Author has written 1 story for Harry Potter. Hi! I am a writer that began their ‘career’ only at the start of 2016. I had several ideas and had consumed many hundred thousand words of fan fiction at that point. What I saw in my mind was something I had a) not found realized or b) had partially been realized in a story with a quality ranging from cringe-worthy to abysmal. Thus I started the mental journey of writing what I would like to read myself. Some of the most riveting, amusing and - most important - enlightening hundreds of thousands of words of fan fiction (or in fact any piece of literature I have come across) is Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (see also in Favourites). This story literally changed who I am as a person. Since getting into contact with several of the concepts portrayed and discussed in it, I have sought so change my ways of thinking, reasoning and behaving. I believe I am better now than before and I do not know how to do my gratitude justice in written word. Suffice to say that the author, Less Wrong, would probably be always at least a handful of levels above me. I believe that no character can be more intelligent than the author (they can know everything the author knows, but not reason better about that knowledge than the author could!), and since his Harry is beyond me, that would also apply to the author. ‡ English is a second language for me but boy do I like it. I place special emphasis on speaking and thus writing British English. I must clarify that Britain itself does not hold any particular charm for me on the whole (let us conveniently skip any political discussion at this point). I just enjoy some stereotypical British ways of speaking and behaving. For example, I love battered cod with chips (not to be confused with crisps ;]) and crushed minted peas. I love underhanded and black humor (although I am not as good at it than I wish). I love the sound of what one might call ‘BBC Presenter English’. To me, British English sounds proper where American English often sounds like someone not caring to expend the effort. In many ways, that is not right and I am a bigot there myself as I could enjoy listening to Scottish speakers all day. Also, I will use SI units whenever I can as in my opinion, they (and obvious derivates) are the the most sensible ones we have. The universe of Harry Potter holds a special place in my heart, as not only is there such a vast amount of fiction to read, it also was something I am happy to have grown up with. My ideas were almost always rooted firmly in that realm and I enjoy the spot between magic (in different interpretations), technology (canon 1990s or futuristic), possible hybrids of those or the clash between the ways of thinking (magical vs. scientific, read: medieval vs. rational). I do have some snippets of stories written but will begin posting them at some point (don't know better myself right now, sorry). As I have no lector, what you will read is all mine. Any and all ideas of me profiting from my stories are ludicrous and should be disregarded on conception. ‡ Annotation in response to having been labelled a fanboy: I am aware of severe criticism towards Eliezer Yudkowsky on a personal and factual level. Nevertheless, I managed to take away a lot from the work of this author and I do believe that - judging by what I have read on the web - he might be able to run intellectual circles around me. Be that as it may, my recommendation stands. Not everyone can choose who and what they are but (especially considering something unobtrusive like text on a web page) everyone can (must!) choose how (or if at all) to process information. Grain of salt. This should be decoupled from any inclination towards shooting the messenger, polishing their shoes or to ignore them. |
