi a small quiet chuckle. "Am I that easy to read?"

"Not for everyone else, but for me yes. You cannot share a body and bond like we do without getting to know the person very well," Yugi answered causing Yami to blush slightly. "Remember what we just talked about? Trauma? Maybe Bakura has seen so much and dealt with so much Trauma in his life before he died and became a spirit that he was able to deal with it in a different manner. One that allowed him to keep his memories?"

"Sometimes...I wish that we had swapped situations," Yami said softly causing Yugi to turn his head and gaze at him in worry. "The way Bakura acts sometimes...how he holds himself, the nightmares, the dreams...everything that he remembers...it must be a horrible weight to deal with."

"Bakura has Ryou now to help him though," Yugi said as he offered Yami silent support. "Things have gotten better for him...Bakura has become more stable. He is no longer alone."

Yami simply let out a soft hum at his precious Light's words, as he gazed up at the sky his mind flew with the birds while his worries kept him firmly grounded on the soil underneath him.

"Yami..." Yugi's soft voice came to Yami's ears, it held so many emotions it warmed Yami's heart as he picked out the main few. "You need to remember something...just like Bakura you are no longer alone. You have your friends, you have a life here and...you have me standing at your side. We will get though this, together."

Warmth filled Yami's heart and soul at his Light's words. Happiness filled him chasing away the depressing thoughts that had been threatening to take over his mind. Unable to help himself Yami reached out and wrapped his hand around Yugi's smaller one. Silently they laid on the soft summer grass looking up at the summer blue sky. Both of them silently healing with the help of the other's support, trust and companionship.
