After the Storm: This was my first go at writing for Soul Eater, fanfiction, the pairing, and anything even mildly resembling romance. The first chapter was extremely light and easy to write; really rather fun. Before the second, I took a break to write Kyōmei, and came back focusing more on Soul and Maka's relationship through his piano playing--what it meant, what it must sound like--and started to feel more comfortable in what I was doing. I really loved chapter two--I think it's one of my favorites, actually--but I burned myself out a bit. I had originally planned on doing 3 chapters, the third dealing with (SPOILER) Maka becoming a weapon, but I've decided to call it quits at 2. I have more ideas for better things, and want to put my energy into that. Kyōmei: Written in between chapters one and two of After the Storm. I wanted to get a better grasp and feel for Soul, his imp, his piano playing, and what it felt like to write in insanity. I ended up writing it late one night very suddenly, which in part accounts for the difference in voice between this and After the Storm. That looser voice in writing is actually the one I prefer and use more often in my original fiction. I'd felt that I couldn't use this voice in fanfiction because it wouldn't be clear enough--you wouldn't understand what was going on--but because I was writing insanity, it seemed to fit. Metamorphosis: I punched the first chapter of this one out within a few hours, I think, when I was supposed to be helping with Fourth of July preparations...Suffer for your art, people. XD Anyway, for this story I wanted to get all the trouble of the set-up out of the way and just do concentrated fluff. And since it seems like so much of Soul and Maka's relationship is sixth-sense (resonance) and thought-centered in both anime and manga, it would be good to bring the much-overlooked other senses into the spotlight. Riddles: My original inspiration for this story was mostly based around wanting to ease my back into the SoulxMaka POV after my long hiatus. I was too frustrated, after losing my work on future chapters, to resume Metamorphosis, but I really liked the style of single-word-themed one-shots all tied together. So I compiled a list of my favorite words (shut up--you know you have them too), and created little slice of life drabbles around a few of them as seen in chapters 3 & 5. After finishing those, I realized that they wouldn't work as a stand-alone story, so I chose the word "Riddle" (another one from my list) to create a mini-plot around and tie it all together. For me looking at it as a finished product, it is one of the stories that I'm least fond of--it's definitely a "warm-up" kind of story. Because while the plotline was more complex than other stories I've done, the quality of the prose suffered. Regardless, it was way fun and quick ride with really fantastic support from readers with each chapter. :) One More Thing: There isn't much to explain with this one. I re-watched the movie & reread the book recently and remembered how adorable I found this pairing. Decided to do something that would be easy, innocent, and sweet. :) May or may not revisit this fandom later on. Should actually read the sequels first, hm? Fine Lines: Long story short, I got tired of writing completely serious things. Half the reason why I love the series is for the fact that it's got these fantastically humorous characters. I have a deep and abiding love for both BlackStar and Spirit, and I wanted to get them involved while still dipping into SoulxMaka implications. Similarly to Riddles, I started this one by coming up with the basic ideas and chapter titles first, and then flushing it out as I went along. It's meant to progress in time as the chapters continue, and as relationships become "fuller". I also cut out a lot of the author's notes, especially from the beginning section, as I feel like my stories should speak for themselves for the most part. From the beginning, I had about eight chapters written out roughly, and have been editing one a week to post here. However, I plan on having nine or ten (sorry, Kid!) to make things good and even, and to add closure. |
