Not much to say about me, really, I'm female, from England, and the rest is irrelevant. I'm a manga/anime/RPG fan, and have been reading and writing fanfiction for years. Over which period I have seen a LOT of fiction, good, bad, and very, very ugly. This is my reviewing account, I highly doubt there will be any stories posted here by me. This site is flooded with fanfic's every day, and most of them aren't worth the space they're uploaded to. You know the ones, and they have to stop. I created this account so I could speak my mind; I'm not going to midlessly flame you, and I will give praise where praise is due. I just want to try and clean up this site a little. here are some things I'll be looking out for: OC's: Why? Why on earth do so many people feel the need to create and add an own character to their fanfiction? If you like a series, you like the characters, so why change the entire plot line of the series by adding someone new who inevitably steals the limelight and swoons the main character. They're just annoying, and I have never been able to stand them. Song-fics: I will admit I have written one or two, seen the error of my ways and deleted them. A prime example is one I read a fe days ago which used an extremely long rap song, the entire song was written out with no more than about 10 lines of fiction that had no plot whatsoever. And then the author had the nerve to end it with an authors note declaring 'how well the song fit in with the story'. What story? Did I blink and miss it? And by the way; song-fics aren't allowed on ff.net anyway, so why run the risk of being reported and losing your account? Author's notes: I'm not talking about the few lines at the start or end, providing clear, concise information to the reader, I'm talking about the twenty pages before the three paragraph story begins, and the post-three-paragraph-story ten pages. The space in which the author randomly invites characters from the anime or game to talk to her and just waste the readers time. It's usually inscript format, too. Or perhaps I'm thinking of the random outbursts from the author during the fic, which completely disrupt the flow of the story and make it truly un-enjoyable. Grammar (or lack of): I went to a public school, and my English lessons consisted of twenty morons around me screaming and running around. I was in the top set. Anything I know I tought myself. I'm not perfect, no-one is, but I believe for the most part my work is up to a high(ish) standard. It takes practice, and that's what we're here for. But when a story contains text speak, script format or other grammar atrociates consistantly throughout, and the author doesn't even listen to reviewers trying to help, insteadlabelling them 'flamers' this is when it becomes annoying. Spelling: there is no real excuse. Microsoft has a flipping spell checker, for crying out loud! This site has a spell checker! Or you could just read through your work before posting, take some pride in your work! Japanese words: I just feel like banging my head against my keyboard sometimes. Again I ask why? People put in japanese words (usually misspelt), for example: "Yami, gomen (sorry), I didn't mean to." Why bother with the japanese at all if you're going to put the english equivalent next to it anyway? The words are usually used out of context, too, which just adds amusement for those of us that do study the Japanese language. Even worse is when they don't put the English next to it, when I first started out I had no idea what it meant and if they didn't translate at the end I missed part of the story. Why confuse your readers? If you want to use Japanese write a fanfic entirely in Japanese. Oh, you only know three Japanese words? 'Tis going to be a short fic, then... So, if you agree |
