A native of Auckland, New Zealand, Leisa embarked on her artistic carrer in the late 1970′s when at the age 17 she abandoned the confines of formal art training, opting to learn her craft by traveling around New Zeland and capturing its rugged beauty on her canvas. She returned to Auckland, set up a studio and gallery, held her first solo art shows and enjoyed a successful six-year career specializing in landscapes and house portraits of historic buildings while becoming increasingly active in social issues.
