After an evening out, Hermione ends up at Malfoy's place, and things don't end as hoped. More confused than ever, Hermione returns to the Ministry and aims to avoid him as much as possible—a desire that turns impossible once the Minister of Magic assigns them to the same project. Unable to escape him, Hermione soon discovers that there are layers to Malfoy she has yet to uncover.

The wizarding community has not quite bounced back in terms of numbers since the end of the war. Desperate times call for desperate measures and a Marriage Law is enacted by the Ministry.
