Episode 53:City Under Siege

Trent rose groggily, yawning as he did. At his side, Botamon, Kiko, and Lunamon slept atop a mattress on the floor. Derek, Misaki, Gale, and their partners were nearby, on mattresses of their own. While Chloe, and Pupumon occupied the only proper bed in the hospital room.

He slid out of bed, careful not to wake the others. He then slipped on his shoes, and moved over toward the nearby window. Outside, he could make out the barest hint of the sun peeking past the horizon. Now that the fog had completely dissipated, he could now see the empty city beyond the hospital grounds. Buildings, and vehicles feeling like empty, lifeless husks.

With a sigh, he recalled yesterday's events.

It had been a bit hectic after everyone had finally awoken. First there was confusion. Then panic began to settle in as everyone saw the empty streets outside. Total chaos threatened to erupt if not for a few level heads stepping forward.

Sarah was among them, doing her best to explain the situation. She, and the head doctors quickly took charge. All of them agreeing that they needed to stay in the hospital until help arrived. Rooms were assigned to everyone. Quite a few people having to share. Jobs, and tasks were also divvied out to anyone able bodied enough to do them.

The next couple of hours went by like a blur. Everyone moved to try an accommodate all the extra people now having to stay. Supplies were organized, and catalogued. Any, and all wounds were tended to, major, or minor. And whenever there was a spare moment, people tried to make contact with the outside.

Trent turned as he heard movement behind him. Botamon was awakening from his slumber, and moving out from the covers.

"Morning." Trent whispered.

Botamon hummed in recognition, and let out a long yawn. He then hopped over to the windowsill.

"It's so quiet." Botamon remarked, looking out.

Trent nodded. "Yeah. There's not even a single cricket chirp."

"It's like a surreal dream."

"More like a nightmare." Trent frowned.

It was a couple hours later when everyone awoke. Not long after, the call went out for breakfast to be served. Trent, Gale, Misaki, and Kiko, all headed toward the cafeteria. While Derek, and Chloe had to stay behind with the digimon.

The four returned soon after with several trays of eggs, ham, and toast. Everyone was quickly settled in, and dug into their meal. Each of the teens sharing their food with their partners.

"So, what exactly is the plan now?" Gale asked, biting into a piece of toast.

"Yeah, we're basically walking in the dark right now." Chloe added.

"There isn't a whole lot we can do." Kiko sighed.

"I can think of where to start." Trent said, gathering everyone's attention. "Emily, and my mom can't be the only people who avoided the song. There have to be some other stragglers out there. I say we go out there, and search. See if we can find anybody."

Magimon gave a nod at that. "That would also let us scout out the city. See if we can find signs of Daemon and his servants. Or perhaps clues as to where all the people have disappeared to."

There was a general murmur of agreement from the rest of the group.

"All right then, it's decided." Trent said with a nod.

"I think at least one of us should stay here." Kiko suggested. "Make sure this place stays safe, y'know?"

"Well, Chloe and I aren't in any real shape to go anywhere." Derek said with a sigh.

The girl nodded in agreement. "Yeah, as much as I want to help, we'd be better off staying here."

"Fufumon, and me will stay too." Gale volunteered. "We can at least put up a fight if something comes up."

"That leaves the rest of us to head out." Trent said. "I'll ask my mom to cover for us if anybody starts asking questions. Then, we can get ready to go."

Kiko suddenly stood up. "I have to do something before I go. I won't take too long."

The boy headed out the door, and down the hall. He moved four doors down, and knocked sharply.

"Come in."

With the go ahead, Kiko stepped through the door. Inside, he found the twins, and Emily all sitting on the floor. Hector, and Emily both sat across from each other, playing a game of checkers. Alex was propped on a pillow nearby, playing his 3ds.

"King me!" Emily chuckled, as she took two more of Hector's pieces.

Hector grumbled angrily under his breath, and looked up to his brother. "Hey, Kiko."

"Hey. guys." Kiko greeted, before turning to Emily. "Hey, you mind if I borrow my brothers for a minute?"

Emily shook her head in response. Kiko nodded to his thanks, and motioned for his brothers to follow him. Alex paused his game. He and his brother then followed Kiko out into the hall.

Kiko took a moment to collect himself, before turning to his brothers. "Alright guys, listen up. I'm going to be out for a while okay? I need you to be good while I'm gone."

"What?" Hector gasped. "Where are you going?"

"Just out, okay. My friends and I are gonna go see if we kind anyone who needs help." He tussled his hair playfully. "I won't be gone long."

Hector rushed forward, grabbing onto his brother's leg. "Please don't go! What if something happens to you!" He sniffled, holding back a tear. "We'll be all alone."

Kiko frowned, and grabbed onto Hector's shoulders. "Hey. Don't worry, I'll be back."

Alex looked up to him, eyes misting with tears. "You promise?"

Kiko placed a hand on each of his brother shoulders, and smiled. "I promise."

After some debate with his mother, Trent convinced her to let them leave. The three teens then gathered their things, and moved out. Kiko paused to give one last farewell to his brothers, before following his friends.

They crept through the halls, being sure to avoid any of the roaming security patrols. Eventually they made it to one of the rear entrances, and slipped out undetected. They moved around the main building, and headed toward the parking lot. After making sure they weren't being followed, they piled into Kiko's van. The teen switched on the engine, and pulled out onto the street.

After a short drive, the group came to a four way intersection. Kiko parked nearby, and the group hopped out of the van. A stiff wind blew as they looked about the area. Kicking up bits of trash, and debris, and sending it fluttering across the street.

"Let's start with that apartment complex." Trent said, pointing a thumb toward the building in question. "Then we can spread out from there, and search the other buildings."

"Be sure to keep in touch." Magimon added, pointing to the teen's communication circles. "And make sure the circles don't get smudged or damaged."

"We know. That's only the fourth time you've told us that." Trent said with a roll of his eyes.

Magimon simply harrumphed in response.

Without further delay, the six headed for the nearby apartment complex. As they moved inside, each of the pairs was assigned a floor. Misaki, and Magimon moved to the third floor, while Kiko, and Lunamon went to the second. Leaving Trent, and Botamon to search the first.

Misaki, and Magimon found nothing as they searched through the first few apartments. Occasionally an item, or something else would be out of place. From a milk carton on the counter, to a still running shower. Most everything else was untouched, making the homes feel that much more empty.

After searching the first two halls of rooms, the pair moved onto the next. They stepped into an apartment slightly larger than the others. They immediately heard the low blare of tv static as they entered. Magimon quickly switched it off, and moved to search the other rooms.

Misaki went to follow, but paused midstep. She glanced over to her right, spotting a small table with several family photos. The most prominent depicted two men, holding hands tightly. Sitting atop one of the men's shoulders was a young girl, smiling toothily.

Misaki sighed sadly, and took a quick glance around the room. She could see a half cup of coffee, and a small plate of cookies nearby. Another half eaten cookie lay on the couch cushions. Sitting right beside it, was a stuffed fox toy, lying on its side.

The girl moved toward the couch, and picked up the doll gently. She rolled it over in her grip, feeling the soft fur play across her fingers.

"Yo, Misaki, Magimon!"

Misaki snapped back to reality, and turned about. Standing at the doorway, were Kiko, and Lunamon. The young man offered her a wave, which she returned awkwardly. Magimon then entered the room seconds later.

"We just got done looking through the second floor." Kiko said, gesturing behind him. "You guys find anything?"

Misaki shook her head, and looked back down to the toy in her grip. Her three companions frowned, sharing a look of concern.

"Misaki...are you alright?" Magimon asked, approaching her.

"I'm fine. I just…" She sighed, as she struggled to find the words.

"Thinking about your parents, right?" Kiko asked.

Misaki turned back to him, her grip tightening slightly around the doll. "Aren't you too?"

Kiko paused, eyes looking to the floor. "I've been trying not to. I gotta stay focused right now. Worrying isn't gonna help anybody. We just gotta hope they're okay."

Lunamon moved over to him, placing a hand on his leg comfortingly.

"That's easier said than done." Misaki replied.

"Yeah, I know."

"You wouldn't have to worry if it weren't for me." Magimon growled bitterly.

Misaki approached, and bent down to face him. "Don't start with that Magimon."

"But-"

"No buts." she said, shaking her head. "I know you did everything you could. It's not your fault."

After a few moments of silence, Magimon gave a slow nod in reply. Misaki offered a small smile in return.

"Alright, enough with the pity party." Kiko said, trying to clear the air. "We still got work to do."

Misaki stood up straight, and spun to face him. "Right."

Outside of the now quiet city, the world was in an uproar. News reports of a city cut off from all communications, played on every channel. Social media, and forums exploded with discussion about the event. Government officials held press conferences, and discussed the next course of action.

Some were calling it an unprecedented terrorist attack. Others were calling it some act of war, by a larger foreign power. Blame was tossed around in all directions. But no one could provide any evidence for their claims. All of it boiling down to baseless accusations, and reactionary hysteria.

The president soon called for immediate action from the military. With his go ahead, the national guard was mobilized. Houston's surrounding areas were evacuated, as the guard rolled in. Convoys of armored vehicles, drove across the paved roads. Helicopters moved ahead of them while several tanks were trailing behind.

They all came to stop, as they neared the cities limits. Soldiers rushed out of the backs of armored vehicles, all moving into position. A perimeter was soon set up, with vehicles, and soldiers at the ready. Standing over the entire proceedings, was Major General, Georgia Langley.

She was an older woman with shaved gray hair. She was squat, and broad shouldered. Her uniform was crisp, and well pressed, and a pair of aviator shades sat across the bridge of her nose. She stood in a quickly erected communication station, looking out toward the city.

A soldier quickly marched up to her, saluting sharply. "M'am, everything is in position, as per your instructions!"

"Thank you lieutenant." she replied with a nod. "Next, I want an aerial survey of the city. I want to see if we can make out anything about the situation."

"Yes ma'am! I'll have the choppers sent out immediately!"

The lieutenant rushed off, and quickly relayed his orders. Within minutes, a trio of choppers were preparing for take off. Their props began to spin at speed. Creating an almost deafening noise, and kicking up dust, and bits of debris. They then took off into the air, moving in formation as they headed toward the city.

Langley leaned over a nearby communications desk. "Can you get me visuals?"

"Negative ma'am" one of the officers responded. "We have lost communications with the choppers. They seem to be being cut off by some kind of long range jamming frequency."

"That would explain the cities communication being cut off." the major general said thoughtfully. "But for there to be a jamming signal that cuts off all forms of communication. I've never heard of such a thing." She put a hand to her chin. "This could be more dangerous than we thought."

The three helicopters spread out as they moved into the city limits. So they could more easily survey the area. All of them looked down to the empty streets, trying to find anything out of the ordinary. After several minutes of searching, one of the pilots spotted several shapes. They moved in for a closer look, and gasped at what they saw.

Down below, a large group of virus infected digimon gathered. All of them in varying shapes, and sizes. Towering among them was a single Ghoulmon. The mega's three eyes locked onto the chopper, and it raised one of it's claws.

"Death Arrow!"

Three bolts of energy flew from the eye in quick succession. The pilot jerked on the control stick, moving to dodge the attack. They were too slow however, and they struck the helicopter's rear propeller. The vehicle quickly went spiraling out of control. It smashed hard into the side of a nearby building, before being engulfed in a fiery explosion.

Off in the distance, Langley spotted the smoke rising into the sky. "What the hell just happened?!"

A soldier whipped out a pair of binoculars beside her. They focused on the cloud of smoke, zooming in as much as possible.

"Ma'm, it looks like Echo two just went down!"

The woman turned toward him "What?!"

They zoomed back out, looking to the cities perimeter. "Umm...M'am you're not gonna believe this but, it looks like there are...monsters coming out of the city."

"Monsters?!" she shouted incredulously. "What in blazes are you talking about?!"

She quickly ripped the binoculars from his grasp."Give me that!"

She looked out toward the city. "I don't see any-"

The woman gasped, as she sighted several Ghoulmon trundling down the streets. Alongside them, dozens of virus infected digimon marched. Vehicles were crushed, and pushed aside as they passed. While pavement crumbled, and cracked beneath their feet.

Langley slowly dropped the binoculars. "What in god's name…"

Suddenly a bolt of energy streaked through the air. It struck one of the nearby armored trucks dead on, piercing straight through the engine block. The fuel tank exploded moments later, creating a burst of fire, and smoke.

"Everyone into defensive positions!" Langley shouted.

The soldiers scrambled to get into any kind of cover. They readied weapons, magazines clicking into place. Several more bolts of light flew from the enemy as they prepared. Two of them ripping through another armored vehicle like paper.

"Open fire!" the major general ordered, as she too took cover.

A hail of gunfire soon erupted from behind the barricade. Muzzles flashed, and bullets whistled through the air. The fire collided with the oncoming digimon, bouncing off of thick, armored hides harmlessly. Gouts of flame, and bolts of lightning were then fired in retaliation.

Barricades were blown apart, and soldiers were sent scattering. They tried to retaliate with another barrage of gunfire, but with no results. The virus infected digimon continued forward not so much as slowed by the attack.

"Tanks into position!" Langley shouted above the din. "Open fire on the big ones!"

Three tanks all rolled into formation. With a loud whirring noise, the turrets took aim. Three thunderous booms then ripped through the air as they fired. They each crashed into a Ghoulmon, creating a fiery explosion on impact. The three demon's were slightly staggered by the attack, but continued forward.

As the smoke cleared, one of the Ghoulmon zeroed on the tanks. Its cyclopean then began to glow, as energy gathered within.

"Explosion Eye!"

A beam of black and red energy fired forth. Like a molten lance, it pierced through one of the tanks. The vehicle being quickly reduced to a pile of molten slag.

Langley, and all the gathered soldiers gasped, and shouted in horror. The major general then called for retreat, motioning toward the remaining armored vehicles. The soldiers needed no second bidding, and rushed to the transports, piling in as swiftly as possible. With the squeak of tires, and clank of treads the entire convoy rolled back the way came. Several digimon attacks following behind them as they retreated.

The infected all finally stopped, when the troops were well out of range. Then slowly, they moved back toward the city. All of them coming together to form a protective perimeter.

After driving nearly a mile out, the armored convoy came to a halt. The two remaining choppers soon joined them, landing in a nearby field. Langley slammed the door angrily, as she hopped out of her car. The lieutenant soon followed after, coming to stand by her side silently.

"What should we do now m'am?"

The major general sighed, as she looked toward the city. "We call for backup."

Gale sat near the window, looking out to the surrounding area. Fufumon was nearby, meditating upon the windowsill. Derek, and Poromon lay napping on their mattress, still recovering their strength. Chloe held a book in her grip, quietly reading along with Pupumon. Occasionally the pair would look toward the window, for any sign of danger.

The silence was suddenly broken, when a soft knock came at the door. Gale stood up, and strolled over to the door.

"Who is it?" she asked, making sure to keep her voice down.

"It's June." a soft voice answered from the other side.

Gale opened the door, and motioned the other girl inside. She put a finger to her lips, and pointed toward the sleeping Derek, and Poromon. June nodded in understanding, and quietly moved toward the other side of the room. She then grabbed one of the free chairs, placing it near the window.

"So, what's up?" Gale asked, plopping down in her own seat.

"I really don't know what do with myself right now." June replied with a sigh. "So...I thought I'd see what you guys were up to."

"Just keepin an eye out." Gale answered. "Making sure we're safe."

June swallowed nervously. "Have you...seen anything?"

"No yet." said Fufumon. "But we're keeping our guard up."

June sighed a little in relief, and looked about the room. "Say, where are your other friends?"

"They're out searching the city." said Chloe, closing her book. "They're trying to find anyone else who might have escaped the song."

"Or any sign of Daemon." Gale added with a scowl.

June looked downward, clasping her hands tightly. "Do you think- Do you think they'll find my parents?"

There was a long heavy silence, before Gale tried to reply. "I don't-"

The girl was suddenly interrupted as a large chaotic noise echoed through the air. June jumped in surprise, nearly falling out of her chair. Derek, and Poromon quickly awoke, rising from their bed.

"The hell is going on?" the boy asked, looking about in confusion.

Chloe's brow furrowed in concern. "It sounds like...gunshots."

The sounds of several explosions soon ripped through the air as well. Mixing together with roar of continuous gunfire. All of it echoing far into the distance.

"Holy shit." Gale cursed. "Sounds like there's a freaking war going on."

The three partner digimon, suddenly took up battle positions. All of them feeling the approaching auras of several digimon.

"Gale, we've got enemies incoming." Fufumon said as he quickly digivolved into Ryudamon.

Gale, and June peered out the window. After a few moments, the forms of several virus infected digimon appeared. They lumbered through the streets, and then turned toward the hospital. From all around screams of terror could be heard from the nearby rooms. As they too saw the approaching digimon.

Gale, and Ryudamon rushed toward the door. "You guys stay here, we'll handle this!"

Without another word, the pair headed out, bolting down the hallway. They rushed past several people as they ran. All of them having to do a double take. After rushing down two flights of stairs, the pair reached one of the emergency exits. They did not slow, sprinting toward the west side of the building.

As they rounded the corner, Ryudamon was engulfed in light. The form of Ginryumon then appeared, and flew toward the gathering of digimon at top speed.

"Just get their attention!" Gale shouted. "We gotta get them away from the hospital!"

"Right!" Ginryumon called back. "Tekkoujin!"

Six spears fired from the dragon's mouth. They flew overheard, before sinking into the earth, and forming a barricade. All the infected digimon paused, and turned toward the pair.

"Over here uglies!" Gale taunted. "Come and get some!"

Ginryumon fired a beam of light from his horns. The golden energy smashed into a pair of enemies, bowling them over. The group of feral digimon roared in anger, and charged toward the two. Gale quickly hopped onto her partner's back, and the pair headed off, away from the hospital. The enemy then followed, just as planned.

It had been a few hours since Trent, and the others had started their sweep of the city. The group had searched several apartment complexes. And even a few large stores, and other businesses. But their was still no sign of anyone who had escaped GranDracmon's song.

As the group drove to their next search area, Botamon's stomach suddenly grumbled. The little digimon moved from his spot, leaping into his partner's lap.

"Trent, can we stop for something to eat? I'm getting hungry."

"It has been a few hours since breakfast." Magimon pointed out.

"I could go for something myself." Kiko added, looking at his friend.

"Alright, sure." Trent said. "Let's see if we can find a good place."

After a few minutes of searching, Kiko, pulled into the parking lot of an old style diner. The group hopped out, and headed toward the entrance, finding it unlocked. Inside, dozens of tables were still set. Food, and drink, lay half eaten, and cold. While tips, and other payments were left on the tables.

Trent moved over to the register, and hopped over the counter. He opened the latch on the other side, allowing his friends to pass through. The six then headed toward the kitchen in the back. Several pots, and pans were strewn about the space. The griddle, and a few stove hubs still burning hot.

Kiko moved to turn them off, as the others searched for ingredients. It didn't take them long to find the freezer, and pantry. All of them grabbing ingredients for hamburgers, and some frozen french fries. The smell of sizzling beef, toasting bread, and crisping fries soon filled the space.

The food was ready in minutes, and the group moved into dining area, to enjoy their meal. It passed mostly silence. All of them feeling too on edge for any sort of small talk.

As they were finishing up, Botamon, Magimon, and Lunamon all felt a sudden presence. There were several auras, some distance away. All of them moving together. One stood among all the rest. Even from this distance, they could feel it's oppressive power. It seemed almost as if it were slumbering, ready to awaken and unleash destruction at any moment.

"Do you sense something?" Misaki asked, seeing her partner's far off look.

He turned to her, and nodded. "There are several digimon some distance away from here. They all seem to be moving in the same direction."

Trent quickly stuffed his last fry into his mouth. "Let's go check it out."

The others nodded, and the six swiftly headed out of the restaurant. To keep from being spotted they decided to go on foot. The three teens following after the digimon, as they lead the way.

After running for several minutes, the auras began to move in their direction. The six quickly took cover in a nearby department store, peaking out the windows. They waited patiently, catching their breath, as the auras continued their approach.

Eventually, a trio of Boogeymon came into view. Trailing behind them was a procession of humans. All of them bound in chains, and shackles of energy. Several Boogeymon were placed along the line, moving alongside them. The humans were visibly terrified as they marched. Any time one of them would slow or lag behind, a Boogeymon would prod them with his pitchfork.

Surveying over the proceedings was DarkDramon. The cyborg digimon flew over the marching humans. His eyes scanning about for anymore possible targets.

"Darkdramon Mega level Cyborg type digimon." Misaki's digivice chimed. "A digimon that was created to be the ultimate weapon. It is said that his lance rivals Gallantmon's legendary weapon. His core is powered by dark matter, giving him immense energy output. His special attack is Dark Roar."

"Looks like we found some serious trouble." Kiko said, peering over a shelf.

"We have to save those people." Trent whispered, gripping onto his sword.

Botamon nodded heartily in agreement. "Yeah, let's go guys."

"Wait." Magimon exclaimed, holding up a hand. "Let's not rush into this. We could learn some valuable information. I say we follow them for now."

"I think Magimon is right." Misaki agreed. "They could lead us to all the other people."

Trent considered the suggestion for a moment. "Kiko? Lunamon?"

"I think its a good idea." Lunamon answered.

"Yeah." Kiko added. "And once we figure out where they're taking them, then we can free those people. They might even take us right to Daemon."

Trent turned to his partner. "Guess we're outvoted on this one buddy."

"Seems that way." Botamon replied.

With their plan set, the group tailed Darkdramon and the others. They moved from building to building as they observed them. Passing through alleyways, and crossing streets, to reach new cover. For at least an hour they pursued, narrowly being spotted only once.

As the group moved into another store, Trent spotted one of the prisoners trailing behind. It was a boy, looking only a couple years younger than himself.

The boy was sweating profusely, his legs wobbling as he walked. Even from a distance, Trent could tell his breathing was labored. Moments later, his legs finally gave out, and he fell to his knees. The entire procession was stopped dead in it's tracks.

One of the Boogeymon hovered over to him. "Get up! Your holding us up!"

"I just...need to catch...my breath." the boy whimpered. "Please, I'm so tired."

"I don't care!" the digimon growled. "Now get up! You worthless human!"

He slammed the back of his pitchfork on the ground threateningly.

"Can't you just give the kid a little break?" one of the other prisoners asked.

The Boogeymon quickly rounded on him. "You'll shut your trap, if you know what's good for you!"

Anger bubbled within Trent, and Botamon, as they watched. The teen gripped his sword anxiously, while the digimon's fur stood on end.

The Boogeymon turned back to the boy. "Now get up you little brat!"

"Just...another minute...please."

"That's it!" The demon raised his pitchfork, readying to run the boy through.

Trent, and Botamon could not stand by any longer. Within a fraction of second, Trent drew his sword, and his partner quickly evolved into Huckmon. The resulting flash of light gave the Boogeymon pause, giving the duo precious seconds.

They leapt out through the storefront window, shattering it into pieces. Huckmon unleashed a pair of fireballs, as Trent rushed forward. The attack sent the demon staggering back, leaving him wide open. With all his might, Trent brought down his sword, alighting it with flames. A long gash was cut along the Boogeymon's middle, and he fell to the ground, roaring in pain.

Darkdramon growled, and looked down to the pair. "The chosen of the fireheart. You live up to your chivalry." He raised his lance. "Take comfort that your last act was a gallant one."

Kiko, Lunamon, Misaki, and Magimon all rushed out of the store. Lunamon, and Kiko were then enwrapped in shimmering pink light.

"Lunamon warp digivolve to...Dianamon!"

Black and blue energy started crackle at the tip of Darkdramon's lance. Dianamon acted quickly, summoning her bow, and aiming skyward.

"Arrow of Artemis!"

The frozen arrow flew, and blindsided Darkdramon. It's force sent him smashing into a nearby building, and it's energy was released. Within in a fraction of a second, his entire body was encased in solid ice. The Phelesmon looked up, dumbfounded.

"Thanks for the save guys!" Trent exclaimed, turning to his friends.

"We need to get these people to cover!" Magimon shouted, as he and Misaki shone with blue light.

"Magimon warp digivolve to...ArchMagusmon!"

Trent gave a quick nod of agreement. "Right! Huckmon, and I will take care of that. You guys cover our back."

"You got it!" Kiko shouted back, as Dianamon moved to bar the Boogeymon's path.

Trent quickly helped the exhausted boy to his feet. He looked to Trent, and the digimon, utterly flabbergasted by what he was seeing.

"You alright to move?" Trent asked.

"I...think so."

"Good." Trent turned to the other captives. "Everybody follow me, I'll get you all the safety!"

"Why should we trust you kid?" a man shouted.

Trent rolled his eyes, and pointed to the Boogeymon. "Would you rather take your chances with them?!"

The man quickly shook his head, silencing his argument. Trent, and Huckmon then motioned for everyone to follow, and took off. The captives sprinted after them, ArchMagusmon, and Dianamon protecting them from any pursuing Boogeymon.

"How long will that ice hold him?" ArchMagusmon asked, as he took out a pair of Boogeymon.

Dianamon easily cut down a trio of the demons. "Hopefully long enough for Trent, and Huckmon to get those people to safety."

As ArchMagusmon took out the last of the demons, he spotted a lone human. It was a young woman, with long baggy clothes. Her eyes were half lidded, and almost sleepy.

"What the heck is she still doing here?!" Dianamon exclaimed. "Why didn't she go with the others?"

The young woman stepped forward, raising her arm. Her long sleeve rolled down, revealing a pulsing dark parasite.

"I think that answers your question." Kiko said, brow furrowing.

Misaki took a cautious step back. "A dark digivice."

"Something's different about this one." ArchMagusmon warned. "I can sense it."

Suddenly a wave of dark energy poured off of the young woman. The eye upon her digivice flashed, and a strange light blue symbol appeared. Darkdramon glowed with the same symbol. The ice around him, slowly began to crack, before shattering into hundreds of pieces. Another burst of dark energy erupted from his body as he emerged.

ArchMagusmon, and Dianamon flew up into the sky, squaring off against the mega. Dianamon was the first to make a move. She rushed in, sheathing her polearm in icy energy. With a battlecry, she brought the blade down.

Darkdramon raised his shield, stopping the attack dead. He then knocked Dianamon weapons aside, pushing her back. His engines flared whirirng with energy, as he raised his lance.

"Gigas Lance!"

Like a drill, the lance began to spin, as he rocketed forward. Dianamon braced herself for the inevitable impact, too close to avoid the attack.

"Pendragon's Seal! Defend!"

With a flash of light, ArchMagusmon's magic circle appeared between the two. Darkdramon's lance smashed into the barriers surface, creating a giant flash of sparks. ArchMagusmon focused his energy on the barrier, keeping it steady. Despite his efforts, the circle began to buckle, and crack beneath Darkdramon's onslaught. Just before the barrier gave way, Dianamon flew higher into the sky.

Darkdramon stopped himself, and spun about to charge Dianamon once more. She was ready for him, bringing down her polearm with all her might. An echoing clang, and a shockwave erupted outward as the two attacks impacted.

"What are you planning to do with all those people?!" Dianamon growled, as the two clashed. "Where were you taking them?"

"They are valuable pawns in the master's plan" Darkdramon shouted back. "Beyond that, you don't need to know anymore."

As the two struggled against one another, ArchMagusmon pointed his staff forward. "Mystic Thunder!"

Purple arcane lightning arced from the tip of his staff. With a crackling boom, it crashed into Darkdramon's back. The cyborg digimon roared in pain, giving Dianamon her opening. She unlocked their weapons, and did a full spin, coming back around with a powerful kick.

The other mega was sent flying away, spinning head over foot. With a grunt of effort, he poured energy into his rockets. The thrust quickly stopped his momentum, and righted him. He growled, eyes beginning to glow with yellow energy.

"Demon Gaze!"

Two beams of spiraling blue, and yellow energy fired from his eyes. They hurtled toward Dianamon, forcing her to move out their path. With her momentarily distracted, Darkdramon charged toward ArchMagusmon at top speed.

He smashed into the wizard shield first. ArchMagusmon gasped, as the wind was knocked from his lungs. Darkdramon continued on his forward course, taking the wizard with him. With a loud crash, the two smashed through the window of an office building. Office desks, file cabinets, and papers went flying as Darkdramon rammed ArchMagusmon through the building.

Finally, the two came out the other side, crashing through another window. Darkdramon came to halt, and ArchMagusmon went plummeting downward. He didn't fall far, before impacting into the roof of another building.

"Arrow Of Artemis!"

Without turning, Darkdramon quickly flew to the side. An icy arrow flew past, missing him by several inches. The arrow continued on it's course, and struck the street. A giant explosion of crystal, and powdered ice erupted from the impact zone.

"Demon Gaze!"

The two spiral beams of energy hit directly into Dianamon's side. An electric pain coursed through her body, as the beams struck. She roared, as her body momentarily seized up. Darkdramon then moved in, striking her with a powerful swing of his armored tail. The impact knocked her away, sending her body crashing into a nearby skyscraper.

Kiko, and Misaki watched on from down below. Darkdramon's partner stood not far away, eyes half lidded.

"What's with her?" Kiko asked. "She's even more zoned out than the others."

"I'm more worried about her partner." Misaki said. "He's powerful, and I don't think he's even gotten serious yet."

"I hope Trent get's back soon. We could use the backup."

Gale, and Ginryumon finally came to a stop as they reached a four way intersection. The girl leapt off her partner's back, and got some distance. Ginryumon then turned about to face the pursuing infected digimon.

"Let's take care of this quick!" Gale shouted, digivice shining bright. "I don't want to be away from hospital any longer than we need to!"

"Right!" Ginryumon shouted back, as his form was bathed in gold. "Ginryumon digivolve to...Hisyarumon!"

The dragon's gems began to shine with power. "Wheel Of The Sun!"

Twin beams of golden light erupted forth. They smashed through the mass of digimon, reducing any in its path to smoldering cinders. In retaliation, four bolts of electricity flew from the crowd. Each of them struck the dragon, momentarily staggering him.

One of the infected spotted Gale, and separated from the crowd. It raised its claws, charging the girl. Hisyarumon called out, as the it neared, but he could not react in time.

Gale readied herself, focusing on the power of her sigl. Her inner light flowed through her being, strengthening her body. Just as the enemy was about to bring down its claw, Gale attacked. She struck with all her might, smashing her fist into the creature's face. With a loud crunch, the digimon went flying backward, floored by the strike.

Gale hissed through grit teeth, shaking her hand. "Damn that smarts."

Hisyarumon quickly moved in to finish off the digimon. "Are you alright Gale?"

"Yeah, I'm good." Gale replied. "Just hurt my hand a little."

With the dragon distracted, a trio of Kuwagamon flew from the crowd. They grappled the dragon, using their combined weight to topple him to the ground. With their powerful jaws, they set upon him, attempting to pierce his armored hide.

Hisyarumon roared, and rose back up. With a violent shake of his body, he knocked two of the Kuwagamon aside. He leaned down, biting down on the remaining insect. The champion screeched in pain, and the dragon tossed him aside like a ragdoll. The three were then quickly dispatched with a trio of golden light beams.

He then charged the remaining infected, striking with a powerful swipe of his tail. The front line were bowled over by the attack, ramming into anyone behind them. The dragon followed up with several vicious bites, and body slams. Each one taking out another enemy.

As the infected digimon began to thin, Gale felt a rumbling beneath her feet. The girl looked about frantically, as the rumbling grew louder, and louder. She gasped in shock, spotting the towering forms of two SkullGreymon.

The two ultimates picked up speed, lumbering toward the battle. Hisyarumon barely had time to react before they were upon him. He took to the air, avoiding a claw swipe, and circling high overhead.

"Wheel Of The Sun!"

Two beams of golden light fired from his gems. Each one striking one of the SkullGreymon. The two ultimates were momentarily staggered by the attack, but were quick to counter.

"Curse Breath!" the two roared in unison.

A noxious, rust colored mist spewed from their mouths. The two attacks rose upward, combining to form a single giant cloud. Hisyarumon coughed, and sputtered, as he was consumed by the cloud. He felt his eyes burn, and his body numb. With a thunderous boom, he fell, crashing into the street below.

He was immediately beset by the remaining smaller digimon. They all attacked at once, pouncing on the dragon like rabid wolves. Hisyarumon fought back with equal fervor, biting, clawing, and ramming his assailants.

The dragon had no time to celebrate as the last of them fell. For the two SkullGreymon were charging toward him. He flew to meet them, ramming into one with a powerful headbutt. The skeletal digimon staggered back from the attack. Hisyarumon then bit into the ultimate's shoulder, his body coiling around the SkullGreymon like a snake.

The other SkullGreymon raised it's claw. A dark, almost smoke like aura began to pour off of it.

"Death Nail!"

The bony claws sliced into Hisyarumon's armor. The smoky aura made shards of it rust, and peel away. Hisyarumon howled in pain, his grip loosening on his opponent. It gave the SkullGreymon just enough of an opening to free itself, and toss the dragon aside.

As three titans continued to struggle, Gale looked to her digivice.

"Come on! Come on! Go mega!" she growled, using all her focus to call upon more of her sigil's power.

Despite her efforts however, the device would not respond. It was still too soon after her last mega evolution. Her energy had yet to fully recover. She growled under her breath, cursing the device, and inability to call on more of its power. Instead, she focused on the energy flow between her, and her partner, giving him as much power as she could muster.

Hisyarumon grappled against one of the SkullGreymon, as the energy surged. With a brief boost, he rammed his armored head into the other ultimate. As the skeletal digimon staggered back, his jewels shone with golden light. With a great burst the two beams fired forward merging as they struck the SkullGreymon.

From Hisyaurmon's left, the other SkullGreymon was getting some distance. With a roar it slammed it's claws into the ground, rooting itself.

"Dark Shot!"

With the cry of his attack, the missile upon his back shot upward. It then began to plummet, whistling through the air.

"Incoming!" Gale shouted, pointing upward.

Hisyarumon spotted the approaching missile, and rose into the sky. "Yata No Kagami!"

In a flash of light, the dragon's shield appeared before him. He raised it skyward, continuing his approach toward the missile. The ballistic, and the barrier soon collided, creating a catastrophic explosion. Gale was nearly knocked off her feet, as a powerful shockwave ripped through the air. The windows of nearby buildings shattered, sending shards of glass scattering in all directions.

When the smoke cleared, Hisyarumon was heaving with effort. He was mostly unharmed by the explosion, but it had taken much of his energy to stop it. With a groan, he slowly floated back down, and faced off against the two SkullGreymon. Despite his exhaustion, he raised his gems as they approached, ready for battle.

The two SkullGreymon lumbered toward him, darkness pouring from their claws. Hisyarumon was ready to make his final stand, when a white light streaked through the sky.

"Celestial Arrow!"

From up above, and arrow of pure light struck one of the SkullGreymon. It let loose an inhuman screech, as the arrow ripped through it's shoulder. Its arm then fell away, crumbling into particles of data. The two ultimates turned with an angry roar, Hisyarumon, and Gale looking upward in awe.

Flying in the sky was a digimon, wreathed in shining light. She was a towering woman, standing ten feet tall. Her skin was a dusky brown, and long locks of silver hair flowed down her back. Six, white angelic wings sprouted from her back. A winged, metal mask, covered the top half of her face. A breastplate of pure silver metal protected her torso. Covering her left arm was a long metal gauntlet, with two metal wings curving from either side of it. Golden digicode runes decorated much of the amor's edges. Finally, a long golden ribbon was draped about her shoulders, and wrapped around her arms.

The angelic woman flew over to Hisyarumon, landing before him. He stared at her, totally stunned by her beauty.

"It's good to see you again." the angel smiled.

"Do I...know you?" the dragon asked.

"I don't blame you for not recognizing me." She reached out, and touched him with a gentle hand. "Here, let me help you. Halo Of Light!"

A sudden warmth coursed through Hisyarumon. He felt invigorated, wounds disappearing. With a gasp of surprise, he looked over himself, then to the mysterious digimon. She simply smiled in reply.

"Now, why don't we take care of these two?"

Hisyarumon nodded in agreement, and the pair rushed forward. The two SkullGreymon growled in challenge, unleashing a noxious decaying cloud. Hisyarumon summoned his barrier, and he, and his companion charged through the cloud unharmed. They then split off taking on a SkullGreymon each.

The angel dodged a swipe from the injured SkullGreymon. She then countered with a powerful spinning kick to the beast's jaw. It roared, lashing out with it's free arm, and snatching her in it's grip. The skeletal digimon began to squeeze, crushing the angel like a vice.

She struggled against its grip, before unleashing a burst of light. The flash momentarily blinded her enemy, sending it reeling in pain. The angel raised her left arm, the wings upon her gauntlet, forming into a bow.

"Celestial Arrow!"

As she pulled back the bowstring, an arrow of pure light formed. It soared through the air, and pierced straight through the SkullGreymon's forehead. The digimon let loose one last gurgling roar, before scattering into shimmering data.

Hisyarumon lunged forward, biting into his opponent's shoulder. With a growl, the skeletal digimon smashed a free claw into the dragon knocking him aside. Hisyarumon then countered with a pair of golden energy beams.

The SkullGreymon was struck directly, the attack momentarily stunning him. Hisyarumon then took to the air, his form soon wreathed in light.

"Seiryujin!"

The giant living blade appeared in Hisyarumon's place. With a rushing noise, it came down upon the SkullGreymon. It cleaved the ultimate in twain, the two halves of its body bursting into particles.

With a sigh, Hisyarumon's body reverted to Kyokyomon. Gale rushed over to meet him, catching the little dragon in her arms. The pair then looked upward as the strange angel came to land before them.

"Not that we don't appreciate the assist." Gale said. "But who the heck are you?"

The angel smiled, as she was bathed in light. Slowly her form shrunk down, coming to stand only a couple feet tall. The light then dissipated, to reveal the form of a familiar white cat digimon, still wearing a smile.

"Gatomon!" Kyokyomon exclaimed, mouth hanging agape.

"It's been a while." she replied with a small wave.

Kyokyomon leapt from Gale's arms. "You-but how-when did you-"

Gatomon quickly silenced him with an upraised paw. "I'll explain everything once I have everyone together. For now though, I think we should find someplace safe."

"Just follow us." Gale said, pointing down the street. "There's a hospital a little ways from here. We're staying there for now."

"Lead the way."

Trent, and Huckmon rushed down the empty streets. Off in the distance, they could hear the echoing sounds of battle. After traveling a couple of blocks over, they came to a large department store.

With the help of his partner, Trent forced the doors, and motioned everyone inside. They needed no further bidding, practically sprinting into the building. Once everyone was safely inside, Trent turned to the gathered escapees.

"Alright, all of you stay here." he ordered. "We'll be back soon."

"You're just gonna leave us?!" a woman exclaimed.

"I have to go back and help my friends." Trent replied apologetically.

"Just stay hidden. We promise to come back for you." Huckmon assured.

The two took several steps back, Trent raising his digivice. Huckmon was suddenly cocooned in pure light.

"Huckmon digivolve to...BaoHuckmon!"

The group of escapees all gasped in surprise as the dragon appeared. Trent gave them a final wave, and jumped atop his partner's back. BaoHuckmon then took off, bounding down the street with all speed.

With a resounding clang, Dianamon's polearm clashed against Darkdramon's shield. He pushed her away, and thrusted forward with his lance. Dianamon used the haft of her polearm to block the attack, but was still sent flying backward.

ArchMagusmon moved in to flank the cyborg. The crystals around him, hummed with power, before releasing several bolts of arcane energy. Darkdramon kicked up his thruster, dashing to the side. He then fired a pair of spiraling beams from his eyes

The wizard took the attack directly, feeling a tingling pain course through him. As Darkdramon moved in on him, and icy arrow suddenly came in from his right, cutting across his path. He flew back to avoid, and glanceed over to see Dianamon notching another arrow.

"Arrow Of Artemis!"

The arrow was loosed, creating a trail of icy wind, and crystals. Darkdramon locked onto the oncoming projectile, eyes flashing.

"Demon Gaze!"

The arrow, and the twin beams collided mid air, creating an explosion of ice crystals. As it began to dissipate, Darkdramon pointed his lance toward Dianamon. Crackling, black, and blue energy began to gather at its tip. It grew, and grew, as it was fed power directly from Darkdramon's core.

"Dark Roar!"

With a loud boom, the energy was all unleashed. The beam of antimatter energy shifted, forming into the shape of roaring serpentine dragon. The air itself seemed to be burned away, as the blast streaked through the sky.

Dianamon's eyes widened as the attack approached. She quickly rose into the air, avoiding it by a fraction of a second. The dragon of energy continued on its course, impacting into a skyscraper. The energy exploded outward, creating a perfect sphere of black, and blue energy.

When the energy dissipated, the top four floors were missing from the skyscraper. The parts of the building at the edge of the explosion, were rounded, and perfectly smooth. Not a single speck of wreckage or debris could be seen. All the matter within the sphere seemingly annihilated.

ArchMagusmon, and Dianamon gaped at the destruction. The two then slowly turned back to Darkdramon as steam issued off his body. He fired off two eye beams at ArchMagusmon, and followed after it, lance at the ready.

"Pendragon's Seal! Defend!"

The two spiral beams smashed into the barrier, dissipated by it's power. ArchMagusmon held the barrier, as the cyborg charged, readying himself. At the last possible moment, Darkdramon boosted to the right, circling around the barrier. The wizard couldn't react in time, and soon felt the tip of Darkdramon's lance pierce into his shoulder.

"Get away from him!" Dianamon roared, charging toward Darkdramon with her polearm.

Darkdramon turned toward her, firing off a pair of eye beams as she approached. Dianamon couldn't slow down to dodge, and was struck dead. Her body momentarily paralyzed, muscles spasming involuntarily.

The cyborg turned his attentions back to ArchMagusmon. With a wicked grin, he put more pressure on his lance. ArchMagusmon screamed in pain, desperately trying to pry the weapon loose.

BaoHuckmon suddenly came skidding around a nearby corner. Misaki, and Kiko turned in surprise, as the dragon stopped before them. Trent then leapt from atop his back, his sigil shining within his d-brace.

"Sorry I'm late. Go get'em buddy!"

BaoHuckmon nodded, and his body burst into light. The light flew upward, shifting into the form of SaviorHuckmon.

"Meteor Flame!" the dragon called, unleashing a barrage of blue fireballs.

The streams of flaming meteors exploded into Darkdramon side. He growled in annoyance, the impact jostling him in the air. It was all the opening ArchMagusmon needed, letting him raise his staff. The tip began to crackle, as he touched it to the cyborg's chest.

"Mystic Thunder!"

The direct blast of electricity, coursed through Darkdramon's body. He roared in pain, finally removing his lance from the wizard's shoulder. ArchMagusmon wasted no time, and flew backward, gaining as much distance as possible.

"Are you alright?" SaviorHuckmon asked as he neared.

ArchMagusmon held a hand to his wound, hissing through grit teeth. "I should be fine."

"Glad to have you join us." Dianamon said, moving to meet her companions.

"I don't know how much help I'll be." SaviorHuckmon replied. "I can't digivolve to Jesmon right now."

"We need to take what we can get." said ArchMagusmon. "Our enemy is incredibly strong. We've barely been able to scratch him. I think he might even be on the same level as a demon lord."

"If that's true, we need some kind of plan." SaviorHuckmon said. "We won't be able to beat him with raw power."

"What about the exceed change?" Dianamon suggested.

"We still don't quite know how do it on command." ArchMagusmon replied, shaking his head. "Besides, we need to try, and conserve ourselves. Our overall battle strength is already down as it is. But I think I might have something."

"I'm all ears."

"The key is all the energy he builds up when he charges that beam of his. If I can time it right, I should be able to take him out. But I need the two of you to distract him for as long as you can. I'll do the rest."

"Are you done scheming over there?!" Darkdramon shouted. "Because I'm tired of waiting."

"Lets just go with your plan." Dianamon said quickly, as Darkdramon charged his eyes with energy. "We don't have time to come up another one."

SaviorHuckmon nodded in agreement, and he Dianamon rushed toward the mega. The two dodged his twin lasers, and came swinging in with their weapons. Darkdramon caught SaviorHuckmon's arm blade, with his left, while blocking Dianamon with his right. He tossed the knight away by his blade, and knocked Dianamon's weapon aside.

Dianamon did not falter, and countered with a powerful spinning kick. It smashed into Darkdramon's side, making him stagger backward. With a growl he boosted forward with his lance. The other mega attempted a parry, but still took a glancing blow on her side. Her armor cracking beneath the tip of his lance.

As Darkdramon readied another thrust. SaviorHuckmon came flying in behind him. The knight fired barrage of meteors, striking the cyborg in the face. Darkdramon was momentarily blinded, giving Dianamon an opening to strike with a flying kick.

Darkdramon soon righted himself, and bellowed in fury. His eyes flashed, firing a pair beams at Dianamon. One caught her shoulder, peeling away more bits of armor. SaviorHuckmon then came flying in once again, all three of his blades glimmering red.

"Trident Saber!"

Darkdramon was ready for him, raising his shield to block all three blades. "You annoying little pest!"

He backhanded the knight with his shield, knocking him away. Darkdramon then followed up with a spinning tail whip. It smashed into SaviorHuckmon's armor which buckled beneath the pressure. His body then went hurtling backward, and smashing hard into a radio tower.

As his two companions continued to engage, ArchMagusmon closed his eyes. He sent forth his will, contacting his partner. Misaki soon felt his presence, calling out to her through their connection. He was calling for aid.

She focused on it, willing the energy between them to flow stronger. ArchMagusmon felt the surge of energy, and made several signs in the air.

"Pendragon's Seal! Empower!"

The magical circle flashed into existence, hovering up in the sky. With several more signs, ArchMagusmon held the circle in place. He took in a few deep breaths, calling forth another seal just above the other. It appeared in another flash of arcane light. ArchMagusmon began to sweat with effort, as he kept both arcane signs in place.

"Just...one...more." ArchMagusmon groaned, as he made another hand sign.

Darkdramon boosted to the side, as Dianamon loosed an icy arrow. He charged forward, lance at the ready. Dianamon blocked the powerful thrust, but was sent spinning backward by its power. The cyborg's lance began to charge, gathering energy at its tip.

"Dark-"

From down below SaviorHuckmo came rushing in. Using all the speed he could muster, he rammed into Darkdramon. The mega's lance was knocked upward, as the energy was released. The giant blast of dark energy went flying at an angle into the air. Clouds parting in the distance as it went past.

Darkdramon smashed his elbow into the knight knocking the wind out of him. His eyes then flashed, releasing a pair of spiraling beams into his back. SaviorHuckmon quickly plummeted, smashing into the earth, before reverting into Koromon.

Before Darkdramon could finish him, an icy arrow struck his lance. The weapon was quickly encased in ice. Dianamon then came flying in smashing into Darkdramon's chest with a double kick.

Darkdramon struck Dianamon with his lance, smashing the shell of ice. He then fired four spiraling beams from his eyes. Dianamon was quickly paralyzed, entire body convulsing involuntarily. He then sent her flying away with his tail, before turning his attentions to ArchMagusmon

"Whatever your planning, it stops now!" he roared, bringing his lance forward.

High up above him, the third empowering circle was fully formed. ArchMagusmon was straining now, as he raised his staff. Dark clouds then began together in the sky, rumbling with thunder. Dark matter slowly gathered at the tip of Darkdramon's lance, crackling chaotically. As the power was about to reach its peak, ArchMagusmon brought down his staff.

"Mystic Thunder!"

With a flash a bolt of arcane lightning came down from the clouds. It struck the first circle absorbing its power. The bolt then continued on its course growing in size, and power as it passed through all three circles.

The dark matter energy within Darkdramon's energy reached its peak, as the titanic bolt came down. Darkdramon only had a fraction of a second to look upward, before being enveloped by the lightning. Sparks flashed, and electricity crackled along his entire body. The dark matter energy was completely destabilized by the blast, and exploded outward.

A thunderous boom echoed across the city as the energies converged. Misaki, Trent, and Kiko all took cover behind a nearby building. All of them threatened to be blown away by the shock wave, and the wind that followed.

Blue, and black energy merged with the arcane lighting, swirling into a singular mass of chaotic energy. The energy then shrunk in on itself, compressing into a singularity. Finally with a crackle, and a flash, the energy disappeared, leaving no trace of Darkdramon behind.

Darkdramon's partner suddenly convulsed, and fell to the ground in a heap . Her dark digivice let loose a gurgling screech before detaching. It wriggled and writhed, then burst into black particles. From the cloud of data, a digicore, floated upward, its surface marked with the strange sigil.

Trent, Kiko, and Misaki all allowed themselves a sigh of relief. Moments later, Dianamon, and ArchMagusmon floated over to the trio. Koromon lying unconscious in Dianamon's arms. The two megas then landed, reverting to their in training forms.

Kiko moved over to the fallen woman, Moonmon following. With some effort, he lifted her up onto his shoulders, securing her in place.

"Come on, let's get out of here."

His friends nodded in agreement. Trent then scooped up Koromon into his arms, leading his companions to the escapees hiding place.

Author's Notes:

Hey guys would have posted this yesterday, but I was celebrating my birthday. Anyway, couple interesting things to talk about. Not the least of which being the return of Gatomon! And with a shiny new form too. To those who have been keeping up with Battle for Nexus, this won't be as big of a surprise. Just like with LadyDevimon, I wanted to do a different design for Angewomon. I want to make her feel more like a Valkyrie or and angelic knight, rather than a woman in gaudy lingerie. I also changed the names of two of Darkdramon's attacks. Since they didn't sound quite right to me, and so I tweaked them a little bit. Anyway guys thats it for now! Catch you all next time!
