The Avengers Part 7
The road going into the city was littered with deserted cars and people running away on foot. There was certainly enough room for the two of us to make our way into the city, the further we went, the louder the sounds of fighting and screaming got.
"How do we know where they are?" Bruce shouted in my ear.
"Easy," I grinned, seeing lightning strike up ahead. "Follow the lightning."
When we came around the corner, there stood most of the Avengers already battle worn. They turned around when they heard us coming and I stopped the bike.
"So, this seems horrible," Bruce frowned.
"I've seen worse," Black Widow answered back.
"Sorry," Bruce apologised.
I walked over to Captain America and looked up into the sky. "Sorry, couldn't call, my com's out. What about the Tesseract?"
"Stark Tower," Captain America replied. He touched his helmet, "Stark? We got them. Just like you said."
A small gasp escaped me when we all saw what came out of the portal next. "Holy crap," I whispered. "Those Leviathan's are huge."
"Doctor Banner, now might be a really good time for you to get angry," Captain America suggested.
Bruce studied the leviathan and turned back to Captain America. "That's my secret, Captain. I'm always angry."
I watched Bruce as his body shape started to changed, first his skin and then he just started to grow up and out. The Hulk raised his fist and punched the leviathan right in the face. The creature's body continued to go forward, exposing its underbelly.
Seconds later there was a large explosion and parts of the leviathan went everywhere.
Each of us looked up into the sky and seemingly froze.
"Call it, Cap," Iron Man urged Captain America when he landed.
The Captain looked around and cleared his throat. "Alright, listen up. Until we can close that portal up there, we're gonna use containment. Barton, I want you on that roof, eyes on everything. Call out patterns and strays. Stark, you got the perimeter. Anything gets more than three blocks, you turn it back or you turn it to ash."
"Wanna give me a lift?" Hawkeye asked Iron Man.
"Right," Iron Man answered, looping his arms underneath Hawkeye's. "Better clench up, Legolas," he warned him when they left the ground.
"Thor, you've gotta try and bottle neck that portal," Captain America continued. "Slow them down. You've got the lightning. Light the bastards up." He looked at Black Widow. "You and me, we stay here on the ground, keep the fighting here. Astrid, I want you to provide civilian cover. The Chitauri will be focused on us but whatever slips through us will try and kill the civilians."
I gave him a mock salute before I ran off to find the nearest police patrol.
As I ran past a café, someone wolf whistled, making me come to a halt. A young man was waving me into the café where inside there were a group of other people. "You're crazy running around out there with those things out there, lady."
I brushed myself off and looked around the café. There were the elderly, couples, young men and women, and children. "Hang on a moment," I told him, throwing a burst of electricity out into the streets, hitting a small group of Chitauri soldiers, frying them. "Now what were you saying about being out there with them?"
The all stared at me.
"Who the bloody hell are you?" an elderly man asked me. "You're not one of those lot are you?"
A Chitauri soldier landed right on the ground outside the door. I ducked and thrust my whole body upwards, knocking it off its feet before finishing it with its own rifle. "Do I look like one of them?" I asked him, tossing the weapon over to the young man who had pulled me in here. "What's your name?" I asked him.
"Jaxon," he answered. "Jaxon Matthews."
"Well, Jaxon, I'm Special Agent Ellis with SHIELD," I answered. "You work here?"
He nodded.
"Back alley exits?" I asked, keeping an eye out on the streets.
"Just one, down through the basement," he answered.
"All right," I nodded. "Go out, check to see if the alley is clear."
"We're not going out there!"
"We're target practice in here!"
"That agent can protect us!"
"My focus is getting civilians out of the war zone," I shouted over the top of them. "Jaxon here will get you out. I need to find other civilians and get them out."
"Go on, Special Agent," Jaxon nodded.
"Good kid," I grinned. "Take them out until you find the police. You're in charge. Weapon fires like a normal rifle, allow for some kickback," I advised before I ducked out the door to search for anyone else hiding.
I continued searching, finding several small groups of hiding civilians and helping out the police who were struggling to save the civilians from the Chitauri. Time seemed to go by fast and slow all at the same time. Iron Man and Hawkeye were doing a fantastic job keeping the aliens confined to six city blocks, occasionally I could see a green blur jumping around-Bruce wasn't such a bad guy after all.
I can sense the Tesseract.
"Where?" I asked, stopping dead in my tracks down the middle of a deserted alley way.
Stark Tower.
I shrugged. Loki was like Tony, a full scale diva. I rubbed my hands together and started generating sparks around me to give me enough lift to Stark Tower. I landed on the roof roughly around the same time as Black Widow did.
My eyes fell upon the Tesseract but instead of running to it, I rushed over to Erik who was lying uneasily on the ground, sporting a head wound. "Doctor Selvig?" I shouted, over the sounds of battle.
He blinked when he saw me. "Agent Ellis?"
"On your feet, old man," I urged him. "Gotta help us stop this thing."
"You're back!" he muttered.
"Erik, how can you stop this?" I questioned.
"Loki's sceptre," he answered, still uneasy. "The Tesseract can't fight, you can't protect against yourself."
"You cleaver bastard," I grinned. "It should close the portal!"
He nodded. "I'm looking right at it."
I glanced over the edge of the building and saw it lying there. "Nat, can you handle this?" I asked her.
She nodded. "Go on."
"Tell them you can close it," I ordered her.
Black Widow had the only working Com out of the two of us. I ran over the edge of the building and landed on the balcony of Stark Tower. There were signs of battle all over, the most obvious was Loki lying stunned on the ground. I grabbed the sceptre and sent it up to Black Widow before kneeling down beside Loki. "Someone beat the shit out of you."
Loki's eyes flickered over to a shape behind me.
I turned around and found the Hulk standing behind me. "You could have at least not ruined Tony's floor, Bruce," I grinned.
"Mum?" came a quiet voice.
I turned around and grinned when I saw him standing there with Christine. "Jimmy!" I shouted. I ran over to him and pulled him in for a hug. I ignored the fact that he called me mum, we'd talk about that later.
"Mum, what's going on?" he asked me.
"Where've you been hiding?" I asked him.
"My room," Jimmy answered. "I heard voices, came out to see what was going on."
"Go back and stay there," I warned him. "I'll explain everything once we close that portal." I hugged him again and ushered him and Christine back down the hallway. I went back over to the Hulk and lightly punched him in the arm. "Come on, dude. We gotta finish this."
I sat down on the ground and threw every ounce of concentration I had into erecting a shield large enough to cover the city blocks. My concentration was completely blown when something flew straight up the side of the tower.
That familiar gold and red flash was Tony.
Nat, what's he doing? I asked her.
She jumped when I touched her mind but answered straight back. They were gonna nuke the city…Tony's taking it to them.
No sooner than Black Widow had explained it to me was there a large explosion overhead.
SHUT IT NAT! I yelled all the while watching for Tony.
As the portal started to shut, Tony's limp form fell through the sky, rapidly gaining speed as he plummeted towards the earth. I took a couple steps backwards but a green shape ran passed me, jumping off the building straight towards Tony.
The Hulk caught him and slammed into a building before crashing to the ground.
I gave a sigh of relief before turning back to Loki. She had to give it to the Hulk, he'd fought both her and Thor but hadn't made as much damage to them as he to Loki. I knelt down and placed my hand against his head.
"What are you doing?" Loki demanded to know.
"Reading your mind," I answered back simply as I started to pull at the information in his head. I pulled back the moment I had a name.
A name I hadn't heard I years.
Thanos…
"Oh this is bad," I whispered.
