Death Note
Chapter 56
Summer break had officially begun and I had never been so happy then to be on vacation and relax.
I met up with Klaus and we had a long discussion about the Death Note, and a proper introduction between him and Millie. I felt like everything was a bad dream… a nightmare that I could never wake up from. But thanks to the helpful advice that Millie has been giving me, I was able to cope with the stress.
Since Klaus and I have talked, there have been awkward atmospheres created between me and him when Dylan was around. I could tell he was beginning to feel like the middle man, and that we were keeping something big from him. In truth, we were, but knowing him, Dylan will want to know what is up sooner or later.
For now, Millie went off to a place so-called the 'Shinigami Realm.' She explained to me that it looked like a grey, barren wasteland, where the sunlight never breaches through the clouds. In other words, it was like purgatory, except you were not going anywhere.
Connected to the realm, other than the human world, is another place called the 'Nothingness.' It's where, whoever uses the Death Note, goes to. Your soul either rots quickly or crumbles, or there are monsters that will eat you... whichever comes first. And if there was a cherry on top of this scary story, it would be the fact that Light Yagami went there after his Shinigami, Ryuk, killed him. This only made me fear Millie even more, and yet another reason why I should give the notebook back to her.
I walked around town by myself today. I didn't really have anything better to do, and I really wanted to avoid any TV's or radios that might involve the criminals who I killed. Even if it's almost been a week now, the reporters keep making references to it.
I stopped in front of a fast food restaurant, on a busy street and looked up at the sign of a cartoon panda holding a salad in one paw and a hamburger in the other. I simply shrugged and pressed on when I bumped into a woman who was accompanied by a man.
We exchanged our quick apologies and moved on with our lives, when I couldn't help to hear her resume her conversation with her partner as they walked away.
"I personally think Light Yagami is still alive. I think the media lied about his death, just so we could try to forget about what happened a few years ago."
I groaned at her statement and sat down at the nearest bench I could find.
I cupped my hands over my face.
"I don't know how much more of this Kira crap I can take. I wish it would all disappear," I said to myself.
"Why is that?" An unknown female voice asked.
I looked over my right shoulder.
A young woman with blonde hair (with a few locks tied up into two pony tails) was looking back at me. She was wearing a black, slimming dress with a pink outline along the bottom. She had a small black barrette which pinned her bangs back, revealing her light blue eyes. Her face looked very familiar, I just couldn't place it. In her hands she was holding a small book which had no title on the hard cover.
Damn, I didn't notice she was there. She must have thought I was talking to her.
"Uh, well, it's just that everyone seems to be talking about it. I just want to have a normal conversation with someone without Kira being the star topic."
"I think I understand how you feel," she said as she closed her book and put it in her dark grey bag, before turning to face me.
She looked me in the eyes and folded her hands in her lap.
"Ok, then let's have a decent conversation without Kira."
For a moment, I was confused, but I decided to go with it.
"Like what?" I asked, sitting up straight.
"Like… um… How about the laws? Some of them are really stupid. Like there is this one law that you can't look at a moose from an airplane. I think that law was passed in Alaska."
"Someone I know told me that it's illegal to have an alligator in your home. Who would want to raise an alligator in the first place? Whatever lunatic who does must have some sort of death wish."
"I heard that in U.S Los Angeles, it's illegal to bathe two babies in the same tub."
I laughed, "that's strange."
A friendly smile stretched across her face.
"My name is Misa Amane," she greeted.
"Have we met before? I feel like I know you from somewhere."
"I casted in a few big roles in some movies and TV shows, and I was also model in magazines a few years ago."
That doesn't seem like where I knew her from. I think I must have read about her somewhere. I just can't remember where…
"Yeah, maybe that's why you look so familiar to me. My name is Trevor West."
"Nice to meet you," she said with pleasant manners.
It was like at that moment I got a very cold vibe. Like a chill riding up my spine with a rising feeling of regretting that I met someone who I wish I never would have. I felt miserable and overwhelmed and there is only one explanation to how I would get this feeling.
I looked behind me, and just as I expected, Millie was watching down on our conversation with her red glaring eyes.
I sometimes wondered if they ever used to wide with some kind of good impressionable feeling like curiosity or innocence. But if they ever were, that disappeared long ago.
Millie's arms were crossed and she seemed impatient for something.
I looked back at Misa who was still smiling.
"Crap," I began, "I was supposed to meet up with someone," I lied.
"Oh, ok," she said in a quieter tone.
"Thank you for the conversation though, Misa. It really helped get my mind off of some things," I said.
She nodded.
I waved good-bye and began walking down the street with Millie following behind me. A gut-wrenching feeling was telling me the she seemed very annoyed.
