Poll: (November Poll) Who's your Fate/Stay Night bae? Vote Now! |
![]() Gender: Male Age: 25ish Likes: Alternate PoV: I love knowing how other people react to the MC and what they think of them and their decisions. Review answers/ANs: ANs are a good way for the reader to feel close to the author, to let them know what they think of certain issues or communicate notes about events that happened in the fic that cannot be explained within it, like why something changed or what the reader's opinion is on a certain plot twist. Dislikes: Poor grammar: You could've written a masterpiece as far as plot is concerned but if I have to stop every five seconds to decipher what the hell your hieroglyphics mean then I'm sorry but I won't be reading your work. Seriously, find yourself a beta. If not there are programs, apps and sites that check over your grammar if you aren't good at it yourself. Use them. Harem fics: I read very few stories that manage to write an engaging tale with multiple love interests. More often than not they come off as extremely forced. If a story is entirely based around a harem it would be hollow, with a marked lack of resolution. All those relationships generally end at sex and beyond the initial night of passion the relationship immediately stagnates, until the introduction of the next "love" interest. Relationships become incidental, almost two-dimensional, and harems are practically given to the protagonist "because". The worst offenders are authors that actually ask their readers who they want to be in the harem... which is just ridiculous. It literally shows they have put no thought whatsoever into it and whatever characters end up being used are as interchangeable as they are irrelevant. When done right a harem can actually be incredibly entertaining to read if the protagonist actually puts some thought into the relationships, grows up and finally chooses one. If handled right the consequences of that choice can be much more interesting than the initial conflict between those vying for the character's affection, and there must be conflict. God-like fics: The majority of these are cool for about two chapters, when the MC kicks everyone's ass with impunity, then you realise that their existence breaks the entire plot and nothing is interesting anymore because whatever happens, the MC can handle it no problem. The few successful fics in this genre are about a MC who takes a backseat as an observer and lets everyone else do the work because the moment they enter the fray the fight is over, killing all tension. Bashing fics: This includes, but is not limited to, making characters look bad because they are a threat to your ship or favourite character; because you think it makes your favourite character look good in comparison; making them act severely out of character, like plotting murder, committing rape or beating the hell out of people, for no good reason when there is no indication in canon that they would behave in such a way. Generally speaking, bashing characters is always an indicator of a low quality fic, and that the author can't bring themselves to write a character they dislike they way they are supposed to. Fatalist fics: Where no matter how many things change, absolutely nothing influences the plot, which remains the same. These fics are heavily tied to godlike fics, such as giving Naruto the Rinnegan and having him go through the plot like nothing changed, and Self Insert fics, where the MC changes many things along the way without them amounting to anything anyway. OOC characters: Can be done well, can be done badly. If the character is shown changing out of their canonical attitude and into the one you wish them to have because of certain events then it isn't actually out of character but character development, which is good. If the fic starts off and a character is completely different from their canonical counterpart with zero explanation as to how this came about, it's bad. This makes me immediately ask questions instead of simply enjoying the story, and when those questions are not sated by a reasonable answer it immediately drags down any good points the fic might have made. Irrational/Insane characters: My ability to like a fanfiction is closely tied to how much I can empathize with the characters and see their thoughts reflecting mine, or at least being able to understand their reasoning behind a given decision. It goes without saying that the chances of this happening with an insane character who does not operate according to reason and logic is abysmal and more often than not I drop said fic after one or two chapters. Incorrect use of Tags: This includes, but is not limited to, tagging a character that has yet to show up in the story; tagging characters as romantically involved even if no romance has yet been observed; tagging a single character with multiple tags, like tagging a character as Naruto and Naruko at the same time even though there's only one of them. The first two cases are basically spoilers, telling the readers that these characters will definitely show up and these two will get together. The last one, in particular the example, is telling me that there are two siblings/twins/halves when there's in fact a single Naruto who happens to be female. Ruined immersion: Especially in SI fics, the reader must feel immersed in the story and be able to put themselves in the MC's shoes, seeing themselves in them, and one of the author's greatest mistakes is breaking immersion by acting as if they were playing a videogame through a screen or outright breaking the 4th wall. This is only excusable in comedy fics.
