River appeared outside the Tardis, nearly falling over from the travel.
She held her stomach and sunk to the ground, burying her head in her hands and taking slow deep breaths.
Mum?
Yes, darling?
Are you alright? I'm sorry if I...
No, no, love. Mummy's fine.
As if to prove it, she stood, using the Tardis as leverage to keep her steady.
There. See? Now you just work on that spell and the code.
River pulled on the Tardis door and it swung open.
The past Doctor swung around, surprised that the doors of his Tardis had swung open.
"River?"
"Hello, sweetie." she grinned.
"What are you doing here? How..."
She walked up to him and planted a soft kiss on his lips.
"Spoilers. Where are we?"
"Um...You first."
"Sorry, sweetie. I already know I'm ahead of you. Come on, then. Where are you?"
River perched herself on the Tardis couch, making sure to look casual but still feeling quite ill from their travel through the vortex.
"I've just done America. The second time."
River felt her hearts breaking but fought to keep her thoughts from going there.
"Oh, good. I was hoping you would be past the wedding."
She grinned cheekily and stood again, wandering up to him and kissing him tenderly, longer this time.
He kissed her back, enjoying every moment.
River broke it off but slid her hands around his neck, his fitting perfectly in their place around her hips.
She was so happy to be in his arms again, even if he wasn't aware of everything that was happening. It had been weeks since she had last seen him.
"Right then, you bad bad girl. What trouble have you got for me this time." he said, coyly
You guys are DISGUSTING.
River had almost forgotten the baby could hear all of this.
Well where do you think you came from, dear? Mummy and daddy love each other.
Ewugh...
She laughed.
"Let me show you."
River walked over to the console and pulled up some readings from the scanner.
"Read those."
The Doctor leaned in and began to read as River pulled levers and knobs, flying them effortlessly into the tunnel under the pyramid.
"Right. So...what?"
Not too bright sometimes, is he mum?
River laughed again and reached for the Doctor's hand.
"Come on, I'll show you."
They left the Tardis and walked out into the tunnel.
"Where are we?"
"Under a pyramid." she replied, pulling out her scanner and studying the walls carefully as she walked.
"Looking for that fancy broach I presume?"
She rolled her eyes.
"It's not a broach Doctor."
He doesn't even want to be here. Why'd we bring him?
I don't know. He said he came with me so I suppose there's a reason.
Oh.
River found the keypad and glanced at the Doctor.
"Coming, sweetie?"
He sighed and came over to her.
Got that code figured out yet, baby?
Ages ago! It was quite simple. All I did was...
Code, please?
Right, sorry. 835994.
Thank you, love.
She plugged in the numbers and a door next to the keypad opened up.
River stared quizzically between the door on this wall and the place on the opposite wall where the door had opened up last time.
It was an entirely different room? Okay...
She checked her scanner to be sure it was safe, then ducked inside the tunnel, the Doctor on her heels.
"Is everything okay? You looked a bit..." he asked.
"Yeah it's fine. It's through here." River interrupted.
They walked on until they came to a small chamber. In the center was a stone pillar about three feet high and one foot in diameter. There was a small pillow perched on top, gently holding the scarab in it's center.
River smiled.
That was easy! the baby said.
Too easy, I'm afraid. Settle in tight, love. I've got a feeling we're about to be running.
The Doctor and River slowly approached the pillar and studied it carefully, looking for traps.
"Well maybe it doesn't have any. It is 1740 BC, after all." River said.
"You're probably right." he said and reached out to grab it.
Something tickled the back of her mind. Their last visit, there had been Judoon everywhere...
"Wait, Doctor! No!" she cried.
It was too late. He had picked it up.
Suddenly there were alarms and flashing lights everywhere.
The Doctor and River looked at each other in alarm and bolted back down the corridor.
As they rounded the last bend to the main tunnel, the skidded to a halt, breathless and in fear of what they saw in front of them.
The Weeping Angel.
Full size and waiting to kill them the second they blinked.
River's hearts were pounding fast in fright and panic.
"River, don't blink." the Doctor said.
She ignored him. She already knew.
MUM! The spell!
Oh right. Have you got that worked out?
Yeah. Look into it's eyes and say "".
River did so, watching it shrink in size each time she repeated the word.
Her strength was draining fast and she sunk down the cave wall, hoping the Doctor would handle the angel quickly so they could get out of there.
Her eyes locked shut.
The Doctor stared in disbelief as River shrunk the angel. He couldn't take his eyes off it. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw River losing consciousness against the wall.
"River?" he said, worriedly.
There was no answer.
He quickly ran up to the small angel and picked it up, hurtling it as far as he could behind them in the direction they had come.
Still not looking away, he went to River's side and picked her up, gently.
Then he backed out into the main tunnel and closed the wall behind him.
Finally, he could pay attention to River.
"River? Can you hear me?"
There was no response.
He hear footsteps and turned to see dozens of Judoon racing towards him.
"Ah. Intergalactic police alarms. Perfect." he said under his breath.
The Doctor turned and raced into the Tardis, setting River down gently on the floor and locking the doors before racing up to the console and sending them flying into the vortex.
River groaned.
The Doctor raced to her side and held her in his arms, brushing a curl from her face.
"River?"
Her eyes opened, weakly.
"You marvelous idiot..." she whispered.
He smiled and kissed her.
River ran her hand over her belly.
You alright in there?
Yes, mum. Perfectly fine!
Good.
"River are you alright? What happened?"
She tried to sit up on her own but he had to help her.
"Oh nothing, my love. Ancient spells have consequences sometimes."
She shook her head slightly and ran a hand through her hair.
"Come on, then." the Doctor said, helping her to her feet and supporting her as she walked to the couch.
"Thank you, sweetie." she grinned.
He pulled out the scarab and placed it in her hand.
"There you are, River. One beetle."
She studied it, smiling.
She could get the Doctor back. But how?
Suppose we hide it somewhere on the console with a note for him?
Well the would work except your father isn't the brightest and probably wouldn't find it.
Then let's tell the Tardis.
River smiled. It was perfect! She could keep it hidden there and give it to him when he needed it!
"Doctor, could you maybe get me some tea?" she asked sweetly, playing up her weakness.
Her strength was coming back. If she could get him out of the room for a minute, she could write a note and hide the beetle before he came back.
"Alright, love. Do you want anything else?"
He came over to her and kissed her.
"No, thanks. Just tea, please."
She kissed him again as he went.
As soon as he was out of the room, River stood and dug out a paper and pen from her bag, which was still sitting by the console.
Hastily she scribbled a note she hoped he would understand and shut her eyes, concentrating.
"Alright, old girl. Where do you want this?"
A sound came from the other side of the console and River walked around it to get a look.
A small drawer had popped out, just large enough for the beetle and note.
"Thank you, dear. You know what to do. Bring him home to me."
River walked back to the couch and sat down just as the Doctor appeared with her tea.
She took it from him gratefully and began to sip it.
"Alright, River. Where now?"
"Now?" she asked.
"Well we got it, didn't we? So now where are we off to?"
River thought for a minute.
"Is it Wednesday?"
"Yeah."
"Well I know where YOU are going. But me? Spoilers."
She laughed as he pulled a face.
River finished her tea and pulled out her vortex manipulator.
"Do you really have to go? You just barely got here." he said, sadly.
She smiled.
"I expect you'll see me again really REALLY soon, my love. Probably today, in fact."
He grinned at her and she picked up her bag on her way to him.
"You know I love you, right?" she asked.
"Of course I know that, River! I love you, too."
He kissed her there, in his Tardis, tears streaming down her face.
Tears?
He pulled away to look at her but she vanished before he could.
River appeared in her parents' living room mere seconds after she had left.
She sank to the ground, holding her middle and trying not to be sick, taking more slow, deep breaths.
Amy and Rory were caught off guard by her sudden return and immediately started to worry and fuss over her.
"River?"
"Are you okay?"
Mum?
"Are you hurt?"
You aren't okay like last time...
"Is the baby okay?"
Are you alright?
River's head couldn't take it.
"Hush! All of you!" she said, firmly, and everything stopped.
She took a deep breath and sat up, slowly.
"Ri..." Amy started but River held up a hand and she stopped.
River shut her eyes tight, fighting off the sick feeling inside, and pulled her knees under herself, preparing to stand.
Amy and Rory watched carefully as she stood shakily, prepared to catch her if she buckled.
River walked slowly to the chair and sat down, letting herself sink into the cushion before dealing with her parents.
She ran a hand through her hair and took in a breath.
"I'm perfectly fine, mum. The baby's fine, dad. It's just the energy from the vortex. Without the protection of the Tardis, I get a bit sick. It'll be gone in a bit."
Mum?
Yes, dear?
You said 'all of you'...
River froze as she realized her mistake.
She looked up at her parents, hoping they had missed it.
They hadn't.
"River, before you left...and then just now...you said..." Rory said, confused but demanding an explanation.
"Alright, alright. Something happened to me when I ate the fruit."
She began explaining to them what had happened.
