![]() Author has written 6 stories for Princess Mononoke. Wanna see my website which I threw together in about one day and rarely really update? Check it out here: Update: I, I, ay, am, I'm still alive, hey-ee-ey! New chapter is up. Also, I've decided this - no more sequel stories. It makes it more work for the reader, and I don't want my early work to see the light of day even if that means I don't promote them at all. About Me My real first name is Michael and I live in California. I've always liked writing, art, and music; was never much for math and science (love history though). I'm currently working towards a degree in visual effects with a focus in compositing. Some of my liberal arts classes have revolved around storytelling and writing (which is why my first six stories are rather shameful, but I suppose they could be worse). Outside of writing and art, my hobbies include playing music on guitar or bass (mostly rock and metal), running or playing D&D games, and reading about history. I watch quite a bit of anime, though not as much as some; same goes for video games. In addition to all that, I lift weights, practice Brazilian jitsu, do archery on the weekends, cycle, and box to keep my weight in check. I write as often as I can, which means not nearly as much as I used to be able to ever since I started working full time while taking four online college courses. Still, I love to write and will probably continue posting onto this site. If you want to see some work of mine that is not writing, check out my band Voadicia on Bandcamp or SoundCloud. Notes about my stories and stories I've worked on (contains spoilers): Enemy Mine: This was my first ever piece of writing. I will never look back on it. For someone of my level, I'm sure it's fine, but looking back on it years later makes my flesh crawl, like if a thousand spiders were writhing under my skin. It was difficult to write for a few reasons, namely that it was my first piece of writing and I hadn't really mapped out the plot. Its name has changed a few times, but it probably won't change anytime soon. Into the Jaws of the Wolf: Of everything I've written, this one is one I can still look back on and like. It went through several title changes and some ideas were "The Wolf King" and "The Alpha Wolf". I chose its current title because it describes a struggle and has the wolf motif going on. Overall, I thought this turned out very well, even if it is a bit sappy. I actually rewrote the ending long after publishing it; there's a very good chance that you've never seen the original ending, and I'm glad about that because it was terribly written in every way possible. What happens is still what happened in the original, but the wording was changed to make it more tolerable. The Gate to the Second World: The more I think of how I ended this story, the more I dislike it as a whole. It feels disjointed at times, not as well written as I remember, and I will always hate the deus ex machina ending. I'm still not sure if I should have stayed the course instead or just had a different plot to avoid that situation completely. Either way, it's still better than my first story and probably on par with my fifth. Catch the Rainbow: The title is taken from the Rainbow song Catch the Rainbow. The song itself is a love song, a very romantic one (also can be a bit sad depending on how you interpret the lyrics). I chose the title because it makes me think of reaching a dream thought impossible. The cover for this one works out pretty well, in my opinion, even if it isn't quite relevant until the middle to later parts of the story. I hate the early chapter names not titled "Prologue". This is the first story I've done that is not driven by the goal to stop a demon. It has far less action, but I'm trying to prove to myself that I don't need buckets of blood to write a good story. While there is still a bit of violence and there's one part in chapter eight where I describe the dead pirates pretty gruesomely, it isn't the main conflict. Okay, the executions are also pretty brutal, but they're still not really the main point of conflict. I'm happy with how it turned out. I like the ending the most out of every story I've written so far. Why, you may ask? Well, it doesn't end with poorly written make-out scenes, even more poorly-done sex, and it most definitely doesn't end with a stupid resurrection piece of garbage. The only thing I regret about this story is that it's shorter than my others (about 7000 words less than my first story), but I suppose less is more. It is heavily influenced from lyrics from the eponymous Rainbow song and the Guns 'N Roses song, "November Rain", which is also a chapter name. The aforementioned chapter was also influenced (to a lesser extent) by two other songs: Guns 'N Roses's "Estranged" and Black Sabbath's "Changes". All in all, this is my personal favorite piece of writing I've done. Good Friends, Better Enemies: This took a good amount of time to write since this is really where time started to slip away from me. While I think it's fine, I think I should have done more with Eboshi and San's relationship dynamic. All in all, it isn't my personal favorite, but it's a solid #3 in my opinion. It isn't as tightly written as I'd like it, but still keeps itself together throughout without dragging too much. Should I have gone for a different ending? Probably, but it's too late to do anything but regret at this point. *Elemental Book Cycle I: The first story with which I collaborated but don't actually own. I got a random request from one day from a friend of the author and was asked if I could give ideas and write things here and there. Quite a bit that is seen in the actual stories comes directly from me; I'm not sure what changes are made by the author, aside from the bold forewords at the start. A lot of what I contribute was written at my workplace because I was too busy at home to write anything, even stories I wanted to write. This was due to work, college, holidays, and Fallout 4. The Oncoming Night: Although not finished, I'll comment on it now. This story is proof that less is more. While I don't think this is the worst thing I've written, it wasn't what I hoped it would be. It feels like it drags, becomes disjointed, and becomes reptitive. There were times when I didn't have fun writing, and that's not good for anyone. It relies too much on battles and doesn't really feel like a Ghibli story. Granted, while I wasn't really trying to go for a Ghibli style story, it strays so far from the film's message that I can't help but feel a bit miffed at the plot and story. There was a massive gap in chapters 24 and 25 while I was basically trying to get everything in my life in order. Note: * = collaborative story |
