The Gold Standard for consistency is to be 100% compatible with the canon. In this area, one can usually strive no higher than the Gold Standard, but BMW as a fandom offers a greater opportunity. The writers of the show had initially intended to tell a somewhat different story than what they ended up with, leading to some inconsistencies in the plot. Stories in this fandom can ascribe to the Platinum Standard, in which they are more consistent with the show than the show is with itself, by correcting some of these plot holes. As a first step in the BMW Continuity Project, I offer the story Flight, which undertakes the ambitious goal of aligning season one with the rest of the show. The focus of this story is to explain the disappearances of several characters. For example, in the first season, both Topanga and Shawn had older sisters (Nebula and Stacey, respectively) for exactly one episode each. Flight also describes the reason that Stuart Minkus, a major character in season one, is scarcely seen after. Finally, and perhaps most centrally, the story offers an explanation for Topanga’s dramatic and curious personality shift after the first season. To accomplish all of these, Flight is necessarily a strange and wild tale. |
