Since folks appear to have been unable to have read my little intro line before, let me make things clear: I do write fanfiction - I choose not to post it on this account. Such a thing is not a crime. If I tell you that I will be back to finish a story, I will. I simply perhaps did not have time to sit and read through it all in one go. I'm sure several of you have encountered a similar situation. I comment frequently on grammar, because contrary to some authors, I believe that it does matter. After all, authors who violate the rules of grammar rarely get published. To break the rules, you must first learn them. This applies to anything, but especially to grammar. And I believe that even a basic grasp of grammar can make a fic that much more accessible to a wider range of audiences - I know several readers and authors who wouldn't even sit through what I've read, regardless of plot or characterization, because the grammar and/or spelling is horrible. That being said, I realize that I am not perfect. In fact, I've been known to make a typo or two in my reviews, or to leave a word out...but it's rare. I've long been under the impression that songfics were banned on FFN - indeed, I thought I once read something in the news section regarding it. However, it seems I have been mistaken. After searching through the guidelines, I did not find songfics. Nor are they listed as a reportable offense anymore, though they once were. I apologize to any and all authors to whom I commented on this - especially to those with whom I lost my temper. However, after checking the guidelines, I am still reassured that FFN does consider a severe lack of consideration for grammar a reportable offense, as well as RPFs, chat/script fics, you-fics, choose-your-own, etc. Regarding comments on plot and characterization: believe it or not, I usually slide at least one comment about the writer's ability overall (as I see it, that is) and how they grasp a particular character. Maybe it's buried among the comments I make regarding grammar, but it's almost always there. Look for it, before telling me that I do not comment on it. I have a final question: If, as many claim, I am such an idiot...why is it that I am the one making comments to authors, offering suggestions on improving grammar? Yes, I tend to be blunt - mostly because I too often encounter authors that refuse to listen to more polite suggestions. However, my suggestions really would help. Wouldn't the real idiot then, perhaps, be the one not willing to grow as a writer? |
