"Arthur wishes to spend the day with me?" Gwen asked later.
Merlin and I separated, but then reconvened when Merlin told me that Arthur wished to spend the day with Gwen, as like a date. We had to discuss it first, but we agreed if we could keep it a secret, then there was no problem with them going out. Besides, we couldn't exactly keep them apart.
Merlin and I looked at each other in confusion. "I thought you'd be happy," Merlin said.
"It isn't that simple. If anyone were to find out...What if someone sees us?" Gwen asked.
"I'll take you to meet him outside the city. Arthur's willing to take the risk...if you are," Merlin explained.
Gwen paused, contemplating the decision.
"Should we tell him that you won't meet him?" I asked her.
"No," She said quickly.
Merlin stepped away from me and put his hands on Gwen's shoulders. "You forget, he's Prince Arthur, and that he can be a spoiled, arrogant brat," Merlin started.
Gwen chuckled a little. "Merlin."
Merlin and I eventually laughed too. "Sorry," He said. "You like him."
Gwen nodded. "Yes."
"He likes you," I continued.
Gwen nodded again, biting her lip a little. "Mm-hmm."
"Isn't that all that really matters?" Merlin finished.
I put my hand on Gwen's back as I smiled at her, and she smiled back at me. "I suppose it is."
Merlin and I grinned as we looked at each other. "Then I will come back in the morning," Merlin said.
I nodded at Gwen. "I'll come by earlier and help you get ready. Don't worry about your duties, you are completely dismissed."
"Thank you, my Lady," Gwen said to me, and I reached over and gave her a hug before I took Merlin's hand and the two of us left Gwen's house.
"So Gwen has been asked to be relieved of her duties tomorrow," Morgana said later that night as we had a cup of tea before bed, like we always did.
"Has she now?" I asked, lifting my cup to my lips to hide my snarl at Morgana.
She grinned widely and nodded her head. "Everything is going exactly as planned. By the end of tomorrow, Guinevere and Arthur's relationship will be a thing of the past."
"I can't wait," I mumbled as I crossed my fingers under the table.
"You should be careful," I advised Gwen the next day as I finished doing her hair in her home.
She frowned in the mirror. "Why?"
"Because...anyone can come around in the middle of the forest," I told her. I grabbed her shoulders and turned her around. "Just be careful, promise?"
She nodded, but she had a confused look on her face. "I promise."
Merlin showed up not long after, and we both escorted Gwen to her date spot in the middle of the forest. When we got there, we had to stifle laughs as we watched Arthur gaze into a silver platter to fix his hair and eyebrows.
"Shh," Merlin said to us before cupping his hands around his mouth. "Caw! Caw!"
Arthur immediately dropped the platter as he turned around, and we stifled our laughs again as we got to the stream that separated us from Arthur.
"Guinevere, you look..." Arthur stumbled over his words.
"I think he's trying to say you look nice," Merlin finished, which rose an awkward little chuckle out of Gwen.
"Thank you, Merlin. That'll be all," Arthur dismissed.
"Have fun, you two!" I teased as Merlin and I began stepping away from them. "And don't do anything I wouldn't do!"
The joke was lost on them as I rolled my eyes and muttered, "Never mind. Stupid medieval people" under my breath.
We were about halfway out of the forest when Merlin suddenly grabbed my hand and began leading me away from the castle. "But the castle's that way..." I said in confusion.
Merlin smiled nervously. "I just thought that if Arthur was giving me the day off by spending it with Gwen, you and I could spend some time together."
He took me over to a picnic spot that he must have set up before we got there. It wasn't as large and extravagant as the set up Arthur had for Gwen, but I loved it so much more.
"I know it's not much, but..." Merlin said, embarrassed.
I smiled at the picnic and turned around to look at Merlin. "It's perfect. I love it." I reached over and took his hand, giving it a tight squeeze. "And I love you." I stood on my tip toes and gave him a kiss, feeing his lips smile as I did so. I pulled back and tugged on his hand. "Now, come on!"
We went over to the picnic and sat down. We ate and we talked and we eventually dozed off for a bit. When we woke up, the sun was setting, and we made our way back to the castle.
When we did, we found out the worst. Uther and Morgana had just "happened" to come across Arthur and Gwen in the forest, and when Arthur revealed that he was in love with Gwen, Uther banished her from Camelot. Morgana went to talk to Arthur, but I opted to stay behind and go to Gwen to "make sure she actually left" but in actuality to see how she was doing.
Merlin and I watched warily as Gwen paced around her home as she packed up her things. "There is so much to do. I'll have to sell everything I can't take with me." She pointed at me. "And of course I need to find a new maid for you and Morgana."
"Gwen," I started.
"Do you know anyone suitable?" She asked Merlin as she passed him.
"Gwen, stop it," Merlin said, and Gwen finally stopped in front of her bed. "Where will you go?"
Guinevere finally slumped on to her bed and shook her head, holding back tears. "I don't know. I've spent my whole life in Camelot, it's all I know. Everything I care about is here. I have nothing else."
"We'll think of something," I told her. "I promise. You won't be leaving Camelot under my watch."
Honestly, I'd been letting Morgana do all the dirty work so that I would feel less guilty, but I realized too late what the effects of letting my evil half-sister doing all the dirty work actually was.
Morgana had only gone and planted a fake poultice under Arthur's pillow to make it seem like Gwen was using a spell on Arthur to make him in love with her.
Uther dragged Gwen out in front of the council as the guards threw her to her knees in front of Uther. He held the poultice out to her. "You recognize it?"
She gave it a strange look as she answered. "I've never seen it before in my life."
"Really?" Uther spat. "I believe you planted it in Arthur's Chambers to enchant him." Uther handed the poultice back to the guard.
"That's not true," Gwen insisted.
"Why else would Arthur fall in love with someone like you?" Uther sneered.
Without thinking, Gwen said, "I don't expect someone like you to understand that."
Uther lifted his hand and slapped Gwen across the face with the back of it, hard.
Morgana and I gasped, but mine was more genuine than hers. "My Lord! Gwen has always been a loyal and trusted servant!" Morgana protested.
"I have no doubt she's feigned loyalty while using her position to get close to my son," Uther guessed.
The doors suddenly burst open, and Arthur stormed inside, looking absolutely furious. "What is the meaning of this?!"
Uther held up the poultice. "This poultice was found under your pillow. Some kind of love charm. You are under its spell."
Arthur scoffed. "That's ridiculous."
"What would you know," Uther stated.
"Because I know how I feel," Arthur retorted. "I'm not enchanted!"
"So can you tell me how it came to be in your room?" Uther countered.
Arthur shrugged helplessly. "I don't know, but I don't believe Guinevere put it there."
"Until its spell is broken, I can't take anything you say as the truth," Uther informed him. "Her father consorted with sorcerers."
"My father was a good and innocent man and you executed him!" Gwen sobbed.
"So you would seek your revenge by enchanting my son?!" Uther bellowed.
"No!" Gwen insisted.
"My Lord, whatever this poultice is, I don't believe that Gwen is responsible for magic!" Gaius said.
"I don't care what you believe, Gaius," Uther shot down. "Arthur is under her spell. It's the only rational explanation for his behaviour!"
"Father, you have to see reason. Guinevere has done nothing wrong!" Arthur practically pleaded.
"She has been found guilty of using magic and enchantments," Uther declared. "She will be burnt at the stake."
"No," Arthur breathed, and I felt my insides crumbling at his words and at the look of horror on Gwen's face. I thought that we were just breaking them up, not having Gwen killed!
Arthur moved towards Uther, but Uther gestured to the guards. "Restrain him!"
They grabbed Arthur just as he bolted forward. "You can't do this!"
"My Lord! At least give Gwen a fair trial!" Gaius insisted.
"I have all the evidence I need," Uther dismissed.
"I'm begging you!" Arthur pleaded. His eyes glowed with an idea as he shouted, "W-we will leave Camelot and never return! Just- just let us go!" Finally, to everyone's surprise, he said, "I relinquish my entitlement to the throne!"
Whoa. I knew Arthur loved Gwen, but I didn't know he loved her that much. Enough to give up the throne of Camelot so that Morgana could take it?
Gwen must not have seen that coming either, because she gasped in surprise. I looked over at Merlin, who had the same look on his face as I was sure I had.
Uther's eyes widened in disbelief. "My son would never do that. It is proof beyond doubt that you are enchanted."
Arthur's breathing flared. "I will never forgive you for this," He told Uther.
"She will die. The enchantment will be broken," Uther said, as if he was talking to a child. "You'll see I was right. Take her away."
Uther turned around and left as Arthur shouted, "No! Guinevere!" He tried to break free of the guards as Gwen began to panic as another set of guards picked her up off of the floor.
"Arthur! No! Arthur, please...!" Gwen begged as the guards began dragging Gwen backwards toward the door. And I couldn't do anything but stand there, because if I did, then I would blow my cover with Morgana. I had never felt so disgusted with myself.
"No!" Arthur finally broke away from the guards. He ran to Gwen and grabbed her from the guards, kissing her for as long as he could until the other guards pulled him away. "I will always love you!" He breathed as Gwen was finally dragged out of the room and out of sight.
After pretending to celebrate with Morgana, I ran down to the palace kitchens and grabbed some food before running down to the dungeons. It took a little bit of convincing, but I finally managed to convince the guards to let me see Gwen. When I got to her cell, I had the guard open it for me. "Leave us," I told him, and he bowed before turning around and leaving.
"You must be starving," I told her as I sat the plate down.
"I can't even think of eating," Gwen said. "How is Arthur?"
I shook my head. "I haven't seen him." I grabbed her hands and squeezed them. "But I'm sure that he's trying his best to convince Uther that you're innocent. He-and I-won't stop until you've been released."
Gwen shook her head. "You and I both know that Uther will not change his mind." Gwen then took a deep breath, trying not to cry. "When I am gone, will you take care of him for me, Elizabeth?"
I immediately shook my head. "No, no, I won't, because you'll still be here to look after him. We're not giving up hope. There's still time."
"To do what?" Gwen asked.
"Merlin and I will figure out a plan," I told her. "We always do. We just need to figure out who really made the poultice." Even though I knew, I put my finger to my chin and wondered, "Do you have any idea who it could've been?"
Gwen gave me a dark look, and I pressed, "What?"
Gwen walked around me to check to see if there are any guards near, and then she turned around and faced me. "After I was sentenced to death, I was being led out. I looked back. I swear, Morgana was smiling." My heart dropped. Gwen figured it out. She'd figured it out. "You probably think I'm mad."
I shook my head. "No, I..." I heard footsteps, and I looked over my shoulder. I turned back to Gwen, trying to wrap it up. "I believe you. Truth be told, I've been beginning to think there's been something wrong with Morgana for a long time."
A guard opened the cell door as Gwen whispered, "I can no longer trust her. I've started to wonder if it wasn't a coincidence that Uther and Morgana found us in the woods."
I reached forward and gave Gwen the biggest hug I could until a guard was calling me to leave. "Merlin and I will figure something out," I whispered to her as I turned around and left.
"Morgana's done this," I told Gaius and Merlin after I met them in Gaius's chambers. I paced the floor, gnawing on my thumbnail. "I'm sure of it. Morgana and Morgause have gone too far this time."
"Morgana?" Gaius repeated. "Uther'll never believe that Morgana's responsible."
"Perhaps Arthur will talk him 'round," Merlin suggested.
"Uther thinks Arthur's enchanted," Gaius reminded us. "Anything that Arthur does is going to strengthen that belief. I fear that's not going to save Gwen."
I let out a tiny sob. "I knew," I said quietly. "I knew that Morgause and Morgana were planning against Gwen, but I still let Arthur and Gwen go off by themselves-" I cut myself off my covering my mouth to contain my sobs.
Merlin immediately got up off of the bench where he was sitting next to Gaius and wrapped me up tightly in a hug. "Hey, this isn't your fault," He told me as he kissed the crown of my head. "I knew too. You told me, and still I also let Arthur go. I helped him pack, even." He pulled back and wiped my tears. "We just need to come up with a plan. We're Merlin and Lizzie: we always come up with a plan. Crying's not gonna help, is it?" I shook my head, and he kissed my forehead. "Alright. Let's just come up with a plan, then."
He let me go as I wiped off my face. "If we can't expose the true sorcerer," Merlin started. "then we must invent one."
Gaius and I exchanged confused looks. "Oh?" Gaius pressed.
"What if a sorcerer was caught planting an identical poultice in Arthur's Chambers? Uther would've no choice but to release Gwen," Merlin continued.
"And do you know of a sorcerer who's stupid enough to get caught doing such a thing?" Gaius asked.
Merlin grinned. "Me!" And then he took off to his own chamber.
"What?" Gaius and I both said as we turned around and followed after the stupid warlock.
"So, if I disguise myself, it won't matter if I'm caught," He said once we got there. He had his magic book in his lap, and he was flipping through the pages. "I can use magic to escape, and then just change back into myself. They'll think that the sorcerer has just vanished into thin air."
"Well, no matter how you disguise yourself, I fear Arthur will recognise you," Gaius reminded him.
Merlin smirked mischievously. "Not if I'm eighty years old."
Gaius raised his eyebrows in surprise. "An aging spell? Merlin, aging spells are notoriously difficult and unpredictable. If the spell doesn't hold, you'll be exposed."
"If I don't do something, Gwen's going to die, and I'm not going to let that happen," Merlin said. "Can you make a poultice identical to the one found in Arthur's Chambers?"
"Well, I believe so," Gaius nodded.
Merlin nodded too. "Okay."
"What can I do?" I asked.
"Help me with the poultice," Gaius said as he turned around and walked back out of Merlin's chambers. As soon as Gaius was gone, I leaned forward and gave Merlin a quick kiss good luck before I turned around and followed Gaius.
I didn't know how time had passed as I helped Gaius. He was just tying the poultice when we heard footsteps, and Gaius and I both turned our heads to see an old man walking down the steps of Merlin's chambers. My jaw dropped as I caught sight of him-I knew it by his eyes. It was Merlin.
"You two know me better than anyone," Merlin croaked deeply. His voice was incredibly old. "Do you recognize me?"
"There's something of you in the eyes," Gaius said, voicing my tell out loud. "But perhaps that's just because I know it's you."
"I can't believe that one day I will actually look like this," Merlin said as he looked in the mirror. He looked over at me. "Will you still love me once I look like this?"
I pretended to wince. "Do you want me to lie to you?"
He rolled his eyes at me, but then groaned loudly. "Ah! I ache, all over."
"Ah. Well, now you know how I feel," Gaius told him as he went over and handed Merlin the poultice. "You'll be needing this."
"Be careful, Merlin," I advised him as he walked towards the door.
"I always am," He said, and with that, he was out the door.
There was a council meeting later that day, so I met up with Morgana before we went. We stayed close by each other in the council chamber, occasionally whispering comments to each other when the doors suddenly opened and Arthur walked in, Old Merlin being dragging behind him by guards.
"Father," Arthur called.
"Arthur." Uther nodded at Merlin. "Who is this?"
"He is the sorcerer," Arthur informed him as he handed the poultice Gaius and I made to Uther. "I found him placing this under my pillow."
"Is this true?" Uther asked.
"Yes," Merlin answered.
Morgana grabbed a hold of my hand and gave it a squeeze. I could see the confusion in her eyes that I tried to mirror as she whispered softly into my ear, "Who is that?!"
"What did you hope to achieve with this enchantment?" Arthur asked Old Merlin.
"If Arthur were to fall in love with a lowly serving girl, it would bring shame on Camelot," Old Merlin fibbed. We really should of thought up of a better plan before Merlin leaped into action.
"Have I wronged you in some way, old man?" Uther asked.
I knew Merlin was speaking from the heart when he ranted, "You have wronged so many people in so many ways. You're blinded by your hatred of magic. You have tortured and executed innocent people. You, Uther Pendragon, are a stupid, arrogant old tyrant!"
"You will hold your tongue!" Arthur demanded.
Merlin spun on Arthur. "And you! Oh, I have heard how you...mistreat your servants!"
...Oh dear God.
"They do everything for you, but do they ever get any thanks? No! You're a spoilt arrogant brat...!" Merlin shouted at him, safe behind someone else's face. "...with the brains of a donkey and the face-" He cut himself off as he hiccuped and coughed. "-of a toad."
I rolled my eyes discreetly at him.
"This serving girl..." Uther started. "She is your accomplice?"
Merlin shook his head. "I enchanted her too. The girl is entirely innocent."
"My Lord, he has confessed," Arthur said, and it was clear that even though he was confused about the whole situation, it looked like Gwen would be spared, and he was hopeful about it.
Uther was trying not to sulk, but he picked up the poultice as he said, "Release the girl. Tomorrow at dawn you will take your place on the pyre. Take him away."
Arthur and the guards escorted Merlin out of the room and to the dungeons. My heart had begun beating loudly when Uther said that Merlin was going to be taking Gwen's place on the pyre, so I pushed myself out of my seat as I ran to the door to stare after them in the corridor. Gaius and Morgana had joined me as we watched Merlin and the guards turn the corner.
"Do you know that man, Gaius?" Morgana asked him.
"I've never seen him before," Gaius expertly lied. He turned and looked at my sister. "Is there something troubling you, Morgana? I would've thought you'd be relieved that the true culprit's been found."
Morgana struggled with a smile. "Of course I am." She told him. She looped her arm through mine as she said, "Come, Lizzie. I fancy having some tea."
I wanted to go to Merlin, but I was forced to follow Morgana. Once we got to her chambers, she began pacing, stomping her feet.
"Who was that man?!" She demanded, crossing her arms.
"How am I to know?" I shrugged from my spot at her dining table. On the inside, I was extremely happy that Gwen was safe, but with every passing second I was worried about Merlin.
"Why is he saying that he planted that poultice?" She asked again as she continued to pace.
"How am I to know?" I asked again.
"I planted that poultice," She said. "I know I did!"
"I know that too," I said to her as I stood up. "But there's no point in wondering now. The man is to be burned on the pyre tomorrow, it's not like we can ask him."
"You're right," She sighed as she sat down next to me. "But what are we going to do now? Gwen's still alive!"
Thank God for that. "But that doesn't mean that she'll still end up with Arthur. Uther knows that they had a relationship before."
She leaned her head on my shoulder. "I guess you're right. You're always right."
I know I was, but I had to get out of here and find Merlin. "Morgana, I'm not feeling very well. I think I'll go get some rest."
"Of course, you go lie down," She said as she gave me a kiss on the cheek. "Go get some sleep."
I patted her hand as she lifted her head from my shoulder. I carefully walked out of the room, but once I was outside of her chambers I bolted down the hall towards the dungeons.
Once I got there, I slipped past the guards and got to Merlin's cell, where, to my horror, he was still an old man.
"What happened?" I hissed when I got there, grabbing a hold of the bars on the cell.
"I can't break the spell," He cried. "It's too powerful."
"Well..." I panicked. "Try again!"
"I have tried, it's no good," He told me. "I'm stuck like this."
"But you can't be!" I whispered harshly. "Uther's having you burnt at the stake tomorrow! There has to be another way to break the spell."
"Gaius says there is," He told me. "He said in the book of Gala there's an antidote that can undo aging spells."
"How long will it take to make?" I asked.
"He says longer than I have. I'm to buy as much time as I can."
"And how are you going to do that?"
"I have no idea," He told me. He lifted his old hands and rested them on the bars where my fingers were. I grabbed a hold of his fingers as best as I could through the bars. There were wrinkly and soft in my hands, but I knew they were Merlin's. Strong, magical, and always ready to save everyone.
I looked down at our entwined fingers sadly, then back up to Merlin, who was looking at them the same way. I squeezed his fingers gently. "I'm going to save you," I told him. "I'm not living my life without you in it."
"You swear?" He croaked.
I nodded through my tears. "I swear." I gave him a watery smile. "I'll love you when you look old, and when you look young. I'll love you when you're happy, mad or sad. I'll love you when you're smart and when you're stupid. I'll always love you."
He looked like was going to cry as he nodded. "I'll love you in the same way."
I leaned down and softly kissed his fingers. "I'd stay here, but I'm going to go help Gaius with the anti aging spell."
He nodded. "Okay."
I gave him one final smile before turning around and running out of the dungeons to get to the physician's chambers so I could save my love's life.
Gaius and I worked through the night to make the anti-aging potion, but we weren't quick enough because by the time we got to the dungeons, Merlin was already being escorted out of the dungeons and out to the pyre. We had no choice but to go to the square, where Merlin was being led towards the pyre as a drum rolled.
"You have been found guilty of using magic and enchantments," Uther's voice from the balcony bellowed. "In accordance with our law, you will be burned at the stake. Let this serve as a lesson to all those who seek to destroy Camelot."
Merlin saw Gaius and me in the crowd, Gaius discreetly showing Merlin the antidote bottle. All of a sudden, he turned and lunged at Gaius. "A curse upon you all!" He boomed as he grabbed the bottle from his hands. "I will have my revenge!"
The guards pulled Merlin off of Gaius and towards the pyre as Arthur came over to the two of us. "Are you alright, Gaius?" He asked him, and after Gaius nodded, Arthur turned to me. "Elizabeth?"
"I'm fine," I assured him.
All of a sudden, Merlin chanted a spell, and the pyre burst into huge flames. I grabbed Gaius's arm and pulled him back away from the fire as Merlin pushed through the crowd.
"After him!" Arthur shouted as he and the guards ran.
I turned to Gaius. "I'm going to. I have to make sure that Merlin's okay."
Gaius nodded his okay, and I grabbed my skirts as I weaved through the crowd. I had just gotten to the crowd of guards when I heard Arthur ask, "Merlin, where's the sorcerer?"
I felt my heart soar with relief when I stopped beside Arthur to see Merlin. Real, actual, young Merlin.
"He w..." He started, his voice much like the Old Merlin's until he coughed and cleared his throat, pointing to the wall behind him. "Erm...he went that way."
Arthur turned to the guards. "Sound the warning bell. Search the entire palace. I want him found." Just as the guards left, Arthur turned back to Merlin. "Are you telling me you let him run straight past you?"
"He was- he was- he was too fast for me," Merlin told him.
"He's a doddery old man!" Arthur exclaimed. He gave Merlin a glare as he said, "This is what happens when you spend all day in the tavern."
"What?" Merlin asked, looking at me for an explanation. I shrugged helplessly. I hadn't come up with that. It must have been Gaius.
"Perhaps mucking out my horses will help sober you up," Arthur said as he practically slapped Merlin's face before turning around and following his guards to find the "sorcerer".
Once I was sure Arthur had turned the corner and that the hall was empty, I leaped into Merlin's arms, hugging him tightly. He was a little off kilter, but he regained his balance as he hugged me tightly back. "I'm so glad you're okay!" I mumbled into his shoulder. I lifted my head from his shoulder and kissed his cheeks before quickly kissing his lips. "You're a complete idiot and your plan was stupid but it worked and you're safe!"
"Yes, I'm safe!" Merlin said in between the kisses I was peppering on him. He finally managed to pry me off of him as he held me by my shoulders. "I'm fine, I'm all right."
"If you're sure..." I started.
He nodded. "I'm sure."
I grinned up at him as I said, "Then you probably shouldn't leave Arthur's horses waiting."
I was sitting with Gaius later in the day (after hugging Gwen tightly and crying over how relieved I was over the fact that she was safe), where he was teaching me different kinds of healing herbs when the doors opened and Merlin strolled in, covered in dung.
Gaius looked up and smiled when he saw Merlin. "Ah, Merlin. It's good to see you looking like your old self."
"I'm covered in horse dung," Merlin stated plainly.
Gaius nodded. "Precisely."
Merlin gave Gaius a look. "Arthur seems to think I spent the day in the tavern. I don't suppose you, er...you know where he got that idea?"
"I really can't imagine," Gaius answered, and Merlin just rolled his eyes as he strolled over to me.
I felt bad, but I held up a hand. "Oh, and Merlin? Please take a bath before you try to kiss me again."
TBC...
I'm legit a horrible person.
So close to the finale! Wow, I can't believe we're here already.

THE ADVENTURES OF ELIZABETH MALINOR CONTINUE...
"Let the tournament begin!" Morgana announces.
"The only rule is-there are no rules," Arthur explains to Merlin.
A boy battles a large man, ducking to avoid his attacks.
"He's using magic," Merlin says to Gaius.
The boy's eyes glow gold as his opponent falls to the ground, defeated.
"If Uther finds out, he'll have him killed," Gaius informs Merlin.
"You need to learn how to use your magic for good!" Merlin implores the boy. "That is it's true purpose!"
"I'm not going to apologize for who I am!" The boy retorts
"Then you'll surely get yourself killed!" Elizabeth tries explaining to the boy.
"It's time those with magic fought back," The boy says to the both of them.
The boy faces off against Uther, knocking the King down to the ground and thrusting his sword through his shield, the tip of his sword barely grazing the King's nose.
