Usagi and Mamoru
Signs of Affection
100 Drabbles
53. Giddy
She was only gone for three days. There had certainly been longer periods when he had not seen her. He'd kept himself very busy between studying for his classes and avoiding Rei like the plague. He wasn't sure how to gently inform her that going on another date was absolutely and without a doubt not a possibility.
Mamoru had never considered himself a cowardly man and in fact most people thought him cold and uncaring of the feelings of others. Indeed, he'd had no trouble turning down many, many women in the past. And yet of late he found himself annoyingly concerned about the emotions of others. Another side effect of spending so much time with Usagi, he acknowledged.
Speaking of whom, his worries about Rei were pushed to the side when Usagi entered the arcade. Something was wrong. Mamoru's blood ran cold.
She glanced at the usual booth and, seeing that her friends were not present, turned to go. She froze when she heard Motoki call her over, complaining that it had been so long since he'd gotten to talk to his favorite customer. But when she turned back to them she was smiling brightly and skipped over to have a little chat with the shopkeeper.
Everything seemed normal, on the surface. He was certain Motoki didn't notice anything amiss in her demeanor. Her hands didn't clench. Her smile didn't falter. Her eyes bore no hint of unshed tear. Before she left, she even turned and gave Mamoru a too-giddy smile, but he knew. She was broken.
Cold blue eyes stared into his coffee cup, his muscles tight with rage. He'd hurt her. He'd hurt her and broken her and that girl who had just smiled at him was just a ghost of the soul she should have been. His hands clenched, a fraction from shattering the mug.
He didn't know who this weapon-giving mystery man was that had squandered Usako's love, but Mamoru resolved then and there to find him and kick. His. Ass.

Author's Note: Oh my, did I use a naughty word? It couldn't be helped.
And don't say I didn't warn you that when Mamoru makes mistakes, he makes them big.
