Being blind is no barrier to creativity. Like most things in this world, life is what you make of it, and after losing my sight due to an eye operation that went terribly wrong, I became a writer, and have now produced a wide variety of books and short stories, primarily of the ghost/supernatural/things that go bump in the night genre. The Ghosts of Camals College (Second Edition) Specs: childrens fantasy/adventure, 12 Synopsis: Smelly pirates and charging rhinoceros - Grace Darling is very good at inventing games, but when supernatural forces hold her prisoner, she soon learns that some games can be very dangerous…even deadly. Why was she transported to such a strange and spooky place, and what is the connection to her father? Professor Lution, the Chancellor of Camals, (The College of Customs and Myths and Legends), has a problem. Although there have been Darlings at Camals for generations, there is considerable opposition to the latest candidate, Grace. As a compromise, Professor Lution proposes conducting a suitability test, which on the surface is relatively simple – follow the clues to find a book. Being ignorant of these facts, Grace is introduced to the world of the supernatural, and finds herself in Beatrigone, which is in effect, a giant film set. However, when the test is hijacked by the evil Viletrix and his hideous spectral army, Camals loses complete control. With the assistance of Wendy Wallace – who just 'happened' to be there, Pan, Arjunar – a historical archer, Gwiffyn - a mysterious wise woman, and four extremely angry Incan ghosts, amongst many others, Grace wins the battle for Beatrigone, but it is not over yet. Upon returning home, she must decide whether to attend Camals, or have all knowledge of Beatrigone and its strange and spooky inhabitants, and indeed the college itself, wiped from her memory. Why did the wall ‘bulge’, or the apple seeds cry, and why can’t Gilly remember attending the ball? Is that really a wolf outside the door? In the footsteps of Edgar Alan Poe, Montague James, and Joseph Le Fanu, comes these 12 ghost stories set in the Victorian era. ‘The Price of Interference’, and, ‘The Abdatory’, are just two of the stories in this enthralling new collection. Fan Fiction – Harry Potter All right, I admit it, I only wrote these chapters for a dare. Surprisingly though, they have proved quite popular. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8648124/1/Harry-Potter-the-Flume-of-the-Agathos-Daimon So, how is it done? How does a blind person write books? On the practical side, I use a text-to-speech program called ‘Jaws’, which enables me to use and navigate around a computer, including the Internet, with considerable ease. Information on Jaws can be found at www.freedomscientific.com On the creative side, well that’s a little more difficult to explain. Try this experiment. Put on your favourite movie and watch it blindfolded. As you already ‘know’ the movie – who does what where & when etc, your mind compensates for the lack of visualisation by filling in the ‘blanks’. Now try it with something you’ve never seen before, even the six o'clock news. Not so easy to fill in the blanks now is it? By this point, you’re probably going bonkers with frustration – hee hee, welcome to my world! Do not remove the blindfold. Instead, allow your imagination to compensate for the lack of visualization, and this will give you an idea of how I create my stories. Oh if only Steven Spielberg could read my mind. |
