Chapter Fifty Six
Blaine's eyelids fluttered open the next morning in an unfamiliar bed of the stark hotel room he had booked for himself for that night. Or what had remained of the night once he and his future self had arrived in New York. He had had a restless night, tossing and turning in the worry of what was going on with Kurt. Finally, he decided enough was enough. It was time to get out of bed and face the music. No matter what was going to happen. He was determined to solve the matter and have them get back to normal once and for all. Groaning, he got out of bed and padded his way across the floor to get himself dressed. As he took in his reflection in the mirror he winced at what he saw. His hair was a mess, all over the place in wild clumps of curls. Dark bags shadowed his eyes, making his skin appear grey and slightly sickly. He was not faring Kurt's strange behaviour well. He couldn't remember the last time he had had a good night's sleep, but it had not been for some time. He was tired. He needed a rest and only Kurt could be the one to give him that relief.
He shuffled over to his bag and proceeded to grab the first clothes that he came upon, not really caring much for what they were. Grabbing his brush and gel he tried his very best to make himself at least a little presentable. Once finished, thinking there was no way he could make himself look better, even though his curls were still acting up a little, he crossed the hallway to the room that his older self was using and knocked sharply on the door, leaning his head slightly on the frame beside it and closing his eyes for the briefest of moments. He couldn't even bring himself to open them when he heard the door creak open.
"Well you look like crap. Come in." Future Blaine told him, practically shoving him inside the room and chucking him on the bed as his older self got himself ready.
The elder Blaine fastened the belt on his trousers tight and turned to look at the younger version of himself. He was not looking good. The worry that was already heavy in his heart seemed to take over him completely at this moment. Blaine looked so small and frail and he wasn't quite sure how to give himself a pep talk. After all Blaine knew him better than anyone. There was no fooling yourself after all.
Sighing he padded over to the bed and perched beside the younger Blaine. Reaching out he squeezed the boys shoulder and rubbed a circle comfortingly into it as he watched a lone tear trickle down his nose and onto the bed sheets.
"Hey. Whatever happens, know you have done everything Blaine. Never give up hope. Alright?" He smiled warmly down at himself, his eyes crinkling as he did so. He found as he spoke those words that he found them to be true. If there was anything Blaine would fight to the bitter end for, it was Kurt Hummel.
"I can't live without Kurt." The younger Blaine whispered to him, sniffling as he did so, till sobs racked throughout his body.
"Hey, hey. None of this. It will be fine because you and I are going to make sure it will be. That we will get our happy ending. We will. Now say it." Blaine firmly told his younger self, pulling him into an embrace. It felt very strange for him to be hugging himself like this, but it was what he needed and he knew it better than anyone right now. Because he needed it himself. Being to strong part of yourself was hard.
"We will get our happy ending." Blaine mumbled into his chest and snuggled in further, needing the comfort of someone older and wiser right now. Even if it was himself.
"I didn't hear you. What was that?" Blaine asked his younger self sternly.
"We will get our happy ending." The younger Blaine replied more firmly. That's it, you have to believe it to be true Blaine. Believe.
"Good boy. Now lets get going. I don't know about you but I really want to get this over and done with." He patted the young Blaine on the back once more and stood, leading the way with his younger self in tow by his side.
They were almost at the apartment when Blaine's phone went off, buzzing inside his pocket. Stopping and waving at his older self to stop and picked up the phone in case it was Kurt. He hadn't bothered to look at the name on the phone.
"Hey dude. You get there ok?" Sam came on the other end and Blaine's hope raised a little. Sam could always make him feel stronger and more in control and that was precisely what he needed right now.
"I guess. Just nervous. I'm almost there." Blaine looked over to see the side of the apartment building looming over him from a distance. It seemed to get ever closer the more he stared at it, making him feel a little sick inside and so he turned and looked towards the ground.
"Remember Blaine, honesty is always the best policy." Sam quoted to him, trying to sound wise, but failing because he said it in an overly cheery voice.
"Is that a Mr Shue quote?" Blaine asked his friend distracted at least for half a second and thanking Sam internally for it.
"Nah, a Burt Hummel one." Blaine could sense his friend shrugging over the other end of the phone line and chuckled at the thought of Sam dispensing others wisdom. "That was after I ate all the cookies in the jar once and then lied and said it was Finn." Blaine laughed heartily over the image of an indignant Finn pleading that it hadn't been him when it was more than likely probably him. Especially when it came to food.
"Thanks Sam. I'll let you know what happened after."
"Cool. And good luck bro." Sam said his goodbyes and Blaine followed after, pushing the call end button once it was all done. As he put the phone back in his pocket he started walking once more to the inevitable conversation with Kurt. Blaine's heart pounded.
Blaine stood outside the sliding door to Kurt's apartment and took a deep breath in before releasing it once more. Come on Blaine, don't be a coward now. Just go in there and tell Kurt everything and find out what the hell is the matter with him and sort it out. Easy as pie.
Steeling himself, he cautiously opened the door, sliding it open just a fraction. The inside of the apartment was a mess. Wow, it really must have been some party. Shaking the silly thoughts out of his head, he tentatively called out.
"Hello? Kurt?" He called out as he walked in, twisting a little to see if his older self was following him. He frowned darkly when he saw the he was not. Great. Thanks a bunch. Let me deal with everything, like usual. God I hope I don't turn out like him. I seriously suck. He suddenly saw future Blaine's head pop round, looking confused at the silence inside. Giving Blaine some shooing motions, he then promptly returned to hiding behind the door. Wow. I'm totally going to hate myself if I turn out like that. Blaine sighed and walked further into the apartment, finally spotting Kurt in the bathroom with rubber gloves on and a disgusted look on his face as he cleaned his toilet bowl with great fervour.
"That bad huh?" Blaine called out sympathetically and Kurt's head whipped up at the sound of his boyfriends voice.
"Blaine! You really meant it when you said you'd be early. Rachel and Brody are still passed out in her room. Thank God. I don't really want to hear that this morning." Kurt grumbled as he walked out of the bathroom and peeled off his gloves, dumping them in the sink.
"Yep. Bright and early. You need any help?" Blaine pointed around the place at the mounds of mess that was piled up everywhere. Stop stalling Blaine. Jeez. Just. Do. It.
"No thanks. Come. I need to talk to you." Kurt grabbed Blaine's willing hand and they both made their way across the apartment to the sofa, where Kurt just chucked things off and sat down with a small thud. Blaine followed a little more delicately, settling himself beside Kurt timidly.
"What's all this about Kurt? You sounded really weird and sad on the phone." Blaine took Kurt's hands in his own and Kurt slipped them out rapidly, placing them on his face, covering it up as much as he could. Blaine patiently waited in silence, his heart thudding rapidly in his chest at the anticipation of what Kurt might be about to say to him. On the one hand, he hoped that Kurt would stay like this forever and spare Blaine anything that might hurt him, on the other, he desperately needed to know. Oh please Kurt let this not be too painful. He listened to Kurt sigh and remove his hands, his eyes rimmed red a little and a tear trickled down his face. As soon as Blaine saw this his heart trembled and a small stab of pain started expanding inside his chest.
"Oh God. This isn't gonna be good, is it?" Blaine asked woefully, closing his eyes in an attempt to keep himself calm.
"I can't be with you any more. We can't be together. I'm sorry. It's over." Kurt told him, resignation deep in his voice.
"Why?" Blaine demanded suddenly, the pain bubbling and threatening to expand over every part of his body. He felt faint, as though he couldn't breathe. Like he was under an ocean of water pressing down on him. Unconsciously, he folded his arms around his stomach, holding it tightly, trying in vain to keep himself together. Kurt doesn't love me any more... Kurt doesn't... I've failed... The tears he was trying to keep at bay flew freely down his face as he looked at the stony face of the man he loved more than any other.
"I just...can't. I'm sorry Blaine. You should go." Kurt got up and went over to the kitchen, busying himself with cleaning up his apartment as if what had just happened between the two was not worth thinking about any longer than was necessary.
"I don't accept that. You are the love of my life Kurt. I need to know why and I need it to be a good enough reason for me to leave because I swore to myself that I would never give up on you. Ever." Blaine demanded hotly, his anger drying his tears. How could Kurt trivialise this? He's everything to me. Do I mean so little to him?
"Please don't Blaine! Don't you dare ask me that. I think you should leave." Kurt hissed back at him, anger clearly on his face at Blaine's stubbornness. Why can't you just leave it alone Blaine? Why do you have to pick and pick and pick...? Please, if you love me, don't do this.
"Why are you so afraid to tell me?" Blaine furiously demanded, anger flashing in his eyes till they looked like two dark stormy oceans. Kurt, now suddenly enraged, screeched at the dark haired boy in front of him.
"Get out!"
"No! I demand to know!" Blaine screamed right back at Kurt, his eyes seeing red right in front of him. Kurt shook as all the anger burst forth from him in a torrent, revealing his secret and what Blaine had wanted to know of him.
"I was with someone! Alright! Is that what you wanted to hear? That I... I was with another man..." Blaine stood frozen as he heard the sob erupt from Kurt's throat, his eyes wide in shock as all the colour drained from his face. Shakily Blaine pulled out one of the kitchen chairs that Kurt had purchased in a flea market and sank down into it, numb, not quite believing what he had just heard.
