Lewis The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness. -Joseph Conrad Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. -Antoine de Saint-Exupery Silence is one of the hardest arguements to refute. -Josh Billings Fear is something to be moved through, not something to be turned from. - Peter McWilliams Maybe all one can do is hope to end up with the right regrets. -Arthur Miller. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. -Mark Twain Friendless, adj.: Having no favors to bestow. Destitute of fortune. Addicted to utterance of truth and common sense. -Ambrose Bierce Perfect goodness can never debate about the end to be attained, and perfect wisdom cannot debate about the means most suited to achieve it. -C.S. Lewis Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better. To the confident it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better. -King Whitney Jr. It now seemed that...the deepest thirst within him was not adapted to the deepest nature of the world. –C.S. Lewis People are people, messy and mutable, combining differently with one another from day to day - even hour to hour. –Elizabeth Moon Novels so often provide an anodyne and not an antidote, glide one into torpid slumbers instead of rousing one with a burning brand. -Virginia Wool Work and struggle and never accept an evil that you can change. -Andre Gide [Pain] removes the veil; it plants the flag of truth within the fortress of a rebel soul. -C.S. Lewis The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function. - F. Scott Fitzgerald [The natural life] knows that if the spiritual life gets hold of it, all its self-centredness and self-will are going to be killed and it is ready to fight tooth and nail to avoid that.-C.S. Lewis Divide and rule, a sound motto. Unite and lead, a better one. -Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome. -Isaac Asimov Frequency of a tragedy does not diminish the wound when it is your own. -Linda Berdoll Beware of undertaking too much at the start. Be content with quite a little. Allow for accidents. Allow for human nature, especially your own. -Arnold Bennett If the injustice is part of the necessary friction of the machine of government, let it go, let it go; perchance it will wear smooth—certainly the machine will wear out. -Henry David Thoreau Human Dignity has gleamed only now and then and here and there, in lonely splendor, throughout the ages, a hope of the better men, never an achievement of the majority. - James Thurber Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated. -Confucius Sometimes, instead of climbing over the barricades, you've got to walk around them. -Bono Misery is manifold...as the rainbow; its hues are as various as the hues of that arch. -Edgar Allan Poe Wealth should not be seized...for if a man take great wealth violently and perforce, or if he steal it through his tongue, as often happens when gain deceives men's sense and dishonor tramples down honor, the gods soon blot him out and make that man's house low, and wealth attends him only for a little time. -Homer History is a story written by the finger of God. -C.S. Lewis The happiest women, like the happiest nations, have no history. -George Eliot In literature as in love, we are astonished at what is chosen by others. -André Maurois Unless I accept my faults, I will most certainly doubt my virtues. -Hugh Prather Nothing is worse than active ignorance. -Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Nothing’s better than the wind to your back, the sun in front of you, and your friends beside you. -Aaron Douglas Trimble Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such. -Henry Miller If we retain only what can be justified by standards of prudence and convenience at the bar of enlightened common sense, then we exchange revelation for that old wraith Natural Religion. -C.S. Lewis You'll worry less about what people think about you when you realize how seldom they do. -David Foster Wallace Everything that lives, lives not alone, nor for itself. -William Blake Give not over thy soul to sorrow; and afflict not thyself in thy own counsel. Gladness of heart is the life of man and the joyfulness of man is length of days. -Ecclesiastes Those who seek consolation in existing churches often pay for their peace of mind with a tacit agreement to ignore a great deal of what is known about the way the world works. -Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi Beware of undertaking too much at the start. Be content with quite a little. Allow for accidents. Allow for human nature, especially your own. -Arnold Bennett Man sheds his grief as his skin sheds rain. -Ralph Waldo Emerson One of the most obvious facts about grown ups to a child is that they have forgotten what it is like to be a child. -Randall Jarrell The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread. -Mother Teresa Sometimes the most urgent and vital thing you can possibly do is take a complete rest. -Ashleigh Brillian Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid only of standing still. -Chinese Proverb In this life we get only those things for which we hunt, for whichwe strive, and for which we are willing to sacrifice. -George Matthew Adams Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative. -Oscar Wilde Generosity with strings is not generosity; It is a deal. -Marya Mannes I like living. The ability to change. -George Leonard Andrews The longest journey is the journey inward. -Dag Hammarskjöld Anger is never without Reason, but seldom with a good One. -Benjamin Franklin Destiny is something not be to desired and not to be avoided. You find your soul then. You realize that youth is not a vanished thing but something that dwells forever in the heart. -Lucy Maud Montgomery I have never felt lonesome, or in the least oppressed by a sense of solitude, but once, and that was a few weeks after I came to the woods, when, for an hour, I doubted if the near neighborhood of man was not essential to a serene and healthy life. -Henry David Thoreau Drink nothing without seeing it; sign nothing without reading it. -Spanish Proverb Keep on going and the chances are you will stumble on something, perhaps when you are least expecting it. Kennedy Doubt whom you will, but never yourself. -Christine Bovee The stains of her grief became her as raindrops do the beaten rose. -Edith Wharton (mysle o noellu) Ideas shape the course of history. -John Maynard Keynes Accident, n.: A condition in which presence of mind is good, but absence of body is better. -Unknown Words ought to be a little wild for they are the assaults of thought on the unthinking. -John Maynard Keynes I'm treating you as a friend asking you to share my present minuses in the hope that I can ask you to share my future pluses. -Katherine Mansfield Beware the pull on your heartstrings--it's often the pursestrings that are actually being reached for. -Barbara Mikkelson No man can ever feel his own identity aright except his eyes be closed; as if darkness were indeed the proper element of our essences, though light be more congenial to our clayey part. -Herman Melville You probably wouldn't worry about what people think of you if you could know how seldom they do. -Olin Miller There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun. -Pablo Picasso An economist is a surgeon with an excellent scalpel and a rough-edged lancet, who operates beautifully on the dead and tortures the living. -Nicholas Chamfort Two men look out through the same bars: One sees the mud and one the stars. -Frederick Langbridge Be sure that the ins and outs of your individuality are no mystery to Him; and one day they will no longer be a mystery to you. -C.S. Lewis (o Bogdanem albo Fleurem) If we don't know life, how can we know death? -Confucius I believe our longing for an innate harmony runs deeper than our longing for righteousness. -Evelyn Rodriguez Concentration is the ability to think about absolutely nothing when it's absolutely necessary. -Ray Knight The minute one utters a certainty, the opposite comes to mind. -May Sarton They say that none of us exists, except in the imagination of his fellows, other than as an intangible, invisible mentality. -Edgar Rice Burroughs It is true that the rivers went nosing like swine, Frogs Eat Butterflies, Snakes Eat Frogs, Hogs Eat Snakes, Men Eat Hogs, Wallace Stevens Tellurian: of or characteristic of the earth or its inhabitants; terrestrial. Are we all? If it's there and you can see it - it's real. I found this fascinating. Hopefully all who read it will, too. What about the aethiests and agnostics involved, and the Zoroastrians and Hindus, etc? Where do they go? The Situation in Hell The following is supposedly an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid-term. The answer by one student was so "profound" that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well. Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following: First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different Religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added. This gives two possibilities: 1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose. 2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over. So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, "it will be a cold day in Hell before I go out with you", and take into account the fact that I went out with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct . . . leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting "Oh my God." THIS STUDENT RECEIVED THE ONLY "A." To anyone hoping for updates on the BBB/HP crossover I started over a good 5 years now... if it'll be continued, it'll only be with a deletion of current content and a complete overhaul. My muse hasn't been in the BBB fandom for quite a while, now. My apologies for anyone who was hopeful. |
