North goes on a search for Connor when he disappears from the first annual tribute to those lost in the battle for freedom. What she doesn't realize she's about to learn is Connor's real standing in Jericho.

Connor had been called a hunter, a deviant, a savior. It was only when he found himself doubled over in a waiting room, his nails digging so far into his scalp that blue rivulets streamed down his forehead, that he realized he had only ever been a hypocrite.

"Are you afraid to die, Connor?" . . . "...yes, Lieutenant. I am afraid. I don't want to die."
