Mount Everest — a Thor story Monroe Lopez •History: Monroe Elizabeth Lopez was born on August 11, 1990, in the Bronx borough of New York City, to a Puerto Rican father and Spanish and Dominican mother. She has an older sister, Lourdes, and a younger half-brother, Christopher. When Monroe was two, her father left the family and she was brought up in relative poverty by her single mother. Her mother often had to work three jobs in order to support them. During her childhood, at around eleven, Monroe’s mutant powers emerged. She spent most of her academic career in Catholic schools, finishing at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters after being recruited. Monroe excelled athletically rather than academically, competing in track and gymnastics. At nineteen, she became a stripper in order to escape domestic violence, having been in an abusive relationship at the time. Becoming a stripper helped her earn enough money to escape the dire situation and get an education. She enrolled in Borough of Manhattan Community College before eventually dropping out. She lied to her friends and family saying she was earning money babysitting. •Appearance: Monroe is a dark-skinned mutant with long, curly hair and dark brown eyes. Due to her love for sports, and from years of training at Xavier’s School, Monroe has a very athletic build. •Personality: Monroe is generally polite and very protective of her friends, doing whatever she can to help them. She pities humans who hate mutants as she believes they are unfortunate not to understand with their eyes. She dislikes fighting, unless she is forced to do so, in order to defend herself. Despite her pacifistic side Monroe is a talented fighter and can easily hold her own against adversaries and is courageous when necessary. •Powers and Abilities: 1.) Sleep Inducement: Monroe has the ability to put people to sleep by turning her eyes completely black. The victim’s eyes would do the same before passing out. 2.) Acoustikinesis: Monroe has the mutant ability to create powerful sonic waves with her voice with which she can achieve various feats. i.) Echolocation: Monroe can generate sound waves that ricochet off objects and then back at her. ii.) Nausea Inducement: By producing an extremely high-frequency, Monroe can make people sick and lose their coordination. iii.) Sonic Scream: Monroe has the ability to scream at sonic levels that are loud and destructive. Her screams are deafening to nearby humans and can shatter solid objects, such as glass, or scare away animals. iv.) Sonokinetic Flight: Monroe has the ability to fly at subsonic speeds by screaming supersonic waves toward the ground, in order to propel herself through the air and ride via sound waves. When using this ability, Monroe can carry at least one passenger. 3.) Enhanced Hearing: Monroe can hear her own sonar even if it is outside the audible range of a normal human. She is also able to detect sound at any frequency or hertz so long as the vibration reach her ears. Her ear drums are not vulnerable to loud noises. 4.) Master Acrobat: Monroe is highly skilled in incorporating gymnastics and acrobatics into her fighting style as she battles opponents. 5.) Expert Martial Artist: Monroe is an extremely skilled and formidable martial artist and hand-to-hand combatant, excelling in improvisation. She employs mixed martial arts that include elements of boxing, taekwondo, and Capoeira. 6.) Bilingualism: Monroe is fluent in English and Spanish. •Weaknesses: Monroe can lose control when she’s flying. If her screams aren’t at the right angle, or even not loud enough, she won’t stay airborne; if she’s caught off guard, she’ll lose control and possibly crash; etc. In order for her to knock someone unconscious via sleep inducement, they have to be making direct eye contact with her. The vibrations of a certain frequency/hertz has to reach her ears in order for her to detect it. •Additional Information: Monroe’s mother, Carolina, had a brief relationship with another man that resulted in Christopher’s birth. Carlos, Monroe’s father, had left years prior. Christopher is six years younger than Monroe. Lourdes is four years older than her sister. Initially, Carlos’ abandonment caused Monroe a lot of distress growing up. Once she reached adulthood, however, she learned to put all of that behind her. Carlos wasn’t coming back, as far as she was concerned, and she came to accept it. Monroe had her first serious boyfriend when she was seventeen. He was also very abusive, which is why Monroe chose to go into stripping, as a way to get away and get money. She dumped him shortly after turning nineteen. Xavier’s School gave her a better foundation. While Carolina made sure her kids were independent and responsible, there wasn’t a lot of foundation in Monroe’s life. A lot of the students and staff at Xavier’s School became some of Monroe’s closest friends. Carolina and Lourdes weren’t very supportive of Monroe being a mutant. That became the basis for her pitying humans who don’t like mutants. Monroe’s paternal grandparents were from Puerto Rico and her mother came from the Dominican Republic, whose own mother came from Spain. Sports were an outlet for her to release pent up emotions. |
