Pronunciation and Spelling: There is a bit of confusion about certain things, and I just wish to clear them up a bit. Cyclopes. The plural of Cyclops. Cyclopes, however, is not pronounced like Cyclops. It is pronounced Sigh-Klo-Pees. Okay. We're moving into diphthongs now. Au- Pronounced just like ow. Ai- If you're Hebrew, you pronounce this i like in the name Mordecai, but if you're Greek you pronounce it like a long a, as in daimons, or Gaia. Ae- Pronounced like i, as in Gaea or in Daedalus, no matter you're lineage. I love the Space Program, and that is why my favorite day in the year that isn't a holiday is October 4th, the day that Sputnik was launched and the day that the Space Race began. If you haven't yet seen October Sky, you have to. It is based on the book, The Rocket Boys, by Homer H. Hiccom Jr., and he based it on his life. It is the year 1957, and there is a town in West Virginia called Coalwood. Homer's father is the boss of the mining operation, and he wants Homer to follow in his older brother's footsteps, meaning playing football. But after seeing Sputnik move across the night sky (technically it was the booster rocket, Sputnik was too small), all he wants to do is fly rockets. After an early one, Auk 1, almost hit his father's office, Homer and his friends are banned from flying rockets on company property. So they walk the nine miles to Snake's Creek, and create the Coalwood Missile Agency. They are allowed to fly their rockets there, though the way that they raise the money for the steel is illegal ( so is their rocket fuel). Then one day, Homer and his friends could not account for the Auk 13. Yet a rocket had just landed near an airport, creating a fire. I hope these lists will make you laugh out loud, but if they do not, oh well. 3 Things to do if you are a Harry Potter and Percy Jackson fan: 1. Stand on a chair in the middle of a crowded room and yell, "Constant Vigilance!" 2. In the middle of a conversation, randomly say, "Draco Malfoy is just a code name for Luke Castellan." If the person you're talking to disagrees, insist that it true until they give up. 3. Every time that you are given a piece of paper, act sneaky and tap it with a pen or pencil, saying, "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good." 21 Do and Don't: 1. Don't: Call Dumbledore "Chief Lector Iskandar", they are only distant relatives. 2. Don't: Tell the first years that thestrals are Nyx's horses and that they will drink their blood if the first years make Snape (a.k.a. Nyx's husband) angry. It will scare the little children and make Snape angry. 3. Don't: Tell McGonagall that you know her cousin, Frank Zhang. She wil not appreciate it. 4. Do: Tell Ron that there are giant spiders living in all of the boys bathrooms. Especially when we are all in need of a laugh. 5. Don't: Replace all of the healing potions with nectar, as witches and wizards are mortals, and they will certainly die a painful death. 6. Do: Cover Umbridge with blood while she is sleeping and (somehow) carry her out into the forbidden forest. 7. Don't: Put Harry and Draco into an empty classroom and seal the door with a permanent sticking charm. As hilarious as this might seem at first, they will most likely both end up dead. 8. Do: Hex all of the Slytherins so that they will do the opposite of what they are trying to do. 9. Do: When the Slytherins have figured out how to work around the hex in number 8, hex them again and again and again... 10. Do: Bewitch all of the pictures of Gilderoy Lockhart so that he is wearing the same clothes as Neville's grandmother. 11. Don't: Ask Cedric about Bella every time you see him. This will make the girls jealous, and you do not want girls jealous. 12. Do: Proclaim that you are Peeves' sidekick, and will help him re-paint the paintings so that the subjects are completely covered in hair. 13. Do: After you have finished the changes to the paintings, charm so that they can never be restored. 14. Don't: Give Hagrid a Hungarian Horntail for Christmas, said this will be highly frowned upon by the Ministry of Magic. 15. Do: Tell Filch that Madam Pince wants to date him. Then film his reaction. (This would be soooo funny). 16. Don't: Spike Snape's pumpkin juice with veritaserum at the start-of-school-feastand then ask him if he ever liked anybody. This will make him kill you. 17. Don't: Tell Umbridge how she looks so much like a toad that one time Neville mistook her for Trevor. She is infamous for her punishments. 18. Don't: Imperious Mrs. Norris so that she kills herself. Filch will kill you, even if Dumbledore forbids him to. 19. Don't: When it is Christmas time, replace the candles in the trees with fireworks. We do not want the Great Hall to be on fire. 20. Don't: Tell the house-elves that for the end-of-school feast, Dumbledore wants only Klingon dishes to be served. Everyone will go hungry. 21. Don't: Lock Snape in the prefect's bathroom until he washes his hair. Even though everyone will thank you endlessly, Snape will kill you with the most painful way possible. 20 Things to remember if you love books (and sometimes think that they are real): 1. Not all children of Hermes are in Slytherin and they will get angry if you say that they are. 2. Smaug is not related to the Hungarian Horntail. 3. Neither are Saphira, Thorn, Glaedr, and Firnen. 4. Never get your coins mixed up: drachmas, denarii, red gold, knuts, sickles, and galleons have different exchange rates. 5. If you survived the Giant War, it does not mean that you are eligible to fight in the Hunger Games. 6. Just because you are an elf, it does not mean that you know alf seidr. 7. When you ride a sandworm, use your maker hooks. Celestial Bronze blades do not have the same effect. 8. The reason that Day hates the Republic and can run so fast is that they really want to cut his hair. 9. Seamus Finnigan is not Leo Valdez, no matter if they both can spontaneously burst into flames. 10. Paul Atreides, Percy Jackson, and Harry Potter are not the same person, even if they all have green eyes and black hair and at one point in their lives each dated red-headed girl. 11. A blue hairbrush is always the weapon of choice when fighting a Titan. 12. If faced by Fluffy, remember your stash of red rubber balls. 13. If an angry dragon is flying straight at you, do not forget that they love dwarven mead. 14. The Whomping Willow is just a socially awkward dryad. 15. In Ender's game, the guns just preform the Petrificus Totalus Full-Body Bind, they don't do anything else. 16. Never offer a knarl milk. 17. Never enlarge an Ashwinder. 18. Zeus is a teenager who electrocutes himself in water, not the king of Olympus. 19. A Ra'zac is just a giant insect that wants to eat you. 20. Kanes are as hated as Darth Vader was, so do not mention to a magician that you know Sadie, because they will kill you immediately. Why Voldemort died: (I know that you are thinking,"This guy's crazy. Harry killed Voldemort." Well, not so much.) 1. He thought that what Snape relayed of the prophecy was all of it that was important. You would, too, if you were told a piece of a prophecy by your trusted follower. "The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches./ Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies." Hmmm... Longbottom or Potter? Pure-Blood or Half- Blood? Difficult choice. In the end, Voldemort chose the half-blood, like him, not the pure-blood, like most of his followers. 2. He didn't understand love. Voldemort thought that he could just kill who he wanted to, because he considered himself as the most powerful wizard. Yet the only one he ever feared, Dumbledore, was armed with love, something that Voldemort never realized was strong enough to one day match him. 3. He never knew what blood can do. Voldemort used Harry's blood to regain his body, yet the magic of Lily's love was in the blood itself. Having taken the blood into his veins, Voldemort bound himself to Harry even more strongly. 4. He thought that Severus defeated Dumbledore. Voldemort thought that the only way to gain the Elder Wand's loyalty was to kill its owner. This is not true. The second that it is defeated, i.e., disarmed, it recognizes as its new master the one who disarmed it. Therefore, Severus was not the owner, but Draco, then Harry. Never Voldemort. 5. He lost track of his Horcruxes. Voldemort never thought that he had more than six Horcruxes. Yet when he tried to kill Harry and his curse rebounded against him because of Lily's sacrifice, a piece of his soul latched onto Harry, making him the sixth Horcrux. (Nagini was made into a Horcrux after the death of Bertha Jorkins). 6. He did not know that the Elder Wand would never go against its master. When he tried to kill Harry in the clearing in the Forbidden Forest, the Elder Wand did preform the Killing Curse, but it would not kill Harry. So, what was in Harry but was not Harry, and could be destroyed if it's housing was? That's right! The bit of Voldemort's soul! So the curse destroyed the piece of soul while killing Harry. 7. The blood. Again. Voldemort can not die while Harry lives, because of the magic in the blood that they share. 8. He did not understand the power of love. Harry was willing to give up his life for his friends'. Even though he did not, the magic is still binding, and no curse that Voldemort casts on the protectors of Hogwarts lasts for long. So when he forces Neville to demonstrate the new Sorting method, Neville instead pulls the Sword of Gryffindor from the Sorting Hat and kills Nagini. Thus, the last Horcrux is destroyed and Voldemort is mortal again. 9. The prophecy. " And either must die at the hand of the other, for neither can live while the other survives." The life of Harry Potter has come full circle. Severus Snape's big mistake that he regretted for the rest of his life. Fifth Year. The Defense Against the Dark Arts written O.W. L. has just been finished. Sirius is bored, so James, upon seeing Severus nearby, begins to humiliate him. (This'll be finished whenever I get the chance to find OoP). Arguments: Q: Why did Paul Atreides have so many followers? Argument: The Fremen believed that the Madhi, the Lisan al-Gaib, the Voice from the outer world, would come to free them from the Harkonnens, and that he would be from a Bene Gesserit witch. So, it was partially their own beliefs and the Missionaria Protectiva. The Bene Gesserit, through their breeding program, made him the Kwisatz Haderach, he was just there. He, in the beginning, was an innocent, swept up by the dealings of others. He at first had no say in the matter, but later on he was given his own freedom,and, eventually, followers. Argument: That may be so, yet it was said in Dune that Paul was shaping himself to fit the Fremen beliefs, to become the Madhi. Therefore, it was Paul who made it so that he would have so many fanatic followers. He made himself the Kwisatz Haderach, by taking the Water of Life. All was by his hand. He gained the trust of the Fremen. He surrounded himself with myth. He shaped the world to what he wanted, to meet his end goal. To complete the Terrible Purpose. He thought for himself, he acted for himself, he saw the truths, he saw the future, he did what he had to do, said what he had to say to finish what he had to. Facts about Harry Potter: 1. A sickle is a tool used in harvesting grain. 2. A galleon is a large ship once used by Spaniards. 3. A knut, as most people pronounce "nut" or "k-nut" is actually the name of a Danish king, pronounced "ka-noot". 4. Hogwarts' motto, Never tickle a sleeping dragon* is testament to the school's fighting style. Voldemort failed to understand that the students and faculty would do everything in their power to protect it. 5. Voldemort is Spanish for "Flee from Death". 6. Severus, translated from the Latin, means severe, a quality that Snape does seem to have. 7. *The Latin is Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus. 8. Snape hated Neville because he could have been the Chosen One, and if he was, Lily would not have died. 9. Harry became an Auror at the age of 17. 10. Out of the Golden Trio, only Hermione completed her seventh year. OBITUARY FOR THE LATE MR. COMMON SENSE Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense,who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and Maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6 year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get Parental consent to administer Calpol, sun lotion, or a band-aid to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing. People say I'm shy. But I'm not shy all of the time. Sometimes it is good just to stand back, stay quiet, and just listen. You learn a lot that way. You learn how people interact with each other, you learn things you would not have otherwise known.
