When they woke up on New Year's Day, she slipped out of bed. She slid into a pair of sweat pants and a tank top. She went to her daughter who she could hear talking on the monitor. She smiled when she walked into the room. Her boys were lounging on their baby sister's floor. She stepped across the two sleeping boys to get to her daughter. Sofia smiled up at her when she saw her. Dani lifted her daughter from the crib and changed her before sitting in the rocking chair to feed her. Neither boy woke while the baby was eating. Dani just shook her head. She was glad that her boys were very excited about having a little sister. They were very protective of their baby sister.
While she was feeding her daughter, she heard her husband moving down the hall. He walked by the room in a pair of sweats and no shirt. He glanced over as he walked by and stopped when he saw her. He smiled when he saw the boys on the floor. He leaned on the doorframe.
"Pancakes for breakfast?" he asked.
"You cooking?" she asked, smiling at him.
"I can."
"Then sure babe,"
He chuckled. He turned to leave the room. She moved her daughter to burp her. Then she got up and left the room. She moved to the living room. She put her daughter on her belly with a few toys in front of her. She sat on the couch to give her daughter some time on her belly.
"Babe," Happy called from the kitchen.
"What's up?" she asked, getting up from the couch.
She walked into the kitchen to see what he needed.
"What do you want with these pancakes?" he asked.
"Whatever you want to make," she said.
"That doesn't help me at all."
She laughed. He moved over to where she was and kissed her.
"How bout cheesy scrambled eggs, bacon, and hash browns?" he asked.
"Sounds delicious," she smiled, kissing his lips again.
"All right."
She heard movement down the hall.
"One of the boys are up," she said.
She went to see which one it was. She smiled when she saw her youngest son. He lay down on the floor in front of his sister and started talking to her. She leaned against the door frame and watched him for a few minutes. He had been enamored with his sister since the day she had come home from the hospital.
"Good morning, handsome boy," she said.
"Hi mommy," Dominic grinned, rolling onto his back on the carpet.
"Did you sleep well?"
"Yeah."
She smiled. He got up from the floor.
"Where daddy?" he asked.
"Daddy is making breakfast," she said.
His little eyes widened and he ran for the kitchen. She chuckled. Dominic loved his food. She checked on her infant who was getting fussy on the floor.
"Are you over tummy time, princess?" she smiled, picking the baby up.
She put her in the swing so she could go wake Donavan up. He was all curled up on Sofia's bedroom floor. She shook her head.
"Baby boy, it's time to get up," she said.
He rolled onto his belly and stretched.
"Come on baby, daddy's making breakfast," she said.
He sat up, rubbing his face. He looked more and more like his father every day. He got up and followed her down the hall. She walked into the kitchen to see how her husband was doing on getting breakfast done. She walked up behind him and slid her arms around him. He put one hand on her arms.
"How's it going in here?" she asked.
"Almost done," he replied.
"Good. You have some hungry boys at the table."
"Yeah?"
He turned slightly and looked at his boys who were sitting there staring at him.
"Hey sleepy heads," he said.
Donavan growled at him causing Happy to chuckle. Dominic was more of a morning person than his brother was. Dani smiled at her boys. They were too much like their dad some days. She hated mornings when they were both grumpy. Dominic had a mean streak that was just like his father. It could make her crazy when all three of them were in a bad mood.
Sofia's cry from the living room reminded them that she was there. Dani walked into the living room and took her daughter from the swing.
"Heaven forbid you be part of the conversation, huh?" she asked her infant.
The little girl calmed instantly. The phone rang. Dani grabbed it as she walked into the kitchen with the baby in one arm.
"Hello," she said.
"Good morning, is this Mrs. Lowman?" a voice asked.
"It is,"
"This is Nurse Haskle from Crawford's Nursing Home,"
"What can I do for you?"
"I am calling to inform you that we have transferred Rosa Lowman to the hospital."
"Is everything ok?"
"She was complaining of feeling ill and we sent her as a precaution."
"All right, which hospital?"
"Bakersfield Memorial,"
"Thank you."
Dani hung up the phone. Happy was staring at her.
"Lets get eating, we gotta get going," she said.
"What's going on?" he asked.
"They moved your mother to the hospital."
"What's wrong?"
Happy was instantly worried.
"They said she was complaining that she felt ill so they sent her as a precaution," she said, trying to keep her voice low so she didn't scare the kids.
"What hospital?" he asked.
"Memorial," she replied.
He nodded. She walked out of the kitchen. She dialed Jax's number.
"What's up?" he asked, sounding half asleep.
"Hey, can you watch the kids for Hap and I please?" she asked.
"Yeah sure, what's going on?"
"Hap's mom is in the hospital. We want to go up and see what's going on,"
"All right, we'll be over in a little bit."
"Nah, we can bring them to you. They need out of the house for a bit,"
"All right."
She hung up and walked back into the kitchen. Happy looked at her. He had just placed plates in front of both of his boys. She nodded. She walked down the hall with her daughter. Happy walked behind her. She went into their daughter's room.
"We'll take her with us," he said.
She nodded. She got her daughter dressed and ready to leave the house. She put her in the swing again and went to the bedroom.
"Babe, you need to come eat," Happy said.
"I will, I want to get dressed first. That way I can get the boys dressed after they eat their breakfast," she said.
He sighed. She was just as worried about his mother as he was. He walked back down the hall to the kitchen. The boys were still eating. She quickly got dressed in some jeans and a tank top. She pulled her long hair up in a ponytail and headed down the hall. She walked into the kitchen and sat down to eat some breakfast. Happy put his plate in the sink and went to get himself dressed.
"Come on boys, you are going to go play at Uncle Jax's house for a bit today," she said.
"With Abel and Thomas?" Donavan asked.
She nodded. He smiled. She washed up the plates and the pans that Happy had used to cook their breakfast. She took the boys down the hall to get dressed. They dropped the boys off with Jax a half hour later and headed up to the hospital. Happy carried the infant seat in his hands. They walked up to the information desk.
"Can I help you?" the woman asked.
Happy started to open his mouth but stopped when Dani put her hand on his arm.
"We received a call from Crawford Nursing home, that Rosa Lowman was moved here this morning," she said.
The woman checked a few things on the computer.
"Room 3172," the woman said.
"Thank you," Dani replied.
Happy glared at the woman as they walked away. Dani linked her arm through her husband's and pulled him toward the elevator. He shifted the infant seat in his hand and sighed. She hit the call button for the elevator. They stood there waiting.
"Babe, you can't go around glaring at people. Intimidating them does not work," she said.
"I know babe," he replied.
She laughed. They got on the elevator. She pushed the button. Sofia started to fuss as the elevator went up. Happy turned the seat so he could look at her. She was beginning to squirm in the seat.
"She getting hungry?" he asked.
"Shouldn't be," she said.
They got off on the right floor and walked down the hall. They stopped at the nurse's station.
"We are looking for room 3172," Dani said.
The nurse looked up at her. She glanced behind Dani at Happy.
"She was our transfer from the nursing home, correct?" she asked, stumbling a bit over her words.
"Yes," Dani replied.
"Follow me, I'll take you there,"
"Could you tell me what's going on with her first?"
"She has pneumonia,"
"Is it bad?"
"She has oxygen right now, but I believe it was caught quickly enough that she will be just fine,"
Dani nodded. She glanced at her husband and could see him visibly relax.
"Right this way," the nurse said.
They walked down the hall behind the nurse. She led them to the room. Dani walked through it first. Rosa looked surprised to see her. She smiled.
"Hey Ma," she said.
Happy walked through the door with their daughter's seat. He put his daughter down in the recliner. He turned to his mother.
"What are you guys doing here?" Rosa asked, sounding out of breath.
"The nursing home called and told us they transferred you here," Dani told her, moving closer to the bed.
Happy hung back.
