Author has written 10 stories for Doctor Who, and Odyssey. Longtime fan of Doctor Who - my memory goes back as far as The Moonbase (Second Doctor) but I'm certain that it was already my favourite programme before then. Where do my stories come from? 1. Rory's Story - In The Wedding of River Song a Silent makes reference to him dying again and again, and I thought "what if he never gets the hang of dying?" and this is the result. There may be more to come if I can get it into some sort of coherent structure, but I'm quite happy with it as a one-shot if not. 2. Mrs. Williams at the Graveside - I wanted to know how it all ended. 3. Voice Interface - I was thinking about Beckett's play Krapp's Last Tape and thought that the post-Manhattan, post-River Doctor might be doing something similar on his cloud in Victorian London. My initial thought was some sort of diary, but then I remembered the voice interface... 4. Walking the Sands - The image of John Hurt trudging across the desert shouldering a sack containing the mightiest weapon in the universe was a powerful one, demanding a story. I also wanted to know more about the Time War (and what makes it a time war as opposed to an ordinary(?!) space war) Current Projects: I have an idea for a story about Katarina (short-lived companion of the first Doctor, and the first companion to die), which is still in the planning stage. I have the beginnings of a second chapter for Rory's Story, but I'm not sure about the direction it's going. We'll see. Likes a) Fics that add to canon - What happened to [character] after they left? What's [character]'s backstory? What's the history of [character's hometown]/[character's family]? b) Views from the gallery - Canon events seen from an unusual perspective (e.g. an ordinary person who's not involved in the events of the story, but is in a position to observe some or all of their effects. e.g.2 a minion/mook/redshirt.) c) OCs that open up areas of story that canon characters can't. - e.g one of the people saved by the heroes dealing with the aftermath of a canon story. ...so, basically anything canon-compliant I suppose :D Fanfic Pet Hates Summaries: a) "I suck at summaries" - you probably suck at writing too. I won't be reading your fic. b) "we all know that..." [something that didn't happen should have happened, or vice versa] ... - no we don't. I won't be reading your fic. c) Mention of an OC by name, without any description of them or reference to them being an OC. - I don't know who that is, but it sounds like you're making them more important than canon characters. That's not for me - I won't be reading your fic. Content: a) AUs that only exist to place a beloved character where they don't belong, or remove a hated character from where they do belong. - By all means place a character in a non-canon position, but do it because you have an interesting story to tell, not just because of your personal like/dislike for the character. b) AUs that place canon characters in a completely random non-canon setting (e.g. the crew of the Enterprise working in a coffee shop in Boston (if you've written a story of that description, I haven't seen it, so I'm not pointing the finger at you specifically)) - If you want to write a story in that setting, why not use original characters? c) Most M/MA-rated fics. - I quite like good erotic fiction, but if the original wouldn't be rated M/MA, it won't feel right to me in fanfic. d) Non-canon ships. - as with c), it doesn't feel right to me. |
