Fluffy Hair and Nosy Bosses

Disclaimer: I may not own these shows, but I do own a shower curtain which inspired this latest batch of weirdness. Does that count?

Phew. That's quite the header. To the chapter!

Dr. Deeks

"The mailbox."

"Nope."

"Um…that fence post?"

"Still a no."

"Wait, I know this. The tree hanging over the yard."

Nell grinned. "That'd be the one. A perfect spot to put a signal booster for surveillance bugs."

"Alright, my turn. I spy with my little eye…possible evidence that someone has come into some money." Deeks tapped on the driver's side window as he waited for Nell's first guess.

"That's a challenge. I accept." She narrowed her eyes and scanned the quiet residential street. "The sports car three houses down."

Deeks tipped his head, "Possible, but it could be a mid-life crisis."

They lapsed into silence as Nell perused the street while Deeks monitored the house they were assigned to watch. She peppered the quiet with a few more guesses, all good but not what Deeks had found.

Nell gasped. "I got it! That house with all the signs out front from different home improvement companies."

"Nailed it." He shifted in his seat. "Dumping a whack of money into renovations is a good way to get rid of cash. It could be that they're spending an inheritance, but if it's illegal money they would be yanking those signs out of the lawn as soon as possible."

They high-fived and went back to staring down the street. Nell asked a few questions and Deeks did his best to answer them. They had reached the mid-point of their shift and the boredom was fighting against their instructions to stay observant. It was at this point that Sam would start creating origami scenes and Deeks would get antsy. However, today their lull was broken by Deeks' ringing phone.

He yanked it out of the cup holder and crinkled his forehead at the caller ID. "Hello?"

"Deeks, are you busy right now?"

"Nope, just on surveillance duty. What about you?"

A heavy sigh sounded, "I could use your help."

"Sure, what do you need Lou?" Deeks pulled the phone away from his ear and set it to speakerphone. He popped it in a holder on the dashboard and held his finger to his lips, signalling Nell to stay quiet.

"I understand you're some kind of Williams-whisperer."

"Uh, what's wrong?"

Lou snorted, "He is all kinds of grumpy today."

"He's in a mood." Deeks nodded. "Okay, first step: find out what caused it."

"So I can shoot it?"

"No, that would be Steve's solution and it'll only get you in more trouble." Deeks grinned at Nell who was chuckling while keeping watch. "It'll be one of couple things; his family, Hawaii, or Steve."

Lou was quiet as he thought. "Well, Steve's on vacation with a group of his SEAL buddies."

"Was it planned?"

"Yeah, been on the calendar for a couple months."

"Moving on. Are any relatives planning on visiting or is Grace giving him fits?"

"Grace is a teen, she's always giving him fits lately." Lou would know, seeing as she would complain about her dad at his house when her and his son thought he couldn't hear them.

"I don't think his parents had any plans to fly out." Deeks tapped away at his calendar, seeing if there was any notes in there. For some reason Mrs. Williams had added him to her weekly family updates email list.

"Then…Deeks I got to go, the ogre is stomping around about something."

"Call back if you have to." Deeks slid in before Grover ended the call. He and Nell looked at each other and shrugged.

Danny cursed when he walked into the bathroom. His day just got a whole lot harder. Not that anything could go right today. "Lou!" He shouted out the doorway. He planted his fists on his hips and scowled.

"What? Did you find something?" Lou strode to the opening, scanning the room.

"There." Danny pointed at the shower.

"What am I looking at?" Lou squinted in the direction indicated.

"Right there!" Danny swiped the cloth curtain out of the way. "There's no curtain liner."

Lou sighed as his long legs ate up the distance to the shower. "And there's a rug missing from the living room." He shook his head, "there is a very good chance our missing suspect is now a dead suspect."

"I hate Mondays!" Danny growled as he stomped out towards his car.

"It's Wednesday!" Lou shouted after him.

Danny slammed his car door and banged his head against the steering wheel. Lou walked back to his SUV and where he would call in the crime scene techs. He grunted and hit the dial button on his phone.

"S'up, dude?"

Danny squeezed his eyes shut and asked with false cheer, "How's your day going?"

"Well, I'm sitting in the car with Nell watching our witness's house."

"Sounds boring. No Kensi?"

Giggles and chuckles came over the line. "No…she's inside acting as the witness's personal nurse. Let's just say we're really excited to be bored today."

"Sounds great."

"That bad?" Deeks picked up on the tension in Danny's voice.

"My suspect's probably dead but we don't know for sure because he's missing but so is a shower curtain and rug."

"You've got yourself a corpse burrito lost somewhere on the island?"

"Pretty much." Danny sighed and leaned back against his seat. "Plus, I'm in a stupid rental because somehow I got sand in my bearings and the car's on a hoist for the next three days. Stupid island covered in stupid beaches."

"Not much can be done about that."

"Exactly. And here I sit, thinking about all those times I cursed salt damage back in Jersey."

"So you've traded one for the other."

Danny sighed. "I guess." He drummed his fingers against the steering wheel. "I should probably get back to work. Maybe dig a lead out of this mess."

"Good luck with your burrito!" Deeks signed off.

Danny gave one curt nod of his head and then climbed out of the lime green Volkswagen beetle and ducked to avoid the surfboard roof rack. 'The only rental available' they had told him. He refused to look back at it and went to meet Lou who was chatting with the squad car sent to secure the crime scene.

Lou noticed that Danny's mood had somewhat improved after his brief respite in the worst possible vehicular match for Danny's personality. This was good since they had a rookie crime scene tech that was being extra cautious with following protocol and the delay was even getting to Lou. He was starting to think he was going to throw a fit when his phone chimed with a series of texts.

It's a Hawaii-thing.

The next one had an address of a place located not far away.

Get him a slice of thin crust and he'll be happy.

Lou grimaced and then mumbled an agreement. If a sorry excuse for pizza would make Danny happy and stop him from glaring at everyone who crossed his path, he'd make a sacrifice and eat some cardboard with toppings.

They have deep dish too.

Lou brightened, this could work out for both of them. "Danny, get in my car, we're going for lunch." He called out to his partner for the day who paused for a moment then followed him out to the road.

Deeks scrolled through the texts from Danny and Lou. Danny said that he was feeling much better now that he'd had a couple slices. Lou sent his gratitude for guiding him to a new spot for a piece of Chicago and for Danny's improved mood.

"Look, all is well." He grinned at Nell. "Dr. Deeks, writing prescriptions for happiness. I should've gone through med school."

Nell barked a laugh. "No, I think that would not have gone well."

"Psychiatrist?"

Nell snorted, "Even worse. Stick to the policing."

Deeks pretended to be offended and then smirked. "And mediating partner disputes from an ocean away."

"I'll let you have this one, you did fix it…with food." Nell tipped her head.

"It's how I keep Kensi in line, why shouldn't it work for more people?" Deeks looked so innocent.

They shared a look and then both smiled. "Let's not tell anyone about that." Nell shook her head and looked down the street. "I spy with my little eye…"
