Grew up in Seattle, back the days of pre-antitrust Microsoft, coffeeshops owned by something besides Starbucks, and really high decibel, inarticulate music. Escaped to the right coast in earlier 90's and received a diploma in Information Systems from Johns Hopkins University. Although there, he began a career in health and useful information systems, with a focus on clinical trials and linked statistical programming and database modeling. This focus led him to many positions at Johns Hopkins, some sort of couple-year stint in private industry, teaching high higher education math and technology, and 24 months as the technology director for his local the school district.
