Author has written 14 stories for Teen Titans, Evangelion, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica/魔法少女まどか★マギカ. To increase the quality of fanfiction (dot) net stories, I’m going to delve into this meditation about them. I have found that with fanfics, it’s not the idea, but the execution. The idea could be immensely innovative, and yet if the fic is written incorrectly, it means nothing. Ideas don’t determine how good a fic is. I have read many fics with good ideas, yet they hurt me the moment I read them. Trust me on this one, bad fanfics hurt! The reason that there are very few fanfics with bad ideas and good executions is because a good execution tends to create good ideas. I actually have only read one fic with an idea I thought was bad and it was still a good fic; it was actually kind of surprising. A truly good author can make good fics regardless of the quality of the idea. With good execution, even if a fic has an idea or couple you dislike, you’ll still read regardless because it is just so good. A good author can make his characters out of character and get away with it, because the story is just so good you won’t notice, and even if you do, that doesn’t diminish the value of the fic. Truly accomplished authors can take an idea clichéd to heck and make it new again. The point is it’s not what you write; it’s how you write it. |
