Holly has been in San Francisco for three years but the job she left Gail and Toronto for hasn't turned out quite how she hoped. Tempted by an attractive job offer from a private firm, Holly is warned off by someone from her past, leaving her with what seems like a million questions about what exactly happened to Gail Peck after she left her in Toronto.

Gail Peck meets Dr Holly Stewart, Ottawa's top forensic pathologist on a plane on the way to a crime conference in NYC. In a rather un-Gail-Peck-like manner, Gail makes fast friends with Holly, whose easy going attitude doesn't for once put the blonde off. When Gail feels herself letting down her guard, things start to get a bit complicated.

Gail would have been happy to just hide away in the closet by herself, but a sudden intrusion changes everything. Before tonight she had always hated her mother's dinner parties and now she found herself mentally thanking Elaine for it. Or Gail and Holly meet in a slightly different world.

The last three years had been beyond hard. The hits kept coming and Gail kept falling. Failed daughter, failed Peck. Maybe the answers, all of them, were at the end of her fall. Maybe she could find her place in the ruins of what was left of her life.

It's been around two years since Holly moved to San Francisco, and just as long since she talked to Gail, so seeing her in the parking lot at work is, in a word, unexpected.

Gail is a lonely teenager in a new town and a new school who is sure she doesn't know the first thing about friendship. Holly is a disgustingly cheerful girl who doesn't mind teaching Gail a thing or two. There's laughter, bloody knuckles, and a kiss or two, sign language, and teenagers trying to grow up right.

The problem with feelings was having them. Or not. It was really not. Because she hadn't had them in so long, maybe she'd actually forgotten what they were. But instead, she just didn't feel anything.

Gail Peck is not "just" a Peck, but getting to reinvent yourself beyond your family when you've been born into the Peck Dynasty is not a simple nor easy journey. Gail probably wouldn't have bothered to change, but then there was Holly. It's messy, it's complicated, but sometimes you come out the end a better person, snark intact.

When you're at a bar and you tell people you have a girlfriend in Canada, it feels like a trope. And a little bit of a lie. And you hate everything except your job and you miss her, but she's not really your girlfriend, is she? (Was a One-Shot, then it got a sequel.)

So here's another one-shot. What would happen if Gail went to San Francisco to get Holly back? These are my musings. Romance, angst, emotion... all the usual things you would expect from me :)

All Gail feels is the bullet as it pierces the skin above her vest, right in the hollow of her neck.

You have a way about you that screams for affection, yet you hide behind a small wall to keep from getting hurt. You're afraid to let people in. So as the years go by and relationships deteriorate, your small stone wall slowly builds higher and higher until it creates a castle, and only those who can truly understand you will be given access by the drawbridge.

Set sometime in Season 6, Holly comes back and seeks out Gail and well, a conversation ensues and emotions are involved. In my opinion these two belong together and I'd like something like this to happen. Romance/fluff/bit of angst *sigh* Golly forever. One-shot.
