Anders stared at Wynne; her face was pale, her hands trembling as she gripped a sheet of parchment in her hands. "She didn't make it did she?"

Wynne shook her head; gazing at the letter from Gwaren. It had been delayed in reaching them and discovering the Teyrna had been dead these past months was deeply upsetting; expected perhaps given the length of time, but upsetting all the same.

Anders slumped into a seat. "We shouldn't have spent so much time working on an antidote; I should have concentrated on spirit healing, I should have …" He glanced up as Wynne gently rested a hand on his as she settled next to him.

"We did what we could."

Anders shook his head. "We should be out there; getting experience so we can build up our skills, not just from bloody tomes and what healing we do here!"

"We cannot save everyone Anders."

"No but we could save some of them! Not everyone is a blood mage desperate to go on the rampage!" He shuddered and turned away. "What's the point; nothing will ever change."

"Anders prove yourself loyal to the Circle and you will be allowed some freedoms."

A strangled noise erupted from Anders throat. "The Circle's idea of freedom is not mine."

Wynne sighed and rose. "Anders one day you will have to come to terms with life here. I hope for your sake you do it soon."

Glaring at the windowless room Anders gulped back the sense of suffocation. He glanced up as Eloen and Jowan joined him.

"I take it she's dead then." Eloen murmured.

Anders glared. "Do you have to sound so heartless?"

"I didn't mean … I just …"

Anders sighed and shook his head. "I can't stay here."

"Anders we aren't ready."

"I don't care. I'll find a way to destroy my phylactery when they follow me, are you coming?"

Jowan frowned. "Anders please don't do anything when you're upset. Just calm down then we will talk about it, alright?"

Anders sighed deeply. "I'm tired I need some sleep." He slipped out of the room ignoring the concerned glances of his friends and walked the corridors of the Circle. Sometimes they seemed endless and other days there seemed not to be space enough to catch a breath. He had never met the Teyrna and yet her death ached within him. He hated feeling helpless. He quickened his pace down an empty corridor heading for the stairs; startled when Ser Gerin strode ahead of him and barred his way.

"Where you going in such a hurry mage?"

"My room." Anders stated trying to walk passed him; hissing in alarm as the Templar gripped his arm and shoved him hard against the wall.

"I think you are planning on trying to escape; again."

Anders met Gerin's piercing gaze and locked his fear within him. "I'm just going to my room."

"I've seen you sneaking with those friends of yours."

Anders flinched as Gerin's finger trailed across his jaw.

"I think you and I should have a private little chat about how mages should behave."

"How about you and I have a talk about how Templars should behave." Dominic stated coldly.

Anders glanced to the other Templar in surprise not having heard him approach, clutching his aching arm as Gerin let go.

"Move on Dominic, this is nothing to do with you."

Dominic's eyes darkened slightly; his body tensing. "You're a troublemaker Gerin, you are the kind of Templar that gives the rest of us a bad name." He glanced to Anders and gestured for him to leave.

Anders hissed in pain as Gerin grabbed him.

"He isn't going anywhere." Gerin gasped in surprise as Dominic's hand wrapped around his wrist and twisted sharply, his fingers flying open.

Anders stumbled back along the corridor somehow unable to leave Dominic alone with him.

"You'll be sorry you interfered." Gerin spat.

"Mages are people too Gerin; something you seem to have forgotten."

"Mages are weapons; things of destruction, the moment you lose sight of that is the moment they sink their claws into you and you're dead."

"Mages are not here to be abused Gerin."

"You're a fool Dominic." He finally managed to wrench his hand away. "You cosy up to these mages and they will turn on you. Defend these mages and you're nothing but a traitor."

"It is my role to protect these mages!" Dominic snapped.

"That's where you're wrong. It is our role to protect this world from these things! They are demons Dominic, every one of them!"

"Gerin!"

"You'll see Dominic; one day you will see I'm right and I hope I'm there to see it. I hope I'm there when you realise they are monsters."

Dominic shook his head as Gerin moved away and turned to Anders. "Did he hurt you?"

Anders shook his head. "He won't let this go."

"I can handle Ser Gerin; go on now, best get to where you were going."

Anders hesitated and then moved over to him. "Did … did you hear about the Teyrna?"

Dominic nodded. "I wish we could have helped."

Raking his fingers through his hair Anders let out a heavy sigh. "Me too." They stood silently before Anders gave a weak smile. "Well thanks." He headed on to his room his eyes dark with purpose; Gerin had been right, he was planning to escape and as far as he was concerned the sooner the better.

Fergus stared at the letter and sank onto a seat the colour draining from his face.

Oriana frowned and moved to his side. "Fergus?"

"It's Nate; his father has sent him to squire in the Free Marches!"

"He did not mention this to you in Gwaren?"

"He didn't know."

Oriana glanced to her husband in surprise. "Perhaps an opportunity arose."

Fergus sighed. "Perhaps; though the tone to his letter suggests he has upset his father in some way."

"Why would he not tell you explicitly?"

"In case the letter was intercepted. He must have procured his own messenger." He glanced to the letter for Anora wondering why he would not have sent it to her directly. Maker Nate what have you done?

"You are worried for him?"

"I have no doubt Nate will distinguish himself."

Gently cupping his cheek Oriana met his gaze. "That is not what I asked my husband."

"He will be fine." Fergus smiled and laid down the letter; his hand gently resting on the slight rounding of her belly. "I will simply have to send the messenger with our news a little further than I had anticipated." He pressed a soft kiss to her lips. "I love you." He murmured.

Oriana smiled and placed her hand over his. "I love you too my love."

Nathaniel lay on his bedroll and gazed up at the stars; the ship had docked in Wycome and Ser Rodolphe had been there to meet him. If he had expected a warm greeting from his mother's cousin he was disappointed. Rodolphe had looked him up and down and with a grunt that could have meant anything, thrust the reins of a horse into his hands, got onto his own horse and moved off. Nathaniel hauled himself into the saddle and urged the horse after him. They had travelled the majority of the day with not a word passing between them. Nathaniel could feel the man's obvious displeasure. He was half tempted to gallop off and disappear; but he had little coin and he knew the skills he would be taught would serve him well, besides he could not disgrace his family by fleeing.

Vigil's Keep had been a difficult place to endure, but now parted from all he had ever known Nathaniel felt his heart ache for those dim corridors and cold rooms, for the garden, but most of all for the feeling of belonging, no matter how painful that had become. His thoughts drifted to Anora, his fingers resting on the feather at his neck. One day she would be Ferelden's Queen; but she would always be the girl who had captured his heart. With a sigh he steeled himself; this was his life for the moment and while he hoped to make his father proud, he was all too aware that his own actions may have made that impossible. He sighed deeply and closed his eyes; Anora was beyond him, she always had been and perhaps in the Free Marches he could finally truly accept that.

xXx

As the first shimmers of pink drifted across the sky, Rendon closed his eyes and felt the cool breeze drift around him as the ship finally left the harbour. He had sent a messenger on ahead to inform Loghain he would be visiting Gwaren. He paced restlessly on the deck thinking and rethinking his plan. He consoled himself that once a betrothal was confirmed between Jayden and Delilah; he himself would do everything in his power to ensure that Loghain and his family did not face more hardship. It seemed strange that the Orlesians themselves had provided him the opportunity to both strengthen his own family and in turn he would ensure Ferelden was strengthened. Forgive me Loghain; but know that when this is done I will be at your side through any storm that may come. We will be stronger for my actions, not diminished by them.

Anora quickly read through Fergus's letter her eyes widening with his news. She allowed a smile as Fergus expressed his excitement and concerns that his first child was due they believed in August, she had no doubt he would be a wonderful father. She finally turned her attention to the sealed letter within his. Carefully she broke the wax and unfolded the parchment.

Anora,

Father is sending me to the Free Marches where I am to squire. By the time you receive this I will likely already be there. This is not what I want; but I have no choice.

There is so much I wish I could say, but I know you know what I would say, were I to have seen you before my departure. Please know that you will always be a part of my heart and your friendship means more to me than I could possibly express.

I wish you a long and happy life Anora and I pray the Maker watches over you.

I will remain forever your friend and humble servant.

Nathaniel

Anora lay on her bed clutching Nathaniel's letter to her breast; refusing to allow herself to cry. Closing her eyes she tried to ignore the pain of her heart; believing love to be the most cruel emotion she had ever experienced. Her mother was gone; Nathaniel was far away and ahead of her lay marriage that would be based on a lie and her betrayal. She did not deserve Cailan's love and part of her wanted to tell him what she had done; but then she would lose him too and no matter how selfish it was, she couldn't lose her friend. I will always love you Nate; but I have to do what is right. Anora glanced to her reflection in the mirror and slowly sat up. I will be the Queen Ferelden needs and the wife Cailan deserves. She shivered and glared at herself. "You will be these things!" She snapped at herself; tucking Nathaniel's letter back into Fergus's and locking them in the chest in the corner of the room. She hesitated as she rose; her hand fluttering to her heart. "I can do this." She whispered; straightening and catching a glimpse of herself in the mirror, a future Queen staring back at her.

Loghain rubbed his eyes and accepted the letter from the messenger; slumping into his chair in the study leaving it on the desk untouched. He had no idea who it was from; the seal was unknown to him and at the moment he didn't care. It had been a long few months and his heart ached as painfully as it had the moment he had discovered Celia had returned to the Maker. His fingers drifted across the desk; an idle movement that did little to rouse him from his thoughts. Things were a little easier between himself and his children though he knew he was still keeping his distance much of the time, seeing Celia in them was almost too painful. He had reached out a little and for the moment it seemed to be enough, Aelfraud filling the gaps he could not yet bridge. He sighed and drummed his fingers restlessly on the table. He almost envied Aelfraud; while he felt pain as he looked at his children, Aelfraud seemed to find strength that part of Celia continued on. He felt it too; but it was diminished beneath the rough guilt of his grief. He glanced up at the knock; gritting his teeth just wanting to be left alone.

Scheneshal Pelmor edged nervously into the room. "Your Lordship; Arl Howe has arrived."

Loghain rubbed his forehead having forgotten about the message to say the Arl was on his way. "Please show him in Pelmor."

"Of course your Lordship."

Loghain rose when Rendon entered and clasped his arm. "You had a good journey I trust."

"The sea was calm enough. You are looking … better."

Loghain gave a rough snort. "I look awful Rendon you have no need to sugar coat me."

Rendon winced. "These are difficult times."

Loghain settled back onto his seat rubbing his stubble; his hair pulled back in a tight knot, he had little patience for his usual style. He had lost weight and some muscle tone from lack of his usual training. Deep bruises were beneath his eyes and he had an unhealthy pallor. "So Rendon, what can I do for you?"

"In truth I have no reason to be here other than concern for your welfare."

"There is no need my friend, I live."

"Do you? You look as though you have barely left this room."

"I am … better than I was."

"Glad I am to hear it, however I did have a proposal. I am travelling to the Free Marches directly from here to see Nathaniel."

Loghain looked at him in confusion. "Nathaniel is in the Free Marches?"

"He was desperate to train with his mother's cousin; it was her wish for him and he wanted to gain a wider perspective so he can better run the Arling when his time comes. Maker it was harder than I ever imagined to let him go."

"He is a credit to you Rendon."

"He is. My proposal is you come with me; get you away from here, perhaps give you a little distance from your grief, at least for a few weeks."

"I cannot leave Anora and Jayden."

"Bring them along; the journey will do them good too." Rendon felt as though he was holding his breath as Loghain seemed to consider it, praying to the Maker to be on his side for once.

"It is too soon Rendon."

Rendon almost let out a sigh of relief. "I understand."

"I am sorry you made the trip for nothing; though I am grateful for the offer. You will at least stay a few nights since you are here I hope."

"Yes; I am settled at the Wyvern's Rest."

Loghain did not press for the Arl to stay within the estate knowing he was not the best company.

Rendon glanced to the desk feeling his stomach churn in anxiety, the letter had already been delivered, though it appeared unopened. The messenger had obviously been swifter than he had anticipated; but he remained confident that Warin would deal with that particular loose end. He felt a prickle of uncertainty; when the letter was opened there would be no turning back, but he had come too far to stop now. He felt his heart lurch as Loghain began idly playing with the corner of the parchment.

"Perhaps you should open that rather than playing with it."

Loghain sighed deeply. "Honestly Rendon I would be happy if I didn't need to deal with any correspondence. Pelmor has proven himself rather adept at running the day to day affairs."

"So why has he not dealt with that?"

Loghain lifted the letter and passed it to Rendon. "He didn't know the seal. As it happens neither do I."

Rendon pretended to study the seal and passed it back. "It has me a little intrigued; I have never seen that seal before."

Loghain shook his head. "Then I shall sate your curiosity." He opened the seal frowning at the unsigned note.

Did you believe our vengeance would end with your wife's death? I am the shadow; the swift blade in the darkness. For the lives you took and for the Empire; I am coming and I will finish what was started.

Loghain gazed at the words momentarily uncomprehending; they seemed to swim in and out of his vision, their meaning tugging at the corners of his consciousness. He wondered how such words could be written in such a poor hand before becoming vaguely aware that his body seemed to be draining of all warmth, the building tension making his muscles scream. For one brief moment the grief of his heart was replaced with hatred and rage so deep it was all consuming. All the anger and pain he had bottled up seemed to surge through him. He was aware of Rendon standing asking what was wrong, but he couldn't answer. The walls of his self-restraint crumbled and Loghain rose fury burning in him, his fist driving into the stone wall barely registering the shock wave jarring his shoulder and his knuckles bursting. He span around to Rendon who was watching him in fearful alarm. "It never ends!" He snarled.

Rendon read the words he himself had crafted and looked to Loghain seeing fury and pain. He had gone too far; he had known it would be this way and yet he had gone ahead regardless. For the sake of his family's future he had to stay this course; yet he had hoped for desperation, the need for the help of a friend from the already broken Teyrn, not the return of his fire. "Loghain …"

"Those bastards are taunting me!"

"This is hardly a taunt Loghain."

"No? I think that is exactly what it is. Why send me this letter; any fool would realise security would be increased with such a threat. No; this is a twist of the knife." He grabbed the parchment from the desk where Rendon had placed it; crushing it in his fist and hurling it at the wall, as though it was a dagger into the heart of the writer. "I swear when I discover who sent this I will end this once and for all; even if it does mean war!"

Rendon realised he was quickly losing control of the situation. "Loghain forgive me; but are you truly willing to risk Jayden's safety?"

"Of course not; but the estate is well guarded and who would risk being pulverised by one golem let alone two?"

"No security is fool proof my friend; as well you know."

The fire that had burned so brightly spluttered and died with Rendon's words. Loghain sank onto his chair feeling despair grip him. As panic began to rise; he steadied himself knowing Jayden was training with Cauthrien and several other guardsmen, the golems in attendance, it was the only reason he held back from going to him.

"I am sorry Loghain; that was not tactful."

"The truth rarely is." He muttered; clenching his fists to prevent their tremble, glaring at the blood on his knuckles.

"What will you do?"

"You mean apart from finding who wrote that and driving my sword through his or her chest?"

Rendon only just managed to suppress the shiver of anxiety. "Apart from that, yes."

"Maker I have no idea what other measures to take; if I introduce more of a guard presence I run the risk of having Gwaren's citizens going from feeling protected, to feeling restricted and potentially threatened."

"That would be unfortunate." Retaking his own seat Rendon appeared deep in thought for several moments before he glanced cautiously to the agitated Teyrn. "I have a suggestion my friend if you will hear it."

Loghain raised his head and gestured for the Arl to continue.

"My visiting Nathaniel may provide a fortuitous opportunity. I could take Jayden with me; tell him that he is going to page with a noble family in the Free Marches as Nathaniel is. He is certainly of an age when that could be expected; despite the timing. In the meantime Jayden will in fact be in Amaranthine as my page until such time as the writer of this threat is discovered. He will have a different name and background; a change of hairstyle and outfit, such measures will be enough to alter his appearance to ensure he goes unrecognised."

"You have a mind for intrigue my friend and while I appreciate the suggestion I would prefer to keep my son close."

"Loghain; can you afford not to take advantage of this opportunity to catch these monsters? Any spy; or indeed the writer of this note will be unlikely to restrain themselves thinking Jayden easily caught so far from home. While visiting Nathaniel I will speak with Rodolphe; he has contacts throughout the Free Marches, he will report back to me if anyone appears suspicious asking certain questions and such like and I will request he detains them. The network is already set up to protect my son. Rodolphe has those in his service who are … skilled in eliciting information from others. This can be done in conjunction with searching for the messenger and seeing if he has any information regarding who sent the message." He leaned closer to Loghain; his voice soothing. "I will tell Jayden the truth once we have set sail. I can guarantee you he will be so relieved he is returning Ferelden it will soothe any pain caused by the deception; perhaps he may even see it as an opportunity. Warin my personal guard will become Jayden's, discreetly of course. You are aware of Warin's skills and he would give his own life to ensure your son's safety, you have my word."

"I am beginning to wonder who is the strategist between us." Loghain murmured.

Rendon bit his lip tasting blood; he had been too eager. He shrugged; his tone a little sharp. "To keep one's children safe in another country strategy is a necessity."

Loghain glanced at him startled. "I apologise Rendon, you are a good friend and I meant no offense."

Rendon swallowed painfully guilt clawing at his chest, but he steeled himself. "As are you Loghain."

"However; as much as I appreciate your offer, I believe my son is safest here."

"Of course. I would imagine were Celia here she would say the same." He saw the flicker of pain in Loghain's eyes and knew his comment had hit home. "I thought I might go to the market; would you like to dine together this evening?"

Loghain nodded; his eyes fixed on the crumpled parchment. "Come back when you are done Rendon; if you would."

"Of course my friend." Rendon slipped out of the study and headed out of the estate, two of his guards flanking him. Despite that not going quite how he had hoped; he was confident he would find a way to persuade Loghain to come around to his plan.

xXx

Loghain picked up the parchment and smoothed it out on the desk before sending a servant to find Anora and Aelfraud. When they arrived he had them sit while he explained the threat; watching Aelfraud carefully, fearful what this would do to his health, but needing his counsel.

Aelfraud shook his head; his hands clutching the parchment, staring at Loghain. "Maker why can't they leave us alone?"

"I will find out who sent this Aelfraud. I swear it."

Anora frowned trying to keep a tight hold on her anger and panic. "It looks as though it was written by a child!"

Loghain rubbed his forehead. "Perhaps it was; or someone who is illiterate, duped into writing it." He met Anora's shocked gaze. "The penmanship could not be traced back to the person who wrote it and if illiterate then they would have no idea what they were writing."

"It was a tactic employed at times during the rebellion to protect people." Aelfraud murmured. "Used by both sides."

"So whoever is behind this is no fool. Tracing the messenger may bring us no closer to whoever is behind this." Anora muttered.

"It will not stop me from pursuing that lead; but yes, it may prove a dead end. Rendon was with me when I opened it; he suggested something, I was hesitant to take him up on the offer, but I wanted your thoughts." He quickly outlined the Arl's plan."

Aelfraud frowned. "But surely Jayden is safer here, he has his golems and we can assign more guards."

"This may be our only chance to find those who threaten us."

"So you would use him as bait?" Aelfraud wheezed; taking a shuddering breath to calm himself, patting Anora's hand as she knelt beside him.

Loghain swallowed painfully. "He is already threatened. By the time any spy is aware Jayden is in the Free Marches he will be on his way to Amaranthine. Yes Jayden will be the bait; but he will be disguised and protected from danger."

"You think his appearance can be changed enough to fool anyone?"

"I would imagine Warin can pull it off if anyone can."

Anora noticed her grandfather visibly relax. "Warin; as in the Arl's personal guard Warin?"

"Indeed." Aelfraud stated; his breathing easing. "Now there is a man who knows how to go unnoticed. Yes he could do it and Jayden would be safe with him; his skills are … certainly lethal."

Anora frowned slightly. "You're sure?"

"The rebellion demanded much from us." Loghain stated softly. "More than perhaps any of us could afford, but we did what we had to do. Warin is fiercely loyal to Rendon and I believe he will protect Jayden to his last breath as Rendon has promised. He will get Jayden across the Free Marches safely without drawing attention to them."

"It sounds as though you have made up your mind." Anora stated; keeping her arms stiffly at her sides trying to hide her agitation.

"The plan does have some merit Anora." Aelfraud soothed.

"But it is barely three months since mom … since she … it will hurt him too much!"

Loghain gently cupped her cheek meeting her surprised gaze. "I swore to your mom after Jayden's abduction that we would do anything to keep him safe, suffer any sacrifice. I would do no less for you. I know this hurts; but we must make this as easy as possible for Jayden."

"He won't agree." Anora pointed out.

"Jayden does not need to agree." Loghain stated softly.

"He will hate us."

"He will understand."

"Will he? I'm not sure I would."

Loghain sighed and stared at the parchment.

Anora walked to the window and gazed out; her fingers drifting across the cold stone of the wall. "In some ways having Jayden in Amaranthine rather than the Free Marches will be harder to bear."

Loghain frowned. "How so?"

"To know Jayden is so close and yet have no contact with him; to know he is in Amaranthine but as someone else …"

Loghain crossed the room and gently clasped his daughter's hand. "It will only be for a short time."

Anora met her father's gaze realising how much he needed to believe it. "I hope you're right."

"I will speak with Rendon when he returns; for now I will speak to Captain Marcus and apprise him of the situation. I will have him send men to trace this messenger." He glanced to Anora. "Perhaps our contact in Orlais may be able to shed some light on this."

Anora rose and nodded. "I will speak to Erlina immediately."

"Not a word to Jayden until I speak to Rendon. Maker this will be difficult; I wish I could tell him he will be going to Amaranthine, but Rendon is right he must believe he is going to the Free Marches at least until he leaves Gwaren."

Aelfraud glanced at him anxiously. "Just how soon will they be leaving?"

"The day after tomorrow."

Aelfraud rose and gripped Loghain's arm with surprising strength. "You find these bastards and you end this Loghain once and for all. I likely have few years left and I will not spend them missing a part of my family."

"I would not be parted from my son longer than necessary Aelfraud; surely you know that." He sighed as he noticed the expression Anora quickly hid. "I know grief has led me to pull away from you both Anora and perhaps one day you will forgive me; but surely you wouldn't think …"

Anora moved to her father and hugged him. "I forgive you." She smiled as she felt some of the tension ease from her father.

xXx

Leaning back in his chair Loghain felt himself beginning to give into his exhaustion; he and Rendon had spent the last three hours discussing a workable plan, but it still sat uneasy with him. He turned his mind to Amaranthine for a moment. "Jayden and Thomas have not had a good history."

"That is true enough; but my son is older now, not quite the foolish, impulsive, easily led boy he once was, but you have my word he will believe Jayden simply a new page. He has not seen him in some time."

"And Delilah?"

"Delilah is kept busy with her grandmother and she rarely comes to the Keep."

"I will need to contact Maric."

Rendon slowly rubbed his chin. "Is that wise? Bards infiltrated Denerim and the Palace, I am concerned their security may as yet be compromised. I would also advise against telling Bryce. I do not suspect Bryce has any direct connection with Orlais; however he has been meeting with Eamon and the same cannot be said for him. I would advise against telling Teagan for the same reason."

"Eamon would not do this." Loghain muttered. "I suspected him once before and it was unjustified."

Rendon kept his face neutral; knowing he had to be careful about how he nurtured this particular seed of doubt. "Yes; but why risk it until we have a lead on who sent the message?"

"I cannot keep Maric in the dark about this."

"Then perhaps you could speak to him in person; you can at least ensure you are alone."

"Perhaps." Loghain sighed. "Maric should never have made me a Teyrn."

"Ferelden would have been the poorer for it if he had not." He clasped Loghain's shoulder. "Whatever you decide I will support you."

Hadrian urged his horse on through the trees; it was not often he travelled to this part of Ferelden and he had been impressed by Gwaren's defences. The watchtowers were the same as those that had been springing up throughout Ferelden. Many had stables and in some places small holdings were appearing around them and the one he hopped to reach within two days had a tavern recently opened. He had stopped there on his way to Gwaren and had found the barmaid to be very friendly, he was hoping for a repeat of their time together. He grinned to himself; hair a deep chestnut that reached her waist, eyes a soft hazel and lips that were as luscious as the rest of her. That had been a good night, good morning too and she certainly hadn't been shy about asking him to drop in on his way back.

As the shadows lengthened he urged his horse into a faster pace; if he reached the watchtower a mile or two along the Brecilian passage he could at least sleep in the stables, they had been a Maker send, particularly when travelling in winter. He slowed to a trot as he noticed an old man sitting on a tree stump and pulled up next to him. "You alright?"

The old man nodded. "Just resting lad." He croaked.

"You shouldn't be out here at night alone, which way are you heading?"

"My family is out near Ostagar."

Hadrian slipped off the horse. "Why don't you get up on the horse; we aren't that far from the Watchtower. The stables will be dry and warm at least; looks like it might rain."

"That is mighty kind of you lad."

Hadrian grinned. "No problem, let me help …" His eyes widened as the steel sank into the flesh at his throat preventing him from crying out. He clutched at the old man before collapsing to the ground, the horse bolting at the scent of blood.

Warin dragged Hadrian's body to the pyre he had already prepared and watched it burn along with his blood splattered disguise. He turned as the flames became embers and headed towards Gwaren; this part of his mission complete.

xXx

Loghain made his way to Jayden's room; hesitating before he knocked, easing open the door.

Jayden glanced up; startled as his father entered the room. He put down the book he was reading and shuffled over on the bed wondering if his father would sit next to him, offering a faint smile when he did. He grew steadily anxious at the silence and his father's seeming inability to look at him. He reached out and gently laid his hand on his. "Dad; you look worried."

Loghain saw unconditional love and trust in his gaze and found himself unable to speak. He couldn't bring himself to tell him the truth. He swallowed the lump in his throat, words spilling out before he could consider them. "Rendon brought news of an opportunity; one I have accepted."

Jayden stared wide eyed at his father barely able to comprehend the words being spoken to him. While he had always known being a page was the starting point of his route to becoming a Knight, he had never expected having to leave Ferelden and so soon after his mother's death was jarring. "Why the Free Marches?" He gasped; managing to find his voice.

Loghain swallowed the lump in his throat; the sensation of swallowing glass almost making him choke. "This is a good opportunity Jayden and you have always had a thirst for travel and to see other countries."

Jayden's mind span; he couldn't bear to leave his home, at least not yet, desperately scrambling to give himself time. "Could I not go next year? Why does it have to be now?"

"Jayden this is how it must be."

He wanted to run; hide from the terrible reality. It could be years before he returned. Pain swelled within his chest; his heart hammering, his lungs feeling as though they were being constricted. He would be separated from his family and terror that his grandfather would pass in his absence almost choked him. Jayden forced away the thought only to be weighed down by the realisation that he would be unable to visit his mother's tree; that he would be without his father. Even now bowed down with grief he still found himself stronger in his father's presence. He shuddered as he thought of being parted from Anora and realised in horror that the friendships he cherished would inevitably change in his absence. He didn't dare think of Lyra; of the future he so desperately wanted that had never felt further away. He felt a hand on his shoulder; his father gripping him almost painfully.

"I know this is difficult …"

His mind span searching for some glimmer of light. "At least I will be able to speak to you." Jayden whispered grasping onto that as though it was a lifeline.

Loghain swallowed painfully; any spy worth a damn would know of the runestones and he could not take the risk that they would be the very thing that would give them away. "It would be inappropriate to take the runestone with you." He felt himself shatter at Jayden's devastated look. "Rendon will be leaving the day after tomorrow; you will be travelling with him."

The chasm Jayden had been standing on the brink of suddenly engulfed him and he stared at his father in shock. An icy pain settled in his heart and the realisation of why he was really leaving hit him full force. He felt as though he was choking; the helplessness of his situation washing over him. "This is a punishment isn't it?" Jayden met his father's startled gaze; his voice shaking slightly. "Sending me away is to punish me because you blame me for mom dying." His shoulders slumped; any fight within him extinguished. "I blame me too."

Loghain felt as though his own sword had been driven through his heart; he clutched his chest struggling to breath. "How can you think I would blame you?" Loghain gasped out.

"Then why are you sending me away?"

Loghain buried his face in his son's hair and held him tightly. "Jayden you are not to blame. I promise you I don't blame you and you should never blame yourself. Forgive me I should have begun with the explanation; but I … I cannot bear to burden you with this."

"Dad you're scaring me." Jayden whispered softly.

Loghain closed his eyes momentarily and took a steadying breath before he explained about the threat he had received. "Hate me if you must; but please understand I am sending you away to protect you because I love you, not because I blame you for what happened to your mom." Loghain gently cupped his cheek; his voice breaking as he shuddered. "I almost lost you once ..."

Jayden's eyes gleamed with fierce determination. "I'm not running. I can fight now and I have Rumold and Tolband. Let them come I'm not afraid."

Loghain gently gripped Jayden's arms. "Never have I met a braver boy than you; but now is the time to be brave in a different way."

"Dad there will always be Orlesians which means there will always be threats. If you send me away now I will never come home."

"Yes you will." Loghain stated fiercely pulling him into a tight hug. "Yes you will."

Jayden buried his face against his father's shoulder. "Don't send me away dad please."

Loghain forced himself to be firm. "What is the most important part of being a Teyrn?"

Jayden looked up choking back his tears. "To put others before yourself. To make sure your people are protected."

"If this threat becomes a reality others might be hurt." Loghain stated softly. "Your sister, your friends."

Jayden lowered his eyes and pressed against his father; clutching him, afraid it would be the last time he would be held by him. "Dad I don't like this plan at all."

Loghain snorted and shook his head. "If there was another way I would take it."

"But how will I be any safer in the Free Marches?"

"I need you to trust me; can you do that?"

Jayden pulled the pain deep inside and moved back to his father hugging him as tightly as he could. "Yes." Jayden shivered; having no option but to accept what was happening. "If we are leaving before dawn the day after tomorrow then that means I only have one day to say goodbye to everyone."

Loghain sighed softly. "I'm sorry Jayden I know this is hard."

"I … I won't even get to see Ali; or Cailan, or Ell and Aedan before I go." His voice trembled painfully. "This isn't fair dad."

"None of this is fair Jayden." Loghain sat holding his son as the silence expanded between them. He glanced at the book Jayden was reading; an old favourite filled with tales of dragons. He settled himself on the bed relieved as Jayden tucked against him. "My father once told me a tale about dragons, would you like to hear it?"

Jayden nodded and nestled against his father; clutching onto this moment as though he could make time halt for a short while at least.

xXx

Breakfast was a quiet affair; Jayden pushed his porridge around the bowl and then gave up the pretext. He glanced up realising his father; grandfather and sister were watching him. He swallowed painfully. "I'm going to miss you all so much." He felt tears spill as Anora moved from her seat and hugged him.

Anora blinked back her own tears at his obvious distress longing to tell him he would not be in the Free Marches for long. "You will make us proud I know you will."

Sighing Jayden worried at his lip wondering where this current threat came from. "One day when you're Queen you will probably have to meet the Empress."

"It is possible; I shall have to remind myself that she wants peace and this is not her doing. However if I ever found out it was; she might find a little something extra in her tea."

Jayden's eyes widened before he smiled. "You've been spending too much time with Lady Oriana."

Anora chuckled softly. "Don't forget I have a bard as a handmaiden brother."

"I'll miss our Orlesian lessons."

"Dad will deal with this and then you can come home and continue your studies in Ferelden." Anora planted a kiss on the top of his head and returned to her seat, smiling as her grandfather gently squeezed her hand.

"I'm really not hungry; can I be excused I have lots to do before tomorrow."

"Save some time for us." Aelfraud stated gently.

Jayden moved to his grandfather hugging him. "I'll see everyone else this morning and then all of the rest of my time will be with you and Anora and dad."

Aelfraud smiled. "Go on then and hurry back."

"Take the golems with you." Loghain demanded as he returned his sons hug,

"I always do." Jayden soothed, hurrying from the room.

Loghain noticed Aelfraud's worried look. "The moment he leaves the estate Cauthrien and Gawain will follow him; unseen of course."

Aelfraud relaxed slightly; but shivered and allowed Anora to take him back to his room. He was almost glad Tolman was spending the week with his family; his sister having had her second child, he did not want him to be caught up in the mess.

xXx

Erlina rose as Jayden approached her with obvious purpose. "My Lord."

"I was hoping I could speak to you."

"Of course."

"You know of the threat."

"I do my Lord."

"I know dad thinks I'm the focus of the threat; but that doesn't mean they won't come after my sister."

"I will protect Lady Anora with my life."

"I know you will; which is why I'm worried about you too."

Erlina gave him a startled look. "You are concerned for my safety? I am a former slave; no one outside of your family and Mother Dorothea and Mother Sarah know who I am. There would be little reason to harm a handmaiden."

"Still, please be careful Erlina."

"For your sister's sake … of course." She was startled when Jayden clasped her hand.

"For your own. You risked yourself coming to help us. You risk yourself to stay. Just be careful."

Erlina hesitated a moment surprised by his sincerity and then nodded. "I will my Lord and … and thank you for your concern."

"Don't look so shocked." Jayden stated softly. "I don't hate all Orlesians."

A slight smile tugged at Erlina's lips. "Glad I am to hear it."

xXx

Simon joined Jayden and they sat on the wall; gazing out from the estate. "I got your note and came straight over. I know you said you would come to me; but I figured you would be really busy today. I … so you're going to be a page then." He noted Jayden's slight nod. He had imagined this would happen one day, but the timing seemed almost cruel. He wasn't at all sure what to say. He imagined how he would feel if his mother had died and then he was sent from home, it chilled him to the bone. "I … I am to join the Templars this summer." He worried at his lip and gave a weak smile as he realised Jayden was watching him. "I feel better about it after having spoken to Ser Dominic and Ser Cullen when they were here."

Jayden bit his lip realising that they were on the brink of everything changing for them both. "You will make a fine Templar."

They spoke for another hour before Simon reluctantly knew he had to leave; Jayden would have much to do if he was leaving at dawn the next day. "Ser Simon and Ser Jayden; it has a nice sound to it."

Jayden forced a smile. "I hope I see you again one day Simon; you're a good friend."

Swallowing the lump in his throat Simon leaned over and clasped Jayden's arm. "Good luck my friend."

Jayden gripped his arm tightly. "Be safe." He walked Simon to the gate and noticed Marcus, Gawain and Cauthrien talking quietly. They had been informed of the threat, though they were sworn to secrecy as to the nature of why he was leaving. He approached them, swallowing the thick lump in his throat as all three saluted him. "I wanted to speak to you now while I have the chance in case there isn't time later." He hesitated; everything he wanted to say not seeming nearly enough. He moved to Gawain. "You really did help me find myself again after the ship." He stated softly. "I can't ever thank you enough for everything you've taught me."

Gawain bit his lip swallowing painfully. "It has been an honour. Mind everything you've learned and stay out of trouble!"

Jayden nodded. "That's the plan." He turned to Marcus. "We are lucky to have a Guard Captain as loyal, brave and dedicated as you. Keep Gwaren safe."

"Of course my Lord. Just … just make sure you remember your training."

Jayden allowed a slight smile before he turned to Cauthrien. "You saved my dad. You are one of the bravest people I know." He hugged her gently. "Watch over my dad Cauthrien, keep him safe please."

Cauthrien nodded. "You have my word."

"I'll miss you all." Jayden worried at his lip. "Captain Marcus there isn't time to see everyone, will you let the rest of the guards know I say thank you and I am proud to know them all?"

"I will my Lord."

Jayden sighed and nodded. "Thank you Captain." He moved off in the direction of the main door where Rumold and Tolband were stood. He signalled to them and they followed him to a sheltered corner of the grounds. "I have to go away for a while. Maybe a long time; I … I don't know." He looked solemnly at both golems. "I have a request."

The golems remained silent as they watched him.

Jayden swallowed the lump in his throat. "I want you to protect my sister and grandpa, dad too while he's here. I've hidden the control rod so no-one can order you; but please protect them so I don't have to worry while I'm away. If ... if you get the chance maybe you could check in on Lyra, Zef and Rath too."

"It will be as you ask." Tolband stated solemnly."

Jayden flung himself at them not caring that he was cuddling cold stone. "I'm going to miss you both so much.

Rumold glanced down. "I ask to remain at your side."

Jayden's eyes widened feeling love and gratitude swell in his chest. "I wish you could but you can't. This is … I have to do this on my own." Jayden never imagined stone could look so dejected. "I will come back I promise; even if it's years from now I will come back." He smiled as both golems patted his back, he knew he would probably be bruised but he didn't care. "We should have a secret word so you know it's me when I return, I might look very different depending on how old I am."

"Amgeforn" Rumold stated softly.

"What does it mean?"

Rumold placed a hand on Jayden's shoulder. "Sacrifice."

Jayden closed his eyes and clung to the golems; feeling the hum of their enchantments ripple against his skin and allowed himself the belief that with Erlina, the golems and the guards, his family would be safe.

Serin glanced up from his desk and stood. "Young Jayden; an unexpected pleasure to be sure." He frowned slightly. "All is well with your grandfather I trust."

"At the moment; but Grandpa has been struggling. He pretends he is fine but …"

"And you wish me to be more mindful of his state of health?"

"If you would; he often says he is well when he isn't. I know he doesn't want to worry us; but he tells you the truth doesn't he?"

"You can rest assured I will continue to do my very best to ensure your grandfather's health." He smiled. "Tolman and I have a system worked out; your grandfather can't fool us, even if he wanted to. Jayden if I may ask why come now?"

"I leave tomorrow." He quickly steeled the tremble to his voice. "I just … I know Tolman looks after him really well I just wanted to make sure …" Jayden swallowed painfully and gazed at the healer. "I don't want him to die while I'm gone." He blurted out.

Serin gently gripped his shoulder. "While we never know when the Maker will call us home you have my word your grandfather will receive the best of care."

Jayden gave a relieved smile. "Thank you Master Serin."

Serin watched as Jayden left making a note to see Aelfraud the following afternoon; belatedly wondering where the boy was going and how long he would be gone.

Stepping into Mistress Marsden's shop Jayden ran his fingers over the material and glanced up as she slowly approached. He hadn't seen her since the funeral and she had aged in that short time.

"I wondered if I would ever see you again young man." Her voice quivered.

"I'm sorry I … I should have come sooner."

"Not to worry lad, I blame me too."

Jayden stared wide eyed as she moved to her seat by the counter, settling herself with a sigh. He moved swiftly gently clasping her hands. "You are not to blame."

"Oh lad … I pride myself on my ability to see the truth of people. I knew something wasn't quite right with that … that woman, even your mom felt something though she just put it down to her being from Redcliffe given her issues with the Arlessa. I should have kept a better watch."

Jayden shook his head. "She was very clever. You mustn't blame yourself, promise me you won't. Mom would be so upset if she knew you were."

"The old should never outlive the young." Marsden mumbled; she sighed and patted his hand. "So what can I do for you?"

"I came to tell you something. I'm going to page with a noble family in the Free Marches. I leave tomorrow." He shivered at the shock on her face. "It ... it will be a good opportunity for me."

Maker save us what is the Teryn thinking! "I have something for you then." She got to her feet wincing in discomfort and pulled a parcel from beneath the shelf. "Your mom asked me to make this before she … before she returned to the Maker."

Jayden gazed at the coat; it was a patchwork of greens that melted seamlessly into each other. The material was smooth to the touch. There was a hood and deep pockets on the inside. He was surprised when he tried it on to find it far too big for him.

"It was for your next name-day; you'll grow into it and best take it with you so you get the use of it. There is a hidden layer of armour within the lining, just in case you find yourself fighting spiders again."

"It's beautiful, thank you."

"Better take this too." She handed him a belt with various pouches and loops. "You tend to carry that much with you these days better have somewhere to put everything."

Jayden wrapped his arms around her and gently kissed her cheek. "Thank you."

"Your mom was so proud of you and so am I. You show those Marchers true Ferelden spirit!" When Jayden left she closed the shop and retired to her bed; her body aching, her heart tight with grief. I've done what I can for him Celia. Just you keep an eye on that boy; he'd find trouble in an empty warehouse.

xXx

Kneeling at his mother's tree; Jayden placed the small bunch of roses at its base. "I miss you mom. I can't believe this is really happening; but just because I don't visit the tree doesn't mean I will forget you. I will think of you every day I promise." He turned sharply as he heard someone approach; his heart leaping as he saw Rathnal, Zef and Lyra, the Alienage had been his next stop.

Zef eased forward. "We've been looking for you. We um … we heard something … from Simon. We saw him on the way here." He glanced to Lyra anxiously. "Is it true you're going to page with another noble family and that ... that you're leaving tomorrow?"

Jayden winced. "I'm sorry I was coming to see you; I should have come to you first it's just I ..." He sighed at their anxious expressions. "It's true."

"How long have you known?" Rathnal demanded; hurt clear in his voice.

"Since last night. I … I thought nothing could be worse than losing my mom; but I was wrong. Leaving everything is worse." He felt desperation claw at him. "Promise me no matter how long I'm gone we will still be friends."

Rathnal's momentary anger vanished and he moved to his friend and pulled him into a tight embrace. "We will always be friends Jay; no matter where you are, I swear."

Zef glanced to his sister; and as Rathnal released Jayden he gripped his arm and pulled him tight to him. "Wyverns forever Jay remember? That won't ever change."

Jayden finally met Lyra's gaze his soul aching.

"But it's so soon after …" Lyra bit her lip at his anguished expression.

"It's my duty." His whispered his voice breaking.

The four sank onto the bench not quite knowing what to say, Lyra's hand finding its way into Jayden's. These were their last moments together for Maker knew how long and it was filled with silence.

Rathnal finally shook his head. "We knew this would happen with you wanting to be a knight; but … but the Free Marches! I mean why can't you page with a Knight in Gwaren; or page for Teyrn Cousland; or join Ali in Rainesfere ..."

"I wish I could." Jayden stated softly.

Zef licked his lips nervously. "Well if you're coming back a Knight I better knuckle down in training if I'm going to fight by your side as a Night Elf."

Jayden couldn't help the smile. "It would be my honour."

Zef grinned. "Mine too."

They spoke softly; talking of their hopes and dreams for the future, knowing time was against them.

Lyra felt anger burn in her heart towards the Teyrn thinking him heartless and cruel. She moved closer to Jayden; her voice a whisper. "I'll miss you."

Jayden held her close as she rested her cheek against his shoulder. "I'll miss you too." He closed his eyes breathing in the scent of her hair; feeling the pain of his heart expand at the thought of not seeing her for Maker knew how long. Jayden felt the world fall away until only Lyra existed; her eyes wet with tears from pain he was causing. He gently cupped her cheek; his fingers drifting into copper strands, trembling at the silky texture against his skin, feeling the tremble of her hands pressed against his chest. He took off the wolf pendant his grandfather had given him and carefully placed it around Lyra's neck before he pressed his forehead to hers his eyes closing. "You once told me you wished I was elven." He whispered. "I wish that too."

Lyra felt her breath catch in her throat. She gazed at Jayden and found it hard to remember he was younger than her by nearly two years. Despite his grief she felt a strength from him she wanted to sink into. The metal was cool and smooth against her skin; yet it burned with a promise that somehow they would have a life together. Wrapping her arms around his neck she buried her face in his hair. "I'll be right here waiting for you to come home." She felt his arms tighten around her waist; realising they were both trembling. After what seemed an eternity they finally moved back from each other.

Goodbye seemed too final and none of them could bring themselves to say it.

Jayden glanced to Rathnal and Zef who moved to Lyra's side, their faces pale. "I'll miss you all." He forced himself to walk away, it was one of the hardest things he had ever had to do.

Lyra sank to the ground when he had gone; her body shuddering as Rathanl and Zef held her between them. She closed her eyes and buried her face in Zef's tunic, muffling her sobs.

xXx

After lunch Anora sat on the sofa next to Aelfraud; Jayden settling between them, Loghain sinking into a comfortable chair. The family remained silent; all the things that should be said as yet unspoken.

Aelfraud gently ran his fingers through Jayden's hair. His grandson hadn't spoken since he had returned to the estate; he was pale and his eyes had been bloodshot. He suspected his goodbye with Lyra in particular had been difficult. He glanced to Anora who was looking at her brother as though committing his features to memory. He reached out and squeezed her hand.

Anora sighed and gently nudged her brother. "Do you have everything you need?"

"I think so." Jayden sighed and tucked his hair behind his ears. "Well I guess I get to see at least some of the Free Marches; I wonder if it is very different to what I've read."

Aelfraud leaned over and grasped something from beneath the sofa placing the empty leather bound journal into his hand. "Perhaps you can put all your observations in this and show us when you come home."

Jayden carefully clasped the journal to his chest. "Thank you grandpa. I'll write everything down I promise."

xXx

The day passed too quickly for Jayden; the minutes slipping through his fingers as he sought to keep hold of each one. He had tried to get Anora to argue on his behalf to let him stay; but she was as adamant as his father and he had eventually fallen silent. As evening fell he tucked himself against his father trying not to fall asleep.

"You should go to bed." Loghain stated softly.

Jayden smiled; his father didn't want him to go to his bed any more than he did. "In a little while." He promised.

Smiling; Loghain tugged him a little closer. All these months he had kept his distance and now; he was trying to pour all of those missed hugs into this one moment. "I'll bring you home soon; I promise."

With a soft sigh Jayden found himself unable to stop his eyes from closing. He woke with a start finding himself in his bed the full moon lighting his room. He leapt from the bed and lit the candles placing them on his small desk and pulled out parchment. He had a few hours before dawn; but he would have to be swift.

xXx

Jayden felt a hand on his shoulder and blinked sleepily realising he had fallen asleep at his desk. He glanced to Anora and sat up wincing at the ache in his neck.

"Jayden have you been here all night?"

"I must have fallen asleep, at least I finished them."

Anora glanced to the letters neatly piled and sealed. "You've been busy."

"I can't just leave and not tell my friends. They are for Ali, Aedan and Ellowyn. There's one for Cailan too. Could you send them please?"

"Of course I will." Anora worried at her lip. "I wondered ... I hoped when you see Nate you could give him this."

Jayden took the letter and hid it carefully in his pack. He sighed; Anora was as pale as he was, her eyes bloodshot with tears, dark circles beneath them. Things had changed so quickly he wasn't sure either of them had really processed that he was actually going to leave. He felt tears well, but he took a steadying breath. "This is really happening."

Anora moved to her brother and pulled him into her arms. "I love you brother."

"Love you to Anora." He held onto her never wanting to let go. "I'll miss you."

Anora glanced up as Aelfraud entered the room and pressed a kiss to her brother's forehead. "I will see you downstairs."

Jayden moved to his grandfather as Anora left the room and hugged him gently. "When you visit mom's tree will you tell her I love her?" He whispered softly.

Aelfraud swallowed the lump in his throat. "She will hear you wherever you are my dear boy."

"I know grandpa I just … please."

"Of course." He held his grandson tightly. "How are you doing?" Aelfraud asked his voice hoarse and choked.

"I don't know grandpa."

Aelfraud gently wrapped his arm around him and smiled as Jayden leaned against him. "Do you know what makes me proudest?"

Jayden shrugged slightly.

"Your courage."

"Promise me you won't die while I'm gone."

Aelfraud closed his eyes and hugged him tightly. "Jayden we both know that is a promise I cannot make."

Jayden sighed. "Watch over Anora grandpa; she's alone too often."

Aelfraud hugged him tighter. "Don't you worry about us my boy." He placed a pouch into Jayden's hand. "Take this, just in case."

Jayden's eyes widened as he saw the coins inside. "Grandpa!" He gasped.

"Hush. Don't show anyone and don't tell anyone. Keep it secret and safe. It is for emergencies only. If you don't use it you can give it back to me when you come home."

Jayden hugged him as tightly as he dared. "Don't forget about me Grandpa."

Aelfraud choked back the pain and held his grandson tightly. "Never."

Jayden carefully rolled up his map of Ferelden and tucked it and the pouch into the pack, if nothing else he would be able to see his country on the parchment. Steadying his grandfather as they walked down the stairs; he straightened his back and buried his pain and fear deep within him as his father moved over to him as they entered the Great Hall.

Loghain pulled his son into his arms, burying his face in his hair. "My brave boy." He whispered.

Jayden closed his eyes soaking up the warmth of his embrace. There was so much he wanted to say and yet he could say none of it; knowing his words would drown in the tears desperate to fall. When his father let him go he felt as though he was falling; everything he had known, everything he loved pulled away from him.

Rendon watched the family hug each other tightly. I will do what needs to be done swiftly Jayden, you will be back with your family soon I swear it. This will make you stronger; a true leader. "Well Jayden are you ready?"

Anora glanced to the Arl startled to see a brief flash of what appeared to be guilt. It was gone so quickly she shook her head believing herself mistaken.

Jayden glanced to Arl Howe and took a steadying breath. No! I will never be ready to leave my family and my friends and my home. "Yes I'm ready."

Rendon smiled. "Come then."

The family climbed into the carriage and remained in silence on the short trip to the dock, words seemed somehow too painful.

There were few people on the dock as early as it was and Jayden's departure was managed with discretion. He watched as his family became smaller; the memory of their final embrace surrounding him like a cloak. He turned as he felt the Arl's hand on his shoulder and finally followed him to his cabin, giving a last lingering look to the shores of Gwaren.

xXx

Anora sat on the edge of her brother's bed and gazed around his room. She moved over to the shelves her fingertips drifting over the carving of his ship; the dragon and the raven before she was distracted by a glimmer of sunlight on the trunk at the foot of his bed. She knelt on the floor and carefully opened the trunk; inwardly berating herself for intruding on his private things, but compelled to do so all the same. Inside was the jewellery box she had given him to keep all his treasures in, little trinkets he had picked up in his many adventures. Her hands shaking she gently picked up the cloth mabari that was lying beside it. She rose and curled up on Jayden's bed; bringing the toy to her chest she buried her face against the material and wept.

xXx

Aelfraud sat next to Celia's tree grateful for the warmth of the sunlight flooding the small grove. He had been startled when Tolband had accompanied him, the golem informing him that had had been assigned to watch over him. "My grandson's orders I assume."

"Lord Jayden's request." Tolband stated formally.

Aelfraud smiled. "Of course." He turned his attention back to the tree and sighed. Watch over him Celia, for all our sakes. He sat until he felt himself begin to doze. With a sigh he rose. "Come then Tolband; forgive an old man for leaning on you, but I doubt I will make it back otherwise."

xXx

Loghain was barely aware of the day passing; finding himself sitting at his desk with a brandy as evening arrived, his eyes fixed on the floor lost in the past when Jayden was five and surrounded by maps, his bright young voice telling him that he would protect him from the Orlesians. He gazed at the runestone; it's twin in Howe's possession, with strict instructions it was to remain hidden. He hadn't told Jayden and guilt squirmed in his gut; but should something happen he couldn't wait for a messenger to reach him. He sighed; he would ask his son's forgiveness when this was over. He set the glass on the desk and poured another. "Celia please let me be taking the right course of action." He downed the drink and headed to the guarded room with the runestone whose twin was in Denerim. Despite Rendon's fears he could not keep this from Maric. When he heard Maric's voice the seed of paranoia Rendon had planted blossomed deep in his chest. He was aware Maric was intending to look over the newest outpost at Ostagar, knowing the King was using it as an excuse to be close enough to warrant a visit. "I thought I might join you at Ostagar; blow away the cobwebs."

Maric caught the slight tone in his voice. "I was considering leaving tomorrow. I am hoping for a cloudless sky." He stated casually.

"I heard there would be storms." Loghain stated evenly.

Maric rubbed his forehead; wondering what trouble Loghain was alluding too; quickly arranging a date to meet his friend.

Loghain returned to his study and poured himself another brandy; staring into the flames, nursing his glass, the alcohol still untouched as dawn light crept into the room.
