Squire Gwendolyn of Merrywood was only relying on reflex when she saved Crowned Prince Roald of Conte from an assassination attempt. The Scanran war is over, and Dom is now Captain of First Company. Ahead is much hard work, as Lord Raoul plans further reforms to the King's Own and Dom tries to sort through his feelings and figure out what, if anything, he wants from a certain lady knight.

The killing machines may have been destroyed, but war with Scanra continues. Kel still has her refugees to protect, and the long northern winter to get through, before fighting picks up again in the spring. Picks up at the end of Lady Knight.

Sucked into an elaborate scheme, Kel and Dom have no idea that Alanna and Raoul are matchmaking to the extreme. But what happens when their foolproof plan develops a dangerous flaw?
