So, if you haven't read the authors note on chapter 45….I first uploaded the wrong file. Basically, the one of the earlier versions of the chapter and I didn't check when I uploaded. But it's been updated. And for those of you that don't want to go back and read what happened, it's basically the same just with a little more detail. And the little bit more that I added is added in italics at the beginning of this chapter.
This chapter hasn't been completely edited as my weekend has been crazy. So, I will fix those mistakes when I can. And bad news: my computer is acting up. I'm taking it to get looked at tomorrow. So, the next chapter won't be up until March 25th. But in case I get my laptop back earlier than expected, I will update as soon as I can.
This chapter doesn't have a lot going on, but it sets up some important elements of the story. So hopefully its not too boring.
Thanks for reading!
Next chapter (tentative will adjust as needed): March 25th
Chapter 45 (Part 2)
Bella's POV:
Before I can step inside, I freeze when I hear hurried footsteps down the corridor. Signs of a struggle and laughing teenage boys. Remembering a similar scene when I was younger I hurry down the hallway.
Just before reaching the entryway to the Divination classroom a group of seventh year Ravenclaws are surrounding some students. From the insults and papers sprawled across the hallway, its not a friendly chat they're having.
"-nothing more than death eater children. You don't belong here!" The tall brunet boy that was spewing that garbage is knocked down by a tall lanky blonde that I've only seen once or twice since my return.
Draco is able to land a punch on the ignorant prick's face before he is held back two other figures in blue. I can now see a little girl and boy both in green and no older than twelve being corned by another Ravenclaw.
"You shouldn't have done that Malfoy." He says smirking before advancing on my little brother. I am already on my way to beat the crap out of them when a group of older Slytherins turn the corner and draw their wands.
The group of Slytherins that turn the corner appear to be sixth or seventh years, coming from class. As soon as they come across the scene, their expressions change from happy to weary. Their conversation of the essay Flitwick assigned dying instantly. All five of the newcomers immediately whip out their wands, ready for a fight if needed.
Slytherins have always been the outcasts of Hogwarts. And as a result, we have learned to be on the defense. It has gotten even worse since the rise of Lord Voldemort. Slytherins have a bad reputation for being hostile, dark magic practitioner, and sympathetic to the dark.
However, this has only made Slytherins more protective of their own. No matter personal matters or conflicts within the house, we always have each other's back.
"What 's going on?" A tall brunet at the front asks, motioning for the two younger students to get behind them. The young Slytherins rush to their older housemates, giving the Ravenclaws a wary glance.
"None of your concern, Blackburn. This is between me and Malfoy." Right. Exactly why he has his cronies as backup.
"And why is it that five seven years are needed to talk with a fifth year?" A girl asks sarcastically. The boy that was punched just grins sarcastically, using the sleeve of his cloak to wipe up the blood.
"You can never be too careful. We heard Malfoy talking about the breakout last night." Breakout… had more death eaters escaped from Azkaban? "People like his father are putting us at risk! The children of Death Eaters shouldn't be allowed to be at Hogwarts."
"Get stuffed, Smith. Malfoy and the Lestranges aren't responsible for the breakout." The Lestranges… they can't be Aunt Bella's so they much be the children of her brother in law. . I wasn't aware Rabastan Lestrange had any children.
"They are still a danger to everyone at this school." Smith spits out, lunging towards Draco again. He is only able to make it a couple of inches before he bounces off my silent protego. He lands five feet away on his back, wand slowly rolling its way in my direction. I don't bother to look at them as I bend down to pick up his wand, his friends' wands flying out of their hands to gather in my hand as well. The corridor is quiet as everyone stares in my direction.
"They are not at fault for the actions their parents have taken, and they shouldn't be treated as such. It's cowa-" I toss all the wands at Smith's feet, wordlessly mentioning them to pick them up.
"Right indeed. It's important now more than ever to work together. Mr. Smith I believe it's time for your next course, perhaps you and your friends should head to class." Dumbledore's voice fills the hallway. The man's ability to appear out of no where is astounding. He and Uncle Sev make their way down the corridor, taking their time. Uncle Sev's eyes roaming around Draco, ensuring he hasn't been harmed. His posture relaxes when he sees no injuries, lips turning up slightly at his bloody knuckles.
Like always, no matter the situation, Dumbledore remains calm as a cucumber. Walking toward us without a care in the world, smiling softly. Not seeming to care that a group of students had been bullying some students. For their credit, Smith and his friends seem to realize that it won't go well for them if they stay and they hurry down the corridor.
"You're just going to let them get away with harassing them?" The same girl asks, seeming to grow angrier by the second. The others are better at controlling their anger. While my little brother is looking between Dumbledore, Uncle Sev, and myself.
"No harm done. As it seems Mr. Malfoy did more damage than they did." His cheery reply has no effect on anyone here. "I believe it's time for you to head to class, you know how Professor McGonagall is about tardiness. I will send along Mr. Malfoy to his class once we have a talk." The rest of the Slytherins leave reluctantly, giving me a side glance as they do.
"I'm afraid I am going to have to give you a week detention Mr. Malfoy. Physically assaulting another student cannot be tolerated, regardless of the cause." The only reaction Draco gives is gritting his teeth and giving a brief nod. Not making a sound as he picks up his bag and walks away.
"What! You cannot be serious. They were bullying Draco and those kids!"
"I apologize Miss Swan. But young Draco physically assaulted another student. He should have alerted a professor if he was in trouble." I can't believe this.
"But –"
"Isabella." My uncles harsh look tells me to shut my trap. I do so, not wanting another lecture.
"I wanted to speak with you before you left. Severus and I had an enlightening conversation pertaining to recent events. And I wish to offer you a job."
"A job."
"Yes. During these times, some of the professors believe that students could benefit from a self-defense course."
"You mean like hand on hand combat?"
"Well, yes. We want to give our students the best chance of survival. And having someone here to help the students when needed."
"You mean to protect Harry." His serene smile doesn't give anything away. No indication that my accusation is any way true.
"To protect all of the students." I look at Uncle Sev, and he stares back at me indifferently. Giving me the option to decide what I want.
Being here… being able to look after my little brother would be a dream come true. And it would give me the opportunity to look for the diadem. But it would also mean less time out there helping the order. Away from Edward and the rest of the Cullens. Away from Scorp.
"Why don't you think it over and let me know your decision by the next meeting?" I nod.
"I have a class in an hour. I'm sure you can make your way home?" Uncle Sev answers monotonously.
"Sure." I say my goodbyes and make my way down the corridor. Only to get pulled into a side corridor.
"Who are you?" I whirl around and see the pale face of my younger brother.
I smile when his pureblood upbringing rears its head, and he quietly apologizes retracting his hand.
"Isabella Swan." His eyes look into mine, looking for answers.
"I've seen you at the manor. You're a Death Eater." He swallows, looking anywhere but at me. "But you're working for Dumbledore." Even without seeing him for years, I can still read him like an open book. He's struggling with the path our parents have taken, and the path he thinks he needs to follow.
Draco doesn't allow me to reply before he takes down the corridor and gets lost in a sea of students.
Edward's POV
It's been a week since Bella has contacted me, and I am going out of my mind with worry. There has been no work from her or her brother, and I worry that her wound has worsened.
During the last few days, it's been calm here. Only the Weasley parents, Remus, and Sirius remain. Everyone else has come in and out of the house at various intervals. Tanya and her siblings have gone to Carlisle's home in London to be with the others. Carmen and Esme have taken it upon themselves to help Mrs. Weasley clean while Eleazar and Carlisle have decided to read all the books in the library.
I've been left alone for the most part. Where I can stay in her room and worry about my girlfriend that is fighting a war I could have never imagined.
The calm of the morning is broken when Mrs. Weasley starts moving around the kitchen, preparing for breakfast.
"Wallowing?" I open my eyes to see the smiling face of my love's twin. He's leaning again the door smirking in amusement.
"How-"
"How did I get in without you hearing? Magic." I snort in response, getting up from the bed. "I need to go to Diagon Alley for some ingredients for Bella's potion. And I thought you may want to accompany me?" Spending the day with Bella's brother, not my first choice. But the chance to go to one of the most magical places in the UK?
He smiles, already knowing my answer. Scorp walks over to one of the wardrobes and searches through the clothes.
"You need to wear clothes that won't make you stand out." He says throwing a pair of pants, a dark blue button-down, and a black cloak my way.
"Whose clothes are these?" I don't think anyone here is my size, and I haven't seen anyone come in for clothes.
"This room used to belong to Sirius' brother. I'm surprised they placed Bella in this room. I guess all the other rooms were filled. Get changed and meet me down stairs when you're done." I get changed with my vampire speed and am sitting on the table by the time he makes it to the stairs.
"Oh dear." Mrs. Weasley exclaims jumping when she sees me. Hand to her chest, she jumps a couple of inches in the air. The bowl in her hands goes flying before moving softly to counter.
"Edward!" Esme reprimands me from her position on the stove, while Sirius and Remus try to cover their laughter.
"Sorry Mrs. Weasley, I didn't mean to frighten you."
"Oh, no problem dearie. I've gotten used to my sons popping up out of nowhere as soon as they passed their apparition examinations."
Scorpious finally makes it to the entrance of the kitchen, laughing when he sees me already sitting down.
"Cute. Ready to go?" I nod.
Next chapter: Some bonding between Scorp and Edward and shit hits the fan.
