Chapter 54: Project BlackBullet
Previously:
"…" Black stayed ever silent, listening to the meows of the black cat that sat on his stomach. He ran his hand down the furry animal, hearing it purr in response. "Are you willing to take the risk, just to hear about my past missions? My deeds in the war for and against Deviluke are classified information to even entire governments, possession of said information will result in not only your persecution, but mine."
"Like you give a shit, assassin." Rito quipped with a smile. 'Well this longest I've ever heard him talk, which is a good start…'
"…" Black stayed quiet as he placed his hands behind his head, the black cat on his stomach leapt off of him.
The two assassins stayed silent for a couple of minutes.
"Maybe another time then." Rito said as he begun to stand up.
"-Project BlackBullet." The hitman stated simply, surprising the boy, who nearly fell of the branch.
"N-Nani?" He wondered, sitting back down.
"A string black-op mission sanctioned by the Devilukean government at the time." He explained.
"…Tell me more." Rito requested.
Chapter 54: Project BlackBullet
"Project BlackBullet… A string of black-op missions sanctioned by the Devilukean government in the critical times of the Unification War." Black began. "During the Galaxian Unification War, every colony fought for a place for themselves in the universe. The Akaviris, Memorzoria, Devilukia (later known as Deviluke) to name a few. It was everyone against each other." Black explained. "But even though empires were at war against each other. Alliances were formed and trade between colonies were more important than ever. And that's when Project BlackBullet was established."
'Zastin never told me about any of this…' Rito thought to himself as he listened on.
"At that time, the king of Deviluke recognised the importance of these trade link between colonies. And he soon discovered a new front to the battlefield." Black explained. "War has many battlefronts, Yuuki Rito. And ours is the most invisible, but one of the most crucial."
"Waging war out in the open battlefield was Deviluke's forte, but they were also smart. They knew that to truly cripple a colony, or force control unto them, the trade links needed to be threatened, manipulated, preserved, destabilised... or destroyed, if necessary." Black told the earthling.
"T-Then-" Rito's eyes widened in realisation. "Then Project BlackBullet were Devilukean covert missions which sought to sabotage and manipulate trade links to their advantage…"
"Correct." Black answered. "But Deviluke soon realised that they lack the required… expertise, in order to stay unsuspected of this underhanded stratagem."
"-And that's when they contracted you." Rito was now amazed. Partly at how much Black has opened up since... Well...ever. But more importantly, the forgotten history to the empire that he'll soon inherit.
"…When the war boomed, so too did the demand for the underground assassin market. I was particularly highly sought after, being the number one on the notice board at the time. Through the war, I was approached by a variety of clients. Courtesans, Aristocrats, Noblemen, Traders, Government officials, even other assassins." The hitman said, keeping his eyes fixated on the stars as he recollected his missions of old.
"So what happened?" Rito asked.
"The Devilukean government headhunted me with a contract during the height of the Unification War …"
*Flashback… seventeen years ago…* (Music for Mood: A Sneaking Sense of Liberty – Assassin's Creed Unity OST vol.1)
A single slitted eye peered through the crystal scope, its particular yellow glow and slit seemingly magnified on the other end, flickering around. Black sat on the very edge of the building roof, cross-legged and sideways, his matte black sniper rifle rested on his lap and gutter, pointed at a gentle decline. The wind howled against his face, his unkept black hair flowing across this face. But the man waited patiently, an earpiece lodged in his right ear. The purring of a cat could be heard from beside him, and he reached out with a hand, stroking its body, much to its purring delight.
"Black. The Devilukean representative is on site. Tall frame, long purple cloak. Tail hidden. Different coloured eyes…black and blue. Short grey hair. You can't miss him." A feminine voice came in through the earpiece as Black once again readjusted the position of his rifle. "I'm in position." The female voice added.
"Put him through now, Mikado." Black ordered simply. Calibrating his rifle's scope, the hitman zoomed into the Grand Bazaar that he overlooked, close enough that he scanned three windows at a time. 'A request from an empire is a first. Precautionary steps needed to be taken.' He reminded himself. He was in no rush. But he'd be lying to himself if he didn't feel a small tinge of nervousness reveling in his stomach as he waited.
Finally, a series of beeps from his receiver signalled him the newly established connection. Soon a man's voice broke through. "Identify yourself! And why do I have bug on me-"
"-Stop moving." Black commanded the voice systematically, keeping his hands sturdy on the trigger. In the distance, the purple cloaked man halted dead in his tracks within the bazaar, a sore thumb sticking out in the ocean of people and aliens. An easy target. "You are currently engaged in a conversation with the assassin you are looking for. You don't know where I am. But I know where exactly you are, this is not a threat." Black continued robotically. "From this point forward, you will contribute to our remaining conversation with either a 'yes' or 'no' response, unless specified by myself otherwise. Failure to comply will result in immediate and permanent termination of this meeting. Any attempt to divulge or record this conversation in any manner and medium will result in the immediate and permanent termination of this meeting. And finally, any signs or indications of retaliation or double crossing during any part of this conversation will not be tolerated and will result in immediate and permanent termination of this meeting. Are the clauses above acceptable to you?" The hitman asked.
"Y-Yes." The surprised but sturdy voice of the cloaked man replied, rooted in his position in the bazaar.
"Do you currently possess the contract documents addressed to the Assassin Kuro?" Black asked, the crosshair zeroing in on the unmoving figure amidst the busy market.
"…Yes." Was the reply he received.
"Hold the documents in your right hand and put both arms down." The black cladded assassin once again ordered. "I will give you five seconds to comply." He said, silently counting to five. "Is the contract securely in position?" He asked.
"Yes..." Was the man's reply once again.
"Acknowledged. Please proceed down the hallway in a calm walking pace." Black said. He then pressed the earpiece several times to change channels, before speaking again.
"Mikado, he's headed your way, thirty seconds till contact. Do you acknowledge?" Black asked.
"Loud and clear, Black-san." The feminine voice answered sassily, causing Black's eyes to narrow in irritation. "Hey did you know this market sells that new drug-"
"Save it for later and please remain on mission." Black said. "Fifteen seconds till contact. Do what you're supposed to do." Black said, the tiniest upward curl in the corner of his lips.
"Jeez…you're no fun, you know?~" Mikado teased.
"Ten seconds to contact."
'Hai!~' The voice sighed 'Hey how about a date after this-'. But before she could finish, the sniper abruptly switched channels to the man's.
"Do not stop." Black ordered to the purple cloaked man.
Five seconds.

"Uooghf…!" The man in the Bazaar grunted as a figure brush past him right side. He turned to look, but saw nothing but uninterested aliens pacing back and forth.
Black kept his trigger finger ready, in case the Devilukean decided to do anything strange.
"What was that…?" The cloaked man wondered.
"The contract has been received. You may now leave the Grand Bazzar in any fashion you see fit, but do without any malicious intent." Black ordered, taking his eyes off the scope. He sat up from the ground and begun dismantling his rifle, piece by piece, a gunmetal coloured briefcase beside him.
The figure stopped walking and looked to his right hand, twitching it. And true enough, the brown folder in his hand now nothing but air. His eyes widened in amazement and shock. "Wh…What…how...When did you-"
"Please report to your Devilukean supervisor that the contract has been received and will be reviewed within three to five galactic business days. Contact will then be established with a decision or negotiation offer after. Our business here is finished."
"Did you get the contract?"
"Who do you think I am?~" the voice retorted cutely.
"Then proceed to rendezvous point." Was all Black said.
*Flashback end… with Rito and Black…*
"E-Eh!?" Rito fumbled out in amazement. "Mikado-sensei was your handler before me?!"
"Handlers do not divulge any personal information of their past and present clients, you know this." The older of the males said.
"Well what happened after that?" Rito asked curiously. His human self has found a new sense of respect for the 'It seems we need to talk more often, Black-san…'
"Upon reviewing the terms and conditions, the contract was accepted and I began working as a freelancer for Deviluke."
"Wh-What did you do?" Rito asked.
"Modify trade links to suit the needs of the Devilukean empire. Trade links between other colonies are destroyed to ensure that they deal only with Deviluke, forcing their cooperation and servitude. That was the main tactic used by Deviluke to unite the colonies."
"Zastin and I…" Black said, "We carried out some missions together, as per the contract. Neither of us wanted to. He was always so quick to charge in to battle, so quick to spring into action senselessly and needlessly. And that threatened my mission success rate and customer confidence." Black criticised. "Some went well…" He paused "...and some did not."
"How many mission?"
"One to many…" Black responded, as Rito's eyes widened.
*Flashback… years ago…*
"…" The lone black figure sat atop of a boulder, his legs crossed, his hands on his knees, touching fists. He was currently in a meditative state, still as a rock and silent as the night. He head slumped down slightly, having to support the black cat that sat on top of his head. Once again, the man waited, patiently, quietly.
"Meow~" The cat called as it hopped off the man's head and landed on the grassy ground beside the rock with impressive agility. A minuscule 'thud' on the ground was all it took for the meditating figure to snap back to reality. The cat meow-ed out several more times, now finding itself in the presence of the newcomer's over encumbering cape shadow, before scurrying away into the bushlands to the side.
"We're here, Black." The newcomer announced.
"Oh please speak louder Zastin, I don't think the enemy has heard you yet." Black replied sarcastically as he hopped off the rock, his long black trench coat following him. Black faced the newcomers. Tailed ones gathered behind Zastin, who donned his scorpion styled armour and large red cape.
"Nice you see you too," Zastin retorted. "It's not like you to be on time."
"There's a first time for everything." Black said as he approached the Devilukean. "Do you have what I requested?"
"Yes." Zastin mocked simply as Black gave a mini smirk. The man waved his hand as his Devilukean subordinate approached the assassin, an assault rifle in his hand.
"…" Black remained silent as he rudely snatched the assault rifle from the soldier with both hands, expertly holding it in his hands, studying its every detail. Satisfied, the man took the rifle and its clips, storing them in the inside pocket of his cloak.
"Load up. And let's get to work then." Zastin said, pulling out a scroll from behind him. "Our target…-" Zastin begun to elaborate.
*Present…*
"-…was the foreign trade minister of Planet Kaizen. He needs to be taken out quickly and silently, and plant forged evidence to blame it on the Kugas, an enemy at the time." Black explained. "This would in turn create political and civil unrest and pressure between the two colonies. Also affecting both countries' economic state due to trade deficits and confidence. This was supposedly going to create an opening for Deviluke to step in and assert political influence."
'The war is more complicated than I had imagined…' Rito concentrated in deep thought. "Well what happened?" He asked, curious to know more.
"The target was supposedly residing in the Kaizen embassy on Planet Kugo. But little did we know… it was a trap."
*Flashback…*
Silent footsteps were taken as the group of armed soldiers crept through the gates. The Devilukeans all armed to the teeth, weapons up and ready. Zastin's glowing green blade readily raised beside him, positioning himself behind the black clad assassin. Black made his way forward carefully, taking light and cautionary steps, his assault rifle raised, pointing around his surroundings every so often.
The group slowly made their way past the embassy gate. And where there were guard posts, there was no one.
"What is this…" One soldier wondered lowly in a hush-hush tone.
"Where are the guards?" Another asked.
"Something's wrong… it's too quiet." Black alerted the squad of soldiers. "I suggest we pull out and assess the situation, Zastin."
'This is an important mission that Gid-niisama has tasked me to complete. He trusts me. And I will not fail him!' Zastin remained silent and rooted for a moment, contemplating their course of action. "We advance into the embassy. If the trade minister isn't dead by the morning, they will realise what Deviluke has done and we will lose any chance of civil political interventions."
"That is a terrible idea. It feels like they're expecting us." Black retorted softly but sternly, pivoting himself at different angles, his finger readily rested on the rifle's trigger.
"We can't waste any more time-"
"-Do not forget Zastin," Black interjected, a hand gripped on the armored Devilukean's arms. "You came to me asking for expertise on infiltration and assassination, remember? This is advice coming from a professional. I suggest we perform a tactical retreat and wait for another opportunity-"
"Advice noted. But if the target isn't eliminated by tonight, then the alliance treaty between Kugo and Kaizen will be signed. And that cannot happen. Men! We advance." Zastin ordered. "No witnesses."
'This idiot…' Black thought as he composed himself, standing up, setting his rifle by his side. "Zastin." He said sternly.
"What?!" The caped Devilukean general turned, a furious look on his face.
"While your men ready to march to their deaths for the glory of Deviluke, I'm not going to. This is a trap and you know it, Zastin." Black said, shock written all over the man's face. To face insubordination in a critical mission like this one is absolutely unacceptable.
"Know your place, assassin." Zastin said. "I will not tolerate insubordination-"
"Retreat or I walk." Black offered succinctly.
"You can't. You're under contract to-"
"-Fuck the contract." Black retorted, surrendering his rifle to the ground. "The contract specified this to be an assassination mission, not a suicide mission." Hearing this, the squad of guards began to whisper to each other, much to Zastin's annoyance.
"Walk away if you want, traitor. This will not stop me from completing my mission." The Devilukean told him, now turning to his men. "We march onwards, for Deviluke." Zastin hushed.
"Unlike you Zastin, I value my life over my ego, and reputation." Black warned simply, before turning around, and promptly vanishing. "Think on that, when you die with your fellow compatriots in this embassy."
*Present…*
Rito was stunned. To have relived this tale through Black's recount. He could honestly say that it had shed new light on Zastin, and Deviluke. Other than his sense of servitude and duty, the boy couldn't find anything common between the Zastin that he presently knew and the one Black described.
"You didn't uphold your end of the contract…" Rito whispered out. "That's bad for clientele."
"In times of galactic war, one must cast all sense of moral and ethics to truly survive and thrive." Black uttered, almost sagely. "They were blindly walking to their deaths. I am not to be blamed, as much as Zastin disagrees."
"Wh-What happened after?" Rito asked.
Then there was a long pause, and the snapping of a twig could be heard from below the tall tree, but neither assassins paid attention.
"Reports were that Zastin was the only one to survive the trap. The soldiers that he brought with him into the embassy were slaughtered that night." Black said casually as golden brown eyes widened. "Needless to say, Project Blackbullet was the cancelled, declared failure and archived. The Deviluke's intervention failed miserably and the galactic war raged on."
'So that's the reason why the two are always at disagreements with each other… Zastin blames Black for not sticking with the mission, and Black believes that Zastin's misjudgement was to blame for the mission's failure.' Rito thought, a new light shed on both Zastin and Black. "You've certainly played a major part in the war, haven't you?" Rito stated.
"I'd like to think so…" Black sighed, "…Things would've turned out differently if Zastin wasn't so stupid." Black exaggerated the insult.
"…" Rito stayed silent, refraining from giving out opinions of the Deviluke bodyguard. 'While that was a huge misjudgement on Zastin's part, I could understand the position that Black was placed in.'
With his final 'goodnight' greeted by a silent but appreciative nod, Rito hopped off the branch, and traversed down from the canopy level. And at the bottom, he felt it. And soon, he saw it.
A voyeur.
Paying no heed to the identity of the person below, Rito hopped off the branch, and landed behind the figure by the forest bed. Expertly, Rito kicked the back of the figure's knee, causing his leg to buckle and drop. Now in an advantageous position, the boy reached around the figure's head, his hand covering his mouth. The hidden blade on his right activated, already resting on the boy's neck.
"Mm…Mhmm…!" The boy could only muffle out in desperation as he felt the cold steel threatening his bare neck.
It wasn't until moments later when the Lone Eagle had realised who it that he had threatened as he backed off and retracted his blade. "Asuka!" He called out in shock. "Jesus… I'm so sorry…! I-I nearly killed you there…" Rito sighed, waving an apology as he immediately helped the tribe leader to his feet.
"R…Rito-san…" Asuka sighed in relief, rubbing his neck and coughing, checking for injuries. "Ka…"
"Look, I'm so sorry, but-"
"-Kakkoi!~ (So cool!~)" Asuka exploded in excitement, confusing the earthling with dry anime eyes.
"Ano…" Rito sweatdropped. 'Wasn't I just about to kill him by accident…?'
"You got me in less than a second! You must be one of those heroes! Those assassins!-" Asuka yelled gleefully, seemingly in a world of fandom, much to Rito's embarrassment.
"You were evasdropping, on the conversation between Black-san and I." Rito pointed.
"EH?! How did you know that? You two were so far up." Asuka pushed.
"I heard your snap a twig on your way here." Rito explained briefly, not willing to go in depth into his abilities. But his expression of adamancy quickly turned into one filled with concerns. "N…Not important. Anyways, how much of our conversation did you hear?" The Assassin asked.
"Everything!~" Asuka smiled cheekily, the tail behind him wagging and his doggy ears twitching.
"Oh god…" Rito sighed, pinching the ridge of his nose as he closed his eyes. 'This kid knows too much… and if he starts spreading rumours…'
"Asuka-san," Rito began, kneeling down as he held the kid's shoulders. "What you've probably heard were secrets, secrets so dark that if they get out, another galactic war might start. I need you to promise me that you won't tell anyone about what we were discussing. Is that clear?" The orange head offered gently.
"…" Asuka stood, pondering in thought, when suddenly, a comical light bulb lit up atop his head. "I promise… on one condition!"
'Great… now he's going to start making demands…' Rito grimaced. "Okay… what is it…?"
"Tell me who the Lone Eagle is!" Asuka demanded childishly, shocking the earthling assassin.
"E-Ehh!?" Rito froze as he searched his mind for an appropriate answer. "W…Who the Lone Eagle... is…?" he repeated.
"Hai." The child replied simply, looking up at the Lone Eagle in anticipation, for an answer. "You're also one of them right, an assassin? That was how you took out that wolf so effortlessly!" Asuka deduced, now jumping up and down in excitement, flailing his arms to imitate the assassin. "Then you must know something about the Lone Eagle, right?"
'Now how do I get out of this one…?' He questioned himself, hesitating as he struggled to find a way out. "Even if I am an assassin," The boy admitted. "What makes you think I know the Lone Eagle so well as to know his name? And how did you know about the Lone Eagle anyways?" Rito turned it onto the boy.
"Our tribe, Our Great Tribe of Yrn. We survive by trading with travelers from other planets. Our planet is abundant with rich soil and rare minerals. A 'resource planet' is what the outsiders call our home." Asuka explained. "And from time to time, you hear things. Rumors about this assassin, who goes around, taking out bad people, making the universe a batter place." The boy explained, much to Rito's embarrassment and somewhat relief. "His name brings fear into most people who recognize it. That was why I impersonated the assassin back in that cave. But I still have no idea who he is! Tell me tell me!~" Asuka whined impatiently.
For as long as he could remember, being the Lone Eagle has been but an excuse for him to rescue his beloved sister. He had a purpose. To safe keep his Apple of Eden and protect his family, as well as all those around him. But with the return of Mikan and the disappearance of his Apple of Eden. The orange head has found himself in a rather existential condition. Who is he? He asked himself. He felt torn inside, two altered egos, converging into one earthling body. 'Since when was I this existential?'
"I…I have no idea who he is…" Rito said truthfully, now walking off. "It's late, I should get some sleep." He said hastily, marching away from the kid, carelessly trampling on the forestry bed.
"Rito-san, please wait!"
'I swear… this kid…' The Lone Eagle grumbled within his mind, rolling his eyes as he marched on, kicking up small rocks. For a whole ten minutes, the earthling was bombarded with nothing but questions after questions, each one consistently more annoying than the next. Rito's face comically contorted with every question raised by Asuka. The two boys now emerged from the forest, and found themselves stopping at the edge of a tall cliff face, overlooking a vast ocean.
"Alright I give up!..." Rito sighed out, sitting down by the ends of the cliff, his legs dangling relaxingly at the edge. "What do you want from me, Asuka-san?" He asked, seeing the animalistic boy sitting down along with him, although a hesitant look lingered on his face as he stared down towards the jagged rocks at the bottom of the cliff.
"You five are assassins, ne?" Asuka asked, determined to extract every bit of information from the earthling.
"We are." Rito confirmed.
"Then what are your abilities?" Asuka giddily asked, a sceptical but playful look on his face.
"…That's proprietary information, kid." Rito replied seriously. But seeing the boy's large puppy eyes, the orange head's resolve faltered little by little. "…He's quiet, they're strange, and I'm fast. You happy now?" Rito replied exasperatedly. Technically speaking, he wasn't lying, but only scratching the surface of his potentially days of explanation.
"Heeeh…" Asuka deadpanned at the short response, now calming down down, donning a more serious expression as he looked to the blue horizon. "You know; I've been thinking… ever since you showed yourself at our camp… Why'd you do it?" The doggy eared boy asked, now looking at the assassin sitting beside him.
"D-Do what?" Rito asked.
"Save us of course. What made you save my sister, and our tribe?" Asuka urged.
"…" For a while, Rito said nothing and remained silent, a long look on his face as he stared into nothing. "…The Lone Eagle," Rito began, surprising Asuka.
"…Nani?" Asuka gasped, intently listening in.
"…The Lone Eagle… He once had a family. A mother, father… a little sister." Rito grimaced in slight melancholy. "But on one snowy night… it was all taken from him. His father and mother… dead. Gone. And his little sister… disappeared." He uttered, breathing out the cool air of the night. 'Why am I opening up to this kid… all of a sudden…'
'So Rito-san DOES know the Lone Eagle after all!' Asuka inwardly cheered, shock from the revelation written on his face. "Wh-What happened to the Lo-Lone Eagle…?" He asked fearfully.
"Time passed, and the days of mourning slowly became weeks. The boy was drowning in sadness, fear… hate. He had one goal: to rescue his sister, no matter what he had to do." Rito sighed. "…I watched the boy picked himself up from nothing, and with the help from his friends and close ones, he travelled across an ocean of stars, saving his little sister."
"Sugoi…" Asuka let out a sigh, amazed at the anecdote. 'To hear about the Lone Eagle from a friend of his… how lucky must I be…'
"That's why I decided to save your sister…. Because I couldn't bear to see what happened to the Lone Eagle happen to anyone else." Rito said with conviction, glancing at the little boy.
"Ne… are you ever going to tell me who the Lone Eagle is?" Asuka asked hopefully, seeing the earthling standing up before him.
Rito turned to the boy, "That's a secret.~" He winked with his golden brown eyes, disappearing in a small flicker or orange, surprising the little boy.
'He really IS fast…!' Asuka thought, picking himself up as he headed back to his tribe.
*Toro's Mining Complex…*
On all four, a wolfish figure raced up the stairs, and entered the office of a certain Monotaur, screaming, "Toro-sama! I…I-I b-bring bad news!" The wolf mercenary stuttered out, bowing his head. He dared not to look up.
Hearing the werewolf's whimpers, the large ox-man stayed facing away from the door, in front of his desk. From the werewolf's perspective, at the center of the office was his superior, his red and black back broad and overly muscular back, barely contained by the suit that he was stuffed in. The two ornate horns on the bull's head stood proud and tall.
"Report." The deep voice of the Minotaur groveled.
"P-Pack alpha has not reported back to headquarters in more than a day. Something has gone horribly wrong." The wolf warned. "I suspect that they were attacked. The Tribe maybe…or someone else…"
'Someone else… could it be…?' The Minotaur raised his eyebrows slightly in fascination, twisting his torso around to face his subordinate. The tall and broad half-bull-man's huffed, pushing air out from his large nostrils, his two nose rings rattled lightly, causing the wolf to flinch. "You pack of wolves are expendable, never forget that." Toro grumbled, now taking slow steps towards the wolf, his dull hooves shaking the dusty office floor. "I don't care how many more of your wolves it takes. My mine aren't going to dig themselves. And with the majority of my workforce unfit for work, you need to make sure that I have a steady supply of workers, Captain." Toro now stood before the wolf, towering over the creature. The Minotaur picked the wolf up and hung his collar on his horns, looking directly into the eyes of the petrified and dangling wolf. "Do I make myself clear?"
"Ye…Y-Yes… at once, Toro-sama…" The wolf whimpered out.
"Then begone!" Toro roared, shoving the werewolf meters back into the floor. The creature gave a yelp as he sprung onto his feet, frantically bolting out of the office.
Now in peace, the Mining CEO turned back onto his desk, rummaging past the piles of documents on his desk, reaching for a golden metallic disk.
'Looks like Ougi was right. The Wild Hunt will come for me after all…' Toro realised, strolling out of his office, his eyes behind her back. 'I have to prepare…'
