Chapter Forty Four
Blaine was happily playing with Spot, who had seemed to grow twice his size in the week or so that they had had him, in the nearest park to them. Throwing a rubber ball, Spot was having a great time running after it and catching it, his little tail wagging nineteen to the dozen as he did so. He had just thrown the ball when his phone kicked into life, playing Bitch by Alanis Morisette. It could only be one person. Sebastian.
He pressed to take the call, greeting his friend as he did so. "Hey Seb what's up? School gotten boring or something?" Blaine had always known that Sebastian would get bored now that all of his close friends had graduated. As far as he could tell the only seniors left in glee were him and Unique and they had about as much in common as a wasp does with a rhinoceros. In other words, they had nothing in common.
"Haha, you know it's frightfully dull around here with no one to flirt with, aka you Blaine. I guess you and the blonde stripper are building a huge love nest as we speak?" Sebastian drawled out dryly and Blaine couldn't help but smile .He did miss Sebastian very much. He seemed to bring everyone back down to reality with a bump. He grounded them all with his sarky remarks and his witty one liners. Blaine had kinda missed that. Seb was right, he and Sam were in a love bubble and so were Jeff and Nick. "Actually Blaine, I need your help. I'm the captain of glee this year but none of the newbies seem to be taking me seriously and for once I'm stumped as to how to get them to follow me. It's never been this hard before. They're like wild, savage animals. Seriously. They almost clawed my insides out in the first week. Even Mr Shue can't seem to stop them from running amok. I wouldn't ask since I know you're busy and everything but I was kinda hoping that-"
"-That I'd come back for a visit? Sure Seb. I'll come back for a few days, no problem. I'll see if I can sort them out for you, but no promises. They might hate me more than you." Blaine chuckled to himself, thinking of Sebastian sitting with a bunch of zoo animals in the old Warblers common area., Mr Shue trying to cage them.
"It's not funny Blaine. I'm being totally serious, they're a bunch of little, whiny bitches the lot of them, and they all seem to think they know best. Kitty's claws were out the other day, that's how bad it's gotten. If I could I'd give them all a slap round their smug, arrogant little faces. They're fu-"
"Ok, I get it! I'll be back by this afternoon how about that? If I can bring any of the others I will. I'll see you later, ok?"
Seb sighed on the other end and Blaine had the feeling he was trying to calm himself down. He did sound quite tired Blaine had to give him that, he had clearly not been sleeping all that well which was unusual for Sebastian. Normally he could sleep through anything. This had to be serious. "Thank B. I'll see you later."
"Bye Seb."
"Love ya B." Blaine smiled to himself as he pressed the button to end the call. It looked like he was going back home.
"You won't be gone long right?" Sam asked forlornly as he patted Spot's head absently. He was watching Blaine pack his small carry on suitcase which meant he really was only staying for a couple of days but still Sam hadn't been without him for some time now and he knew that the bed would feel cold without his little angel there beside him. "I would go with you but I have to finish my latest piece, it's in on Friday..."
Blaine laughed lowly to himself and came over to where Sam was perched on the bed, cupping Sam's face with his smooth, gentle hands. Sam sighed, he was not going to get to feel Blaine's touch for what would seem like an age again after today. "I'll be back before you know it." Blaine leaned down to kiss him deeply and Sam hummed at the feeling of butterflies that always appeared when Blaine did that. "Oh Sammy, I love you so much." He leant his forehead against Sam's and they stayed in the position for what Sam wished was forever but was probably only really a minute tops.
"I love you more." Sam whispered out as Blaine went back to packing the last of his things.
"Not possible honey." Blaine told him, zipping his case up and placing it on the floor. "Now give me another kiss. One that will keep me going till I get back." Dropping Spot to the floor, Sam got up and pulled his boyfriend to him, kissing as though it was the last kiss they would ever have with each other.
Nick buckled himself into the aisle seat, Blaine beside him, opening his book to carry on reading it. Curious Nick sneaked a peak at what his friend was reading. 'The Final Empire' by Brandon Sanderson. Nick shrugged. He had never heard of it or the author before, but then Blaine read many fantasy books and Nick didn't really go in for that type of thing. "It's really good. You should read it Nick. Trust me, if there is only ever one fantasy author that you ever read in your life it should be this guy. He's a genius."
Nick smiled at Blaine's passionate speech. It was enough to make him think about it at the very least. "Is Sam going to miss out? Do you read it to him?" Nick knew about Sam's quite severe dyslexia and that Blaine tended to read things to him. It worked for them and so Nick thought that there was nothing wrong with that at all. They could be doing worse things with their time. Blaine chuckled and shook his head.
"I love Sammy very much but I'm not sure he'd get all the intricacies of these books. There is a lot going on in them. I think it might be a bit too much for him to understand." Nick nodded. Sam, bless his heart was not the smartest thing on the planet, but that wasn't to say he was stupid either. He was very smart when it came to people. Smarter than Blaine probably. He could read them like nobodies business and his art was inspiring. Just because he wasn't academic didn't mean he wasn't clever in his own way.
"This is for you then." Blaine nodded.
"Yeah. I tell Sam about them afterwards. That seems to be enough for him. I think the thickness of the book scares him off. It would probably take me years to read them all to him." The pilot came over the intercom at that point, telling them that their flight was about to get underway. Nick made sure his seatbelt was on and leant back, closing his eyes for a short nap. It was a short flight after all. He left Blaine to enter his fantasy world. He seemed quite enraptured by it after all.
Maybe one day he would ask what it was all about...
Sebastian stood anxiously awaiting his friends plane to touch down. It was any second now and he found he could hardly wait for them to arrive. He was in serious need of some friend time. Unique was, well Unique and the juniors were alright to hang out with sometimes but they got a little dull after a while. Jeff's little sister was actually a breath of fresh air and possibly the only person he really, truly liked in the whole club. He knew that was harsh but Sebastian couldn't afford to not be a harsh kinda guy. He knew what he liked and knew what he wanted. School was boring and he wanted out as soon as was possible. It sucked and he was so over it it hurt. Just speaking to Blaine again bought life back into his weary, colourless life. Blaine was his best friend really and Seb missed the banter. Blaine was smart enough for a comeback every time. The new kids didn't get him or his witty remarks, they simply talked trash about pretty much everyone. Sebastian hated them with a fiery passion. As he heard the announcement for the plane from New York touching down he started walking towards the terminal exit, hopping up and down and straining his neck to try and spot his friends. When he saw the all to familiar wild, lion like curls of Blaine's head bobbing up and down he called out to his friend, who stopped and looked in his direction a broad beam coming across his face as he waved and crossed over to Sebastian, Nick following closely behind.
"Hey Seb, it's so good to see you." Blaine gave him a bear hug with Seb gratefully returned with much zeal. He was so happy to see his best friend that he started to cry a little as he held him in his arms. "What's wrong Seb?" Blaine pulled away, concern written all over his face, his hand cupping his friends cheek.
Seb laughed at the sheer absurdity of what was happening. He never cried, he never got emotional at all but here he was blubbing his eyes out. "I just miss you guys so much. You especially B."
"Aww, you're such a sweetheart, aren't you?" Blaine kissed him on the cheek and took his hand in his own, guiding them all out of the airport. It seemed the boys had only bought carry on luggage with them which made Seb's heart sink somewhat. It meant that they weren't staying, which he knew but that didn't mean it didn't hurt all the same.
"So no White Chocolate then hmm?" He teased the smaller of the two boys and Nick sniggered qat the remark. God knows what they got up to between the lot of them. "I'm surprised Blaine, I heard he was like a limpet, you couldn't get rid of." He grinned unabashedly to steer the conversation away from him.
"Hardy ha ha Seb. My limpet has an art piece he needs to finish and submit by Friday. Thanks for asking and before you make any mouth and sucking jokes I'll let you know my boyfriend is very proficient in that particular area thank you very much."Seb shook with laughter at the serious tone that Blaine had discussed that with.
"Oh Blaine, I'm so glad you're back. I have truly missed this banter." Blaine punched him playfully in the arm as they reached Seb's car and they all climbed in, ready to go off to Dalton Academy and meet the newest members of the glee club.
Blaine rolled his eyes and groaned when he heard his phone go off and the ring tone was the song from Beauty and the Beast. Sam was always changing his ring tone on Blaine's phone to something far sappier than the one before. Originally it had been the Star Wars theme because of how much they both loved it but now it had been so many things that Blaine couldn't have named them all.
"Seriously Blaine? Really? Have you lost all semblance of manhood?" Seb arched his brow up and Blaine sighed.
"He keeps changing it. I've taken to letting him, I can't be bothered to try and change it back any more." He pressed the button to take the call, putting his back to his friends. They had all only minutes before arrived at Dalton and were in the hallway heading towards glee. "Hey hun, you ok?"
"Yeah, I just wanted to make sure that you got there safely is all." Sam stated in such a pathetic voice that Blaine's heart ached for him. He was way too cute sometimes that Blaine couldn't help it. He really was a large puppy dog.
"I'm fine Sammy. I'm about to go to glee. Can I call you later?" He asked, chewing his bottom lip hoping that Sam wouldn't be too upset with that compromise.
He heard a tremendous sigh over the voice. "Video call me. I want to see your face. I miss you so much already." Sam whimpered out, sounding sad that his conversation was getting cut short.
Blaine understood all too well what that felt like. Kurt had been like that with him when he had moved out to New York and they had still been together. It had felt painful, hurtful and he had felt so lonely that he had ended up in the arms of a practical stranger. "Oh Sammy. I wish I could stand here all day and talk with you. I really do. You are way more important to me then those stupid kids in there. But I made a promise to a friend remember? I miss you more than you'll ever know. I love you Samwise Gamgee and I promise to call you later."
"I love you too Frodo Baggins. See you later?" Sam had perked up from those few comments and it gave Blaine sense of pride and warmth that his words could help Sam that much.
"See you later. Love you."
"Love you more." Sam called out and then ended the call abruptly before Blaine could say that it wasn't possible. It was like a game with the two of them. Who got to say it last. Sam had won this round.
Seb hovered with Nick by the doorway to glee, a look of slight disgust on his face. "God could you two be any more vomit worthy? Come on and stop mooning over him. You'll be in his arms and his dick will be in your ass soon enough."
Blaine's jaw dropped and Nick burst out into loud guffaws as he pointed at his friend. "I can't believe you just said that Seb!" Blaine hissed out. "Mr Shue probably just heard that." His cheeks warmed as he strode past his friend and into the glee club's practice room, ready to meet the newest recruits.
Mr Shue's brows arched sharply as he heard Sebastian's comments to whoever it was outside and when a blushing and yet fuming Blaine walked in Will couldn't keep a straight face. At least now he understood Sebastian's meaning. Not that he condoned such talk of course. However accurate he may have been.
"Blaine!" Ryder had called out happily, climbing up from his spot on the floor and picking Blaine up into a huge bear hug as the others that knew him got up to say their greetings. Well, if anyone could put these kids in their place it would be Blaine. None of them had half the talent he does. Will waited patiently for everyone to stop greeting each other before intruding. "Ok, ok everyone settle down." He waited for the members to take their seats again, Seb perching on the edge of a sofa which Grace was sitting in as she waved again at Nick and Blaine. "So for everyone who doesn't know these are two of our national winners from last year, Blaine Anderson and Nick Duval." They got a smattering of applause, one of the boys, Justin, just yawned and another, Chad played with his phone. Will sighed inwardly. Would nothing get these kids to listen?
"Why should we care what these old fogeys did in the past My Shue? They're relics." Justin, the newest member and grade A jerk that loved to make sure everyone knew it and that he was the biggest jock around, exclaimed sounding bored.
"Yeah, they don't exactly fill me with confidence." Scarlet exclaimed, in her smallest skirt possible, twirling her hair and batting her eyelashes at Justin, who only had eyes for Grace.
"Seriously?" Nick whispered to Blaine, who shrugged and started towards the piano. Will smiled smugly. Blaine was going to get them to listen with his voice. The only other person who would have been able to do this would have been Rachel. Possibly Mercedes.
He brought up the cover and cracked his fingers, not bothering to say anything to any of them as he started his song. Perfect. Something powerful, something that would make them listen.
There's a fire starting in my heart,
Reaching a fever pitch, it's bringing me out the dark.
Finally I can see you crystal clear,
Go 'head and sell me out and I'll lay your shit bare.
See how I leave with every piece of you,
Don't underestimate the things that I will do.
There's a fire starting in my heart,
Reaching a fever pitch,
And it's bringing me out the dark.
The new kids slowly turned, gawking at Blaine as he carried on playing Adele at them pitch perfect. They didn't have anything to say now Will expected. Not even Justin.
The scars of your love remind me of us,
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all.
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless,
I can't help feeling,
We could have had it all.
The older member joined in with the background lyrics as Blaine started in on the Chorus and Wills' smile got larger as he saw some of the new members twitch to join in.
You're gonna wish you never had met me
Rolling in the deep,
Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
You're gonna wish you never had met me
And you played it to the beat.
ears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep
Baby, I have no story to be told
But I've heard one on you
And I'm gonna make your head burn
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Make a home down there
As mine sure won't be shared
You're gonna wish you never had met me
The scars of your love remind me of us
Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
You're gonna wish you never had met me
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep
I can't help feeling
We could have had it all
You're gonna wish you never had met me
Rolling in the deep
Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
You're gonna wish you never had met me
And you played it, to the beat
Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
But you played it, with a beating
Throw your soul through every open door (woah)
Count your blessings to find what you look for (woah)
Turn my sorrow into treasured gold (woah)
You'll pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow (woah)
Will saw some of the new members start to join in, smile coming over there faces as they snag in harmony with each other and Will clapped his hands together as he watched with joy. Blaine had done it. He had achieved the impossible. He had started to make them a team.
You're gonna wish you never had met me
We could have had it all
Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep
We could have had it all
You're gonna wish you never had met me
It all, it all, it all
Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep
We could have had it all
You're gonna wish you never had met me
Rolling in the deep
Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
You're gonna wish you never had met me
But you played it
You played it
You played it
You played it to the beat.
The last key finished and Blaine turned to them all. "So that's what glee is all about. Being a team, if you're not interested then you might as well leave now." Will looked around as the new members murmured with each other as to what they were going to do. None of them left. Blaine had made hi point.
"Right, so what are we singing for sectionals then?" Blaine asked, crossing his arms and legs and looking over expectantly at Will. He silently thanked the boy with his eyes and Blaine gave the briefest of nods.
Clapping his hands together Will addressed the now interested looking group. It had been so simple, Will hadn't quite believed it. If only he had gotten Blaine in earlier. "Right then, song selection..."
Sebastian came off stage after having won sectionals, coming over to hug both Nick and Blaine who had stuck around and help bring the team into some form of a team. Thank God. They had been geniuses and had taken no nonsense from anyone. Seb had missed that so much. He only hoped that it wouldn't revert back to form after they were gone.
"Thank you so much guys. Really. They totally sucked at the beginning of the week. Now look, a trophy!"
Blaine chuckled. "You earned it Seb. For putting up with that for so long."
"I miss you guys like crazy." He told them a lump starting to form in his throat with he desperately tried to gulp down so the tears wouldn't come again.
"Aww Seb, we miss you too. You are coming up to New York for Thanksgiving, no buts." Nick told him, wagging his finger and Blaine imitated him making Seb burst into tears whilst laughing at the same time.
"You can count on it."
Song used: Adele – Rolling in the Deep.
