CHAPTER 43:
Must have been mid-morning and Rick was out doing his farm work, he hollered for Carl to help him with it. Even had thought that baby Judith could come out, of course Beth would come with her, as being the babysitter of the baby and all.
"Hey dad? You think there coming back anytime soon?" Carl asked her father, he was referring to Michonne, and Rachel.
"I think so, don't worry." Rick smiled as he was picking up clumps of dirt into the wheelbarrow. "You gettin' along with everyone?" The boy looked up at his father in a confused fashion.
"That came from nowhere." The son commented, "but yeah, dad. You did the right thing by letting these people come live here."
"Well the council did, I don't want to make decisions anymore." Rick retorted, he waved at Beth and Judith, as Beth playfully grabbed the baby's hand and had her wave back.
"No dad, you did too."
Lots of changes were made to the prison, Hershel, Rick and Carl helped with the farming. They had enough space for animals and to plant some seeds and grow their own food. But they also had a patio like area, the inside of the prison was so cold, moist, and dark, it was good to be outside and enjoy the sunlight and be amongst friends. Plants surrounded anywhere and everywhere that there was soil, to help liven up the place and not have it been reminded of dead and decaying corpses all the time.
Daryl walked out to the patio area and saw a lot of the newcomers that he as well as the others helped take in. Most of them were really good people, he didn't get a chance to talk to them all, but no one seemed to bother him. Sasha, Tyrese and the others helped bring them in as well, but recently Daryl had brought in the most. He didn't like having his brother stuck and bothering the people back at the prison, so he'd almost always insist that he came.
"'Ey there." Daryl called out as he saw Sasha on the patio stirring some sort of food in a pot. Merle stood talking to one of the new comers, a Doctor S. The brothers smiled at one another, Daryl looked at Sasha who smiled back.
"I gotta tell you, I wasn't sure about your brother at first," She explained, "But he doesn't seem so bad."
Daryl made a sigh of relief, "I'm glad, that moron is hard to handle. So he ain't botherin' ya or Ty?"
Sasha smiled and shook her head no, "He still is rough around the edges, but not bad." She called for a boy named Patrick.
Patrick had to be about 15, maybe 16 years old. Kind of a nerdy looking kid, but nice as can be. He had big, bulky glasses, and a short sleeves button up shirt, all the way buttoned and tucked in. "Patrick, stir this for me? I'll be right back." Sasha motioned for Daryl to follow her.
"Umm, Mr Dixon?" Patrick started, "I just wanted to, umm, say thank you for bringing us back that food you did yesterday, it was a real treat." Extending his arm out slowly he continued, "I was just wondering if I could shake your hand? It-it'd be a real honor…umm, sir?"
Daryl looked at him oddly and decided to humor the boy. Sticking his first three fingers in his mouth he reached out and shook the young man's hand. The boy Patrick smiled as the two adults walked past him, grinning from ear to ear.
"About today…" She started, "I don't know if we're able to spare a lot of people for the run…"
Daryl didn't seem upset or anything he sort of grumbled something as he was following Sasha. Taking a view at the fences he listened to her. "Yeah…thing is we had a pretty big build up overnight. Dozens more towards tower three. Getting as bad as it was last month, these things don't spread out anymore." Shrugging her shoulders, "I mean it's manageable but if we don't get ahead of it, not for to much longer."
Daryl didn't seemed worried by the news, Sasha was expecting a little different of a reaction but didn't mind this one. He saw that he was staring off into space, he had been in a daze on and off for last couple of days. "Hey you ok?"
"Wh-? Huh?" Daryl shook his head to come back to reality, "Wha' ya mean?"
"She will be back soon. Don't worry about her." Sasha smiled, almost everyone knew that the younger redneck did honestly care for Rachel a lot, in what way? He wasn't to sure. He knew he'd take a bullet for her. "I know you don't like her going out there, but you do understand why she does, right?"
Before Daryl had a chance to reply to Sasha, he felt a hand slap him on the back; it was Merle. "'Ey baby bro, y'all about ready to do this thing?"
Sasha looked at Daryl and then back at Merle and nodded, "Yeah, let's get going."
Loading up what they needed to, they were taking out a larger group to go and hunt for supplies. It was tricky to decide if that was what was wise, they were told by Michonne and Rachel months ago that all of the Governor's men were killed, so they didn't feel the need to worry as much, But at the same time they did, after all it's been half a year! How the prison gained more people, the Governor could have too.
There was a shaggy haired kid named Zack, he was Beth's newest love interest. She watched Glenn and Maggie fall in love so quick, and she was trying to get to that level with this guy. She walked up to him and gave him a quick kiss. "-Figured I'd step up and help, you know go with them." Zack was explaining how he was going on a supply run with Daryl and the others.
"Ok? Are you going to say goodbye?"
Beth was walking away and responded with a "Nope."
Both Dixons brothers groaned from watching the young kids have their somewhat romantic moment. "Like a damn romance novel, I swear." Daryl glared at the younger male.
"Hey!" Called a bald black man, "I'd like to stay pulling my weight around here." His name was Bob, he had been around for only about a week, and was found by Daryl not to far away from the prison.
"It's only been a week, Bob." Sasha grinned.
"That's a week's worth of meals and a roof over my head." Bob replied back, "Come on, let me earn my keep."
Sasha sighed, she was grateful he wanted to help, but thought he may have been jumping the bullet though. "You were out on your own when Daryl found you." Bob nodded as the woman kept talking. "I just want to make sure you know how to play on a team."
"You know he was a medic in the army?" Glenn cut in as he found his way to the outside of the prison, and leaned up against one of the cars.
"You're one Hell of a tough sell, you know that?" Bob and Sasha just stared at one another, not in a hurtful way, but just eyeing one another, not sure what to say.
"Okay." The black woman finally gave in, she needed to, it was another person to help bring back supplies.
A soft whistle was heard, Rick and Hershel were down by the garden and looked at one another. Smiling, Rick was actually smiling, he knew who that was. "Let's go." He hollered, Carl was off at a mad run to go to the gates, and open the door.
Yanking the rope down, the newly remodeled door was opened wide. Behind them where sharpened sticks that were used as traps for the walkers. Spikes! That would get them stuck, usually right through back and the walkers would be trapped not able to go anywhere, just to bleed out.
Trotting away on a mostly brown horse, with small sprinkles of white on its face was Michonne! As soon as she got inside the gate, she spun her horse around to see if anyone was behind her. Seeing that her friend was catching up, she started to get off her horse.
First was Xavier. He let a playful bark as he ran side by side with his owner, who was on a grey and black spotted horse. Seeing no need to attack anything in sight the dog could rest easy for once. Making sure that his owner got in first, and then he did. Letting Rick and Carl know he was in, he let out another bark.
"We're glad to see you." Rick exclaimed as he ran down to greet the two women.
"Glad to see you too." Michonne laughed, it had been a while, she was constantly all over the place. At the prison for a day or two, then back on the road for a week or so. She had her horse, Lighting that was her companion, just how Rachel had her dog, Xavier, and her horse, Thunder.
"Somebody hit the jack pot." Michonne grabbed something out of the side pocket of her rucksack, comic books. "But-" She pointed her pointer finger at him, "I get to read them when your done." Carl exclaimed how awesome Michonne was for bringing them back for him.
"Sorry Carl I don't have any." Rachel joked, "I guess I'm not as awesome." Rachel had been a little harder to deal with since the attack, she was constantly paranoid, and didn't find to much of a reason to smile anymore.
Rick walked over to Thunder and held him steady for the younger woman to get down from her stead. "Got a surprise for you boy." The sheriff said as he looked down at the Doberman.
Rachel raised her eyebrows, "Well Daryl and Merle let him some bones." The dog's stubby tail went wild as he heard the word, bone.
"I brought you this." Grabbing something else out, Michonne handed Rick a black and blue electric shaver. "Your face is losing a war."
Not saying exactly a thank you per say, but nodding as his grin said it. "You two goin' to stay for a little while?" Keeping his eyes on Rachel more than Michonne.
"Yeah, for a little while." The black woman nodded.
Rachel didn't answer, "Hey Rae?" Looking up as she heard her name, "It's okay to stay y'know?"
Daryl and the group that were traveling out were on their way out, as the motorcycles were leading the way, the Dixon brothers; they stopped when they say the two women standing and talking to Rick and Carl. "Well look whose back!" Merle called out as him and his brother turned off their bikes.
"We didn't find 'im." Michonne said before Rachel could
"Oh shoot, he ain't nothin' to stress about. I told you's two this already." Merle replied back. "Glad to see yah two. I mean it."
