Author has written 5 stories for Knight Rider, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Let Me In, 2010. This is my new account as I have been locked out of my regular account due to an error (most likely on my part, lol) This is the page where you'll find the Knight Rider/Let Me In Crossover from the other one, but I will be updating it. (finally!) I will also be posting a KR/Sat-AM crossover series I wrote 10 years ago. Now, I know what you might be thinking - Knight Rider & Sonic? Yes, it's a little out there and OTT, I grant. But I try to write the story in a somewhat realistic and mature tone. By mature - I try to write it as straight as possible and not have it feel cartoony or contrived. And also by mature, I don't mean I will be posting stories of graphic nature. No. More on the lines that there are steaks and consequences A few things I had to change when writing this crossover: Because the lead protagonist from the Knight Rider side (the OC) is 25 when we first meet him, I felt some of the Sonic characters had to be aged up. Which is why Sally is written as being 20 because it would just look questionable if I had written her as the age she was in the series, which was 16 at the time. I just knew that wouldn't fly, which is why Sonic is aged up to 19. I thought that was an important precident to establish in the differences in maturity between her and Sonic. The other necessity that I wanted to establish is that because this was being treated somewhat realistically that the Sonic characters had to be anatomically correct physically. Since these were 2 worlds colliding with each other I knew that there had to be a form of consistency and also I felt that the way in which Sally was designed for the TV show in a real-world setting her neck would never support her head with the way it was drawn. And I write Sonic as being 5 feet tall with Sally being 5"1 Like the late Ben Hurst - I see these characters as people. I reflect this in the writing because these characters are written as sentient beings with rational, intelligent thought and having humanoid physical forms and behaviours that was the way to move forward. Animals don't have rational, sentient thought. This is something I feel like I need to address because I get asked these questions a lot since 2006 1: why did you create Knight Rider Special (aka Knight Rider Sat AM)? A: honestly? Because it was an idea that rang alarm bells in my head. I had watched an episode from Season 1 of Sat AM (Scrolls episode to be more specific) and then I watched an episode of the original Knight Rider after that and thought 'what would happen if those 2 worlds came together?' I felt Sat Am was a logical choice due to the darker and more realistic tone to compliment KR with. While Knight Rider has it's humorous moments it's still treated seriously with sending the right message to its audience. And because I already had an existing fan-storyline set up with Modo & KITT I felt it was easy enough to have KRS being a continuation/spin-off from that continuity. 2: Where did the idea come from to make Modo & Sally a pairing? A: Originally? That was not in the plan. The concept to begin with is that it was only KITT that would have gone to Mobius and assisted the Freedom Fighters and have him sent back when his purpose was complete. As so often, plans change to be able to fit the story. I've always admired and adored the character of Sally Acorn with her selfless-attitude, intelligence, resourceful nature, refusal to quit mentality and having a heart of gold despite her strong exterior. The idea of pairing them up was something that happened organically. Almost as an after-thought. I just looked at the idea and thought 'why not?'. The rest is history. A: they're entitled to their opinion. But really? It's just a story. Granted, it's a story I care about because I want it to be good so that the audience appreciates what I'm trying to do. At the end of the day if the only thing they can spend their time doing is constantly complain how 2 people from 2 different worlds in space in a story should not be together then they can't lead very interesting lives, can they? Also? I find there's a HUGE double-standard with regards to this subject. With Rodger & Jessica Rabbit (while the story is comedic based) no one says a word. Spock's Mother & Father in Star Trek (Vulcan & human respectively)? Not one word. And the many different Alien women that Captain Kirk has flirted and had one-night affairs with in Star Trek? Not even a raised finger. Superman & Lois Lane? (Kryptonian & human respectively)? People are chill with it. (Granted Kryptonians look exactly like humans. But the point still stands!) Inter-species relationships in Star Wars? Not so much as an eyebrow. Hana & the Wolfman in Wolf Children (human & werewolf respectively)? Fans and critics praised that anime movie! Buffy & Angel/Buffy & Spike/Angel & Cordelia in Buffy The Vampire & Angel, respectively (Human & Vampire pairings)? You see how this list effectively writes itself?? The point stands - if they're not gonna pull that excuse with those beloved franchises, then they can't use that excuse for Modo & Sally. I see the two of them as equal beings. Yes. One is a human from Earth and the other is a humanoid-ground squirrel from Mobius. But this is where I look passed that detail and answer with this: if they're a sentient humanoid life-form with intelligent thought and speech with a good heart? They’re a PERSON. Not an animal! As the sad truth is - some people can't separate fiction from reality. Now by extension - I think reality most of the time can be a boring, Hospital-sterile and depressing place when it wants to be. That's why people make movies, tv shows, music, video games, comics, fiction and fan-fiction. It's a means of amusement to have some form of escapism because this is a real thing btw - it's a good thing for the human mind to just relax and SWITCH-OFF! Because the mind needs time to rest as much as it needs to be kept well-oiled. So? Long-story-short - their opinion. They're entitled to it. But it's my story. Don't like it? Don’t read it. Not my problem! 4: Did you ever intend it to be a series? A: No. I wrote Knight of the Stars 1 just as a means of just trying the idea out. See what kind of reaction I would get. One user said that I had blended the two stories together perfectly. That was when I knew I had hit a result. It was when I was writing the last Chapter that I wanted to set the story up for a sequel. Because by that point I was getting ideas to make it longer, wilder, more action-packed and to use an idea that came to me during the writing of KRS 1 as I wrote Modo & Sally getting to know each other and closer together that I felt this was too good of an idea to leave alone. A: I felt it was important to make this where an audience could see the subtle tones of what it was doing yet not cross the line and just be straight-out ultra-dark, violent, crass or seedy. I think the late Glen A. Larson said it best when describing the original Knight Rider You can have action without Over the Top violence, comedy without being crass and romance without being sleazy. And I gravitated towards that tone and direction. That was how I wanted KRS to be. And that was the tone I wanted for Modo & Sally's relationship as well. tongue n cheek and not straight-up naughty. It's innocent, sincere with a little bit of cheekiness. I didn't want to do an ultra-grim-gritty, dark, realistic setting because if I'm being honest here? That idea/concept has been beaten to the ground more times than Vince McMahon has lost his mind. XFL, WBF, anyone??? As for WWE Great Balls of Fire that's coming this July...????? I got nothing! Just RETIRE already! I wanted to have a tone where there are high-stakes, but not have it be so dark that the characters don't have any moments of rejoice. Because I'm tired of seeing that in Movies, TV, Games and Comic books today. The problem is, and a lot of this can be traced back to Batman Begins. For the direction of that movie series - it worked. Batman is a dark character because of his origins and how he carries out his vigilante justice. And the movie answered the question of how a realistic Batman could be done. The problem is most Studios have taken that format/template and applied to their properties and I see the repeated tropes where you see a tormented/soiled protagonist in some many forms of entertainment that I ask the question "why can't you find your own voice?" find your own story/direction. I'd rather see trend-setters than trend-followers. Be inspired and pay tribute to what inspired you, by all means. I have no problem with that. There's a difference between paying homage/respect and just straight-up copying someone. And I really can't stand that. A: See...there were a few that I had a blast working on that it's difficult to nail it down to just one. I would say Knight of the Stars 2 is probably my most favoured because of the sheer scale and volume of the story. Robotnik coming to Earth attempting to repeat what he had done to Mobotropolis, The Freedom fighters experiencing life on Earth, reuniting Modo & Sally (which if I'm honest had a lot to do with the reason for the sequel existing :) ) the action sequences where Modo risks life and limb to get the job, showing how valuable Sally's help is to FLAG, making Sally the one to pop the question to Modo (it's nice to break from tradition now and then), bringing back KARR and having him more lethal than before and to setting the story up for more sequels. Jurassic Knights was a lot of fun too. Not as big in scale as Knight of the Stars 2, but at the same time I wanted that right level of tension and fright that you would get from Jurassic Park and put in within the fan-fic setting. Plus, I had always wanted there to be a story mixing Knight Rider with dinosaurs. It also gave me a chance to show how Sally had adapted to life on Earth and being a Knight and Partner with Modo & KITT and how she would react to her first Christmas with them. Lastly, I loved working on Knights out of Time where it's basically referencing Back to the Future and by this point this is where the fan-fic series is pretty-much sci-fi. But that said, I felt like I had thrown the rule book out of the window and kept to the rules that I was writing. Because again, sometimes you have to break the mould in order to establish your own ideas. 7: Modo seems like a tortured soul in places. Why does he have this origin? A: In order to have a good protagonist, you have to get the audience to care about them. And the idea of MJ just being a Knight for FLAG without any major form of tragedy/trauma just wouldn't work. I use the story of Mara Hayfield. A somewhat mythic character in the series that serves as Modo's motivation to become a Knight when she is killed in front of him when she takes the bullet for him years before he becomes KITT's partner. In KRS, the origin is established that she died from blood loss due to gun-shot on her 19th Birthday where Modo was going to propose to her. In KRMS it's pretty-much the same except I altered this to her being killed on his Birthday which then adds more dramatic effect and him wanting to avoid his Birthday like the plague each year after. This in-turn makes him somewhat of a vulnerable character because he's looking for value and worth and ultimately redemption because he believes it was his fault that she died and that it should have been him. He carries a lot of emotional weight and guilt wearing his heart on a sleeve because he tries to find that redemption each time he looks in the mirror looking for atonement for his inability to act, in his mind only. A: This is a yes and no answer. Yes, because he sees a chance at happiness with her because he had distanced himself from so many women before (this is more so in KRMS) that he doesn't want anyone else to lose their lives because of him. He looks at Sally and thinks 'oh my gosh!' this woman is beautiful in mind and appearance, and he makes it his goal not to lose her at all. This is where he sees his shot at redemption to save the woman he loves and not repeat the mistakes of the past. And he takes it. Because he knows he won't get a second chance. This is the no-part of the answer: She gets him to understand and admit that there was nothing he could have done to prevent Mara’s death as everything had happened so quickly. Essentially convincing him to admit that he's not perfect and that he can't save everyone. Try as he might. She is the common-sense to his emotional get-go drive. She will look at the pros and cons where he thinks with his heart, and not so much his mind. Modo is very intelligent and strategic despite his hot-headedness at times. It's why I have him and Michael Knight like a father-son dynamic. They're very similar. A: I wanted there to be a conflict but at the time I felt that it would slow the pace of the story down as I wanted it to be very action-driven and keep the momentum going. When I came round to doing the reboot with MS I knew I had that opportunity to explore this and have the tension with Sonic feeling defensive in that he feels that his girl is being taken from him. Some have criticised me for taking that direction and that's fine. Particularly in Sat AM: Sonic & Sally are a good couple. But for the purposes of MS I still wanted Modo & Sally to be a couple (MoSally or Sal-Do. Whichever your preference) but for there to be consequences. Hence, Sonic not being ok with this pairing. Which is why MS has a more realistic, darker and mature tone compared to it's original counterpart. Because MJ really suffers A LOT of flashbacks whenever his Birthday happens or to when certain lights trigger his repressed memories of Mara being gunned down in front of him. It was a chance to explore his story more and at the same time expand on the relationship dynamic more between him and Sally as you get to see the two bond and become closer to the point that she's not prepared to leave his side. She sees the pain he has suffered and in her heart knows no good person should suffer this. She takes it upon herself to show him the way to FINALLY put this behind him and accept that there was NOTHING he could have done to save Mara. It's not something he wanted to admit. And yet? he felt free when he did. Free of denial. A: 3 years ago, I would have said no. As I had ran out of steam on MS 4 years before that. But then I recently had a change of heart and decided to return to this as I felt the "pull" again after reading some fan-comics on here and then going back to read some of the stories I had written - remembering why I enjoyed this to begin with. So, never say never. I didn't think I would come back to this and find some engagement with it and yet here we are. With KRMS? Absolutely. There will be a sequel. With KRS? I dunno. I mean where do you go after killing Michael Knight off in the story? But we'll see... If I have the right idea for the right story then who knows? But that's always the thing...you gotta let the idea find you. Not the other way round. A: Modo & Sally. When I named KRS, I just came up with 'Special' to distinguish it from my previous series on the spur of the moment, but not having the knowledge that there was a game back in the day with same said title. That said hindsight is always 20-20. When naming the reboot series, I again wanted to distinguish it from the previous series, but wanted to be somewhat clever about it when expanding on the relationship. Originally it was going to be called Knight Rider Max but grew to dislike that option the more I wrote the story. I recall MS popping into my head and thought that could be a good way of being cryptic yet at the same time show the tone of where I was taking this series. Because this was going to be more expansive on the characters' stories (Modo & Sally specifically). I found that KRS was almost like a rollercoaster ride at times with little breaks in the action and when MS came along when I found those breaks and had the time to explore the story and relationships in much more depth. Hope that answers some question some of you may have had about these series. Thanks for your time. |
