When Shadow got the news of his lover's successful rescue, he was overjoyed. When he returned to the Resistance base and Sonic would barely look at him, he was confused. When he learned of the reason why, he was ready to go and unleash hell on the responsible person's head.

When Sonic looked at his battle scars, he saw the events that had created them. When Shadow looked at them, he saw what they had created.

Loyalty is something Shadow values greatly. He isn't fickle in his allegiances but he is not above pretending he is if it means protecting those he cares about.
