Ed paced around the small dorm room, her teeth clamped down on her bottom lip. A knot was forming in her stomach with every second that passed and Al wasn't back yet.
He'd been gone for exactly six hours and twenty seven minutes.
Ed didn't know what to do. It was well past midnight, and Al wasn't back yet. Perhaps she wouldn't have been so worried had he been a suit of armour, but now that he'd gotten his body back he was much more vulnerable. And Ed's protectiveness had increased tenfold.
What was she going to do?
Al had told her repeatedly not to worry so much, but she couldn't help it. And now, she had an excuse; Al had never been out so late. Without a call, without anything. He hadn't even told her, when he left at three minutes past six, that he might be late.
What if someone had attacked him? Was he okay? Was he waiting for her to take a hint and come find him!?
But, on the other hand, today of all days he'd told her not to bother him.
Al had told her not to bother him. It shattered her overly protective heart just thinking about those words, spoken just six and a half hours ago.
She needed someone to rant to, someone who'd give her a second opinion.
Yes, she'd call Roy. He was the voice of reason, so logical it annoyed her but that was what she needed right now. Because her mind was running a mile, gathering all the dreadful possibilities and making her itch to run over to the restaurant Al said he'd be at.
One could not be eating for six hours straight, right?
Her mind elsewhere, she picked up the phone, not even caring about the time. Roy wasn't usually asleep at half past twelve, but you never knew.
The phone beeped three times before he answered.
"Mustang." It was crisp enough, so she guessed he really had been awake. Reading probably.
"It's me," she said hurriedly, her hand fiddling with the cord. She wrapped it around her pointer finger and Roy took a breath.
"Edeline? What's wron–?"
"Al's not back yet." She took a deep breath and exhaled roughly. Saying it out loud was making her heart pound with anxiety. It was making the situation real. "He left at six and he's not back yet. Roy, what am I supposed to do? I've waited so long and he said he doesn't want me to bother him but what if he's in danger? I can't–"
"Edeline."
Roy's voice was calm, if not a bit concerned. Automatically, it made her take a deep breath and sit on the couch.
"Where did Alphonse go?"
Leaning against the back of the couch, she shut her eyes. "He went on a date with that girl!" She rubbed her forehead - a headache was slowly but surely coming. "They've been on quite a few but it's never been so late! He's usually back by nine!"
Roy was silent on the other end. Ed could hear his breathing as he thought. She was suddenly itching to have him here with her, his warm arms around her – only then would she be able to properly calm down and think logically. Now she was a mess.
"I don't know what to do," she mumbled, running her hand over her face. Al would be really disappointed in her if she showed up at the restaurant – he'd told her not to bother him. So she shouldn't...But...
"Just breathe, baby," Roy mumbled back, in that soft voice that made her heart pound in her chest. "Alphonse is eighteen now, and he knows how to protect himself from any threat. You know that. He's not a child anymore."
"I know..." She lay down on the couch, the phone against her ear. Now that she had somehow calmed a bit, she noticed how cold it was. She curled up on the couch, listening to Roy's breathing.
"I'm cold," she complained.
She could just imagine Roy's little smile. "I know where you're going with this."
She buried her face in the pillow to hide her smile, as though he could see her. "So what?"
"So what do you want me to do?" His tone turned teasing, and she smirked.
"Come warm me up?" she said hopefully.
If Al wasn't back until one she'd go find him, and she'd drag Roy with her.
Roy chuckled, and then sighed. "What am I gonna do with you?"
The way he said it was completely fond and it made her heart flutter, but being the little shit she was, she twisted his words with a smirk. "Well, you could do a lot of things with me. But only if you come here."
Now, Roy's laugh was louder, and she couldn't contain her smile. How was it that Roy could completely calm her down? He didn't even say much.
"I'm on my way, love."
Her cheeks heating up, she hung up and walked over to the little kitchen to make some tea. Knowing Roy, he wouldn't be more than five minutes. He lived relatively close.
She left the kettle to do its job as she glanced out the window for any sign of Al. Goddamn it, when had she literally turned into a mother?
Just as she was pouring the tea into two little cups, there was a knock on the door.
Roy stood before her, looking casual yet still ridiculously handsome. Ed let him walk in and, as she was closing the door, Roy's arms wrapped around her waist from behind. His lips touched her shoulder, moving upwards and planting soft feather kisses.
It was turning her brain to mush.
"I made tea," she managed to get out. Roy hummed, too preoccupied with touching her to say anything more intelligent.
She turned around to peck his lips. "Let's drink first and then we can go inside. Cause it really is fucking cold in here."
They curled up on the couch, under a thick quilt. Roy had his arm around her shoulders, and already she was feeling warmer, and calmer.
Yet Al was still on her mind.
And Roy noticed. Of course he did. "Why do you think Alphonse is so late coming home?"
Her head rested on his shoulder. "I have no fucking clue. Unless of course he's in danger then I'll feel so guilty for drinking fucking tea with you rather than looking for him but–"
"He's on a date, right?"
Ed blinked, looking up at him weirdly. "Yeah, so? He's been out with that girl about four times now, but he's never–"
"Ed." Roy was almost laughing, and it annoyed Ed to no end, cause, why the fuck was he laughing? The situation wasn't funny! What if Al was seriously hurt!? Her concerns weren't funny at all!
She moved out of his embrace, scowling. "What the fuck is so funny?"
His smile widened. "You're funny."
She frowned. Then glared. "If you want to get some you better shut up."
His deep laugh was loud, and it made Ed even more irate. He set his tea down on the coffee table in front of them, and Ed did the same. She was ready for an argument.
Yet Roy surprised her. He fell on top of her, making her yelp. His body pinned her under him on the couch, and his teeth latched onto the skin on her neck.
Irritated, she placed her palms against his shoulders and pushed him back. He was holding in his laughter, his dark eyes shining with amusement. Ed growled. "What?"
Realising she wasn't getting it, he settled on top of her comfortably, resting his chin between her breasts. "After all we've done," he started, a smirk escaping. "You still haven't realised yet?"
Now she was really confused. "What the fuck are you on about?"
A laugh escaped him, and he buried his face in her chest to hide it. But she'd seen.
Almost pityingly, he pecked her chest, over her tank top. "Remember when you used to sneak out at, like, one the morning to come to my house?"
Ed frowned. "Yeah, so? I was horny."
Another laugh. Then silence. He was thinking, probably of a way to explain his dumb point to her.
"Haven't you thought that...Alphonse might be as well?"
Ed blinked. What the fuck was he saying? "Might be what?"
Roy rolled his eyes. "Alphonse is an eighteen year old male. He's bound to be horny. And since he went on quite a few dates with this girl, well...It's bound to happen, baby."
Ed stared at him blankly. He couldn't be serious, could he? Al couldn't be...He was still young...It was...incomprehensible. He was so innocent, so...
Roy frowned, slightly concerned. "Baby? You all right?"
She sat up, making Roy sit up as well. "Al's...Having sex?"
Roy smiled sympathetically at her. "Well...It's a possibility. More than a possibility, in fact. I'm quite certain that's what's going on."
"But Al's...a virgin."
"He probably was, until tonight."
Ed blinked. She was trying to wrap her head around the idea but...All the things she and Roy had done together – Al wasn't a dirty piece of shit like she and Roy were. Just thinking about Al having sex was so wrong. On so many fucking levels. There was no way.
"So, you're trying to tell me that..."
"Alphonse will most likely come home tomorrow morning. You can speak to him then, love, don't worry." Encouragingly, he stroked her hair.
"Non-virgin Al. Al will come home tomorrow a non-virgin."
Roy shrugged helplessly.
"What if he didn't use a condom and comes home with Chlamydia. What then."
"I'm sure Alphonse knows how to protect himself."
Ed was becoming more distressed as this conversation went on. "Don't leave me alone here or I swear to motherfucking Truth I'm gonna go insane."
Gently, Roy eased her down on the couch. He wrapped his arms around her, stroking her hair. "Don't worry, we'll sleep here together."
Ed gazed at him, embarrassed. "Shit, you came for sex, um–"
"No I didn't. " He chuckled, kissing her cheek. "I knew you'd end up too shocked for that." Then, he grinned wide. "I just came to break it to you."
"Asshole!"
Ed blinked, her vision blurry from the sunrays hitting her eyes. Roy was breathing softly next to her, asleep.
They were still in the lounge, on the couch. The tea was still on the coffee table, now cold.
Al didn't appear to be home yet. Then reality settled in.
Al was having sex. Last night her innocent little brother had lost his innocence. Would he even be the same person when he walked through the door? Would he still have that cute little voice, the same sweet smile that blinded even angels?
Would she be able to tell he'd lost his virginity?
Oh Truth. She was not ready.
Roy stirred next to her, and she turned to look at him. His dark eyes were staring at her, making her heart speed up for a moment, before he broke eye contact to peck her shoulder.
"Morning, love."
She hummed. "What time is it?"
Roy reached under the covers to find his pocket, from which he extracted his pocket watch. "Half eight."
"Al's not back yet."
He squeezed her reassuringly. "He'll come back. Let's have breakfast."
He sat up, bringing her up as well.
Roy sat at the kitchen table as Ed got the cereal out. Usually when she went over to his, he'd cook her some amazing pancakes, but in the stupid dorms the only thing she had was Al's cornflakes.
Just then, they heard the front door opening. Ed's back went rigid, and Roy cleared his throat. He got up from the chair.
"I guess it's my time to go." When Ed wordlessly gestured at the cereal, he said, "I'll grab something at home, don't worry." He walked over and pecked her lips, before giving her shoulder a squeeze. "Don't be too hard on him."
Al walked in the kitchen and paused. They all stared at each other. Ed tried to make eye contact with Al, but he was avoiding it.
Roy cleared his throat. "Good morning, Alphonse."
"Good morning, sir," Al mumbled.
Roy walked over to the door. When he passed Al, he patted him on the shoulder. "Good luck," he said, before leaving.
Al looked back at Ed tentatively.
Ed took a deep breath. Honestly, she never knew this moment was going to come.
"We need to talk."
A/N Ominousss Lol. I always thought Ed would have this sort of reaction to Al 'growing up' She's so overprotective!
