QUINN POV
When Beth came too, I told her everything. She seemed to just stay quiet and not say a thing. She didn't acknowledge Russell whenever he came in with food or open the door to let us into the makeshift living room next to the room. Beth just stayed put. When Russell looked at her and realized it he just put on a smug grin. Beth barely eats and goes to the bathroom three times a day. That's it. I turned my head on the bed and looked at her. She's so silent and she looks so peaceful when she sleeps.
Russell had planned this. I know it was premeditated because he would have put a bed with blankets in a room with a bathroom. He wouldn't have created a makeshift living room. And he definitely, would not have bought clothes and two pairs of shoes for both of us. I don't know how he got out. Every question I ask falls on deaf ears. Right now I'm wearing a green t-shirt and black sweatpants. Beth is wearing a light grey shirt and dark grey sweatpants. I gently ran a hand through her hair and kissed her head. I got out of the bed and opted to use the bathroom and brush my teeth. I heard movement and looked out the bathroom door. Beth just sat up and ran a hand through her hair. She grabbed my jacket and put it on. Its freezing down here.
I rinsed my mouth and stepped out of the bathroom. The door to the room opened. I stood still. Russell looked at me then to Beth. He had something in his hand. He took a few steps forward and I walked quickly to stop him. He pushed me away and then sat on the corner of the bed. He shook what was in his hands at Beth. Beth looked at it, almost entranced with the item.
"Do you remember this?" he asked. Beth looked at it and nodded. "Speak, when you are spoken to."
"Russell," I said and walked closer.
"Yes, sir," Beth stated through gritted teeth. I saw him smile.
"Whats his name?" Russell asked. Beth kept her eyes on the item.
"Benny," Beth stated. Russell nodded and went to hand it to Beth. Beth outstretched her arm to take it, but Russell pulled back with a smile.
"What do you say? I kept him safe for you all these years," Russell said. Beth looked at the item and I could see tears in her eyes.
"Please," Beth said a bit strained. Russell handed it to her and Beth grabbed it. Russell grabbed her arms and pulled her closer to him.
"Do you know who got you Benny? Do You? My daughter got it for you. I had bought her one just like it when she was born," Russell said and then stood up. He looked up at me. "I suggest you get dressed. We are having a family breakfast." He then opened the door and left.
I quickly made my way to Beth and ran my hand through her hair. I lifted her face to look at her.
"Are you okay?" I asked. There were tears in her eyes.
"He told me he put him in the fireplace and burned him," she said and looked back down. I followed her eyes and saw an old tattered Lamb. A white lamb with Tartan patterns for hooves and inside ear. I bought this shortly before I gave birth to Beth, about a week before. I saw it in a store and I knew I wasn't going to keep Beth, but I just knew she had to have that Lamb. So I bought it.
"Well, he lied. He just wanted to hurt you," I said and hugged Beth. It's so odd what a childhood toy could do to a person when they see it again. "We need to get dressed. There's jeans and pants so I'm guessing that what he wants us to wear."
Beth and I changed quickly. Beth quickly hid the lamb and then put a sweater on. She put on black keds and I did as well. I opened the door slowly before grabbing Beth's hand. We left the room and slowly walked up the stairs. Halfway up, I turned to Beth.
"If there's a chance, you will run and not look back, do you understand?" I whispered. Beth looked at me and nodded slowly.
We continued up the stairs. I turned the door knob and expected it to be locked like all the other times It has been. It wasn't, it was opened. Cautiously, we walked into the main house. I could smell Bacon and maybe pancakes or waffles. I stood in front of Beth protectively when Russell came out of the corner. He just smiled and motioned for us to go inside the dining room. He walked and sat down.
"Quinn, your right here and Elizabeth can sit wherever," he said not caring where Beth sat. I sat down and had Beth sit next to me. Russell quickly left and came back with two plates. He put one in front of me and one at the head where he was sitting. He then went back and came back with another plate and three drinks. He put orange juice next to my plate and his.
I looked at the next plate and saw half a sandwich and a glass of milk. He set it down in front of Beth. I looked at my plate. There were three French toast with powdered sugar, at least two eggs and four strips of bacon. I grabbed Beth's plate and put it next to mine. I was going to put some of my food onto hers, but she stopped me.
"Ts okay," she said and took the plate.
"Kid remembers, good. Tell me Elizabeth what do you get besides milk and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?" Russell asked.
"Scraps," Beth answered.
"Beth hates peanut butter and jelly sandwiches," I said.
"don't care, what do you do after were done eating?" Russell asked.
"Nothing, she does nothing," I stated. Russell slammed his hand on the table shaking it.
"I wash the dishes," Beth answered. Russell nodded and started to eat.
"Eat Quinn," Russell stated. I looked at Beth and at him. I grabbed my fork , but let go.
"You wanted to have a family breakfast, well Beth is my daughter. She's your granddaughter. She's your family whether you like it or not, so you're going to have to suck it up and deal with it," I stated. I grabbed Beth's plate again and put a French toast on it, I gave her the eggs, and three pieces of Bacon.
"You like bacon more than I do," Beth said giving me back a piece. I started to eat and looked at Beth pointedly. She started to eat too. I turned to Russell. He was angry, he ate tactically.
He looked at me a few times. I handed my glass of orange juice that I had only taken a few sips of. I took her milk which she had drank half of. Beth drank some and I drank so of her milk. I put the glass down shortly after Beth did. Russell stood up angrily and smacked his plate off the table.
"I will not be made a fool in my own house!" he yelled. "I will not be disrespected by a whore and its bastard!" He walked forward and I pushed him away. I fought hi and looked at Beth.
Russell and I ended up on the floor where I kept hitting him.
"Run, Beth," I stated.
BETH POV
I moved from where I was standing and started to run. I looked all over the place opening doors, until I ended up in an actual living room. I ran towards the door and turned the knob to open it. I pulled at it a few times before my brain finally realized it was locked. I started to unlock it when I heard footsteps coming towards me. I undid the chain guard on the door as well. I pulled open the door. I walked down the few steps and looked around.
Its snowing, no there is snow. Snow wasn't sticking to the ground yet the day he took us. I looked towards the door and ran to the street. I looked to my left and right. I started to run to the right not sure where I was going.
BOOM!
I stopped running and froze. I looked down at my body thinking I'd see blood.
"Stay there Elizabeth," I heard. I sighed choking back a scream and slowly turned around. I looked up slowly and saw Russell, he was holding Quinn and had a gun pointed at her. He motioned for me to come forward. I looked at Quinn, her eyes were telling me to run. Her dads psycho, he'll kill her. "Elizabeth!"
I walked slowly towards him. He grabbed me by the collar and pushed me towards the house along with Quinn. Once inside he closed the door and locked it. He then turned around and swung. I grabbed my head and screamed from the pain. He hit me with his gun. Quinn came towards me, but was pushed away. My hair was grabbed and Russell smacked me across the face. I cried out on pain as I fell to the floor.
"Stop! Stop!" Quinn yelled. I turned my head to look at him. He was pushing Quinn away as she tried to stop him. I crawled away and got up. I ran through the house before I found my way back down to the basement. I closed the door and sat at the corner with my knees up. "No, please, don't! Please! Stop!"
I looked up as the door opened. Russell pushed Quinn away and closed the door. He grabbed a fold up chair and put it under the knob so that Quinn couldn't come in. I heard her bang against the door. Russell looked at me, he had his belt in hand. I sucked in a deep breath, I then spit at him. His belt came down quickly hitting me on my cheek. I cried out in pain again and then began to cover my face. It went on for a good five minutes before he stopped. I screamed a few times, only after he managed to pull the sweater off of me to get more skin contact with the belt.
I staid curled up in a ball even after he left. I heard him scream at Quinn. "If you do anything like that bullshit again, it'll be her I hurt, always her." Quinn came running into the room and grabbed me.
"Beth, Beth! I'm so sorry," Quinn cried. I looked at her as she sat me up. She gasped and had me sit on the bed. She wiped away tears I had no idea where there. She left towards the sink in the room and opened the bottom of it. There were pads in there and a first aid kit.
Quinn came back and started to clean my face. I seethed a bit from stinging pain. Quinn held my face so that I didn't move again. She kept saying sorry and I know it hurts as she cleaned a cut. She then put Neosporin on it.
"I'm not done," she said. I nodded and she came back with arnica cream. "He hit you hard with that stupid gun. It's going to bruise badly." She put the cream on me. She then proceeded to fee my head. I felt her touch the area that was cut for the tumor biopsy and removal. It's a sensitive area. "It doesn't feel any different. You'll tell me right? If you feel dizzy or have a headache, you tell me." I nodded and sighed.
Quinn and I lay on the bed. She started to tell me about her when she was in high school. About how she, Aunt S and Aunt B where in charge of the school. She told me about all the stupid and fun things they did. She answered my questions about my mom. She told me how she used to bully her. How mean she had been to her before they became friends. Quinn wouldn't let me fall asleep.
Ten minutes or so after we heard the door click we walked out of the room. We sat down and Quinn turned the TV on. She switched to one of the few channels on it and we watched cartoons. We drank water from the faucet in cups that Russell had left down here. We didn't eat anything else though. The t didn't have weather channels or anything. The TV didn't even show time.
It was only when Quinn thought it was late enough that we went to bed. I changed back into the clothes I had been sleeping in. Quinn looked at me expectantly as I grabbed Benny from where I had hid him. I got in the bed. Something else her father is angry about. I am supposed to sleep on the floor, Quinn obviously wasn't going to let me. Quinn covered the both of us and ran her hand through my hair. She started to tell me a story, the same thing she does every time we go to sleep since we've been here. She proceeded to tell me how she dragged Puck to a store one day and bought a beautiful little lamb for me.
