Chapter 55: Taking Off

The time passed by quickly before Gwendolyn heard Dave knocking at the door. She had decided to lie down for a bit to get her bearings together and hadn't even noticed the clock. Opening the door, she smiled at Dave, who chose to wear some black dress pants and a red shirt with a black jacket. She couldn't help but look him up and down before letting him inside the room.

"So are you ready?" he asked. Gwendolyn nodded her head as she went to go grab the bag. Getting a firm grip on the handle, she lifted up the bag and followed Dave's lead downstairs. Before they were to leave, he offered to get her something to drink, which she accepted. It didn't take long before they heard the door open and Patricia dragging a huge bag behind her. Dave couldn't help but laugh. "You really don't travel light do you Pat?"

All she could do was glare at him as she took a seat next to Gwendolyn, getting her own drink. "I have to make sure that I have everything I need of course. So are you guys all set to go?" They both nodded.

"I'm so happy that you are coming with us Patricia." Gwendolyn said happily.

"Well, since this is your first time going to Japan, I thought I would pitch along in case you needed another female companion." Gwendolyn smiled, excited about what was to come. After finishing up the drinks, the trio was ready to go. "I'll go bring my car around guys." Patricia took off to park her car closer to the house. Dave noticed that Gwendolyn's smile didn't fade away in the slightest.

"It looks like you are really going to have some fun with that great attitude." Gwendolyn turned her sparkling eyes towards him, which cause his heart to flutter slightly.

"Uh huh." Gwendolyn began to reach for her bag as Dave exited the kitchen. He saw what she was doing and placed his large hand over her smaller one.

"Don't worry about that, I'll grab it for you." Gwendolyn rose back up to a standing position.

"Are you sure?" Dave answered her by tossing the bag over his shoulder as if it was nothing.

"I'm sure." Gwendolyn couldn't help but noticed how his muscles began to contract from what he was doing. She couldn't stop the small blush from coming to her cheeks. Gwendolyn followed closely behind Dave outside. As she stepped out into the cool air, she noticed that the sky was beginning to darken and change color, making its transition to the night. Dave began to pack everything into the trunk of Patricia's car when he noticed her looking behind him.

Following her gaze, he saw what she was looking at. "Go on, I'll get the car started." Taking their separate ways, Dave walked over to Gwendolyn whose head was tilted back. Standing next to her and doing the same, he gaze up with her. "What are you looking at?" Gwendolyn's heart skipped a beat at how quickly he was close to her.

"How does the sky change color like that?" She put her head back down and wiped away some tears that began to spring up. "I'm sorry, I must sound so stupid asking something like that." Dave lowered his head too and looked at her.

"Don't apologize. You are just curious about things is all. "He gently petted the top of her head. "Come on, let's have some fun." He grabbed her hand in his and led her to the car." You'll sit in the front with Patricia and I'll sit…" his movements halted as he felt Gwendolyn stop in her tracks. Dave looked at her quizzically.

"I want to sit with you," she blurted out as she gave a squeeze of her hand. "That is if you don't mind." Dave shook his head and walked the rest of the way with her, stopping by the driver's side to let Patricia know that Gwendolyn was going to be sitting in the back with him.

"I don't mind that at all as long as you are comfortable with that Gwendolyn." Dave opened the back door for her and she slid inside, behind Patricia. Dave closed her door and ran around to the other side, getting in as well. "Okay, is everything all set?"

"Yup, let's go Pat." Gwendolyn couldn't help but let out a 'yay' as Patricia pulled the car out of the driveway and made her way to the airport. After being on the road for a few minutes, Gwendolyn spoke up. "So you guys have been in Japan before right, tell me what it's like." She truly sounded like a small child going to the amusement park for the first time.

Dave couldn't help but smile at her. "It's a wonderful and lively place, especially around this time of year." Patricia continued to keep her eyes on the road as she contributed as well.

"The definite sight to see are the cherry blossoms when they are in bloom. I heard of a myth where if you join hands and a petal lands on them, you and the person with you are meant to be together. That's how I found my husband." Gwendolyn leaned forward as Patricia gave her a better view of the gold wedding band of her left ring finger.

"It's beautiful, how long have you've been married?"

"For about 20 years almost." Gwendolyn giggled as she expressed her congrats to Patricia. Dave just sat back as the silent observer. He couldn't help but wonder about the myth himself. He was soon drawn out of his thoughts by Gwendolyn shaking him.

"What about you Dave?"

"It didn't last long. That's all you need to know," he said a bit coldly. Patricia glared at him and he quickly felt bad as he saw the tears beginning to appear. Dave laughed lightly, trying to ease the tension that suddenly rose up. "Sorry about snapping at you. I just don't like talking about it, especially when Patricia probably has better memories to share." The conversation ended there as Patricia and Gwendolyn began to grow their friendship. After getting off the highway, it didn't take long before Patricia pulled the car into the airport parking lot.

After finding a good spot, Patricia turned off the car and everyone got out. Gwendolyn could hear the distant sounds of planes landing and taking off. She watch as they hurled down the runway before the lift carried it away towards its destination. Dave went to the trunk and grabbed both of their bags. "What was that all about?" he heard Patricia asked. "You didn't have to act like such a jerk you know. She was just curious. I know you are probably sick of hearing this but she really cares about you and you have to understand that she trusts you."

Patricia put her hand on Dave's shoulder. "We'll help her somehow, her mind is basically starting over. Don't make her become afraid of you" Dave nodded his head, knowing that Patricia was right.

"I guess I'm still upset about what happened with Jake." Dave put the bags down and watched as Gwendolyn looked at the planes. "I told her that I was going to have to leave soon." Dave continued on explaining the phone call he got from work. "What scares me the most is that she wanted me to train her some self defense."

Patricia knew the dilemma that Dave was going to be put through. "I'm sorry that this had to happen at the worse time. I'll look after her while you're gone." Dave couldn't help but smile because he knew that Patricia would say something like that. "How about we get going? We'll figure out what to do while we're on the plane to pass the time." Dave grabbed the bags while Patricia went to go get Gwendolyn, who was still looking towards the airport.

"What took you guys so long? I want to go already" she said excitedly. The trio headed into the busy airport where the rush of reaching one's flight hung in the air.

"I'll go get the tickets. How about you guys just wait for me by gate 7G?"

"How do you already know where to go?"

"Cause they put us to the same gate when I would go with Dave. I guess they just wanted it to be simple is all. Okay, see you guys soon." Everyone parted and Gwendolyn followed behind Dave. As things began to get a bit more hectic, Gwendolyn found herself falling further behind until she couldn't see him anymore. She stopped in her tracks, her heart pounding in her ears. The people continued to walk by, not even giving her a second glance as she thought about what to do. She started to wonder if this was all a trick after all. Maybe he really was trying to get rid of me. Then that would me my feelings for were… She suddenly felt someone touch her hand. She followed it to find

Dave looking worriedly at her. "You alright?" Dave had been looking for her when he didn't see her behind him. "How about we try this?" Dave grabbed her hand in his. "That way we won't lose each other, okay?" Gwendolyn was so glad. She knew that her ideas were stupid to think of. I was scared is all. That's why I thought that. That would never happen, right?" Gwendolyn looked into his eyes and found her answer. They continued to walk towards the gate that Patricia told them, Gwendolyn gripping Dave's hands a bit tighter to make sure she didn't lose him. Passing by more people, they reached a checkpoint that they needed to pass.

"Okay Gwendolyn, this is just a security precaution where they just want to make sure we don't have things that don't belong on the plane. Just take off your belt and walk through the metal detector." Dave instructed. Gwendolyn found it strange to get through the checkpoint, but she did without any problems along with Dave. She had noticed that he didn't bring their bags. "They'll take them on the plane for us, don't worry about it." They found some seats near the gate and sat next to each other. Even though they were not going anywhere, she didn't want to let him go. She was afraid to, especially after the unfortunate news that he had to go back to work. Her very delicate mind had been unaware of what was going on around her.

Luckily for her, Dave was right there by her side. What's going to happen though when he leaves? How am I going to be able to go on without being able to see him as much? This is really starting to hurt my head again. Gwendolyn took her free hand and brought it to her head, trying to see if she could shake the feelings out of it. At this motion, Dave became increasingly worried, knowing that this was happening a lot lately. He knew that something was going on inside her head and he was definitely worried for her health.

"Do you want something to drink?"

"No th..ank y..ou. I-I'll be alri-ight." She couldn't even manage to get a sentence out with stumbling a bit. She placed her head on his shoulder to try and get her bearings. "I'll be fine Dave. It's ju-just that I'm still not 100 percent, you know." When she looked at him, she could see the worry he had for her and at that moment she felt a sense of something that she couldn't put her finger on just yet. The way he was looking at her made her face very warm and Gwendolyn wondered if she really was sick.

Before she get the chance to tell him, he had spotted Patricia heading their way. "Okay guys, I've got three tickets for first class. Here's yours Gwendolyn." She gladly accepted the piece of paper from her and then Dave took his. Gwendolyn followed behind Dave and Patricia as they handed their tickets over to the people. When it was her turn, she did the same, getting a smile from the female attendant. Walking through the door, she found herself in a long, small tunnel that led to the door of the plane. As she stepped through the large white door, Gwendolyn found herself being greeted by several of the flight attendants who began to escort her to her seat.

As she walked by, she looked around at all of the people that were on the flight as well, surprised that it was so roomy. Unfortunately she found herself so distracted with her new surroundings that she accidentally bumped into a guy in front of her. "Watch where you're going you dumb bitch" the man yelled as he tried to fix up his suit.

"I'm so sorry" Gwendolyn said, trying to apologize to the guy.

"I don't want to fucking hear it. Just get your stupid ass going before I…" The man stopped talking as he felt something behind him. Gwendolyn couldn't help but smile to herself as the man turned his terrified eyes to Dave.

"Now I believe that the young lady here apologize to you. Now I would like to think that you have the curiosity to accept it and accept before I try to convince you to do so." It didn't take long before the man took his seat, shaking in his $400 shoes.

"Come on Miss, let's you seated." The flight attendant continued to escort Gwendolyn and Dave towards the back of the plane where she pulled back the curtain that separated first class from coach. It didn't take long before they spotted Patricia a few rows back. "Here you are. We will be taking off in a few minutes so please get seated and prepared" the flight attendant said politely before heading back through the curtain.

"So now that you guys finally decided to show up, who wants to sit near the window?" Dave looked over at Gwendolyn who started back at him. "You…don't mind?" He shook his head as he led her to the seat.

"I think that you should see the takeoff first hand is all." Gwendolyn gave him a soft smile as she sat down near the window. She began to sink down into the comfortable padding of the seat, feeling herself relax a bit. Dave took the seat next to her while Patricia sat near the aisle. Just as they got settle, they could hear the intercom turn on.

"Hello ladies and gentlemen. This is your captain speaking. The 4:00pm flight to Tokyo, Japan will be taking off shortly. Please direct your attention to the front where the crew will instruct you on the proper safety procedure." The intercom shut off and the crew took their position as they introduced the different procedures including what to do in case of a crash and how to put on the seat-belt. The tutorial had just ended before the intercom started up again.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seat-belts as we will begin our accent in 5 minutes." As they were preparing for liftoff, Dave could hear a sound of annoyance next to him. As he looked over, he could see that Gwendolyn was having a bit of trouble with her seat-belt and hear her muttering to herself.

"Damn thing. They make it look easy enough. Maybe I'm just an idiot." He couldn't help but smile at her innocence again.

"It's really not as hard as it looks." Gwendolyn looked at him, blushing slightly at the fact that he heard her."Let me help you with that." His words cause Gwendolyn's heart to skip as she remembered the illusion she had at Jake's house. She watched as he reached over, placing his hands on top of hers and guiding the two parts together. He pulled away from her, a small smile on his face. "See, it's not that…" he never got the chance to finish his sentence as Gwendolyn lifted her lips to meet his in a soft kiss. She pulled away quickly and whispered a quiet thank you before turning her face towards the window, her cheeks red with a blush.

Patricia saw everything but decided to keep to herself and let Dave and Gwendolyn have their privacy. Dave's mind was still reeling after what she had just done. He took her hand in his and gave it a small squeeze, which she returned gratefully. The intercom in front of them came to life once again. "Welcome, ladies and gentleman, to our 12 flight to Tokyo. We will be taking off shortly so please make sure that you are seated and your seat-belts are securely fastened. On behalf of the crew, we wish you an enjoyable flight." As soon as the intercom was silenced, Gwendolyn felt the plane as it began to rumble to life.

The rumbling of power that she felt reminded her of Dave's Mercedes. As she looked out towards the window, she watched as the plane began its decent down the runway. As the plane was reaching its top speed, the Gs began to push against everyone's chest. She could see the plane beginning to pull away from the ground. She couldn't help but be amazed at the sight. As she continued to watch from the window, Dave was watching her reactions towards the new experience. He then looked at Patricia and they smiled together.

As the plane carried its passengers higher and higher, Gwendolyn saw the ground shrinking smaller and smaller. After a few more minutes, Gwendolyn felt the weight being lifted off her chest. The intercom came to life once again to announce that it was alright for everyone to move around since they reached the cruising altitude. Patricia, Dave, and Gwendolyn unbuckled their belts, stretching out a bit. The flight attendant who escorted Gwendolyn earlier came by them to offer drinks.

After getting their drinks, Gwendolyn's eyes drifted back to the window. She couldn't help but look at each of the clouds as the passed by. She finished up her drink before handing it back to the flight attendant. Gwendolyn sighed to herself as she watched Patricia and Dave talk like friends would. Gwendolyn felt a bit left out, believing that she could never be like that with him, not after all the trouble she caused. This thought caused her to sigh to herself again, becoming even more depressed.

Dave couldn't help but hear the noise himself and finished his talk with Patricia. When he looked at Gwendolyn, he saw that her eyes were down, looking at her fingers. He knew that something was wrong with her and wanted to find out at that moment. Without a second thought, he gently grabbed Gwendolyn's wrist and began to lead her away. Letting Patricia know that they would be right back, he headed towards the back where the restrooms were. Looking around to make sure no one was there, he jumped into the room, along with Gwendolyn.

After closing the door, he turned the switch to lock the door then turned his attention back to her. "Gwendolyn…what's wrong?" His voice just seem to ooze with the care and attention that she was use to by now and couldn't help but walk into his arms.

"I just still feel so alone" she said softly, nuzzling her face against his chest.

"I wish you would tell me when you feel that baby. I don't want you to feel like that ever again." Gwendolyn couldn't help but smile when he called her baby, wondering what was the reason for the little name of affection.

"I guess it's just something I'm use to." Dave pulled her back and placed a soft kiss on her lips.

"You don't ever have to feel like that with me, okay?" I wish I could believe you she thought, remembering what was going to happen when they got back. Placing a kiss on her lips, Dave opened the door and led them back to their seats, avoiding any sort of unwanted attention.

"Are you guys alright?" Patricia asked as she watched them take their seats.

"Everything is just fine." He looked back at Gwendolyn, who looked like she was beginning to get tired. Without even waiting, he wrapped his arms across her shoulders and placed her head on his shoulder to use as a pillow. It didn't take long before he heard her soft, even breathing. As Gwendolyn felt the rumbling of the plane, she could feel her mind beginning to ripple as it drifted into the dream once again.

A/N: So yeah, I have to explain something. I had in fact lost inspiration for this story for quite some time now. I'm sure you've noticed from the lack of updates. My new love has been the show known as Person of Interest. Surprisingly, while I was on vacation in July, my mused returned as well as the nagging feeling that I couldn't let this story go. Because of that, I have written the rest of the chapters and will in fact be uploading and finishing this soon.
