Before we go too far, I want to show you the various twists and turns I took in becoming a writer for this site. I have actually been looking at this site since 2013. (First Viewed Story: How to Fly by The Last Poison Apple. I remember it vividly!) My parents were never ones for online liberty and especially fanfiction, so until this profile was created my fanfiction was confined to my computer with journal-like secrecy. From 2013 to the present, here are the names I have dreamed of claiming for my own. Turbo_LivesOn2013: I watched Wreck-it Ralph upwards of 10 times before I started high school and I REALLY wanted to see Turbo in Wreck-it Ralph 2. Yoshizilla-2: It was a phase, okay? I was 14! No one who has spent lots of time on FF can say they don’t know Rhedosaurus. IntelliWriter: I’ve pushed myself especially hard in school ever since High School, especially English and Writing. Many fanfiction authors think it perfectly acceptable to leave stories unfinished, to write them free of grammar, and to misspell words. Not me and not ever, regardless of my current name! TheLonePenman: I originally chose this name due to the fact that I have not spoken in person to many fanfiction writers. In fact, the folder on my computer holding the master files of every fanfiction on my page still bears this name. However, the online name is promised to another. Even though they are not fanfiction authors, it felt wrong to assume this name. And that leaves us with who I am today, WriterPatriot. I’m now an 18-25 year-old American college boy. One would think being in college, hailing from Washington State (It’s on the Left Coast!) and writing fanfiction would make me liberal. Well… not quite, but I’ll spare you all to what extent. Please don’t try to overanalyze my work for hidden political/religious references. I’m here to tell stories, not to teach my ideology. Fanfic Preferences: If you’ve written for RWBY, Legend of Zelda, Wreck-it Ralph, Peanuts (the Schulz comic), Hetalia, How to Train Your Dragon (Movies/TV universe) or Doctor Who (mainly Ninth and Tenth), I may have read your story! Within these fandoms, my favorite genres are Hurt/Comfort and Angst. Family and Friendship are also great genres, as they have a feeling of warmth that is lost with the addition of sexual tones and scenes. I also like Romance if the pairing is canon and/or quite possible, and if it doesn’t drag on for too long with background material in the crucial mind-grabbing first chapter. If you think you’re going to see me post lemons, you’ve got the wrong guy! Favorite Legend of Zelda Ships: · Link/Zelda (Skyward Sword) · Fledge/Orielle (Skyward Sword) · Link/Orielle (Skyward Sword) · Link/Medli (Wind Waker) My Opinions/Credos on Fanfiction: I love fanfictions that deal with lesser characters, especially in Zelda games. Whether it’s because I see an element of myself within them or just because their limited interactions in-game are pleasant, I enjoy reading and writing works about them. Every character deserves their chance to shine. I need to see emotion. Fanfictions don’t need to make me cry, or even make the characters cry, but lack of emotional investment in a story kills my interest in it. If anyone out there wants to hide some information from me online, they now know where to sneak it in. In Zelda works with original plotlines, the plot doesn’t have to be groundbreaking or “a new take on the series.” I enjoy Legend of Zelda as it is, despite the accusations of patriarchy. There are many other stories out there that benefit immensely from physically strong female lead characters (including my original fiction itself) but Zelda games aren’t among them unless I play as Zelda or if Zelda plays a helping role. When people ask for an incarnation of Zelda who can save herself, they’re asking for one short game. And Link would be just as helpless if he were seized by a Demon King without the opportunity to arm himself. A high-school friend and aspiring author once told me, “Fanfiction writers are the lowest of the low.” At that point, I hadn’t written much fanfiction. (Aside from a few Wreck-it Ralph and Kung Fu Panda one shots; if enough of you PM me I might rework and put them out!) Obviously, I don’t think her accusation is true. Fanfiction is a sandbox where original fiction is a rigid obstacle course. As an extremely meticulous world-builder, I understand that quality original fiction takes a lot of work. Fanfiction allows writers to learn the basics of storytelling and character portrayal without having to create characters and worlds that may not turn out as intended. (And trust me, it's EXTREMELY possible for something to turn out that way even if you're the only person who knows it exists) It’s also a great way to unwind, no matter how experienced the writer is. And hey, if you change all the names and just a few other details of your fanfic, you could have the next traditional-media phenomenon! As an American citizen, when writing for Hetalia and listing countries, I will lead with the foreign state out of courtesy. (Example: Canada, England and America). I will also add disclaimers stating that the opinions of the nations’ personages do not necessarily represent the opinions of all, or even a majority, of the nation’s citizens. Different, uncensored views are much more interesting! If I write a work based on events in non-recent history, I will research thoroughly. And yes, I know that Canada exists. I’ve been North of that border several times, and it’s absolutely gorgeous! I don’t mean to be torturous and/or fetishist of my favorite characters when I place them in rough situations. I merely think feeling empathy and offering comfort during a hard time is sheer beauty. I just don't see why some people are out to get fanfiction. Sure, it can be argued that it is copyright infringement, but the people who write fanfiction aren't in it to steal. They're around because their appetites for a certain fictional universe are bigger than what the universe officially includes. I don't think any of us would stay home from the sequel to a movie or miss the second episode of a show we loved because there is fanfiction. If we do, the franchise must have seriously jumped the shark. Beyond This Site: Not much. College is rightfully the main focus of my life right now. I watch YouTube and play a few mobile, tabletop, Windows PC and Nintendo Switch games in my downtime. I also love hanging out with friends in real life (even if they’re not writers/role-players/computer geeks like me!). Thanks so much for visiting! Enjoy the rest of my page and our great site, and wherever you are, have a great day! |
